Mi Amigo Panaderia is the best place in Fallbrook to get fresh authentic Mexican and especially, pan dulce. It is always fresh and soft, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There are 4 places that I know of to get pan dulce in Fallbrook. Major Market, El Toro market, Northgate Market and Mi Amigo Panaderia. Mi Amigo Panaderia has dominated and officially buried all of their competition. This is why... Major Market and El Toro import their supply from bakeries that are located elsewhere. That's against the rules for fresh pan dulce. In my mind, pan dulce should only travel from the panaderia to the place you will be eating it. Besides, who knows how often Major Market and El Toro Market rotate their stock? That leaves Northgate Market. They are pretty good in a pinch, but they are too busy trying to run a grocery store. They have too much on their plates to be trusted with making good pan dulce. After trying Northgate pan dulce many times, I have found it quick to get all dry and hard if you don't eat it right away. El Amigo is reliable. Their pan dulce is always fresh and stays soft. They sell out of pan dulce every day and make new racks of fresh pan dulce every morning. My favorites are the puerquito, ojo de buey and the chocolate conchas. The staff at El Amigo are quietly focused on making good pan dulce, period. I have always been welcomed and they always provide service with a smile. Their store is not flashy and has not been updated in forever. They have a little chime that rings when customers come in and out. This chime sounds like it has been smashed with a hammer and makes me laugh every time it goes off. Awesome! read more

From the kitchen: Two tacos dorados/crunchy de adobada Two chicken enchiladas From the oven/bakery: Two empanadas de fresa/strawberry Two conchas (a chocolate and a vanilla) Two ojos de buey pan dulce/a strawberry coconut pastry Juices/Smoothies/Aguas frescas: A mangonada A strawberry agua fresca The kitchen... The tacos come with everything but the kitchen sink; queso fresco, crema agria/sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce, and some good hot sauce on the side. The chicken enchiladas were amazing. The food is really good and very consistent. The kitchen is definitely quality over quantity but I had more to eat. The bakery... The empanadas are always good, I really like the apple but they were all strawberry, not a bad thing. The ojos de buey look like hostess snowballs but taste nothing alike. They are more like a fine ground corn muffin glazed in strawberry and dusted with coconut shavings. The conchas are for breakfast! Juices/Smoothings/Aguas frescas... The mangonada was better than I expected because of the mango ice cream. Well, it's more like a sorbet. The chamoy candy syrup was really sour but the mango sorbet and pieces were fantastic. It all comes with a chamoy candy stick to satisfy that sweet, salty, sour craving. The strawberry agua fresca was really refreshing. They also had horchata, cantaloupe, and chayote/squash/gourd/melon/cucumber like thing. I was on a strawberry kick though! The bakery opens pretty early like 5am and the kitchen opens at 8am. So just when I thought this place couldn't get any better they bring out the mango and chamoy!!!!! The bakery has now expanded into an ice cream store and I couldn't be any happier!! They sell regular ice cream including Mexican flavors and also mango drinks like raspados. Their bread continues to be just as delicious and so is the food. Did I mention their chicken enchiladas? Usually have a good experience with their sweet bread. I have a visiting guest with me and I took him to the panaderia. We ordered 2 cookies and sat down in the restaurant to enjoy them. This is probably my favorite bakery around the area. The owner and staff are so personable and their food and baked goods are delicious! They are also very inexpensive and their bread is fresh! Today fam and I went there for lunch. We ordered a chicken torta, chicken tostada, beef fried taco, a plain quesadilla, and a horchata. The torta was really good. And the tostada and taco would have been better if it wasnt over fried(too brown). The quesadilla was good but then again it was just a plain quesadilla(nearly impossible to mess up) the large horchata looked more like a medium and it tasted like it came from powder. Not a fan. I've had their ice cream and tostilocos. Theyre good. I would come back for the treats and a torta. Oh and the salsas were not anything too great. read more

Stopped by to try out their Ice cream shop on a hot day. Girls taking orders didn't seem to know what was on the menu or prices. The fresas with crema we ordered strawberries were old. Fell into this place when walking downtown Fallbrook. Already full from lunch, we (wife, me and man-pups) were looking for something sweet. At the end of the downtown strip we were walking to attempt to work off our lunch and take in the local vibe, we came across this place. I LOVE coming across a place like this. We will be back to try their savory stuff soon. Menu looks interesting, and we saw a lot of locals eating. This review is based on 2 things...the ice cream / bakery....and the prices. I have no problem paying for good stuff, but this place put me back on my heels for dessert. When is the last time you have gotten change back from a 10 spot when you satisfy a family of four? I can't remember...wait..I can....this place. But, the price is not just the appeal. We REALLY all enjoyed our stuff...shortbread cookie-like thing (sorry, forgot the name), guava ice cream (fantastic), avocado ice cream (heck, we're in Fallbrook), etc. Want to rush back and try their Mexican food. If their savory menu is half as good, then I'll be happy. Wasn't in the place to buy stuff from the Panaderia to go (out and about on a hot day with no cooler), but they looked very good. Will try next time. Really fun experience to drop into an unknown place and have a great experience.
