    Steamed Fish

It's about time to put a review about my experience, rather than my experience helping the older people who own the house where I live. I've been going to Hong Kong Restaurant for several weeks now. I order the same thing each time: Steamed Fish, Steamed Rice, and Iced Tea. I love fish, as almost all Japanese do. I always get a good portion here and the recipe is made well. Every time I enter, I'm greeted energetically, whether they're busy or not. The dear lady running things knows what I want after all these weeks. I'm not one for American-ized Chinese food, having worked in a Chinese restaurant of my friends in Ohio. There isn't as much room as one could hope. I feel bad taking a booth if it's busy but I don't like the chairs or leaving my stuff in the way. Since I walk, I have stuff with me. The Steamed Fish is the best I've had for a while and it's less expensive than the other place in town where I used to go. I wish that they had a couple of other recipes from around China, but this is good, solid food. I haven't bought it for a while, but their Tofu Seafood Soup is really good. I just can't eat that and the fish. I'm just so glad that it's close and they are friendly, as well as having good food.

I drove 2 hours to get this today and as always it is so good. This is the best chinese you can get here and worth it every time. Huge portions very fair prices!

2 1/2 stars Tried this place for dinner on 6/13/24. We decided to orders some orange chicken, beef fried rice, steam rice and sweet & sour pork. Food here seems to be ok. We both thought the orange and the sweet & sour pork was cooked to long because it was really crispy. I found that the orange chicken tasted way better than the sweet and sour pork. My mistake when I ordered my dish was to have both the rice and sweet & sour pork together on the plate. I don't like when the rice is drenched with sauce. I couldn't really taste it because the pork was crispy and fried. Most of the sauce was with the rice. Overall food was ok and service was good and friendly.

Fried rice, batter, garlic chicken pieces.

This place used to be great. The food was too salty, my husband ate a little then pushed the plate away. The food had an aftertaste really bad. The worst Chinese food I had. We had it to go so didn't know until we got home. I gave the food to my dogs except the shrimp. Shrimp was full of batter and a tiny shrimp.

I was Rolling Thru Town and I wanted Chinese Food for Dinner Today!!! So I went to Hong Kong Restaurant!!! I've been wanting to try them for a while!!!! I parked my Whip right in front and rolled In and grabbed a Table like a Boss!!!! They have their own Parking Lot FYI!!! Their Server is a Breath Of Fresh Air!!! She was very Nice, Friendly and Inviting!!! I ordered off their Special Board - A Large Asparagus Beef Plate in Black Bean Sauce!!! I also ordered a Large Bowl of Steamed Rice and a Large Fried Prawns plate!!! My Server brought me a Glass of Ice Water and kept it full for me!!! 15 minutes later my Server brought my Food Piping Hot From the Kitchen!!!! I enjoyed the Food as it was Fresh and Delicious!!! It was Packed full of Flavors!!! The only thing I really didn't like was the Breading on the Shrimp!!! It was a little Thick and Excessive!!! I like the Decor and the Vibe of the Restaurant!!! It's also a Family Owned Restaurant!!! This Is A Baller On A Budget Approved Establishment!!!

I feel terrible leaving bad reviews for small business owners but this meal was one of my worst probably ever. So I would like to do the business a favor with feedback to hire a new chef. We ordered Szechuan chicken, chicken, fried rice, chicken, chow mein, and sesame beef. From the moment I opened my carry out containers I already knew it was going to be awful, the looks weren't even appealing. I proceeded with my first bite of the Szechuan chicken that was just crunchy, dry, chewy chicken- I couldn't stop chewing the chicken because it never broke down- I was debating on swallowing or spitting it out. Everything to follow was flavorless, not cooked to taste, very little sauce. I def will not be returning here.

First & last order. The fried rice & chow mein was good! But the fried chicken and shrimp were absolutely disgusting. All we could taste was the oil, the chicken tasted weird (old) we tossed it along with the shrimps. The egg drop soup was not egg drop it was a broth with like a jelly consistency & some floating pieces of egg whites also tossed.

I came yesterday in the afternoon to buy the orange chicken and fried rice, as soon as I took a few bites I knew something wasn't right, the greasy processed food gave me heartburn throughout my day at work and I felt terrible, had to go to Walmart afterwards to buy something to alleviate the pain in my chest, I'm only 23 years old and the pain in my chest was excruciating, 0/10 rating easily.

Food was so much better this time around than the last time I had been there. They really must've had a bad night when I had gone previously. Small restaurant in the of a little strip mall off of Main Street. They serve classic Chinese American food and unlike most places in the Bay Area that are family style dishes preferably on a Lazy Susan during dinner time. They offer rice plates, or combo plates for individuals, similar to lunch specials. I selected several dishes and asked the server which was the most popular amongst the dishes I chose, and she let me know the salt and pepper fish, which I got with chow mein. We also ordered shrimp & broccoli, and sweet-and-sour pork. Everything appeared made to order and looked very fresh. From grandma to the babes everyone was happy with their food. Mine was more on the plain Jane with just fried fish, luckily it came with sliced jalapeños to give it a kick. Next time I'll order a spicy eggplant dish. This is a good place to go to if you're with a group of picky eaters. Price is very reasonable, especially for dinner.

7/5 /25 Update 3/5 This has been a long time coming…read moreunfortunately. Ever since the previous owners sold the place the quality has dropped significantly. Consistency has been a major issue not only with food but with policy. When they first took over I'm sure there were some learning curves and maybe tweaks to the recipes. I wanted to give them a fair shot to get things right. Not sure if the old cooks stayed or if they got new ones? Did the new owners have the recipes changed? Did they change suppliers of ingredients, etc, I just don't know. What I can tell you though is that at least some of the dishes are different and are off from what I remember. The general Tao sauce I thought tasted different but necessarily bad. But combine that with a definite lack of crisp/crunch with the fried items and that's gonna be a problem for me. This time around, I only got the general tao beef because unlike my previous visit, they did not allow me to order the general tao beef in the combo plate as in upcharge (just last week or the week before it was allowed). I've been multiple times since the change in ownership. Partly because of the convenience of the location and partly because of the hope that whatever meal I eat at any given time will at least satisfy my fix for their type of Chinese American food. Unfortunately, the fried items I loved so much like orange chicken, sweet and sour pork and general tao beef alike are all severely lacking the crunch from the fry. As of late I've been getting the General Tao Beef to track consistency and it's been consistently under cooked in terms of the batter. The beef itself has been rubbery and to the point where I can't even break apart a piece and end up having to eat it whole lots of times. The other problem is that the pieces are large inconsistently cut (sometimes with, sometimes against the grain) strips making for a difficult chew. And because of the lack of crunch the fried battered outside just falls apart when you bite or try to cut it apart. The last two visits, but especially this one considering I ordered extra crunchy, were severely undercooked and soggy. it was to the point this time where I basically had to scrape off the majority of the batter and just eat the rubbery beef inside. It really does bring me pain to drastically drop the rating of a place that I once loved. I hope one day they can make the fixes so that I can continue to enjoy their food once again. I gave them a 3/5 but honestly, it probably should have been 2/5. I think the chicken with hot garlic sauce might be just good enough to keep it at 3/5 even though the last three times I ordered it. It was inconsistently hot (with cold spots) temperature wise.

For me this place is a 3/5. I ordered the general chicken and orange chicken. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I came maybe about 10 min later. Got the food and tasted it soon after I got to my car. Orange chicken lacking in that orange pop. General chicken lacking in overall flavor. What was the most unforgivable though was the soggy chicken. Eating at its optimal level would be eating it fresh at the table at the restaurant. Next best thing would be in the car as soon as you got it. But it's a to-go restaurant to realistically your eating it at home after it's traveled for however many minutes. As expected when I got home it was soggy. But it was already as soggy as possible to begin with. Why is this place a 4/5 I have no idea. Maybe since I came during off peak hours so they foods just sitting around and there's no fresh food turnover? No idea. Maybe I'll give them another chance one day but who knows. Also factor in that they don't have rice plates and the cost of pure entrees alone and that's a negative for me. I didn't know how lacking Chinese food was in Manteca because I was spoiled by the old Kitty's Kitchen. Nothing compares in the area.

I'll comment on the taste in a bit but I want to first highlight something I've never experienced. In all my work-from-home years I've never once had to-go experience where the dishes looked like they'd been plated for table service at the restaurant. Sure some stuff shifted in the Dasher's car but it honestly blew me away. Even the drink was carefully wrapped and put in a little box to ensure it wouldn't leak everywhere. As for the important bit, the taste, man... I have had so many amazing Thai meals at places in the bay area and honestly just assumed the most Modesto would get is some great Banh Mi spots. Obviously I haven't had the chance to try the whole menu but my go-to, Tom Kha, this is the best Thai coconut soup I've ever had! The Pad Thai is as good if not better than what I've had in San Francisco as well. I'm really looking forward to bringing friends and family here to check it out in person! Side note... yes, it's also very expensive ordering via Doordash with their added fees but it's 2026 and it's California. So far my multiple orders have been well worth the price and I expect the same experience in person! (just, you know, without the extra Doordash fee nonsense)
