4.5 STARS A couple weeks ago, the food gods must have been in my corner as treats just kept arriving at work. A talent of ours brought some goodies from Andersen Bakery on Friday, September 15th around 12:45pm. She mentioned this is her favorite bakery as she's from Japan and this is a huge chain there. I just love baked goods, so I was excited. She got me a blueberry and almond paste pastry. It was similar to a kouign amann. Super flaky and buttery. Also, the sugar on it was slightly bruleed, so it had that crunchy sugary texture. So good! I've seen a couple Andersen Bakeries in the city, but they've never been on my radar. Next time I see one, I'll definitely stop by. That kouign amann was delicious! read more

Ordered DoorDash Got the Turkey Swiss with mustard aioli with extra meat and the ham sandwich with extras mustard Abe extra meat. I also added in the notes not to forget the mustard and extra meat (paid for the extra meat) not one sandwich came prepared as listed per their ingredients nor with the extra meat that I paid for. Why say a sandwich has mustard and not add it? Why give the option to pay for extra and not add it ? When complaining to DoorDash they compensate the mistake but not the entire sandwich. I called Andersen multiple times to advise of the mistake and no one answers and the voicemail is full. Ugh read more

With a few minutes free on a Wednesday morning we zipped over to Hillsdale, our objective: a quick bakery run and some caffeine to wake us up. We had been curious to try out the Hillsdale Andersen's Bakery as we had been to to others, one in Japantown and one in Concord, and had had good experiences with both. We tried some new items this time as well as our favorite cheese breads. We brought home a plain croissant, a couple saffron raisin twists, a strawberry/cream cheese pastry, a couple cheese breads and pesto cheese breads. I was anxious to compare the plain croissant to the wonderful one I had had recently from La Chataigne in Lafayette (made with imported French butter). The Andersen croissant was disappointing in comparison: fresh and flaky, but not that moist buttery taste; not great without spreading something on it. Apparently the French butter makes a big difference! The twists and the pastry were okay but nothing special, really no better than Safeway's bakery. Again, somewhat disappointing. Perhaps the pastries of these types are just not their specialty. We do know their dessert tortes are quite good. Ah but the cheese breads made up for it. Both the cheese and pesto varieties were delicious, nicely showing off the top notch Andersen bread. We had another one the next day which we first baked in the oven and - after doing that - it was just as good as the day we bought it. This Andersen's has a nice seating area in the back and a few seats along the window for people eating in. Overall okay given the delicious cheese breads, but some of the pastries a disappointment. read more

They need to make whatever line rules they have more clear. Had a question rather than a bread request and waited over 10 minutes, then was told the person behind me who walked in a minute ago was next in line since I guess I wasn't pointing at breads to buy while I was waiting? I mean, I had a question to ask before deciding whether I was going to get something, so I am not going to make them bag things for me if I don't know if I can eat it or if it's the thing I think it is (my husband likes a particular bread from here, but I am not as familiar with it). Got a bunch of pastries and Ordered a cake from them. Picked up in the morning and was as ordered. The cake was quite tasty. The pastries are average. If you are eating in the store definitely ask them to warm it up, it tastes much better. This place is quite busy especially at lunch time. It's kinda hectic and maybe not the cleanest. I come here because my wife loves the pesto bread. I haven't ever bought anything else from the bakery, but everything looks delicious. They have a good variety of choices from sweet to savory. It's nice that you can see all the different choices and watch them make some of the foods. Service here is usually pretty good. There are times when it is a bit slow. Since they make the only pesto bread my wife can eat, I have to wait whether it is busy or not. In a way it is nice that the service is a bit slow because it takes away that rushed fast food feel and makes it feel more calming. So if you're in a rush, it may not be the best waiting experience. The prices are a bit high for me, so maybe one day when I'm feeling lavish I may try something else. For now, I'm sticking with the leftover pieces of pesto bread from my wife. I am so happy that Anderson Bakery has opened a bakery near my home in Millbrae. I am addicted to their white bread. I really like their raisin bread. It's so good toasted for breakfast. Not sure why the low reviews of this particular location. This is a popular and beloved bakery in Japantown SF. They don't have much of a cake selection but they're well know for their breads. They have a whole line of cheesy breads that can be eaten almost by itself as a meal and their sliced milk bread is a great way to up your sandwich game at home. The milk bread is why those sandwiches at the Japanese markets always taste so much better!! Pillowy soft! read more

So many great choices to eat in this mall. But I go to this familiar chain for a quick pick me up. Desserts are hard to choose from. There are so many beautiful looking options. I have a danish with coffee. Both are very good. Not super special or memorable - not as good as the best from San Francisco bakeries but so much better than the average stuff you get at a supermarket. People working here are great. Very friendly and understanding that choosing might take a minute or two. If you need extra time and there is somebody behind you let them go first. Who is here? A couple people on a lunch break from nearby stores and some fashionistas. This isn't a destination but if you are around don't hesitate to come by. read more

This place is the dirtiest and grimiest restaurant in San Mateo. The floor, chairs, tables and walls are so grimy that it looks like they haven't been cleaned, changed or painted in 30 years. Also, the garbage bin is swarming with flies. The service is also the worst. I was there today and asked them to please clean around a little bit because there was a lot of food all over the floor and tables. Andersen Bakery is conveniently located on the first floor of Hillsdale Shopping Center, near the Macy's entrance. I love stopping by for a pastry after shopping. Most of the breads are typical French pastries (croissants, Danishes, baguettes) but there are also some Japanese-inspired pastries like the Matcha Cruffin. Prices are comparable to other French bakeries. My favorite savory item is the Pisano cheese bread ($4), which is a big French roll topped with tomato sauce and 3 different cheeses. As for sweet treats, I love the Tropical Flan ($3.80), which contains soft and silky flan, whipped cream, sponge cake, and fresh fruit. The strawberry shortcake is also delightful. It's a favorite in our family, and both my mom and I have gotten the 6" for our birthday many times. The strawberries are fresh, the whipped cream is light and fluffy, and the sponge cake is airy and soft. You can also buy their cakes by the slice for about $4. read more

Today 01/15/2022 around 5.30pm i stopped by Andersen bakery shop at Hillsdale mall. I purchased some pastry and was served by a nice gentleman who might be a Spanish. After i paid i asked if i can have a bag with handle , before my conversation was finished suddenly one Asian man wearing glasses and his white shirt and apron appeared with his attitude and speak very loud to me said if you want a bag You have to pay $25 cents. This is very disrespectful and very rude to the customer. I already know bag is charged everywhere and i will pay for it. With the attitude of that Asian man its very unacceptable. He should get training again to speak politely and provide a good customer service. If he a supervisor or a manager unfortunately company hired a wrong person. read more

The service was terrible. We entered the store and was standing in the line to place an order. The server completely ignored us and started to serve the customer who came after us! Even though there were three people and just us, they came to take our order after so long! We ordered for pesto bread and asked for it to be toatsed. The person put the bread in the toaster (not sure if it was even switched on). They ended up serving cold bread where cheese was still thick as it was not toasted at all. An underrated bakery. Bread here is really good. Sandwiches are great! They currently have limited edition Japanese inspired items like matcha tiramisu. I really love their cranberry walnut bread, but I haven't been seeing it lately. I did try their fig and pecan bread which tasted so great after toasting with butter. All in all, i love their breads, love to come here for sliced bread, and the revolving menu items. read more

Arrived here when the mall was just opening! Andersen bakery makes their breads fresh, and I can sure smell the goodness when I walked in! It's a great lunch spot with varieties of salads, soups, sandwiches, pastries, and breads to choose from! I got a salad and sandwich. I recommend the sandwich on sourdough bread.. it's amazing!! It's mall food, so while it tastes fine, the portions are small and the prices are too high for what you get. I go there once in awhile, it's reliable but not exciting. Crème brulee sucks, $4 cheese breads need more cheese, tuna sandwich needs more tuna, soups are too small for the price. Place needs new chairs, the ones there are looking beat-up. I walked into Anderson Bakery on my way out of the mall today to pick up a little carby treat. It's 8:15pm and they close at 9am so the selections were bare but I saw what I wanted and stood at the bread counter for 15 minutes. The lady was speaking to someone at the register the entire time. They were just chatting. I stood for another 5 minutes and the employee at the register couldn't be bothered to help me. I said excuse me and no response so I walked out. I understand that you are off soon and don't want to help anymore customers, but if that were the case, you should probably just close the store early instead of ignoring customers. read more

As for a quick bite to eat there is not that much to select from at Hillsdale mall; this place becomes the default option. The staff are friendly enough... Nevertheless, if you like hot water, buy the hot chocolate because that is how it tastes!!! Oh, and I asked for their tomato ravioli soup, and they told me that they did not have it. Um, ok, I guess they ran out mid-day (2pm)...? Left without my soup and hot water posing as hot chocolate. Rip-off!
