Before our tour of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, we decided to visit Angel Village Cafe for their famous $5 vegan buffet. This cafe is located inside the Sanctuary down a long dirt road. It's a relatively small building but given how popular it is for the lunch, the place gets extremely crowded and chaotic. When we walked in, basically the entire place was full and there were volunteers and employees giving powerpoint presentations about the animals being cared for at the Sanctuary. It honestly felt kind of like a timeshare presentation, but without the pushiness. Luckily there were still seats available outside on the patio, which has some gorgeous views down into Kanab Canyon. In terms of food, everything is vegan. The first table includes a salad bar with plenty of various toppings and six vegan dressing choices. It's all super fresh and healthy. The second table has the main entrees, which on the day we visited was green beans and jambalaya. The green beans are simply boiled until slightly mushy. The jambalaya is mostly soft and tender, approaching mushy, and has kidney beans, onion, tomato, and sausage-substitute (perhaps seitan?) mixed in. The faux-sausage is actually pretty good, being spiced like sausage and having a surprisingly similar texture. The third table has desserts - slices of vegan chocolate cake which taste and feel the same as boxed cake mix, moist and not too sweet. The last table has premixed salads. There's a potato salad that includes plenty of tender potatoes in a creamy mustard/mayo sauce. There's orzo salad that uses a really strong and pungent vegan cheese in place of feta. Finally, there's a spinach and fruit salad, fresh and tangy. All the food is restocked regularly, so while we were there nothing ever completely ran out. Angel Village Cafe serves fresh and healthy food for only $5. It's a no-brainer to visit for lunch while visiting the Animal Sanctuary. read more

One of the most scenic, delicious, and peaceful lunches I've ever had. Every day from 11:30am-1pm the cafe serves a rotating plant-based buffet that somehow costs only $5 per person. The spread includes a main dish, sides, fruit, a full salad bar, dessert, plus coffee and tea. On our visit, we enjoyed Thai peanut sweet potatoes, basmati rice, Thai peanut ramen, and some of the freshest, most vibrant salads I've had anywhere. I was genuinely impressed and this is coming from someone who isn't vegan, though I easily could be if meals like this were part of my daily life. The views stretch across beautiful Angel Canyon, and you can choose indoor or outdoor seating. It truly feels like stepping into a painting. If you're not already familiar with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT, it's worth looking up. The work they're doing to make no-kill shelters a reality nationwide is extraordinary. Angel Village Cafe is awesome! Not only do they offer creative, delicious, and nutritious vegan food every day of the week, it costs only $5 for the all-you-can-eat buffet!! You seriously can't find a better deal anywhere. We dined there three times while staying and volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and we were impressed by how delicious and different the food was each time we ate there. There was always a large salad bar with rotating toppings, some of which were so unique that I couldn't resist overflowing my salad plate with goodies such as pumpkin seeds, vegan cheese, vegan bacon bits, and multiple dressing choices. There was also a soup and dessert choice each day, both of which were wonderful. The main choices varied by day and included cauliflower ceviche, hummus vegetable wraps, Southwestern quinoa salad, a Thai peanut sweet potato dish, kale salad, tofu fried rice, vegan spring rolls, and on and on. The items were vegetable forward yet still filling and hearty. They also have a coffee bar with surprisingly delicious coffee and multiple non-dairy milks to choose from. And I haven't even mentioned the incredible view! There is a large indoor dining room, but if the weather is nice, the outdoor patio can't be beat. You get a spectacular, panoramic view of the canyon below, with its gorgeous red rocks below a vast, blue sky. The employees are very friendly and kind. On Thursdays, one of the Best Friends founders holds a discussion (called Thursday Lunch Stories) where a representative from each animal area gets to give a fun and interesting update about the animals in their care. All money from the cafe goes toward Best Friends Animal Society's mission to Save Them All. That means working to a future in which no cat or dog in a shelter is euthanized due to lack of space. I'm trying hard to not be swayed in my voting by the rather ridiculously cheap price--it really is $5 all-you-can-eat, which is more reasonable for their volunteers than for road-trippers like me! That said, while the food is very tasty, I wasn't blown out of the water by it. The salad bar is fresh and has some good things (tofu is seasoned perfectly) and some less good things (I'm not sure why the lima beans were pickled?). The chili was a standard 3-bean chili, which was well-seasoned and very filling; the broccoli was just normal steamed broccoli, maybe a smidgen overcooked. Brownies were a bit mushy. I'm being ridiculous in going full food-critic when it's a $5 buffet, but hey, I need to stay consistent. I genuinely would have felt fine paying $20 for the same plate of food. read more

The vegan offerings can be found online and the all-you-can eat buffet was fun to browse. The five dollars/person cost was modest taken the salads, entree, dessert, coffee, and tea choices. The staff are very friendly and happy to have you join them for lunch. The ambiance was excellent as the dining room has indoor and outdoor seating overlooking a beautiful canyon. What a lovely spot! For $5 you can enjoy a delicious vegan buffet that varies daily, complete with dessert and fruit, while sitting on a beautiful terrace overlooking Angel Canyon. After you're done with your meal, you can explore the Sanctuary on your own, or visit the animal areas if you have booked a tour. The terrace is pet friendly, and we were happy we could share a meal there with our dog. read more

I have been here over 20 times and cannot believe I have not left a review sooner. I came here alone with my two year old and the staff played with him while I was able to grab my lunch, it was the same lady I always see. Everything is vegan and absolutely delicious. It is always super busy but how can you beat the price and views! They even allow you to grab to go if you cannot stay. They have hot tea, coffee, buffet, fruit and beyond amazing salad bar. We have been volunteering at BF for over 10 years now and highly recommend the experience. This time we noticed the cafe had switched to vegan food, not vegetarian. I was quite disappointed by this as I am one of those evil people who actually use dairy products. Fake creamer and fake honey at the coffee/tea service area? Excuse me, but yuck! Also the vegan desserts are generally not good. Very dry. I'm sure there are cruel practices involved at most dairy farms and egg production facilities, but my four hens are happy to free-range all over 5 acres and I can't stop them from laying eggs. Am I supposed to throw them away? With a bit of research, it seems like BF could partner with a dairy farm employing humane practices, local egg producers, and I don't understand how bees are exploited by forcing them to make honey. read more

The cafeteria is spacious, clean and the view is really spectacular. There is indoor and patio seating. It features all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet for $5.00 per person. The salad bar is well stocked with fresh and canned (beans, beets, etc.) options. The days I was there, the entree was hot and tasty (vegetarian lasagna, quesadillas, and bean soup). For dessert there was fruit and a baked treat. All in all, a very satisfying lunch in a wonderful setting. read more
