A quick funny story. I was in a food funk earlier today. Every place I looked at on yelp, I seemed to find something that made me not want to go there(just me being indecisive). I wound up finding this little hole in the wall restaurant called Amore Indio. We pull up and walk in and slowly but surely, I start to see a familiarity. The bar counter, the booths, to go containers(weirdly specific). Then the salsa and chips arrive at the table. It hits me in the childhood. I ask the manager if this location is somehow related to another restaurant in the city of Alhambra? He looks at me with a tiny grin and says "Carambas". I flipped out i felt like I was back in my own backyard. My pop used to take to Carambas when I was a kid, at least twice a month. The food was amazing here at Amore Indio. Seafood enchilada ($12.50): Two enchiladas with crab meat and shrimp, smothered with special sauce, served with avocado, tomato, rice & beans. I didn't really like my lunch. Amor Indio is your run of the mill, generic Mexican restaurant. I am obsessed with trying new places just so I can yelp about them! Amor Indio has your classic shredded beef tacos. Yes, they also serve a 3 item combo (that you can normally find at similar establishments) that includes a taco, enchilada, and chile relleno with rice and beans. I arrived at 2pm for a late lunch. This place was deserted! Good for me because I was famished! You are served chips and salsa immediately upon being seated. Their chips were a little warm (bonus) and the salsa had a decent kick with strong tones of oregano. I am not so fond of strong oregano flavor. I ended up ordering the Burrito Loco and their Chicken Flautas plate (which included rice and beans). Burrito Loco: 3/5 Although this ginormous burrito was daunting, I managed to finish it and the Chicken Flautas plate! :P Normally, restaurants load these beasts with lots of rice and beans. This one was LOADED with shredded beef, chile colorado, and chile verde! The problem with this burrito is that it is just a hodge podge of flavors, making it hard to appreciate. The chunks of chile colorado were juicy. The chunks of chile verde were a little dry and hard. Chicken Flautas: 4/5 MMMMMM! These flautas were loaded with juicy, tasty shreds of chicken. Loved it! Both flautas were a bit soggy on the bottom though... I wanted to try their carne asada, but I didn't have the stomach capacity to do so. Sorry yelpers! Will I be back? Hmmmm, I don't think so. Not because this place is bad, just because there are numerous restaurants like Amor Indio in my area that offer similar quality product. Food was good but not the end all be all for Mexican food. I ordered the chicken machaca plate, which was ok at best.. lacked flavor in my opinion. The chili Verde burrito was very tasty, according to someone in my group. I will say competition is pretty stiff out here in the City of Industry for Mexican food; but they do have good salsa and ample parking in their lot. One draw back is the service, extremely slow and not very attentive to all their tables. Plus they did not tell us that their credit card machine was down. They sat a party of 7 during lunch time and forgot to mention to us that it was cash only since their machine was down... Not a smart move on their part. The place is in an old building...low ceilings...narrow entranceway...men's restroom has a small trough vs urinal...etc... Portions are HUMONGOUS...but BIG doesn't mean good...My Chicken Flautas were good but like I said just normal...the beans were okay...the Spanish rice tasted weird...not sure why...I asked the other guy who was with my group what he thought and he agreed it tasted odd....I asked him cuz he is Mexican and eats authentic Mexican food from what we've discussed before... If i could give it a lower review i would. Came here for my second time during a busy hour. Multiple workers saw me and my family and did not even acknowledge us or tell us they would be with us. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I felt a little awkward standing by the entrance when we first walked in but they acknowledge us and sat us down right away. The menu is simple but the food was very fresh, the salsa was not too spicy and very addicting. I'd give them 5 stars but they had a lot of boxes in one of rooms and it really felt like I was at someone's nana's house with the dated decor. The food is worthy of 4 stars, however the service is poor and worthy of 2. The fact that they don't let you do individual checks when with a large party makes us not want to come back. The waitress had to be flagged down several times for drink refills. When you come with a party of 10, you would expect the server to keep checking on us. Only been there once so far, but already one of my favorite Mexican restaurants outside of Mexico. Couldn't ask for better service. Attentive enough for any need you might have, yet not one of those "hey, thank you for checking in again but we're talking here" hoverstyle waitstaff. Waiters were funny, extremely helpful, saw handshakes welcoming patrons, everyone smiling and having a good time. Food was excellent. Chips and salsa alone are worth coming back for. The food serving. Its fast. I'll give them this, they made exactly what I ordered, faster than any other restaurant I've ever patronized. And we're talking fresh tailor made entrees, not something they already had put together waiting to be served. I'll be going back to this place as often as I can. You should too. read more
