It was plenty of food. Had to dock off a star for the confusion around the pricing. The lunch menu had prices for every different combo of vegetarian and non-vegetarian protein which we didn't realize, so be sure to ask if you're not sure. While they seemed to like the food a lot, I had a more mixed experience. - Samosa Chaat: This was tasty but small. - Vegetarian Sampler Platter: Not sure if something was lost in translation, but we received two plates of these, though the plates didn't have some of the same items. Best of the bunch was the samosa and bhajia. Though is saddens me that. Veg Platter features only fried items--surely more could've been done? - Korma: Not as creamy as I would've liked. - Til Wale Aloo Gobhi: Not spicy enough, well...at all. I'm used to my Aloo Gobi packed with mustard seeds and other bursts of flavor that make my tongue tipsy. Amiya kinda played it safe here. - Garlic Naan: Fine but not garlicky enough. - Mango Kulfi: Generous portion but already fairly melted when served. - Ras Malai: The paneer was a bit hard in that not-yet-thawed kind of way, and the cream needed wayyyy more cardamom. But I'm a cardamom fiend, so there's never enough cardamom for me. Can't say much for service as boss' wife did most of the ordering in Hindi. I'll give them props for making an attempt at nice decor, though the dark and dank look with weirdly colored string lights isn't really my style. After our previous, stellar meal at Amiya, we were eager to return and did so the other night. Since it was a Saturday evening, the restaurant was rather crowded, and the service was on the slower side, but still very friendly. Instead of sharing an appetizer, we split an order of the vegetarian Bombay Aloo, which had been a favorite on our last visit. Again, the tender potatoes were served in a powerfully flavorful sauce that we adored. In addition, we each got our own main courses. While I had loved the tandoori Murgh Ke Seekh previously, I wanted something that used chunks of chicken rather than the ground version, so I went with the Chicken Ka Tikka. Unfortunately, that had been a bad decision, since the poultry was mostly dark meat and was pretty chewy and slimy. I doubt that I would order it again. I heard positive things about the Lamb Vindaloo, though. When it came to the bread, I opted for the Coconut and Raisin Naan, which was sweet, delicious, and a great complement to the fiery food. The bite I tried of the Onion Kulcha was also impressive. The basmati rice was just as seasoned and tasty as it had been last time. I come here when a friend visits me, they are a close by option from work and great option for early dinner. The service is super friendly and attentive. The food options are large and tasty. I always go for the garlic naan and cheese naan. They both are freshly made and super tasty, great by themselves but even better with any of their dishes containing sauces or gravy. My favorite appetizers besides the naan is the coconut shrimp. It is saucy and cooked to the right temperature. My main is always the Amita Tandoori Plater, great mixture of meats and seafood. Everything is prepared fresh and cooked to the correct temperature. Their chicken tikka masala is very saucy and tasty. Great dish especially of you have naan left, you can of course order more. We always leave with a doggie bag as it is a good amount of food. We never make it to the sweets but will try on our next visit so I can update you all. It is worth the visit if you are in the JC area and want good Indian cuisine. read more

Decent Indian food with nice decor and outstanding service. We visited Amiya two times in April 2024 with colleagues for a team lunch. The place looks great, with a simple but nice aesthetic decor and ambient lighting. It felt really pleasant to be in. First time we opted for a lunch special. It included a small appetizer bar: Dosa (Indian crepe) with potato filling was very good and smooth. Lentil/vegetable soup was good, mildly spicy, and warm. It had however celery or lemongrass or some other stalks in it that were not chewable and had to be spitted out. I'm sure the soup would be great without this. Potato/lentil doughnut was deep-fried, unremarkable, quite tasteless. The main course was a platter with a choice of two dishes. I got Lamb platter with Chicken Xacuti. It was served with fresh warm naan bread and some cooked coconut flakes as a side. Naan was perfect. Coconut was interesting and nicely accompanied the main dish. The lamb was something like lamb korma, tasty and flavorful, though very mild. Some pieces were very tender, melting in the mouth, but some were hardly chewable. Chicken Xacuti unfortunately was a complete disappointment. Pieces of boiled tasteless chicken breast just mixed into some sauce and immediately served. It certainly didn't taste like a properly cooked dish with all the flavors combined and blended. Looks like they tried to cut corners on this one. The second time we ordered from the main menu and it was a big difference in food quality. Appetizers Vegetarian Sampler Platter - it was good as it's supposed to be. All items were deep-fried which I'm not a fan of but it's my personal taste. The dish was good. Coriander Soup with Mushrooms and Chicken - the soup itself was excellent, warming up, with the right spice level. The mushrooms didn't belong there at all though. They were tasteless and slimy and soup would be much better without them. Alternatively, the mushroom could sauteed or roasted before adding to the soup. Mains Paneer Kadaai - excellent and delicious! It had very interesting flavor combo and was mildly spicy. Lamb Rogan Josh - also excellent, smooth, flavorful, and tasty. The lamb was fully cooked, soft and tender, melting in the mouth how it's supposed to be. I asked to make it as spicy as possible, but it came milder than Paneer Kadaai which was ordered as mild as possible :) Oh, well... It was good anyway. The service was excellent: polite, quick, very attentive. Empty plates, used napkins, and utensils were removed and replaced promptly. Overall, I would rate Amiya 4 at this point. It's ok for a medium grade Indian food in a nice atmosphere but not if you are looking for a full taste palette Indian cuisine has to offer. If you are looking for a much better food quality, I recommend ordering from the main menu rather than lunch special. read more

Disgraceful establishment. Stopped in for an advertised $10 margarita. Went to the back bar to swap my ticket for the drink and saw them scooping margarita juice from buckets on the floor into cups (gross to begin with). Noticed that the few people served before me were having tequila added to their mix once in the cup. When it was my turn the bartender just scooped in the mix and served us the margaritas. I questioned him pointing out he added no tequila - he told me "the tequila is already in the mix". When I questioned him again he said he didn't know what I was talking about and the tequila is already pre-mixed in. I leave and sip the margarita and it's clearly just juicy mix with no alcohol. I went back in, told the crook to fix it immediately and they then added in tequila to our drinks. I hate being scammed - beware. I would never go back here. I work in the area and recall when the restaurant was locate in Plaza 5. I was walking by today and said let me grab lunch as I have not been in the place for many years. The hostess was nice. However the lunch special was $21.00 and there was barley any food in the container. Oh sure there was a bunch of rice but not much lamb and a couple of pieces of Tandoori chicken. Two pieces of Tandoori chicken and one piece which was all bone. Not sure what that was probably should have sent it to a laboratory. Having just moved to downtown Jersey City, been checking out the nabe for new places. This evening I realized I'd not yet sampled an Indian restaurant Amiya. While it's a very attractive interior, the food just didn't make it. I tried 3 dishes, an interesting sounding special Dal made with different beans, a sag paneer, and a shrimp dish. I was doing take out, the service experience was very good, with the dishes ready on time. I was so hoping to love this attractive restaurant. The Chef's multi bean Dahl, looked great, could see the different bean types, but had little flavor (although the most pleasant out of all 3. The Sag Paneer (a go to for me) had almost as much cheese cubes (which I found too firm) as spinach, and the spinach looked great but was just blah. The last Shrimp dish, had some spice, didn't have much flavor, the shrimp were very firm and not easy to bite. Were they just removed from a freezer? Came here with my 5 person family for someones birthday. I made a reservation ahead of time for a Monday night but it doesn't seem like you would need it for sure, the place was kind of empty and the staff was happy to accommodate (as my original reservation was for 4). The ambiance is more upscale, the bar is very trendy and the music sets a really lovely tone. Service was kind! They were quick, came to check in on us often and were so nice. I liked that they answered questions honestly about what is good versus not -- and their suggestions were on par! Parking is always a little challenging in this area - Its all street parking other then some not-worth-it expensive garages. I'd leave like 10-15 minutes early to find a spot and walk over. Here's what we got: Drinks: A bottle of wine to share - we got a red wine. The server brought out the glasses and poured everyones wine. Appetizer: Vegetarian sampler - it was an assortment of pakoras, there were eggplant ones, methi tikki, potato tikki, samosas and mirchi pakoras. I liked them all. The potato one was a little too thick for my liking, but others at the table enjoyed it. Garlic spicy manchurian - SO SO good! Very spicy as the name entails - but not uncomfortably, its a great spice level if you regularly eat spicy food. Loved the indo-chinese flavors on this dish. **Overall, the appetizers were a very generous size! They were a little on the pricier end for an Indian restaurant, but well worth it. Dinner: Navaratan Korma: pretty good, very flavorful. Its a red gravy rather than a cashew based white gravy which I liked. The vegetable chunks were a little to large for my liking. The cauliflower and broccoli pieces were just a little toooo big. Malai kofta: I liked the gravy, it was a little lighter than the previous dish. The kofta itself was a little too dense for me. Overall really great, a lot of flavor and the perfect spice level. Amiya paneer: MY FAVORITE! I love paneer in general but they took it to the next level - great spice, great flavor and TONs of paneer! 10/10 totally recommend this dish. We got a chilli garlic naan that I enjoyed and took the spice level up one notch - which is something I was looking for. I also loveee spicy food so if you're like me then you should totally get this to pair with your meal. (It was a little cold in the middle at first, but when we mentioned it to the waiter he offered to heat it up or replace it right away which I thought was very generous). All of this was enough food for 5 people with a container of left overs- really good food. You had to order rice and raw onions separately. They also realized that there was a birthday in our group and bought out a cute little mango dessert with a gulab jamun and a candle - they left it off the bill and wished them a "happy birthday from the entire team" IT WAS THE CUTEST!!! We hosted a surprise 70th birthday here for my mom last Saturday. I cannot express how much I loved the staff, their support and the food!!! All of our almost 30 guests were fed the most yummy food in three separate courses. The staff were extremely attentive to whatever we asked for. We had gone and met with Tushar a couple of times before the event to arrange everything just as we wanted and they nailed it! Also, they allowed us to come early and decorate the place as we wanted a d accepted our cake and balloon deliveries. Ask for Tushar; hell def hook you up of you need to plan a nice event. We went here on Friday night around 8:30 pm. Once we walked in, in spite of several empty tables, w were asked to wait. Once seated, no menu on table, waitstaff was not attentive. Water was eventually brought over but removed once main course arrived.The food is just ok but the service is quite awful. We ordered veg assortment appetizers. They were greasy, heavy of the besan coating and otherwise tasteless. The Veg Biryani had lots of masala/flavor but tasted like something that one would shake on out a masala box from the grocery store. There was jackfruit in the dish that was not cut properly and hence quite fibrous. The veg manchurian with gravy were oily, salty and overly vinegary. There was no rice served with it. The server didn't mention that rice only comes with delivery orders and if we would like some. A floor manager or Front of House staff was walking around but not checking in on guests. There wasn't a query if we would like dessert, if he had any preferences or any specials. This place is ok to go if you'd like to be brought lackluster food and be left alone to eat. On the upside if paying with cash, there is a 5% discount. If you plan to go here, keep your expectations low. If not, you are sure to be disappointed. We have frequented Amiya for a few years. The food is quite good, the interior is elegant. The service was abrupt and it seemed like they were doing us a favor by waiting on our table. My main complaint, however, is that a 15% gratuity is automatically applied to your check. That policy is not at all very transparent and could easily be missed. I'm certain that we have overlooked this many times in the past and double-tipped without the waiter saying anything. So beware of this deceitful practice & really examine your itemized bill. read more
