DJs is a clam shack and that's exactly what it is. When you get there you'll see the Food Truck that started it and when you get into the dining room you'll sort of feel like you're at the beach getting some seafood for lunch or dinner. The good news is that it is clean and usually pretty quiet. It's standard service, you order at the counter and wait for them to bring you the food at a table. It's a bit pricey but the food is quality and very tasty. I particularly love their Clam Chowder, I'm partial to New England but they also serve Manhattan. Sometimes I just drop in for the soup. They serve hot and cold lobster rolls which can get up there in "market price" but they give you a good amount of lobster on a really tasty bun. I'd suggest it if you're nearby and looking for some tasty seafood on a whim. read more

Such a cute restaurant, with ample seating inside and outdoors. The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful with giving me advice as to what to order with the lobster roll the bisque and hotdog & chicken tenders with fries for the kids. We tried it after the beach and it was great. Very simple place, you walk in and order. The manager and young lady worker moved fast, didn't see them stop ever. Wife and I both had the shrimp scampi roll and clam chowder. Both are excellent. The clam chowder is very thick, almost like mashed potatoes which I was at first surprised by. The shrimp scampi roll is just some cooked shrimp in a hot dog bun but man did it have flavor. I actually dipped it in the clam chowder at one point. So this has become a summer thing for me..every year, come for a hot lobster roll. I live a good distance away. It is absolutely worth the drive. This place is all about good food. Its a small, super casual dine in area of booths, and theres a few picnic tables outside. Order at counter, they bring food to you. If you read my original review..I took my own advice and had sweet potato fries. The maple dipping sauce that comes with them is amazing! But that's the supporting role, not the star. The hot lobster roll is ridiculous! Lobster so sweet, tender, and perfectly buttered. The toasted roll is comes on soaks up the butter in such a way that it holds together well. No exaggeration, I was moaning it was so good! Glad i opted to eat outside, i was alone. This place is just consistently solid. And $25 price point is more than fair. Stopped by at around 4 PM on a Wednesday afternoon and they were actually open and taking customers! A woman was placing her order and I was waiting looking at the menu. Then I happen to glance in the back at the girl working the deep fryer, just happen to look at the exact moment that she taps the fryer spoon right up against the edge of the garbage can so it literally comes in contact with the black garbage bag. Then I see her proceed to stick the big spoon that just touched the black garbage bag back into the deep fryer and start stirring fries around. This is a favorite stop of mine whenever I'm in the hood. Their hot lobster rolls are one of the best items on the menu. Regular size is plenty but if you've got an appetite or love to share, then try the the XL and share it. It's quite a sandwich! So much meat, both claw meat and then some. The roll is all about the bread as well. It's so buttery! I also recommend the lobster bisque - this is not a heavy cream based one. It's a little on the salty side, has lobster pieces in it and it's really good. My family likes the New England style clam chowder better as that's full of ingredients. I've not had it yet but I'm sure it's delicious as well. Each time I come by, I wish I could dine in as I'm aiming to try the clams. One of these days... It was delicious and I really like the pickled red onions throughout. As far as I know, the price has held steady at $14 for a few years which I appreciate in this economy. The fish and chips was delicious as well. The portion was very generous: 4 large pieces with a light batter, which I was able to stretch to 3 meals. I appreciated the lemon wedges, the malt vinegar and ketchup packets, and that they cut a hole in the top of the to-go container, so "it would not get soggy ". The dining room is always clean and has a great nautical vibe. I usually read the local newspaper while I wait (about ten minutes, tops). read more

The credit card machine had a default tip of 20% set when device was presented to me. Worse yet, that 20% was added to the total before I even did anything. If I hadn't been paying attention I would have been ripped off. What a cutsie hidden gem at the end of Nichols road, cold lobster roll was so good. Generous with the lobster, the bun was toasted perfectly in butter. It comes with a small serving of Cole slaw and that was also so good and fresh. Never knew this was here and literally 3 miles away! I am basing this review off my experience with the food truck that listed this location as their primary location. The food truck was stationed at a holiday market in St. James where I attended with my family to do some cute holiday shopping at my nephew's school. I was so excited to see this food truck, because I haven't had DJ's clam shack in a very long time. I've only been to the Wantagh location, and the last time I was there was right before COVID. Since then, we moved around quite a bit and far away from this location as well as its other locations. But what I remember very well was loving the shrimp scampi roll that they have on their menu . When I ran up to the truck, sure enough I saw this featured and I couldn't help but jump at the chance to order it again after so many years. The guy that took my order was so friendly, so nice, and was very gracious when I kept on saying how good their food was. After about 5 to 10 minutes, I grabbed my roll. It was a bit chilly out and we were pretty much done shopping so we went to the car to eat the various food items that we purchased including my shrimp roll. It was just as delicious as I remember and on such a cold night, it was a great eat. The shrimp scampi was done perfectly with medium/sized shrimp, huge chunks of garlic, which is how I like it, with a roll was that was so buttery and delicious. This was a huge treat for me. It helped me get into the holiday season as I celebrate feast of the seven fishes for Christmas Eve. It might want me to make a stop on another trip to Long Island for more fish from DJ's clam shack this season. read more

Really surprised, the place has an excellent rep. Ordered 2 fish & chips, an order of calamari and a new england clam chowder for take home. Chowder was good, both orders of fish were extremely soft to the point of soupy, though not smelly. Most likely the fish was frozen and defrosted 2 or 3 times. The calamari was fine, but barely one handful and a full $14. Nice people inside, but I won't be back. Passed by this clam shack and since it was around lunch time we decided to take a break. Ordered the lobster roll (with fries) and the clams with jalapeños with the lovely and friendly cashier. It's a cozy place with a few tables/chairs, since it was still early we were able to find a table right away. While wanting for our food, we got to check out the shack. Didn't realize it was featured in Guy's DDD show! Cashier brought out the food to our table - the toasted bread was yummy, perfectly complemented the lobster! We ordered the fish and chips and the whole belly clam baskets. They came with tartar sauce and slaw and fries on the side. Overall, the batters were good and crispy, but I wish they were slightly lighter on the fish and had more flavor. We did request lemons and I also added some extra salt to mine. This place is take out with a small sit in area, so service is a bit slower for sit in, but our host was really nice. She was young, asked if we needed anything a couple times, and was explaining menu items well. It was a bit odd when we first came in because there was a man in the kitchen who saw us and made eye contact several times when we had walked in but didn't take our order or say anything to acknowledge we were there (like if he just said "I'll be right with you" or "Hi, welcome" that would be nice). He did for all the other customers who came through so it felt off. Otherwise food was good and the you could taste the freshness. I would perhaps try it another time. read more

I think Guy Fieri and I are in agreement: these are some excellent lobster rolls this side of Flavortown! Came here for a quick lunch on a weekday and was surprised to see an already packed parking lot. I did end up placing my order via GrubHub so I was in and out in mere seconds. But not before I got a chance to speak to the staff, who were super kind and friendly! The cold Maine lobster roll was quite literally packed to the gills with lobster meat (there was even a claw!). I can only imagine how generous the overstuffed option is....but for the price you also get a side of slaw and lemon. Overall, well worth the value, especially considering the convenience. The meat was nice and tender. The buns, nicely buttered (heh). Maybe a bit too bready for my tastes, but that was quickly remedied by topping the bread with the delicious slaw. So I went in to grab some tacos to go. I ordered shrimp tacos and the only option was two tacos w a side of fries or coleslaw. I just wanted just the tacos but the girl said it would cost the same side or no side, you can't just order tacos. $15.23 paid and waited. About 5 mins later a family came in ordered and sat outside. Then a few more people came in and got their order and left. They may have ordered before they got there. However someone comes from the back bringing out the family that ordered five mins after me that sat outside their food. I still didn't get my food. A few mins later someone brought out my food and apologized for the long wait. That would have been fine if the food was fresh and hot. It wasn't. They obviously made it, forgot it and it just sat while they served others. They should have made me a fresh batch not served me what was sitting and now no longer hot just a bit warm. The fries were room temp and mushy from steaming in the closed box. I didn't eat the meal. I threw it out because it didn't taste good. Maybe if it were hot it would have made a difference. We're DJ fans and have been to: Key West, Clearwater, Wantagh, Northport, And finally, my back yard, Stony Brook. But what is DJ's Clam Shack? It's a chill place with a few tables that are serving up fresh food. You want clams? From their garlic steamed little neck clams to a fried clam basket, if you want to have a true New England treat? Order an Ipswitch Clam roll or fried clam basket. The Ipswitch clam is the DJ Clam Shack star of the show. I've had the Lobster Roll at all locations but for opening night, I had to try the New England Clam Chowder and a fried clam basket with sweet potato fries. My wife was looking for the conch tacos, the only conch available were conch fritters. Look at that soup! Creamy, dreamy and just loaded with fresh clams and potatoes. I asked at the counter, the soup to go has both a large and small size. Perfect for those cold, snowy days. Fried Clams are like potato chips, you can't just have one. Besides the fish, their Sweet Potato Fries are award winning. And I love the dipping sauce that's served alongside the fries. Sooooo good! I must point out, each of the DJ's Clam Shack are different. Me personally, I'd like to transport myself back to Key West at this exact moment! Each of the spots has a cool vibe as well as a slightly different menu. I really, really wanted to love this place., and I absolutely HATE giving bad reviews. We had been so looking forward to trying it, and it was an expensive disappointment. Our order: 2 lobster rolls (one hot, on cold), onion rings. Price: $63.01. Wow! We were expecting yumminess! The positives: onion rings were great. Crispy, crunchy, nice big ring of onion--not that chopped up mess a lot of places give you. The dipping sauce was tasty, kind of a chipotle Mayo. Fries: same. Perfect crisp and just the right size. Cole slaw: tasted homemade. Perfect amount of dressing. All three needed salt, and thankfully I grabbed a few little packets. Which leads into the negatives: We told the very sweet cashier that it was takeout. She was really lovely, but why no napkins, forks, ketchup, anything in the bag? We're all for being environmentally conscious, but at least ask? We went straight to the beach and had nothing to eat the coke slaw with! Thankfully we had napkins in the car. The lobster rolls: we expected to pay a hefty price and it would have been fine if they were great. They weren't even good. Absolutely awful! Roll itself was fine, fresh hot dog type bun grilled with butter. The lobster itself; 70% that nasty spongy tip of the claw, the rest of the actual meat was over cooked, dry, and honestly flavorless. It definitely tasted like frozen lobster that was cooked. We both agreed that the hot one was better, the lobster was slightly more tender from the warm butter. The cold was dressed with Mayo, celery and tarragon. We both love tarragon, but felt it was way too heavy handed. Lobster was just tasteless, spongy and dry. We may try another time and steer clear of the lobster rolls. I think they're good at frying, which isn't something we eat very often, but it's a nice treat now and then. Bummer. I used to go to Maine frequently and get the Maine lobster roll. The lobster roll here is identical to the Maine ones--the grilled bun, fresh lobster served warm or cold and not overly dripping with butter or mayo. In other words perfect, fully stuffed, and a lot cheaper than most L.I. restaurants. I love the shrimp roll as well. You also get a side with both.
