My husband ordered the old fashioned and I ordered the double down. We ended up switching because we liked each other's drinks more! I prefer old fashioneds when they are less straight booze and my husband prefers straight booze. The place is super small but the bartender is very welcoming and helps find spaces for everyone. This was a great cocktail bar. My daughter and I lucked out and got the last two seats at the bar as we walked in. It is a small place but very cozy and full of fun people. They were having a Halloween-themed evening, and we had the greatest time. They had a smoke machine going and low lighting. They were playing various Halloween and Heavy metal tunes which made for the perfect Halloween spirit. I have never seen a larger collection of bitters and Amaro in one place. I am a cocktail fan, to say the least, but This took the cake. There was so much to try, but I drank their spin on a French 75 all evening. It was SO GOOD! Bias note: My favorite alcohol happens to be amaro and this place specializes in amaro (and/or bitters as per the name.) For those unaware, this wonderful Italian liqueur has a wide variety of flavors depending on what botanicals and spices are used. They tend to be bitter or a mix of bitter and sweet outside of a few amari on the more sweeter end with my preference being Nonino, Montenegro, and Majora. I have been to this cocktail bar a couple of times but I don't really remember much from the first couple times so my review is only for the most recent experience. As I was going here prior to going to a dinner, I went with a less alcoholic drink. One of the seasonal cocktails was the Calabrian Nights with Vecchio de Capo, Cocchi Rosa, Dry Vermouth, Alpino Bitters, and Seltzer and it was 12% APV instead of the usual 21/27%. They described the flavors as birch, nutmeg, and amarena (or sour) cherry. There was a slight sourness as well as a good amount of bitterness and I found the cocktail to be refreshing. Very tasty. This place is a bitters bar, there's no doubt about it. The name of the place even stands for "Love and Bitter". It's an intimate space with a cool vibe with bar seating and some standing areas. They advertise themselves as a bitters tasting room and all their drinks have some bitter component in them. My first drink was the sharpie mustache ($17) which was stiff but balanced and good. The tiki bitters came out to give it the island vibe. My second drink was the arms full of flowers ($17) which was bright and a little fruity. It was dry and an interesting drink. If you're not a fan of bitter drinks, you might not like this place. However, if you're an adventurous drinker who wants to see if you might like bitter drinks, this is the perfect place to get an introduction and get eased into them. I would highly recommend it though because it's a wonderful world and the drinks are great. Drinks are strong, but purposeful and intense. Averaging around 25% ABV and some of them hitting up to 31%+! These drinks will take you in for a ride, but the intensity, complexity, and long lasting mouthfeel will really feel you in. Granted, the alcohol is very strong and will probably get a lot of people, but it's worth it. Sharpie: lots of citrus touch, intense syrup, sweet, fruity, slight butters. The classic for a good reason, although very viscous and that gives it more if an in your face than an elegant, long lasting flavor. Stranger: even more citrus with lemon and orange, fresh, lots of bitters that last a while, very herbaceous. Favorite drink of the night Farewell to hell: tasted like licorice, so lots of anise and fennel, that's from the vermouth. Didn't have the complexity of the other drinks as the vermouth really overpowered. Still pretty fresh and citrus was a slight touch. read more

Decent but nothing to write home about. Service was a bit iffy. What a great find! Was exploring the East Village and on the way to another bar, but saw this place and felt compelled to try it out. Ended up being a great experience - nicely crafted cocktails with an emphasis on amaros and bitters. Menu apparently changes all the time which I can imagine only keeps it more interesting. Cocktail nerd haven. My perfect kinds of drinks - short, complex, varied, and well-balanced. Bartenders know their stuff, I told them a very vague idea of what I wanted and they hit me with a great rec. I wanted something on the alpine side, and they had something on their summer menu that used their homemade amaro, hit every note I wanted. Also had the Mr Sharpie and it's a classic for a reason. The bartenders are happy to geek out with you and talk through anything you have questions about. They also offered to make me something off-menu to fit what I wanted, and I will definitely take them up on that offer next time I go. The drinks here were absolutely to die for! I got an espresso drink. I cannot remember the name of it, But it was so strong and tasty at the same time. I am a lightweight so one of these drinks was enough to give me a buzz. The bartenders were extremely nice! I was a klutz and spilled my drink. They immediately made me a new one. My friend ordered a gin and tonic and the tonic syrup they use is made in house. It is absolutely delicious. I've been a longtime fan of Ravi DeRossi's bars but somehow never made it to the hole in the wall that is Amor y Amargo. That is until recently when I learned that we'd be leaving NY soon.. I took advantage of farewell catch-ups with friends and came here twice. It helped that the pandemic meant they had sidewalk/outdoor seating as opposed to before when it was a shoebox of a space. Came back for a second visit after many years and after they failed in Williamsburg. Honestly you don't need a second location people will travel far distances if you focus on consistency. The menu was completely different from my last visit here:( so no delicious rice pudding tasting heavenly drink but they had some new treats. I came with three people on this newest venture and all our drink were okay. Very bitter forward. For the strawberry cocktail I expected more of it; at least in smell. The other two drinks tasted identical with one smelling a bit more lemony seeing as it has a larger rind in it that was expected. Overall it was just okay but if you like negronis or any other bitter beverages this current selection will be right up your alley. Living in East Village, we'd gone by this place hundreds of times, always stopping to peak in the window. There is a certainly a lot of intrigue to a bitters bar. Savvy drinkers could obviously ask for things off the menu, but nothing on the menu really jumped off the page for me. I got a cognac drink which was quite good and my girlfriend asked the friendly server if he could fix something that had a smoky flavor. It was essentially a smoky old fashioned which she really enjoyed. All the service people were incredible and there was a great ambiance. There is a man in a Knicks jersey that apparently sets up out front every Friday night with a jukebox and dances his heart out. We found a seat in the front of the bar and were quite tickled by the bonus entertainment. read more
