It's been a long time since we last visited Mr. Pollo, and I have no idea why we waited so long to return. Mr. Pollo is a little place in the middle of a small strip center serving up amazing rotisserie chicken and Peruvian dishes. They don't have an extensive menu, but everything is so good. If you plan to eat in the dining area, they would like you to order at the counter first, then find a table to sit. On this recent visit, we ordered the Whole Chicken meal ($32.60), which comes with your choice of two large sides. We got the mashed potatoes & gravy and the beans. This is one of the best rotisserie chickens we've had, and the sides were quite tasty as well. They also have Loma Saltado, Chaufa de Pollo (chicken fried rice), Tallarin Verde con Pechuga de Pollo (chicken served on spaghetti with spinach sauce), and a few other dishes to choose from. It's a very popular place and the dining area is on the small side, so be prepared that you might not find a place to sit. A lot of customers take their orders "to go". I work at a hospital down the street from this place, and it seemed like a good choice to try. I ordered the chaufa de pollo -- big mistake. The dish was served boiling hot in a flimsy clear plastic container, which didn't seem very safe or sustainable. It came with chimichurri and jalapeño sauce on the side. Unfortunately, the food was extremely greasy and tasted like it had been fried in reused oil. The flavor was disgusting, and I ended up throwing the dish in the trash. Came here with a group of 9 people. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. They gave us the wrong side dish (plantains), and when we politely asked about it, the manager argued with us instead of helping and wanted to charge extra for their mistake. Customer service from the manager/owner was not good at all. The lomo saltado was disappointing too -- the beef was very chewy and the sauce was overly salty. The chicken was actually good, and the server did a good job trying to help us. The atmosphere was not comfortable because the restaurant was very smoky from the chicken cooking, and there was no restroom available inside the restaurant. We are creatures of habit and get the family chicken meal and lomo Saltado. Plenty of chimi and green sauce to go please!! My mom is obsessed with their purple chichi drink. Mr Pollo is the sister store of another Peruvian restaurant called Misky Misky (see my other review) the difference is this has a smaller menu, and smaller interior, but the same system of ordering at the counter and they will bring the food to your table. The menu items look familiar, and can possibly be offered at Misky Misky, since they have a pretty extensive menu there. We order 3 dishes: Arroz con pollo. Cilantro rice and grilled chicken. Perfectly grilled chicken with fluffy green rice. Tallarin verde con salmon. Basil spinach pasta with salmon: Pasta had the right chewy texture, with tender salmon. This was our favorite dish. Pechuga Al Chimichurri, grilled chicken with chimichurri, rice and salad. Grilled chicken with a subtle smoky flavor balanced well with a salad. Mr. Pollo is my family's favorite Peruvian restaurant. I still think that the Tallarin Verde, Tallarin Saltado, and Lomo Saltado here are the best in terms of flavors, but they are soooooooo salty now. It tastes as if each ingredient--each noodle, piece of meat, vegetable--was coated in salt. My family had to make steamed unseasoned broccoli on the side to relieve some of the saltiness; otherwise the food would have been nigh unbearable (we had ordered takeout). Also, note that the Tallarin verde comes with chicken by default; if you want beef, you have to order Tallarin verde con bistec (I made this mistake). The chimichurri sauce and aji verde sauces taste amazing! They do charge you extra for if you order extra sauce. I'm not sure how many sauces are included cost-free, but I did get six complimentary sauces for three entrees. I ordered takeout via phone on a Saturday at 11am. The food was ready within 10 minutes. The fries weren't really crispy but the steak was tender. Service was good and we received our food within 15 minutes. Mr Pollo is the more affordable option, so I decided to visit for an extremely late lunch. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall. Its interior is rustic with pale yellow walls decorated with framed Peruvian patterns and light maroon flooring. There is a decent amount of seating in the dining area, maybe 4 tables of four and 6 tables of two. There were only two parties eating here when I arrived. The ambiance was casual. The phone frequently rang, and it seemed like there was a constant stream of people entering to pick up their food, so it seems most people don't dine in. 【Food】 Menu: http://mrpollorestaurant.com/ Since I wasn't super familiar with the menu items, I researched Peruvian cuisine beforehand and learned about chifa, a term describing the Chinese Peruvian culinary fusion that originated from Chinese immigrants (mainly from Guangdong) who arrived in the 19th and early 20th centuries and mostly settled in the coast of Peru and Lima. The Chinese Peruvians eventually imported ingredients and grew Chinese vegetables, although they still couldn't prepare authentic versions of their dishes. Over time, Peruvian chefs began to incorporate these traditional ingredients (e.g., ginger, soy sauce, scallions, etc.) and cooking techniques into their repertoire [1]. Fav Peruvian in the area. I used to go here for pick up very often when I used to live down the street but now I'm further and I only get it when I come by the area to visit family or friends. I still love it, quality still good but they are so cheap with their sauces now. Back then we used to be able to pour how much chimichurri and other green sauce we wanted but I'm sure all the cheap people who over compensated for that and plus the economy, so I get it. A gem in Covina most definitely for some really good Peruvian food ! Lomo saltado is fire here along with their Tallarin verde con bistec. (Green spaghetti and topped with a generous piece of grilled beef steak (not sure what cut) or grilled chicken. I haven't tried their rotisserie chicken but nextime for sure. They work fast here and on occasions, they will not pick up the phone if you call in . There is a dining area but space and seats are limited. Don't get me wrong their food in the past has always been the best and they have never disappointed . I had been craving the pollo so I called in an order. They really dropped the ball and I'm never going back. On Sunday we ordered chicken for pickup and when we came home to eat and opened the bag the fries were all black and not even cooked thoroughly. They told us it was going to be a one hour wait for fresh chicken which we said yeah no problem we don't mind waiting.... They gave us old chicken. I kid you not I had to throw away most of it. But the last couple times, it's been really salty and barely had any meat. I get that prices have gone up, but when you're paying roughly $20 for a plate, you expect more than mostly salty fries and veggies. The rice is cooked with the chicken seasoning and has a garlic flavor. The Tallarin verde con asada is the best I have ever had hands down! I just want to keep eating more. It was very savory and delicious, considering we were starving. Beef was a little on the overcooked side, and the French fries kind of reminded me of the ones you buy in the store and air fry up. Still, tasted good to us as hungry people. 2) Pollo Saltado: 7/10. Chicken was good and charred-tasting. This was much wetter than the Lomo Saltado, but flavor was still good. 3) Tallarin Saltado with Chicken: 7/10. It was a good food to share since they gave a big portion but noodles were bland in my opinion. The chicken was good again but matched with the bland noodles made for an unsatisfying bite. Love this place so much. Small chickens, slow rotisserie cooked, fantastic flavors. The same cost as a fast food meal these days but for three times (3x) the amount, the quality, and flavor. Fun little humble restaurant. Orders usually take longer on the weekends (oftentimes over 30 mins bc good things take time) when they're the busiest. Truly a gem. Love his hidden gem! Been coming here for about a decade, it's been a while since I've been back, glad to see they made it through the pandemic. They get quite busy during weekday lunch rush and even on the weekends. It's a very small restaurant so, order in advance or expect a wait and hopefully you get a table but the food have always been consistent thats why we love coming here. The only difference I noticed was the lack of salsas, we use to be able to bring the bottle to the table but now I believe they limit to 2 salsa's per order.
