I love Amphora. It's one of the few all-inclusive breakfast/lunch/dinner diners that's open 24 hours. Sure, you can go to a big chain like IHOP or Denny's, but you can't get that home-made southern comfort type feeling unless you go to a place like Amphora. Most days, my friends and I will go to the Vienna location on our way home from a night on the town. But because I live in Herndon, I do go to the Amphora diner every so often. I recently re-visited the diner after having not eaten there in about a year, and it was every bit as good as it was before. One of my favorite things about the restaurant is the "Orange Cow". It's basically a root beer float, but with orange soda instead of root beer. I also love all the variations of eggs benedict on the menu and also all the variations of grilled cheese sandwiches. Yes, Amphora isn't the cleanest or fastest or friendliest diner out there, but it's easily one of the tastiest. read more

Came here for an early dinner with some family this weekend and we're seated immediately. Our server Mila was very sweet and attentive, always offering to refill our drinks or get us anything we needed. The food itself was nothing exciting. The menu at Amphora is literally a book. There are so many things to choose from that it's overwhelming and took my family a good 15 minutes to decide what we wanted. (I do appreciate that they serve breakfast all day!) I ordered the chili and shared a turkey club with my sister. The chili was good, but nothing special. The turkey club was honestly not great. The meat was very dry and the sandwich had so little dressing on it that it was unappetizing. We tried to get help from one waitress and she brushed us off and pointed to our waitress who was busy with other customers. The manager, who was dressed usually casual in a maybe polo when he's staff are wearing white shirts and black ties, seems to be interested more in a mobile phone of a customer at the bar than his customers, slammed some papers down after talking to a waiter, had outburst with a another waitress. Very different (worse) overall experience than last week at vienna location. Thankfully our waitress, Aida, was as usual top notch, and the chunky Chocolate Slice was to die for. read more

I hadn't been here in quite some time and was all prepared to give it 2 stars. However, based on tonight's meals, I feel that it does deserve an extra star. First of all, we noticed the new menu format (well...new to us anyway!). It's a lot easier to spot the specials. The old menues had a clip-on piece of paper that listed the specials. That wasn't a good system since many times you would get a menu minus the specials. Now, the first page of the menu has the specials listed in what appears to be a clear pocket, so it's easy to change it from day to day. I've always thought that Amphora's strong suit was breakfast. Lunch and dinner were always *meh*---pretty forgettable. The only exception is the Sunday Soup of the Day (at least I think it's still around) Egg Lemon Rice Soup (aka "avgolemono")---Amphora always did a good job with this. Tonight, I got an omelet with cheddar cheese, bacon and tomatoes. It came with home fries and toast. The omelet was made as I requested. Normally, saying that is unremarkable but at Amphora, the servers don't write down orders so screw-ups sometimes happen. The home fries were well prepared---flavorful and not dried out. My husband got the BLT. The bacon portion was generous, as was the lettuce. The tomatoes were poor quality, kind of mealy. That may be in part because cheap winter tomatoes aren't generally the best quality. My Dad ordered one of the daily specials, Shepard's Pie. It said it was spicy but he didn't think so. The portion size was huge (he couldn't finish it) and it came with green beans that were suprisingly good. They were cooked tender-crisp. The special menu also includes a cup of the soup of the day which was tomato Provencal soup. It had rice in it and was spicy. Also, a salad came with the meal. That was surprisingly attractively presented with good quality cherry tomatoes. Overall, service was good. Our waiter was very friendly and competent. I do think the place could use a remodeling as the booth we sat in had saggy and torn cushions. After a not so great experience with their bakery goods, I have been reluctant to try any again. One time we saw a cake that looked good and took a piece home only to find out it was dried out, stale and tasteless. Things might be better now but I'm not too willing to try that again! Bottom line --- if you order off the breakfast menu, you won't be disappointed. However, if you order off the lunch/dinner menu it's a real crapshoot. read more

This place is so hit or miss. My first time here was pretty good: we were part of a big group for breakfast, but the server was attentive and the food was pretty good and affordable. My second time here was for a business lunch. The server was not as attentive, and the food was kinda bland. I got a shrimp pasta dish, and i feel like it could easily have been from a Bertolli's frozen dinner bag. Actually, Bertolli's is better. At least it comes with actual pasta! There were mushrooms on my dish (which I hate), even though it didn't say in the description that there were mushrooms. Today is my third time here and I'm really disappointed. Our server, Mary, didn't check on us once after she gave us our food. She seemed to spend a lot of her time just talking to her friends. Our drinks were empty for over half of our dining experience. My biscuits were really hard (wasn't like that my first time), and the bacon was over cooked and had a weird, "old" taste to it. I also originally ordered two breakfast meals (I was really hungry!): Biscuits with gravy (comes with home fries) and a two eggs with bacon meal (comes with home fries and toast). She suggested that I modify my meal to just get biscuits with gravy and then just add on eggs and bacon. Not too big a deal, but I found it unnecessary. She was kinda pushy about getting me to change my order to a smaller one. Was she trying to tell me I was fat and didn't need the carbs?? I also noticed that there is a "meals tax tax" (not just meals tax. Meals tax tax) added on to your bill. It's not much, only $0.65 on a subtotal of $25.84. But I'm still wondering what it is and why they charge us for it? There is a separate VA tax. Did they just separate something that is usually grouped together (in terms of tax at Virginia dining establishments)? I never thought I would dislike bacon, or that there was a wrong way to cook bacon or make it taste bad, but today's bacon was just gross. There are also some really obnoxiously loud groups here sometimes--families with screaming kids and the like. But then sometimes, it's nice and quiet and actually kinda empty. A solid 3. A co-worker of mine wanted to give this place a shot, so we packed up and left for lunch. It has a real diner look from the outside, but the inside is slightly upscale. It has the usual, ultra ginormeous menu that most diners have, and of course the dessert display. I ordered the gyro, after the waiter recommended it, my fiance the meatloaf sandwich and my co-worker got the chicken fajita tortillas. My gyro - was well, huge. Unfortunately, the meat was a little salty and dry. The rest of the meal including fries were good though. Fiance's Meatloaf - She did not like the fact that it had small bones and other hard things in it. Taste was ok. Co-worker's tortillas - He enjoyed em and finished the entire plate. I can't help but love Amphora. There is something so hilariously charming about never knowing what kind of service you're going to get (personality, nationality, accuracy), but somehow or another my food always tastes good, it's always quick, and the variety should make anyone's palate happy. I live nearby so it's our go-to for weekend breakfast/brunch, and the occasional dinner when we can't figure out what we want to eat. Also good for 2 AM munchies. The dessert case tempts me every time and they do have some darn good cakes, pies and cookies. Their breakfast choices recently expanded to include even more delicious breakasty items, my go-to is the create your own omelette as they have so many choices of fillings and the omelettes themselves are quite large. It was almost 3:30am and we were somewhat hungry after leaving the Halloween party in D.C. Since we are unfamiliar with DC, we did not want to search for 24-hour restaurants in the wee morning hours. We returned to VA and proceeded to search Google for a 24-hour eatery. Denny's was completely out of the question, but we considered IHop. We wanted something different, so we found Amphora and GoogleMaps led us there. There were a few patrons, but it was somewhat empty. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our waiter (tall, dark and handsome) was nice and eager to take our order. He brought out menus, water and returned at least three times to see if we were ready to order. It took us a while because their menu is a booklet with multiple pages filled with a large variety of foods. I was impressed that they offered such a huge selection and he did not say certain things were unavailable at that time of the morning. I love red velvet cake, so I could not resist the red velvet pancakes. My friend ordered waffles. I must confess and say that the pancakes did not look that great on the plate. However, they were absolutely delicious! I loved them! The eggs were lukewarm, but the bacon was good. We appreciated the attentiveness of our waiter and the fact that the place was clean, spacious and comfortable. You can pay at the register. The bathroom was clean, but the trash needed to be emptied. The next time I am out and about in the wee morning hours, Amphora will be my spot! read more

Good nice little diner off of Elden Street. My friend and I went in on a wednesday night around 11PM for some dessert. I was Surprised as to how much food they serve in this place. The menu was bigger than the Cheescake Factory's menu. They have all typoes of food ranging from breakfast-Lunch-Dinner. What also surprised me is this place serves alcohol. Imagine a slightly upscale silver diner that serves alcohol as well. I tried the White Chocolate Mousse Raspberry cake. It was pretty good but for some reason halfway through it i felt it was too rich. Take: Go here for dessert definitely if you are in the are and want some late night sweets. (They are open 24 hours) I personally think i will only be back if it is really late and other dessert places are closed. So I was looking for a good breakfast spot @ 8am...some places didn't open until 9am but Amphora is open 24/7 and they have a ton of great reviews and I see why! It's a true diner in every sense of the word, the decor inside and the look of the outside is old school/back in the day so I was expecting some good eats. It didn't disappoint. Their menu is extensive! Your brain will be strategizing..."breakfast, hmm; lunch...possibly, dinner no dinner maybe breakfast! Got dammit!" I couldn't decide so I wanted something that wouldn't be too heavy so breakfast and dinner were out and I ended up choosing the Caribbean salad with grilled salmon. THIS. MF. SALAD. IS. DELICIOUS. The waitress even said, "good choice, you're really going to like it" I don't think I've ever been told that in all my restaurant-going-life. I thought, she must say that about everything on the menu. Nope, she was 100% right. This salad had flavors, textures, it had everything. The field greens, avocado, candied walnuts, red/yellow peppers (I took these off, I just like peppers sauteéd, not raw), sweet smooth mango, julienned oranges, and a delicious citrus vinaigrette. I love the HUGE menu and generous portions at Amphora. My family and I have celebrated many occasions here and most recently, went for a Mother's Day Brunch. The lines were pretty long to get a table, but it was a nice day, so I wasn't too upset. My cousins ordered Breakfast food for the entire table and we ate family-style. I really like how their Turkey Sausages are not cased in pork. They are delicious! We also had omelettes, scrabbled eggs, salmon omelet, vegetarian omelet, french toast (had a coconut flavor to it), toast, hash browns, and pancakes. Everything came out perfectly cooked. Nothing was greasy or burned. Oh! I I forgot the BEST part! My brother and I split a turkey, roast beef, and pastrami sandwich. It was superb. The pastrami was mouthwatering and gave me the perfect salty fix to the sweet pancakes and french toast. Parking can be a little overwhelming in the front, but feel free to grab a spot behind the restaurant. Ample park is aways available and it's not a long walk. read more

I came here on a Sunday night with my mom. There was a group of teens, all female, who were just super loud and obnoxious already seated. I was SO DISAPPOINTED that the host seated us right across the aisle from them. It was not a good move at all. I was trying to have a quiet meal with my mother, but we are seated near the rowdiest, and loudest group of girls in the restaurant. There were plenty of open booths near other 2-people parties they could have seated us at. I felt so uncomfortable until the table finally left. The food definitely was not as good as my previous experience. Wings were decent; plentiful and large. The buffalo sauce was a little thin. I also ordered the Steak and Eggs, but the steak was lacking and tough. To sum it up, Amphora is an OK spot. Atmosphere is a little awkward, I don't know if its because of the other diners or the service, which is fairly slow. But it's a decent alternative to Ihop or Denny's read more

The only time I ever tried anything from Amphora was at a bridal show, so I decided to try out their Diner - a couple of my coworkers also recommended I stop by. My husband had the eggs benedict and carrot cake for dessert. I had the spicy bloody mary, chorizo omelet and banana cream pie. My husband said that his dishes were fine, nothing was amazing. He did love the coffee though. The bloody mary wasn't too spicy and I don't think they really put any alcohol in there. The chorizo omelet was okay. I was expecting Mexican chorizo where it's got a good, spicy kick and the consistency of the chorizo is kind of shredded/ground meat. This was more like smoky Spanish chorizo. All I can say about it is that it wasn't overcooked and the ingredients seemed pretty fresh. I tried the carrot cake and can say that Gateau Cakes in Warrenton offers an outstanding carrot cake, blowing Amphora's version away. Has anyone been to the Marie Callender's chain? I LOVE their banana cream pie - this also beats Amphora's, big time. Although our meal was only ok, I'm open to giving the Diner another shot as their menu is pretty extensive AND they're open 24-hours. We met friends here one night looking for some good diner food. In general, it was just that. The lamb kabobs were good, but the lamb stew was lacking. The lamb itself was tasty, but the amount of fat that needed to be trimmed was too much and made for an unpleasant meal. The kids had burgers, and they were very good. This place gets bumped up a star after my most recent visit. Ordered the pick 2 -- (Chicken Breast Club Triple Decker Sandwich / Garden Salad with Ranch) and it did not disappoint! If I come back, I will probably stick with this selection. It was priced right as being one of the cheaper menu options The meal came out on a single plate to give you an idea of portion. The bacon on the sandwich was cooked perfectly (this place is a diner, what did you expect?), and overall the sandwich was just great. Had a real good flavor with large slices of marinated chicken. The half you get with the pick 2 is still pretty big, even for half a sandwich. The salad was not your typical garden salad covered in cheese and croutons, but had a good variety of fresh greens and vegetables and generally tasted fresh and crisp. The star of the salad for a "loosen the belt, pants-filler" such as myself is the ranch dressing. The ranch here is about the best I've had anywhere, and I'm somewhat of a ranch snob. Bottom line if you come here... order something that comes with bacon, and find a way to work some ranch into the meal. You should be leaving happy. Most of the food is good -- gyro, chicken souvlaki, and the buffalo chicken wrap are all tasty, and breakfast all day is fun (get the eggs benedict plaka - eggs topped with gyro meat). Treat yourself to a slice of strawberry cheesecake. This is the kind of place where you can come for weeks and order something different every time - the menu is expansive. We come to Amphora quite often for both breakfast and dinner. Service never disappoints and they truly have menu items for anyone. Our personal favorites are the waffles (with fresh strawberries and whip cream), pancakes (blueberry and autumn harvest), corned beef hash (best thing on the menu imo), spinach artichoke dip (great value), and the Island Hopper trio. First experience: got the Southwestern Benedict and they topped it with some generic, cold salsa. Woulda been 10x better with something other than Pace Picante. The hollandaise wasn't anything to rave about either. Bad ingredients = bad food. Second experience: the Texas boy got himself some country fried steak. Too salty, and instead of one bigass steak, they cut it up into four small steaks....sacrilege. And after tax, it cost $15. Overpriced for such a pedestrian meal. I am walked in to pick up food delivery for a customer and was greeted by a man with a short pink wig on and nasty attitude pointing up a finger for me to wait. He said the order was ready but I needed to wait. He proceeded to text on his phone and engage in conversation with a male worker dressed in a white coat and black bow tie. After about 8 minutes of just standing there being ignored I walked over to the counter and asked if the order was ready and the male with pink wig rudely said I will get it to you it's ready but you need to wait. I was nervous as I had to pick up another order with the one I was waiting for and did not understand the need for a wait if the order was ready. The customer canceled the order because I was one of many drivers sent to pick it up, it was late at night, and I guess they were tired of waiting too. The situation escalated when both the manager (old man) and guy with pink wig started yelling at me saying I needed to wait just like at a bank for a teller. They are rude, disrespectful, and need to learn how to treat people with respect. DO NOT pick up food delivery here. The man with pink wig gave me a thumbs down and filed a fake report against me to get me in trouble when I did nothing wrong and recorded the entire incident on body camera.
