I was on vacation to a new place under the care of a host who was not a breakfast eater. I am an early riser and don't change my sleep/wake schedule for vacations. So, at 5:00 am I was on the look out for some place to eat. Key West isn't noted for early opening times. Ana's Cuban Café was open for service by 7:00. It gave me time to walk leisurely around the neighborhood before finding the shop. It is attached to a small grocery market. The menu met with my needs as I wanted authentic Cuban food. I ordered the Especial Cubano which was rice and black beans, eggs served up as you like them (as long as they are cooked on a grill/griddle). I added coffee made with hot milk and a side of plantains. There are picnic tables that were not crowded when I was there. I noted that people had ordered things that I didn't see on the menu (French toast, for example). The bread is what I like. I would strongly recommend an al fresco breakfast at this establishment. Afterwards, you can stroll along the neighborhood, look at the Gulf, and check out a marker that indicates that you are only 90 miles from Cuba! read more

Anyway, like I said Ana's window wasn't open and the ladies in the grocery said they were supposed to be open at 730am and it was passed 8am and still nothing. With that being said we decided to get a Cuban sandwich for breakfast at the grocery next door. We didn't need to worry about parking because it was walking distance from our hotel and if you are staying at the Casa Marina or Southernmost Resort then you can walk too. If not there is a place to park down to the left which is paid parking. Parking shouldn't be an issue because the island doesn't seem to be completely awake until after 9am lol. I had the Cuban sandwich with cafe con leche. The ladies were quick to make my sandwich. The sandwich itself was delicious! The pork was very flavorful and juicy. This review is strictly about the coffee-- My wife gets at least 4 of them when we come to town for our week long trip and always one right before we leave town. She says this is the best café con leche in town. They do have a good menu, but we have never ordered food here. Why the 4 stars? You can almost always guarantee you will need to wait in line to place your order. Not only that, but there isn't much urgency for them to serve you coffee. A lot of restaurants in Key West are expensive tourist traps, especially near Duval Street. Ana's Cuban Cafe, however, is NOT. It's a little hole in the wall walk-up counter with just three people running the place, but they're excellent at what they do. That's proven by the line, which was half way down the block by the time we got there (at 9:30 am). If you need ANY type of Cuban coffee to start your day - colada, cafe con leche, even American coffee - this is the place to get it. They also have a full menu with other breakfast and lunch dishes. After spending some time on the beach near Southernmost point, we wanted something quick and delicious for lunch, and Ana's hit the spot. My hubs and I both went with the authentic Cuban sandwich...it was large enough that we probably could have easily shared.
