We came here to celebrate my (Bengali) Dad's 83rd birthday and had a decent experience overall. The food was pretty good (some dishes were much better than others), the service was friendly but quite slow, and the setting was basic but pleasant enough. Our family of 4 (3 adults and 1 child) shared the following (and had leftovers): 1) Chicken egg roll - just okay 2) Mutton cutlet - quite tasty 3) Fish fry - okay 4) Jhal Murdi - delicious but spicy 5) Kosha mangsho (goat) - excellent 6) Tawa roti - nice and soft 7) Luchi and aloo dum - pretty good 8) Shrimp malai curry - pretty good 9) Puchka - good, though the water was lacking a bit in flavor 10) Singarda - quite good, with Eastern Indian spices that differentiated it from a North Indian/Punjabi samosa 11) Nolen gurer Sandesh - remarkably good! (Don't miss it!) The staff was friendly but service slowed down considerably when a big party showed up. We had to flag down the staff to order dessert (and didn't order tea at the end of our meal as we desired, as we were told the wait for tea at that point in time would be 40 minutes - quite shocking!) and get our check. The restaurant was simply decorated. The bathroom was a bit disappointing - they were out of toilet paper. Overall, we enjoyed our meal here and wished the service has been faster. read more

Egg roll: too many vegetables inside and it was too soggy and not good. 3. Mughlai paratha (egg only): this was good. While the description says grilled, it is certainly fried. Even my 3 year old liked it. 4..veggie cutlet: this was the best item today as this is beetroot based and first time I had a beetroot based cutlet. Yummy. 5. A local small business specializing in small bites likely inspired by its namesake region, Kolkata/Calcutta. We came in expecting more but were still satisfied with their selection of puff pastries. Tucked in a small lot frequented by locals, Calcutta Chaat and Bakery takes over a spot that has been challenging for eateries before its time. The parking spots are tight but they're abundantly vacant due to the low traffic here. Sharing space with a small specialty grocery store, a popular pizza shop, and some after school tutoring programs, I can see this place easily being visited by those on the go in the midst of their errand runs. With its grand opening, we thought we'd come in and give it a try. As we walked in, we traversed the awkwardly long hallway up to the counter near the entrance to the kitchen. On the way up to the counter, we passed by a glass case of what seemed to be a refrigerated unit for some of their sweets and drinks, all vibrantly colored. We were greeted by the friendly staff and were offered menus but we kindly told them that we were simply browsing to check out their baked goods. Advertised as a bakery, I had thought they'd have a bit more breads and carb loaded bites but they only had a mere table top warmer of pastries. Despite the limited selection, some of their items were quite intriguing and so we decided to get one, their paneer puff, to try. The pastry the size of your hand was served with a bit of red sauce that had a slight spice and tang to it. It served well as a dipping sauce and after about 8 bites, the whole thing was gone. The exterior was crispy and buttery - what you'd expect from a puff pastry! The interior was good in flavor but lacking in amount. Since we shared, the bite I took did end up having a bit of the chewy cheese curds marinated in some type of yellow sauce but it wasn't much nor was it spread out evenly in the pastry. Some bites didn't have any paneer at all, unfortunately. The bites that did have it all had a good mix of flavor and texture - definitely a nice quick snack to hold you down until a real meal. At about four bucks, it certainly wasn't cheap but I suppose reasonable given the effort and spices going into making such a flavorful snack. They had a few tables for seating inside and I feel the pastry didn't do it justice given their full placard menu. I'd like to come back to try the other items they have but it would be tough for me to come into this mall without first visiting my favorite pizza joint next door. Perhaps a partnership is in order! Overall, Calcutta Chaat and Bakery isn't much of a bakery as it is more known for its chaat, or small bites. With a small space in a quiet mall, it can be intimate and homey for those looking to just grab some bites over some chai or coffee. It deserves another visit but perhaps a bit more marketing in the form of deals or specials could help drive some more traffic to come check it out. Until next time! read more

I've been here a few times now, this is one of the few restaurants in the Bay that serves Bengali food. I've tried a variety of items from the menu, I'd say my favorites are the roshogolla, mughlai porota, and mutton cutlets. I also tried the mutton biryani, but it wasn't really Kolkata style in my opinion. I was really craving indochinese noodles-- which can really vary in flavor and texture, but this place did the trick! I ordered online for takeout veg chow mein, Gobi, Manchurian, sweet corn soup. Lots of vegetarian options, and the place does not smell meaty. The place is in a strip mall, nestled in a corner. The interior is definitely no frills; bright orange walls. Service was fast and food tasted great at home as well as as leftovers a few days later. Will definitely return for takeout when I have my next Indo Chinese craving. read more

Hands down the best chowmein and Manchurian I have had in the Bay Area. Very authentic and brings back memories from the street food Indo Chinese vendors back in India. Yesterday for dinner, we visited Calcutta Chat and Bakery in Ardenwood Plaza, and it turned out to be an unexpected delight. We initially went looking for a South Indian restaurant, but since it was temporarily closed, we decided to try this place -- and we're really glad we did. The food was excellent. We ordered the chicken fried rice, veg chow mein, and a Calcutta King Egg Roll. The Indo-Chinese dishes had that authentic street-style flavor -- bold, balanced, and satisfying. The egg roll was slightly spicy but very enjoyable. We also spoke briefly with someone from the team, who shared that their Indo-Chinese recipes are rooted in Tangra, a neighborhood in Calcutta known as the birthplace of this unique fusion cuisine. I believe that the restaurant has good potential with dishes, but service is incredibly slow, and the dishes come out in an odd order (our specific group had the laccha paratha given to us last). I don't mean to sound judgmental as the waitstaff were incredibly kind, but the service took a long time. Also something to note, a lot of the dishes were not available at the time we ordered so it is worth calling and checking ahead of time whether certain things are available. We were craving Kathi rolls and drove here to give it a try. I was surprised to find Kolkata street style Kathi rolls instead of the thick naan/lachha paratha stuffed with seekh/kababs. If you're familiar with Bengali cuisine or would like to try, this would be a good place. Food - Reminds one of the food in Kolkata. Everything we tried was authentic and tasty! We had the jhaal mudi which had the hint of mustard oil, very typical. Chicken and egg Kathi roll with indo-Chinese flavors, again just like I remember from my days in Kolkata. Veg chowmein, gobhi manchurian and Bengali fish fry were all very good. We were too full to try their desserts but they had Misti Doi, Sondesh and Rasgullas that I want to try during my next visit. Service - It was slow to start with, we had to wait longer than usual for our order, maybe they didn't have their full staff yet but it picked up once we saw more servers. I order from here almost weekly. Select items are really good. My favorites are the gobi manchurian, veg cutlet, egg devil (it's a stuffed egg bonda) I also like their veg and egg fried rice - they do add a lot of black pepper but you can ask them to tone it down I've also tried jhaal muri, samosa chaat and sandwich and did not like them - they were overly spiced and lacking any other flavor. the complex is pretty quiet and no restaurant has survived for long - however, every time I visit this place is packed. hopefully they can work out the spice issues and stay for a while. read more

Had a great experience having dinner at the Calcutta Chaat and Bakery restaurant . The beauty of this place is they are always trying to reinvent themselves by adding variety to their menu . During this season (Nov 2025) they have added Tawa fish, mutton RoganJosh, Murg malai(to name a few) and each are made to the perfection. The service is top notch with all the people working hard to serve freshly cooked food as soon as it is made. Bengali song in the background and soothing ambience complemented the total experience. The wife and I came in here to check out their Jamai Shasthi thaali special. We liked everything, the cuisine is Bengali and very authentic, the cooking, spices, and food itself is as close to what you will get at Kolkata, if not better. The thali came with rice, papad, potato jhuri bhaja and a slice of lime, it had musur daal, enchore (unripe jackfruit) curry, prawn malaikari, rui maacher kalia, and goat curry for the entrees, and a gigantic chhanar jilipi and slice of mango for dessert. The daal and malaikari gravy were exceptional, and so was the goat curry, with overtones of tomato unlike most other Indian places where you get mutton. The prawn and the fish were very good quality, and the goat was seasoned and cooked to perfection. They also sell Indo-Chinese food, we ordered chilli chicken and mixed chow mein to take home with us, those are great too! The ambience is also very nice, brightly painted walls with contemporary watercolor prints, clean tables, and friendly staff (including the owner / head chef). We will very likely go there again and again to try their other awesome dishes (different kinds of thalis, bengali snacks (rolls, Indo-Chinese, fish cutlets), sweets, etc) they have in their menu. read more
