Our flight was delayed, so we didn't arrive until 4 a.m., but the staff was suuuper welcoming, and we were able to rest comfortably for the remainder of the morning! Breakfast was an extra-special treat because they had multiple gluten-free options AND gluten-free toast!! (It was a shared toaster, but since I'm not celiac, it was a welcomed gift!) We were able to catch our bus to Seward without a hitch, and the saloon (off the lobby) where we waited and enjoyed breakfast was absolutely magical! There was so much history to take in, and it was such a fun way to experience a little piece of Anchorage's past. The location was also great--close to all the touristy fun and gift shops! Not only had they lost their liquor license so their restaurant /bar was shut down. Their front desk manager when we checked in gave us totally false information about early morning transportation to the train to Seward. Our room did not have A/c, and I suppose in winter it doesn't matter. Do not stay here! If I could give no stars or black stars that's more accurate. read more

What a delight! Right from the start of our stay and throughout the whole time, all of the staff members were amazing ~ helpful, smiling, and accessible. From the lobby to the room, the hotel is sparkling clean. The building is historic and the past comes alive with photos retelling stories of the Anchorage of old, and gorgeous paintings that capture the shifting light with remarkable beauty. The Historic Anchorage Hotel is an adorable and refreshing boutique hotel experience, very classy and designed with care down to the smallest detail, and with so much in walking distance. The best gift store with the most interesting curiosities in all of Anchorage is also right next door, with snacks and great Alaska-made finds. This is a beautiful historic hotel filled with mementos of the last century. There are photos of the hotel from the early 1900's and its on the historic register. It's within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants with a walkable public art tour featuring artists like Robert Wyland and Hunter S Thompson. The entire staff is friendly and helpful and the manager, Terry, spent lots of time telling me about the 26 room hotel and the haunted history. She showed me her video of a chandelier with just a few of the crystals vibrating inexplicably and told us that some ghost hunters had told them there were 32 separate entities inhabiting the hotel. I didn't see anything strange but I love the stories. There's a basic fitness room and a beautiful bar area (but no liquor license) where the breakfast buffet is served. The breakfast is small but adequate with the star being the pancake machine that looks like a copy machine but spits out thin pancakes when you push the button. There was no fruit available but they do have water, coffee and tea available all day. The room was comfortable with the old timey vibe. The updates include a power strip with USB ports, a coffee maker (and tea provided) and a large flat screen TV. There's no air conditioning but the floor fan works well enough. We chose this hotel to be within walking distance of the train station and the train rolls in at 5:20am - blasting it's whistle for about a full minute. It leaves again at 6:45am but the whistle is shorter. I was exhausted and fell back to sleep quickly so it wasn't really a problem for me. The huge gift shop next store offers hotel guest 10% off and they have everything you could want. I would definitely recommend this very clean and comfortable, unique hotel with its attentive staff. read more

We decided to stay here after our expedition cruise of the inside passage. It was way more expensive than any hotel we have ever picked...but all the hotels in anchorage are priced that high. We wanted a downtown hotel with character and that's what we got. The delightful front desk clerk was new but ever so helpful in her directions to the hip Quantum Laundry and Whiskey & Ramen. The room was really clean and well appointed. We enjoyed the historic vibe- the funky tub, the big windows, the hallway photos and the antique lobby bar. After a week of Alaskan Dream Cruise meals, the breakfast was a little disappointing but it gave us an excuse to find a local coffee shop. We are really glad we stayed at this hotel. read more

The Historic Anchorage Hotel is a pretty cool place. It really does a nice job of balancing historic charm with modern updates. Parking is a bit of a challenge, the coho lot is a lot a half block away. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. The one downside I experienced was the lack of air conditioning. I left my windows open to get a cool breeze and that helped a lot. The breakfasts are in the historic bar and they are pretty simple. Premade cheese omelettes, pancakes, sausage, and potatoes. The coffee is fresh tasting and is available all day long. The hotel exudes history, and if you are lucky you might even get to meet one of the spirits that resides here. A special thanks to the staff who were helpful and always had a great attitude! This was a great place to spend my nights in Anchorage! read more

This hotel is exactly as is states. Historic. Everything is in bad shape, stinks, carpet stains, no air conditioning, no screens on windows so you can't open to cool down, homeless camps all around the area. This is a terrible downtown hotel. Very over priced for what you get. We have been all the way to Fairbanks and back and have stayed in a lot of small towns that had much better accommodation than this hotel has. We were very disappointed. Also asked for refund before we stayed and they have a seven day cancellation policy. So we could not move to another location without loosing are money. They should be very ashamed. read more

We had our travel agent reserve 2 king suites, one room had a couch, coffee table and end chair...the other just a chair in a corner away from the tv. We had to sit on the bed the whole time. The heat is a boiler, which was not turned on yet. No circulation of air, felt like I was suffocating. It was in desperate need of a refresh. The worst hotel experience I have ever had. And there are homeless drug addicts on the street! Go to the Hilton! read more

This hotel has a lot of history. The structure and ambiance has the feel of a time lost. They give you an actual key(no key cards). The staff was super! There professionalism was a work of art, in fact I wanted them to relax a little. My room was excellent. I rented the Laurance Suit. It was a decent size with a living room. The bathroom was true to the traditional size of the early 20's, small. I wish the fridge was bigger too. But it served its purpose. My biggest negative was the amount of space under my front door.i put a towel there at night. This was a great hotel.....it reminded me of the the Shinnings hotel lol. The place is charming, the staff friendly, the location, ideal. The room is sufficient, charming, "historic". I would definitely stay here again to get that type of "experience" and feel...better than a chain hotel. All that said, it was perfect for me for a one night business trip. Maybe suitable for a couple or small family for a night or 2, beyond that, you may want more appealing amenities. Tiny room 308. Cozy. No view. Quiet. No thermostat in the room. Quaint and clean. Flatscreen TV, coffee maker, hairdryer, standing fan. Polyfill pillows, extra blanket if you need it. Staff was very nice at check-in, even helped me to my room since I didn't have enough arms to haul all the luggage I brought. Window opens. That's always a plus. If you're used to a big chain hotel, you might miss having a microwave and refrigerator, a big bathroom counter, a curved shower curtain rod... But I thought it was just fine as a place to lay my head after a day of playing and exploring outside. Breakfast is modest. Waffle maker, oats, tea, hard boiled eggs that seemed a little off, bagels, coffee. It's served in the bar adjacent to the registration desk, a room I felt was alittle dark for morning. Then again, it was December in Anchorage -- not much daylight there then. Loved the spirit of the lobby, all done up with a big Christmas tree and presents and lights. Life can get lonely on the road for musicians -- it's easy to fall out of the flow as you're traveling from here to there -- but the decor definitely helped put me in the holiday spirit. Plus, the location was really great. Any time you're within walking distance of Snow City Cafe you're stylin'. Would stay here again. read more

I really don't know what to make of this place. The lobby is pretty, and the staff is very nice. It was listed in the guide book, and others seem to love it. But, the day we arrived, our room was about 500 degrees. Thankfully, it cooled off at night and with a fan and the windows open it was reasonably comfortable. Of course, with the open windows, we could hear all the loud, drug-fueled fighting going on in the sketchy park directly across the street...I should've known something was afoot when I noticed the white noise machine. The room above us sounded like it was full of elephants, and someone else sure likes music, because I heard it start at 7:30a and continue about all day. There was a nice ice machine and a vending machine which, alas, took only dollars, but that didn't really matter anyway because all it held was soda (no water). There was so much noise and so many people hanging about in the hallway that I thought we might have stumbled into a bordello. Oh, and as far as the reputation of the hotel being haunted goes, all I can tell you is that I'm pretty sure that my husband had a paranormal experience (although he will only call it weird and unexplainable). And one window kept popping itself open. Grateful that we're only here one night. read more

The hotel was in a great location, the bed was super-comfortable, the rooms were nice and clean and smelled great, and the staff was so friendly and helpful. Oh and they're sticklers for making sure the guests are quite so that everyone gets restful sleep, which was great. Kari was one of the concierges and she was really cool and suggested so many places for me to visit based on my likes. She was right on the money too. My stay here couldn't have been more pleasant. Room 302 was large with couch, big chairs, 2 very comfortable queen beds and pillows. Clean room, nice views, plenty of light. Nice towels. Included breakfast was ok. Nothing fancy and the coffee very weak. Overall we really felt very comfortable, enjoyed this hotel and we'll be back. read more

My friends and I stayed 2 nights at this lovely hotel in October. The front desk staff was friendly, helpful and attentive. We had a corner room (room 302) with 2 beds separated by a wall; perfect for me and my married-couple friends. The area was quiet and safe and we could walk to all the nearby downtown attractions. Morning breakfasts (included with stay) include fresh-made waffles, hard-boiled eggs, grapefruit (surprisingly tasty), cereal, bagels/cream cheese, coffee and juice. MUCH more extensive than I expected and quite delicious! Highly recommended if you're staying in the area. read more

This is a nice, clean hotel in a good location downtown. I don't see much 'historic' about it...but it is a little less anonoymous than the Hilton next door. An while the people change every year they are unfailingly nice and welcoming. I've never stayed longer than one night while passing through to the bush, but this hotel gets the job done. read more

Great hotel! Great location! We tend to choose small local hotels vs the big box options when traveling. The Historic Anchorage Hotel fit the bill! The hotel is 3 stories and has 26 rooms. The rooms are clean and nicely appointed. The staff all very friendly and welcoming. The included breakfast a welcome bonus. I later found out the hotel is haunted and there has been a lot of paranormal activity there. We unfortunately didn't experience any sightings... The hotel is conveniently located in downtown Anchorage within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. On the weekends there is an open market a block away where you can get Alaskan crafts, photos, and food items. There isn't on-site parking, but you can get a voucher for a lot a couple of blocks away for 10 bucks a day. We parked for free on the street and put money in the meter at 9:00am. Stayed at the Historic Anchorage Hotel three separate times in the summer of 2014. The staff is super friendly; rolls out the baggage cart when you arrive and they are willing (and eager) to help you get your luggage inside. I found it a bit disconcerting that the front desk help was the same person who would gladly help you to your room or even address maintenance issues (who's manning the desk?) but I never saw anyone waiting so perhaps its small enough of an inn that this system works. The hotel is older but well maintained and has a lot of character. This hotel offers a much more unique experience than the chain hotels in downtown. You can't beat the location; this is where you want to be in downtown Anchorage! The breakfast is good and served in what appears to be and vintage saloon. Fresh waffles, bagels, fruit, yogurt, cereals, and a full assortment of beverages; you can satisfy your morning appetite here. Every time I had breakfast, I saw the manger circle through at least twice checking that all was clean and well stocked. He was very conscientious. My only critique (if management reads) this would be, please install towel racks in the bathroom so that I can hang my towel up and help you save on laundry costs on a multi-day stay. Our stay here was great. We arrived a day early than we had booked our stay for. But the staff (Terry) quickly "rearranged" rooms so that we had a large, corner room. The only downside to being that the room was on the front of the hotel. And when the local bars close at 2 or 3 in the morning, the noise is impossible to ignore. We arrived with no prearranged plans and the front desk was very helpful in setting us up with places to eat, drink, and visit. The Great Alaskan Beer and Barleywine Festival was taking place and Terry again got us all the info we needed to get tickets. It definitely does has a historic feel with lots of Alaskan flavor. The old bar area where breakfast is served could easily have looked the same 90 years ago. There is a fireplace in the lobby with chairs and a chess table. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The beds were comfortable and the shower was hot. And the Wi-Fi is now free. This hotel is a great place to stay if you plan on basing your visit to Anchorage in downtown. read more

The price is way to high for what you get. As soon as I walked through the door I realized I had made a mistake. The room was large however very old. The whole place needs a major remodeling. For the condition of the rooms prices should be more around $80. Also no AC. I wish I had stayed at the Hilton next door. read more

I seriously can't believe this place has such good reviews. The room was filthy and worn down. The chairs were dark brown from people sweating on them and the ironing board and carpet had large stains (seriously, why would I want to put my clothes on a disgusting ironing board?). The room was much smaller than pictured online and the wifi didn't work. As this was a business trip, I was not very happy about. On the positives, the gal at the front desk was very nice and seemed nonplussed about me checking out so quickly. read more

I was really impressed with this hotel. The desk clerk at check in was very friendly and helpful, as was the night shift desk clerk. I liked the guest room better than the one I stayed in at hotel del Coronado. The room was very clean except for a sock left behind a chair by a previous guest. The free continental breakfast was good and the hours for breakfast were good as well. The only thing I was disappointed with was the morning of check out. The desk clerk called the room 15 minutes before check out and rudely reminded me the check out time. Immediately after hanging up the phone, the maid was knocking on the door. when we turned in our keys, 5 minutes before check out, the desk clerk again was very rude. We were really disappointed, as the hotel website is misleading. We were put there as part of a cruise, so we decided to stay there while we were in and out of Anchorage. So we were there 3 separate times. The pros: The rooms were large and clean. The cons: The layout of the rooms were long and narrow, with the bed at one end and the tv at the opposite end (with a sitting area in between), so the tv was really far away from the bed. The bathroom was very small with no counter space at all, and there was maybe 3 inches from the toilet to the wall. Also, the website shows pictures of this gorgeous bar. Which is only used for eating breakfast, as they lost their liquor license. Our view 2/3 times we were there was out the back, and our view was rooftops and garbage on the ground. And the staff at the front desk was either not available or particularly unhelpful. Not rude or anything, just couldn't answer questions about the area. I guess my main complaint is that the website is completely inaccurate. read more

Wonderful hotel. I booked three rooms for my family and each room was quite large, with living room areas, clean and tastefully appointed. The location was excellent; we needed to get to the train station early in the morning and we simply walked. The beds were comfortable and everyone slept well. The front desk people were helpful and engaged (something I have learned not to expect in Alaska). This hotel was about par. The room had good size and the bed was comfortable. They gave us the handicap room though and it smelled like an old folks home. It even had the stool for the bathtub. I had reserved a junior suite but it did not look like the pictures. All of the pictures I had seen shown a sofa in the room. All our room had for seating was a sitting chair and an office chair. The view from our room was a concrete wall. The pricing seems to be high for the quality of room. When walking around the room you can feel a lot of soft spots in the floor. read more

This is such an adorable hotel! It is very clean, and it was neat to stay at a historical hotel. Terry was so polite and hospitable, as were the rest of the staff members. They have the blackout curtains if you are not a fan of the 24 hour light. I personally thought it was neat and didn't use the curtains. I loved having a refrigerator in my room to chill my waters and fruit. It is in a great area downtown and within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. Beds are comfy, rooms are clean, service is good. The Fur Rondy festival is on, and it takes place right outside the hotel. I was happy with my stay. This place was perfect for what we were looking for. We had one night and wanted to do some souvenir shopping, grab a good dinner and hit the bars. This hotel was in the perfect location for all that within an easy walk. Also the weekend farmers market is right across the corner which was neat - I got some neat handmade carvings from one of the artisans there which I otherwise would've never found. The room we had was very spacious with a couch and mini kitchenette area, and it was a standard room. Some people have complained about the noise from the bar caddy corner to the hotel. This bar was hopping late night while we were on the way home, but we got lucky and got a room in the back so it wasn't an issue at all even though we slept with windows open. Overall we really liked it. For a small historic hotel where you don't expect a pool, large fitness center or other luxury amenities, this place is almost as good as it gets. read more

Tourist rip-off! The website paints a beautiful picture of the hotel and the reviews are glowing. The picture of the room looks as it was taken back in 2012 & the reviews from 2012 or 2013. The hotel is old not charming. My room was run down, in need of paint, carpet, new windows (noise canceling) and air conditioning. My room was very small and at the front of the hotel, and across the street was loud music (another tourist trap) so I had to keep the window shut (my husband still wore ear plugs) and we used the stand alone fan that was in the room. The price was high for the room conditions and the breakfast was the same old dreary oatmeal and waffles. Thank goodness we only had one night there. The hotel was in walking distance of the Alaska RR, however there looks to be nicer hotels closer to the train station. read more

Was I disappointed with this place upon my first arrival in Alaska. Reservation was made about a year ahead for a busy August period; I was given 3rd floor room upon late arrival from the airport on a Thursday night. By mid day after a trolley tour of mid-town Anchorage I returned to be told I had to move. Really? I already had weathered the early morning time change with a plugged up toilet-the young lady had to come upstairs with the plunger. Now she had to help me with a cart, schlepping all my personals, clothing and knapsack onto the elevator downstairs with a choice over the street or a quieter room that wasn't available yet past the 11 am check out time. Curses. I felt really demeaned by the manager's decision that my occupancy was only for handicapped with two bathroom handrails at best...I tried to bury the hatchet with her; she was just doing her job but the customer really didn't matter much. I lost a lens brush and a nail clipper in the fiasco. Later in the week of a 9 night stay I asked to move AGAIN at 10pm for dropping impact noises above on my ceiling, wonderful for sleeping in this otherwise stately old Victorian era 1900s hotel. They were flippant & contrary regarding my observation that room number two floor TILTED, I rolled left in bed and could feel the drop walking downhill to the door, rather unique & remarkable for a property remodeled in 1989 after the '64 quake. Oh well I didn't return after Denali-I took a taxi directly to the airport for an earlier flight. I did tip the Serbian woman in the breakfast room (old bar) and gave the night clerk my left over whiskey bottle for the second move! read more
