He made sure we had everything we needed and was very helpful with every step of our dining experience. The food was all hot, fresh and delicious. We had the chicken tandoori, tikka masala, naan, basmati, chicken biryani and ice creams. Everyone chowed down and it was quiet while everyone ate which tells me how much everyone liked the food! Food is delicious here! The food deff has a lot of spice as it's indian food but it's delicious. Easy to make online orders for delivery or for pickup. My favorite is the chicken biryani , sambosa chat, garlic bread, chicken thikka masala. I'm quite sad to downgrade my review of this place for 2 main reasons. (1) Over the last few weeks, the food has gotten very greasy. There's half an inch of grease floating on top of the food, which then I have pour out into the garbage before eating, gross. (2) also the spice level is not at all adjustable. After all my time going here over the past few years, I came to the conclusion that their quality dropped because of the pandemic, but it's authentic and usually really good. In the past, they had rugs to provide for people to pray on. I'm not sure if the rugs are still there, but that says a lot. If you want the best, Anarkali, plan ahead to eat there. Everything is made fresh. It is one of those places you order at the front, but they will bring the food out to you. It seems the norm to get your silverware and water at the station on the left of the counter. Also, free chai tea. Just a tip to think that you're in a different country when you enter or order here. It's not some chai tea latte from Starbucks, so try it first. If you are new or might be risk averse to authentic and spicy food, the chicken leg tandoori is a really good option. Otherwise, you might find yourself with something very spicy. If you eat a lot of meat, consider ordering two legs. They bring it out cooking on those black pans (claypot or iron type) with onions. The chicken/vegetable tikka masala or (machlee) fish curry are my favorite dishes. Vegetable tikka masala has been historically more spicy than when they added chicken. The (machlee) curry is the second least spicy dish I have had there, after the chicken leg tandoori. I believe it could be cod? These with garlic or plain naan. They don't add butter, and still good. Onion naan tastes funky, as if it were cooked with meat or something, or maybe it's the type of onion. I have tried other things here in the past, but the spices have been too strong and would upset my stomach. That or the dishes were not my cup of tea. You can always wash it down with mango lassi. It doesn't have that strong yogurt taste to me. It's more like just a yummy mango drink. I would not recommend the following dishes, which you might not be accustomed to. Prawn kabob because it wasn't marinated and still had the original sea taste. Piazi seekh kabob was also not marinated to take flavor away from the meat itself and had the spicy flare. Tadka daal wasn't too bad (lentils), but it was spicy, of course. Bengun bharta was good and spicy, but I think it was too much, and my stomach didn't like it. Again, remember where you are because the chicken coconut curry is obviously not Japanese or Thai. For some reason, I thought it would taste like that before? It tastes similar to the machlee (fish) curry, not too spicy. Once in a while, I ventured to try these other dishes, but I would end up going back to my favorites. Continues to be the most consistent and delicious Indian food I can get in the bay area. Thick and flavorful curries. Fluffy yet crispy naan. If you ask for it to be spicy, it's perfect. Good kick and gives you that head-high but not over the top that you can't finish the dish. I really have to sing praises for the consistency. So many places are hit or miss depending on the visit. Randomly came upon this little gem and it's great for flavorful and authentic Indian spot that's not expensive and really feeds a family. We went with the classic tikka masala, coconut curry and lamb biriyani with garlic, onion and traditional naan. The naan was soft and fluffy so the reheat the next day kept them toasty and doughy. This is a great Northwest Indian/Pakistani restaurant. The food was extremely authentic and worthwhile. A true gem. The tea flows and keeps flowing. The proprietor is a very kindly gentlemen who was very involved in our enjoyment and extremely forthcoming. Ask him about the name. Hmm, really puzzled by how different my experience was from what the yelp ratings reflect. Came here to pick up dinner after a long drive down from Oregon. My family and I were tired and so so hungry that just about anything sounded good. We agreed on Indian because we hadn't eaten it in weeks. Although we had never tried this place, it was on the way so we decided to try this one out. I'll say this: probably the last time we will ever "try this one out". We ordered a chicken tikka masala, a lamb seekh kebab, rice, and 2 orders of naan! The chicken tikka masala honestly tasted like straight tomato paste/ tomato soup. No flavor, no spice (even though we ordered them spicy), and barely any chicken. I don't even know how to explain my experience because it really wasn't a good one! It may have been one of the worst chicken tikka masalas I have had! My mom doctored up the masala today for lunch leftovers and added some major flavor+spice which made it 300 times better than what we were given.. The naan was fluffy and not burnt which I loved, but honestly the chicken's lack of flavor sort of ruined the whole experience for us! We've been coming here for almost 2 years straight now maybe at least 1x a month and what's incredible is that their food is always consistently good. Some restaurants it depends on who is cooking that day or what time of day you're dining there (early or late) and that can change the quality of the food but they are solid. Really great Indian food and their chicken tikka masala is out of this world. It's a bit sparse inside and not a great amount of air conditioning so we typically just do take-out and they are SUPER fast to cook and have it ready by the time we get there. My new favorite Indian restaurant. Going with 5 stars because the food was just so good. Ambience is perfectly fine but a bit a bit plain. Not a problem though, taking into account quality of the eats and price. We ordered lamb biryani, lamb tikka masala and fish curry. Also garlic naan, some extra raita and kheer for dessert. ALL were exceptional. The lamb was tender and well seasoned. The fish curry among the best I've had. Kheer smooth and subtly flavored. Just a big yum all the way around. Happily for me I read the earlier reviews and so was aware one needed to order, take the number and get one's own flatware and water. Easy peasy. My gf discovered this place during COVID and we have to say, we're happy with their offerings. Their flavors are mostly different than the other Indian restaurants and dishes in Walnut Creek, but if you missed the flavors from Naan 'n' Curry, their saag paneer and their tikka masala are identical, if not darn close. I'm not sure if there's a relationship between the two entities, but their saag is just as thick and dark as N&C used to be, and the curry is just as rich and addictive. We'll rotate through our various favorites, but we're really happy Anarkali is around. The food gets out pretty quickly after you order at Anarkali, much faster than Naan n Curry which makes you wait on average about 45 minutes. You order at the counter, they give you a number, and you can sit at any table. You get your own beverages, plates, utensils and napkins. I enjoy the free chai as well. My favorites include the palak paneer and the lamb biryani. There are not as many bits of paneer as I would want, but for the price I will not complain. The bengun bharta is spicy and the I like the tadka daal. The chicken tikka is ok, but again I would prefer the palak paneer and the lamb biryani. Overall the prices are affordable and the food is good. There is plenty of parking and I have never had to wait for a table. No other place can compare. There's so many strange things about this place, but as you should not judge a book by its cover so should you not judge Anarkali by its close proximity to the dollar store, it's strange plastic grass wall, or it's very affordable price range.
