I have ordered from Ancient Ginger several times. Tonight I ordered chicken noodle soup that tasted like it came from a bouillon cube with soggy spaghetti and waterlogged chicken pieces. Next I had the overcooked pork ****** finally I had the Happy Family that had tough gigantic pieces of gristled pork very tough shrimp and chicken that must have been cooking for days. Surprisingly, the beef was very tender and tasty. The rice tasted like Minute Rice. On the positive side, they included 2 fortune cookies, one chocolate. I have been underwhelmed with the Chinese takeout choice selections near me. Decided to give this place a try, and I have to say, it is definitely a contender. We got the bean curd with 8 precious, which is essentially braised bean with shrimp, chicken, beef, pork and mixed vegetable in oyster sauce. My son got his usual chicken with broccoli and we also got shrimp rice noodle dish. What I really liked about this place is that they are not skimpy with sauce and it doesn't overpower the food itself. My only complaint is I wish the shrimp rice noodle dish is a lot hotter temperature wise. It was bit cold while the other dishes were hot. The decor inside is very quaint and maybe one day, we will eat in there. But based off this takeout order, I am a fan for sure. read more

My go to place for some good chinese food. If it was closer to my home i would go a lot more but it is definitely closer than queens and Manhattan! Ive been eating there for years. We usually always get the pineapple fried rice. This time we decided to get the Emperors pork and beef with eggplant and garlic sauce. Everything tasted great. I've wanted to go to a sit down Chinese restaurant for weeks and happened upon Ancient Ginger with my dad. We went in for lunch the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the place was surprisingly empty for 1pm. A.G. offers everything you want from a Chinese restaurant. Hot tea served immediately once you're seated. A large menu with all the Chinese favorites and a back page of lunch specials. I tried the chicken and garlic eggplant with brown rice lunch special. It was delish! Stole a bite of my dad's General Tso's which was also very good - good chunks of chicken and not just all breading. Served with your choice of soup, the portion was just right for a filling lunch. Regular entrees are $9-14ish whereas lunch specials are in the $10 ball park. Chopsticks, beer, and wine all available. Your meal rounds out with orange or pineapple wedges and a fortune cookie. Servers keep an eye on the table checking in, but don't haunt you which I really appreciate in a restaurant. Next time I'm visiting Long Island and want Chinese, I'll definitely remember Ancient Ginger. read more

Always a delicious inexpensive meal. We came on a Saturday night with seven people and walked right in and were seated immediately. We had a nice table in the back corner with a wooden privacy screen. The table had a lazy Susan in the middle which is a nice touch for large groups sharing a meal. They came out right away with the crunchy noodles, duck sauce and hot mustard, yum. They refilled when empty. Most of us got the combination dishes with the exception of two. Overall, they were greasy and just lacking all around. - Fried Pork Dumplings: we both agreed were quite good but a little heavy duty. - Chicken and Broccoli: my dish. Although not as good as Dragon I'll take it. I usually stick to my basics when I get Chinese.. I'm not going to lie. I think next time if I come back I'll have it again but get Hot & Sour soup because that's one of my favorites! - Four Precious Jewels: my friend ordered this and he said it was good. This is my go-to spot if I am in the mood for Chinese food. I usually get some of the more common dishes like chicken & broccoli, general tso's, sesame chicken, veggie fried rice, or veggie lo-mein. I like their food because I find that it's lighter and less greasy than other typical Chinese places on Long Island. They're not as heavy on the sauces, and perhaps that makes the food not as flavorful for some people but personally I wish all Chinese places prepared their food like this. I have only dined in at Ancient Ginger so I can't comment on the delivery or take-out experience, but I have never been disappointed here. The food is good here, we usually come to St James when we want to try something other than Eastern Pavilion in Stony Brook. The sesame chicken is pretty good as well as the orange flavored beef. Low lighting and soft music. Ended up going on a weekday so it wasn't very crowded which is perfectly fine with me! Haha The menu is quite large actually and they have your traditional Chinese food plates along with their own speciality plates, and very affordable might I add. 0 stars. I am full blown Celiac. I have gone to Ancient Ginger numerous times over the last year and ordered the exact same thing each time asking for it to be Gluten free. No problems. This past Thursday I ordered and once again began with I need 2 gluten free meals. From there the guy rushed me through the order in fact he hung up before I was done. The meal was 100% NOT gluten free. Since being diagnosed I've had Gluten 3 times and get violently ill. This was by FAR the worst. For 3 hours my stomach was turned inside out.
