Got a haircut with Feryn at Propaganda Salon yesterday. Really loved both the experience and result. It had been about a year since my last haircut. I didn't love that haircut at the time and it never grew on me. (Well, the hair grew on me. Not my feelings about it.) I delayed my next haircut because, hey, it's a pandemic, and I was mildly dreading another cut. I feel like most stylists do the same thing with my hair, which results in a fairly static shape. I found Feryn via Instagram and double checked reviews for her and this salon on Yelp. I liked her style and no negative reviews stood out so I booked it! The salon is fairly no-frills: no wine, champagne, water, etc, was provided upon check in. It's a small area where conversations between stylists and their customers can are overheard. But it's clean, tastefully decorated, everyone's friendly, and they're abiding by good COVID protocols. Feryn spent about 90 minutes with me altogether, throughout which I felt pampered. She understood my description of what I was looking for (face-framing layers, dynamic shag-style, still some length but less weight, low maintenance). She gave an amazing scalp massage during the hair wash portion. She communicated during the cut, explains the process, asking for feedback, and giving affirmations. (Anyone else get the mid-cut panic/regret, no matter what the stylist is doing??!) But she also didn't pressure me to talk - I'm on the quieter side at appointments like this and appreciate some comfortable silence over forced chatter. I'm really happy with the result. It's fun and different and I think will grow out well. I look forward to learning different ways to style it (or doing nothing and still enjoying its natural shape!). read more

I booked a new client haircut for my teenager, for back to school. She specifically requested this salon because it specializes in alternative hair cuts. I booked through their website, received confirmation, and was told if I cancelled within 24hours there would be a hefty fee to pay. It would be assumed that this means that the salon takes bookings and time seriously. I get a text from the stylist the morning of saying they were running late on returning from a trip. I was asked to reschedule later in the day. After spotty communication all day, I was expecting to push back until early evening. I get a text closer to the time we agreed to reschedule for and they were apologizing for still not being able to make the commitment. While they offered a gifted cut for the inconvenience, it just isn't worth the stress of worrying if that reschedule will be honored or not. For some, it may just be a cut, but for our family it was planned and thought through with much intention. This was going to be a styled cut to affirm and validate in identity. Time is just as important to the client as it is to the person providing services. I was hoping to build a relationship with this salon and support them, but I felt like either we were brushed aside because the appointment was for a teen, or that the person who was supposed to style the hair is just unprofessional. Truly disappointed and I hate writing bad reviews. But please rethink how you treat other people's time. read more

Been going to Propaganda for a couple years now and Andrea for about a year and don't have plans to go anywhere else. It's always a great experience. Salon is very chic, minimal, and open concept (along with lovely floral arrangements, which are for sale!). The music is always great for atmosphere. Andrea takes her time asking how your hair is doing and what you'd like to do. Very collaborative effort. Love that she understands all hair types (wonderful examples on Insta!). I have fine hair but lots of it, which has been a challenge to find the right style and she makes it feel great. I got bangs this year and love how she cut layers to frame my face when I wear my hair up. Even if more time goes by between visits, I really like how my hair grows how because her cut! My hair is super thin and takes a little extra attention to find the right cut. I find most stylists have a difficult time with my thin texture and most don't get it right. The stylist at Propaganda was super sweet, but really gave me the wrong cut for my hair texture. She threw in a ton of layers and really made my hair feel even more thinned out. Not to be melodramatic, but I felt like I had no hair (I think anyone with super thin hair knows how that feels- its a total bummer). Stinks too cause I thought the stylist did a great job with my color, but after giving me a total bummer of a haircut I just couldn't come back. read more

My hair looks great from the time I leave the salon until it's time for my next cut- super low maintenance and grows out beautifully. During my first appointment after I moved to Oregon, I showed her photos of my prior haircuts from a pretty well known stylist & educator back home (who is also insanely talented.) By happy coincidence Feryn said she had taken her class, and my hair looks every bit as good if not better than before. The salon is relaxing and low key, and everyone is really nice. I've been going to Propaganda for 25+ years as I've never had anything but great service and great cuts and color! I have very thin and baby fine hair which can be challenging to cut but they get it right. I had to move away for work for a few years but ended up driving back to Portland to get my hair done!! They had a booth offering hair tinsel at the Belmont Street Fair to promote that service at their salon around the corner, and the tinsel they put in is very pretty, but if I had realized that they were using a straightening iron to MELT it into my hair, I would have gone to the other booth I saw later down the street! (I knew a straightening iron was being used, but I assumed it was being used on my hair to make it easier to work with, not on the tinsel itself!) I feel completely scammed, because they didn't say anywhere that these were meant to be extremely temporary "extensions" which would fall out as soon as I ran my fingers through my hair, much less brushed or washed it. (I've already lost two and it's been two hours of me barely touching my hair.) And all while charging more than every other hair sparkler I've ever been to, all of whom TIE the extensions to the hair so that they can stay for as long as several months. I want to believe they weren't trying to rip people off, but the fact that I was never at any point informed that these would be so very temporary, all while the stylist was looking at, touching, and discussing my existing, tied-in tinsel, and talking about how since I live nearby I could come in later in the year to get more done, makes that hard to do. Was the expectation that I would come in every other day? I feel like the best case scenario is that they were using this bizarre method to get out of having to tie little knots and they don't realize how temporary it is, and that's kind of understandable, I guess, but also...come on. This was my first time at Propaganda, and I'll be back. I have wavy/curly/thick hair that can be a little tricky to cut. They set me up with Scarlett Rasor - who truly listened to my concerns and understood the common issues I encounter with haircuts. I got exactly the cut and styling I asked for, and I couldn't be happier. This is one of the best haircuts I've ever received. Additionally, the salon did a spectacular job with Covid-19 safety - clear communication about protocols in advance, waiting in your car, stylist had clear and punctual communication via text message, they took your temperature upon arrival, lots of sanitation happening, ample space and social distancing, and masks the whole time. I am a curly girl naturally & have lived through enough decades to know that hormones play a big game on my hair. I have had to get a perm 3 times in my life (about once every 10 or so years) to remind my hair what to do after a hormone surge/dysfunction. This year was my 'reminder'. I wanted someone who not only had the years of experience but ENJOYED doing perms. This is an extremely rare thing. Most salons don't even offer it and if they do, they aren't convincing when you inquire (major red flag!). My search brought me to Propaganda the Salon specifically because of Randy Block's stylist bio: "For over 20 years, Randy has been dressing hair right here in Portland. He does cuts colors and perms - THAT'S RIGHT LADIES, he does perms! You could kind of say he's a perm specialist." BAM! Found my person. I called him and we had a brief chat about what I was trying to achieve based on my history. He said that he has had previous experience with this sort of thing and was more than happy to take me on and an appointment was set (he does his own booking on his personal line). Parking was fairly easy. When I arrived, the salon was in full swing. Every station was busy. Randy was finishing up with a client and then came over and introduced himself right on time. I knew what he was thinking and then he said it..."why would you want to do anything to your hair" or something to that effect. I explained to him how well I know my hair and that I trusted him to do the job. It was a good 2 hour visit and he was absolutely awesome through the whole thing. Funny conversation, tips on neighborhood restaurants (we live in the same hood), etc. He offered to give me a hand massage while I was processing which was generous but I didn't take him up on it due to skin sensitivity on my hands. I'm sure it would have been wonderful...my loss! The perm took exactly as I hoped it would. After rinsing and then diffusing a bit, I was on my way. It's unfortunate that I only need to do this once every 10 years because Randy Block is AWESOME!!!! I would recommend him to anyone that was looking to get a perm done. I'm so happy with my hair now that I don't have to manipulate it any more. Best blind hair date ever! read more

I have been to both Hair M and Fada. I have nothing negative to say about either, but I left both of them to go to Propaganda. I have only had experience with Joseph Morris for Cutting/Styling and Content for Coloring. I can't rave enough about them. Joseph has been open and receptive to new ideas and has more than enough brilliant technical skill to add layers to it and really make it stand out. (Don't use my picture to judge him; I have to have conservative haircuts for work) Content can do some of the coolest, most unique colorings and styling's I've seen, but also do some beautiful and elegant work (to hide the grey dontchaknow.) Their prices are great, and most of my friends go to them and their hair is way more beautiful than mine. So 5 screaming Super-Silky-Sexy-Goodness-Haired stars of Hottie-Goodness for Propaganda Hair Salon. Oh, and they are in between Belmont Inn and Salvador Molly's. So, .....double score. read more

This my first time ever writing a review like this BUT this was also my first time ever getting my hair done and I was super excited to get a Balayage. I walked in with a picture and an idea of how I wanted my hair and was super excited. Alicia was very kind and seemed to know what I wanted. I ended up being sadly, very disappointed with my hair. It looks more like highlights than a balayage with big streaks of brassy/orange hair. Sections do not look blended and more like a mix of my natural hair and the light balayage color. The front sections where my bangs are do not look like they fade away more so like you can see where the bleach was painted on. I wanted to feel really confident with my hair and tried to like it but the more I played with it and looked at it, the more I realized it does not look at all like a balayage and more so just like bad highlights. I had booked a haircut and pramasana scalp treatment, after being enticed by a fun promo where you come in with a costume and get a free pramasana with haircut. I had been looking forward to my appointment, because work has been insane, so I wanted to treat myself, and I love Halloween! Fast-forward to today, where work is going horribly, my boyfriend and I are fighting, and my depression is so bad I could barely drag myself to the salon. I arrived only a couple minutes late, in spite of all that, but it clearly felt like I had irreparably messed up and was therefore unwelcome from the moment I stepped in. Alexandra abruptly said, "Alright, let's get going!" and then, realizing I had my costume in hand instead of on (I just didn't have the heart to be a dinosaur today), she told me I needed to go out the door, put it on, and come back in. I told her I didn't have the heart to wear a costume today, and she rather abruptly stated that I needed to in order to get my free scalp treatment. I mumbled about how I was having a really bad day, and maybe we could skip the scalp treatment then, and she abruptly said, "Well, I'm having a bad day, too. Come on." So I awkwardly sat, crying, in the salon for a few minutes while she offered me various things, and I kept just saying I'd rather reschedule. Meanwhile, the other stylists nearby stared, and the other customers looked away. I felt mortified and ashamed. I was passing through Portland, Oregon recently after recovering from Covid and decided that I must renew myself in image. Thus, I took to Instagram after asking a stunning woman in the supermarket who did her hair. At this salon, Alexandra is a stylist and I contacted her to get a feel for her style and general thoughts for my personal qualities and to help me figure out what I was really seeking. (I never much fiddled with my hair coming from Hawai'i where letting grow long is a popular "style." I think that's because it suits Hula dancers frankly and has been held as "fashion" for generations.) Alexandra was so intuitive, assuring, accepting, and as it turns out, talented, that I'm compelled to review her. Her training as she told me comes from various industry "theories" so to speak and she was like a hair polyglot. She also asked ME if she could ask her fellow stylists to give me second opinions especially on color though I immediately felt well-cared for and in the hands of someone very competent already. She didn't do this because she was dubious but rather to give me the benefit of the doubt and allow me to make choices. I've had stylists who went absolutely 360 degrees to the contrary and lopped my locks off! The entire experience was divine. Even the way in which Alexandra touched and washed my hair with such gentleness and touch, I felt loved as a client. I must interject here to say that the salon was very clean and I witnessed the staff using products before and after each client to clean and sanitize thoroughly. It was impressive but not didactic as I've seen elsewhere. I had had Covid and certainly wasn't contagious but I often feel from salespeople as if I'm personally carrying the Plague by their manner of ensuring their work area is hygienic. Staff at Propaganda simply did what they must to produce a safe haven even if for only the time it takes to be coiffed. No need to draw attention to their efforts on Covid dismemberment but instead highlight their gifted selves. So, long story short, I got an A+ renewal by Alexandra, was made to feel so comforted, and bought some fabulous product. No up selling. No nonsense. She expertly and beautifully shaped and highlighted my hair in such a way I didn't feel shocked but rather delighted and look years younger and fresher. If you check out her Instagram pics under Alexandracutme, you'll see a huge assortment of clients with no seemingly repetitious styles at all. Each is unique and interesting and some so nuanced and stylized that I wish I had the nerve to wear. To finalize, this lady is off-the-charts in terms of aptitude, emotion, and personal beauty/loveliness. I couldn't recommend her more. She listens AND hears and then does her artistic best. As it turns out, she was knowledgeable in Ayurveda and this might prove to be very helpful to me. I sat with Scarlett for a bleach, tone, and cut. My rating is only for her, not the salon or other stylists. I wasn't given a quote over the phone or over text when we were booking and exchanging photos for my finished look. So when she charged me the max price listed on the website I was a bit shocked. Not only do I have extremely short hair and only needed my roots done... but she pushed our appointment back 30 minutes, was extremely negative throughout the entire session-I do hope her life improves- and I left with a soaking wet head far from my desired result. 100% has turned me off of salons for further hair alterations. I now have to fix the patchy job she has left me with. I actually cried after getting home and drying it myself to see my actual final result. Don't write off the entire salon, but ask for a different stylist than Scarlett. Especially for a bleach and tone. Her integrity is the real issue, as she referenced that whatever she did to my head wasn't what I wanted BUT offered to fix it at a later date as long as I paid for it. I waited for her 2 day follow-up call she had promised, but again was disappointed when one never came. No disrespect to Ms. Scarlett, however reconsider your stylist if going for for a bleach and tone. I am appalled she had the audacity to refer to herself as the Bleach and Tone Queen while doing my hair because I got better results with Walmart box die myself for a fraction of the price. My botched bleach and tone almost made me overlook the fact that I asked for a hard part in my hair and she didn't do it. Literally so disappointed, but it has been quite the learning experience for me. read more

Honestly the worst dye job and cut I have ever had. I came in asking for a beautiful more natural looking balyage. Andrea took out foil and I left with terrible uneven blonde streaks, they remind me of the time I had my dad help me dye my hair in high school.
