Someone once told me that if you are far from home and you are looking for somewhere to eat and you find a Thai restaurant, you should go - and trust that it will be good. In any tiny town on the globe where you wouldn't expect it. This has served as a culinary compass for me anytime we are traveling and looking for something tasty - and it hasn't let me down yet. When we found Anchor Bay Thai Kitchen in the very tiny town of Anchor Bay (just north of Gualala), we gave it a try and ordered takeout. I'm so glad that we did. This Thai food - everything we ordered - was STELLAR. We spent over $100 on dinner and it was worth every penny. We ordered the the spring rolls with tofu (fresh rice paper rolls), deep fried prawns, crispy fried tofu, Som Tum salad with fresh green papaya, shrimp, peanuts, green beans and tomato in a lime dressing with fish sauce, Pad Thai, green curry with chicken, duck curry (red curry) and an order of white rice and of brown rice. It was a feast! Kids particularly love the Pad Thai and thank goodness I ordered two orders because they went through the first very quickly. So often Pad Thai is padded out with bean sprouts so you don't end up getting many noodles. This was the first restaurant experience where the quantity of noodles matched my kids' appetites and flavor profile was delicious - complex and traditional and everything you want from Pad Thai. It makes me emotional thinking about it! The green curry that I had was loaded with chicken and great vegetables - NORMAL THAI VEGETABLES like eggplant, green beans, bell peppers (sometimes restaurants get weird here and throw in things like carrots. But not here). And the brown rice was nutty and had a great bite to it. I am all about this dish. We should have ordered more than deep fried prawns because that was my favorite appetizer from all of the appetizers. Service at pick up was friendly and they double checked the order with me to make sure they didn't forget anything (which was really nice and something that doesn't always happen). They close at 7 pm so make sure you order before then - also they are closed on Mondays. Parking is easy - right in front. read more

Had the pineapple fried rice. It was lacking flavor. Also had the beef pad thai. Beef pad thai was decent I got the level 4 out of 5 on the heat scale. Was not hot at all. Stopped in here last weekend while visiting the small coastal town of Gualala. They were busy! We arrived shortly before 7 and were told there was a 30 minute wait, no biggie, we put our name on the list and explored around. The convenience shop next door was getting ready to close but we were able to snag some drinks before so. We wandered around the area, there's a bench across the street you can look at the water from. When we were finally seated it did take some time to be helped/order/receive the food/etc. but none of that was a nuisance as the staff was very transparent with how busy they were and still in good spirits. What we ordered: -Fresh spring rolls (they were out of the tofu so they subbed avocado). These were good, nothing stand out about them... the sauce they're served with is Gluten Free -Pad See Ew with tofu. This was phenomenal. I asked about the spice level and was told it comes mild, there was no spice to it at all and if I'm back in the area I would request it medium. -Pad Thai with tofu. This was gluten free and good. I'm not a huge pad Thai fan but the tasting I had was enjoyable. -Salmon Fried Rice. This was a special and we ordered it because they were out of the Pan Eggplant we originally wanted. There weren't many places open for dinner past 6pm during Fourth of July weekend, and we were glad to have been directed to this restaurant- which was due to close at 7pm. You would never expect a beautiful little tucked away paradise to enjoy Thai food. The kids had pad Thai and pad see ew. The hubby had Pra Kram with prawns and I had the green curry with tofu. The vegetables were fresh, the protein was perfectly cooked, the atmosphere and the service were fantastic. It was an unexpected spot to find in a remote part of the coast. Tends to be a bit spicy. Service is great and food is reasonable. Nice atmosphere for dining. A better place to eat in the gualala area.

Delicious meal out, very satisfying on a cool, rainy day. Two of us: Ordered the Pad Thai with tofu, Teriyaki chicken (sauce on side so I could avoid gluten), and the Red curry with tofu. Plus a thai iced tea. All as expected and, while not the best ever, was wonderfully tasty, served promptly, with kind, professional service. Small town. I other Asian food but this was delish! Service slow and just as you were starting to wonder where the wait or was he would appear. The pod Thai was somewhat thin and vinegary not the best but the pumpkin curry with chicken was fantastic- warmly spiced and plentiful and the brown rice also excellent. read more

This has been our second getaway visit to Gualala. One of the highlights of this visit will have been my wife's birthday dinner earlier tonight at Anchor Bay Thai. We have enjoyed a good amount of quality Thai food in many locations over the years, but this place ranks at the top. Our lovely server Tina shared with us that the chef/owner is from a Thai family of chefs and restauranteurs. She (Kwanchai) trained in Singapore and Bangkok and cooked in a few prestigious restaurants along the way. All of their fresh herbs and spices are imported directly from Thailand, which definitively shows favorably in their dishes. One of the main course specials was a cashew tempura deep fried prawn with a supporting medley of lightly charred mushrooms, cashews, and onions. It was likely the best main course Thai dish that we have eaten. Surviving in such a uniquely ethnic food business in this beautiful, low traffic location for more than a decade (through the pandemic and recession) speaks for itself. Unexpectedly discovering a Thai restaurant of such high quality in this location simply added to the top shelf experience the restaurant offered us. read more

We called from our nearby hotel to make sure the place was open. Person on the phone was very polite and confirmed the restaurant was open and it's hours of operation. Food was delicious! Spending the night in the area. Tried to call to place a to go order but their phone was not picking up. We later learned that they were having phone trouble, so that was not their fault. We ordered two pad-sea-ew with chicken. It was a good amount of food. Lot of noodles, good amount of chicken, but lacking on the broccoli and other vegetables. Price was around $15 per entree after they added a $1 per entree surcharge for supply constrains. I thought that was a little tacky. If you are going to raise the prices just raise the price in the menu, or at least provide that information online someplace. Overall I thought it was a good takeout meal that was ready in 20 minutes. read more

Amazed at how perfect the flavors were. The Tom Yum Soup, Fresh Spring Roll with Tofu, Pork Pad Ke-Mow, Kao Pad Gra Praw - all 10/10. I was so excited to try this spot because I was craving Thai food really bad and this place delivered and really exceptionally. Fantastic service! Fantastic flavors! Zero disappointments. Honestly we love Thai cuisine and we're often out here and we're so excited to try. Sadly, it may go down as one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. We had Tom Kha Gai, curry and a few other dishes and none of them - and this is weird - none had any flavor. We couldn't tell one dish from the other. Bland, flavorless, unappealing, etc. it was the oddest and least appetizing food we've had out in awhile. Last time we tried it was slightly better, but still not worth the money. I know it's so exciting to have a great a Thai kitchen here in tiny Anchor Bay, but I won't be trying this again - for the money it's been a disappointment every time. read more

If you have never had Thai food before and appreciate food with very little seasoning, this restaurant is calling your name. We ordered two dishes: 1. Drunken noodles with salmon. Noodles were bland and were sticking together as if they were just recently pulled from the packaging. The salmon was clearly defrosted. All this is fine, but the order costs $27. This is a staple dish and they completely missed the mark. 2. Crispy cashew prawns. A daily special that is extremely greasy. The fried dough is very thick. The shrimp had zero seasoning. This dish is $28. The total for two dishes came out to around $62 with the tip. It was a busy time and we had pretty high expectations given the stellar reviews. read more

Highly recommended by the owner of the house we are renting, we had to try this place and are glad we did. We got the seafood green curry and basil stir fry with tofu and loved them both (we got medium, which was on the spicy side for medium but I loved it). We also got the crispy prawns appetizer which was fine but I'd skip them next time. Btw the rice is extra (thanks yelpers for the heads up about that) and we got the brown rice, which was really good. Overall it was a pricy meal but healthy and tasty. read more

This restaurant came recommended and while the service was on point and the meals were delivered in a timely manner I found our chow mein and fried rice to be subpar. The offerings were bland, the noodles and vegetables were overcooked and the rice was mushy. It's possible we caught them on a bad night though for the price and considering the quality of what we received, we will probably not return. read more

Called in a phone order, was placed on hold for 10 minutes. Finally ordered the food and specifically requested no peanuts or bell peppers due to a family members food allergies. Pick up the over priced food and get home. Every dish had peanuts on it as well as bell peppers. I don't understand how that could have slipped their minds when I specifically told them someone was allergic. read more

Absolutely delicious! Outdoor seating was very nice, service was great, and the food was some of the best Thai food I've ever had. Didn't have to wait too long for the food. I am normally reluctant to give a place five stars unless it really blows me away, and Anchor Bay Thai Kitchen really blew me away. First of all, finding even decent Thai food in a small town is problematic enough, but finding really good Thai food that's actually spicy is simply astounding. I asked them to make the food Thai spicy, and while I can't attest to what you might get in Thailand, I can say that it spicier than most Thai restaurants will serve to white people. Basic spicy clears your sinuses; Thai spicy helps you see God, and God was definitely sighted after this meal. The pad see yew was particularly memorable for having an extra kick but also retaining a broad flavor palette, while the pad prik khing was slightly less spicy but no less delicious. Next time I come back to Gualala or the environs, I'm definitely stopping here again! read more
