The food is decent but not insanely good. the portions are small and the prices are curiously high.not worth the hype.

So seeing as I live around the corner I've been to Angela's a few times and the first few times it was great! I recently went there with my Mom husband and 1 yr old. Well again they were out of the Mexican MeatBalls, so my husband asked what they would recommend...he ordered it and it was the most expensive thing on the menu and my husband said it was the worst thing he had eaten...a dried piece of chicken in a bland green sauce. The waitress never asked if we would like water or an appetizer, then when we finally tracked her down to order an app, she finally brought over some semi warm chips... The guacamole was still the best hands down! As we were eating my son was tearing into my dinner so I asked the waitress for a little rice and beans for the baby. Well I was surprised to see on the check she charged me 8 dollars for some rice and beans for a baby! She brought over an adults portion...very odd. Overall the meal was much more than expected at Angela's, but it was because of the recommended almost 20 dollar entree and 8 dollar baby bite of rice and maybe 4 beans... Maybe all the hype has brought them down. I'll be heading somewhere else for a less expensive meal in Eastie. read more

We had a great dinner here - four different versions of mole because we were all so excited for the mole. I got the best, the pork, but they were all good. Great service, just incredibly nice and welcoming people - a+ for atmosphere. The only thing that really threw us were the prices for the carafes of sangria/margs - they were $30 ea. That's normal for Cambridge or Back Bay, but seemed a bit excessive for driving so far out of your way to East Boston. Sangria was great, but it just seemed overpriced. Went here on new year's Eve with the other half. First off we were late for our reservation but they happily sat us. Awesome. I am not an expert on Mexican food however I love mole and went here specifically for it. It was ok the old Forrest cafe was better. Everything else was fabulous. Sangria lived up to all the reviews I read and service was spot on. Only downfall -parking especially after a massive snow storm. I have been visiting Angela's off and on for a few years and wanted to write a review about my most recent visit. I like to go to Angela's on Sunday mornings after church for brunch. The last few times I have ordered the Chilaquiles with green salsa and eggs sunny side up. The Chilaquiles are very good with a good balance of corn tortillas, shredded chicken, queso fresco, and beans. The service is typically done very quickly, the only thing that is average is the coffee. Highly recommended, better to get their early before 10:00am if you don't want to wait as it's very popular on Sunday. read more

Very tasty and authentic Mexican. Came for brunch and started with the cafe e leche - that was amazing,next came my Bloody Mary which was average at best. I ordered the chilaquiles with steak. The portion was huge and presentation was nice. It was super tasty although not as spicey as anticipated or hoped for. Steak was a bit over cooked, but overall I enjoyed the meal and will return next time I'm in easty. The place itself is small, cozy and unique... It really makes the experience unique. read more

I don't understand Ashley J's unhappiness with Angela's Cafe. I was there on 12/16 (last night). The service was fabulous. Yes, the waitress was not Spanish-speaking, but she certainly knew the menu inside and out, and was very good at explaining everything to us. There was definitely a mix of clientele .... and we "Americans" were in the minority, so the comment about the food not being "authentic" is off-base. Our guacamole was creamy and hearty with just the right consistency. The sangria was heavenly ... we ordered two pitchers for 3 people because it was so good. We each had a different entree and we were very, very happy with the taste, portion size, and presentation of all 3. We had no room for dessert! The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I really wanted to get the mole poblano but ended up having the special - shredded chicken and beef with walnuts with a walnut cream sauce and pomegranate. So good! My mouth is watering now .... What's not to love about Angela's Cafe? I can't wait to go back. read more

Wonderful food and service. My wife and I visited Angela's in late March. A college friend and her husband and two children planned to visit us and were flying into Logan; they were delayed so we went straight to Angelas and said to meet us! They gladly seated us (even though we were an incomplete party) and couldn't have been nicer. When kids arrived, Angela herself offered them up kids' meals (tortilla with chicken and cheese) no charge. Great atmosphere and delicious food; had the abondigas (meatballs, chipotle and egg), split guacamole and also enjoyed a fresh fish special. Tasty margaritas and wonderful service. Angela's is our go to place ! Been coming here for over a year now and cant get enough. The guacamole is the best I have tasted in all my travels. Small hidden gem of a place. My wife and I ate dinner here and it was Fantastic. We live in California so we are used to decent Mexican food. We had the Mole and the Pipian Verde both were outstanding. If you are in Boston and don't have a car just take the subway to Airport Station and go through the terminal. You will come out on the other side of the highway and walk straight up Brooks Street and you will be there. It is a less than 10 minute walk. Waited almost 20 min to get the cafe con leche and almost an hour for the waffles. Very disappointing. And yes it was "full" but they kept serving other tables, multiple times, while I waited for a simple waffles. And wasn't as good so not worth the wait. read more

Went to the new Orient Heights location. Spectacular! Really nice people, great service, quiet enough to hold a conversation - but the food is the real star. The Pipian Rojo con Nopales (pork) was filled with complex favors, absolutely delicious; and the enchiladas perfect. The portions were Very generous - we took home enough for our next nights dinner. I can't say enough good things about Angela's. Not only do we stop in all the time for brunch and dinner, my fiancé and I had our engagement party catered. Wow! While staying in Eastie for a bachelor party we stumbled upon this fine gem. We walked in and were greeted with a friendly smile. After looking at the breakfast menu for a few moments the options were great. Decide on the Central American and it was one of the best breakfasts I've had at a restaurant. The food came and it was better than expected. We walked out of there totally satisfied it was not just a meal but a life experience. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

I had heard great things about Angela's dinner menu, but was pleasantly surprsed to stop by one day at noon and have the choice of a breakfast menu. For $8 I had a generously portioned "Central American" with eggs, ham, queso fresco, refried beans, avacado, and tortillas. It was delicious! read more

I live close to here so went because it was convenient. It's tiny inside which makes it seem cozy. The colors and lighting make it romantic. They brought out chips and salsa as soon as I sat down which was nice. The chips were homemade and the salsa was good. I ordered guacamole, a shrimp tostada, and some pork tamales. All were very good. The portion of guacamole was HUGE even though I ordered small. It came out in a beautiful cast iron pot. The tostada was a little hard to figure out how to eat since it was basically a big round chip piled high with bean paste, lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, and shrimp, but it was the light, fresh dish I was expecting. Tamales were great, although I do wish they would've served some melted cheese dipping sauce with them. (Ah, Texas, how I miss your queso! ) Service was superb. read more

I was pretty disappointed. The food was mediocre. The ambiance was ok and the guacamole was good but the main courses were not. The waiter recommended their "signature sauce" when I ordered the chile rellenos. I said that I would try it. I didn't care for the sauce at all (it tasted like watery spiced chocolate) and when the bill came my dish cost a whopping $22.95. I thought it was expensive at $17.00 for peppers stuffed with cheese but they added 6.00 for the different sauce. (The other dinners that came with the "signature sauce" cost $17.00 so it did not make sense to me for there to be an up-charge). I didn't expect to spend over 60.00 for 2 dinners (no alcoholic drinks). Also, it was so cold that everyone in the restaurant ate with their coats on. read more

Came here on a whim after reading/hearing so many good things about this place. Completely disappointed in every way possible. When we first arrived we asked for a table for two and they said there would be a wait, that is to be expected showing up without reservations, however, after 15 minutes two people walked through the door (no reservations) but were seated right away at one of the empty tables. Seriously... What the heck... We waited another 5 minutes for them to clear off a table that had just left and we were seated. That alone deserves a one star rating... but somehow the experience didn't end there. Any dinning experience is terrible if you have to keep your winter coat on so you don't freeze. Not just our table... everyone in the restaurant still had their winter coats on... The somewhat stylish and kitchy decor just can't compete with "Oh god it's cold in here". The waitstaff was friendly but not so attentive. They could however be a lot more informative and clear. We ordered a side of Guacamole, Chili Rellenos, and Mole Poblano de Angela. The waiter recommended the mole sauce for the Chili Rellenos never informing us there was an extra charge for doing so, and while walking away asked if we would like tortillas. We said sure, again they didn't inform us that the tortillas were an extra 4 dollars. What did you get for the 4 dollars? Two tortillas... Seriously? Most reputable restaurants I go to will let their patrons know if there is an up charge on an item. Most of this can be overlooked if the food is good... now the food... Guacamole was good. Not the best in the city but definitely solid. Ole in Cambridge makes a better guacamole in my opinion but that's a matter of taste. That's about all the good things I can say about the food... The mole sauce, supposedly their speciality, was oddly watery, and sweet without any of the complexity that you would expect from a mole. My pork chop was cooked well but completely unseasoned... the entire dish was bland and the sub par mole really made the dish meh... at best. The Chili Rellenos came with unmelted cheese on top and yet somehow acquired a pool of grease that sat on top of a ladle of the mole. Again completely underwhelming... I mean how hard is it to make peppers stuffed with cheese tasty? Both dishes were seriously under seasoned and the portions trended towards the small side. Rice and beans were served as sides on separate plates, they forgot one rice plate and we had to ask for it. All servings of rice and beans were cold... maybe they should just put it all on one plate so food doesn't get cold quite so quickly. Anyways for two people 2 dishes and 2 sides the bill was about 60 dollars. Complete waste of money... there are soo many places in Eastie that would make a 60 tab seem like a value, Angela's Cafe is not one of these places. I really would try somewhere else. read more

I called ahead to make a reservation. I specifically asked if this was a "true reservation" and the person guaranteed we'd be seated within 5-10 minutes of the time I requested. I thus arrived on time - turns out it was still first-come-first-serve and we had to wait another 50 minutes to be seated. They didn't uphold any sort of "reservation" - which would've been fine if they'd simply been honest and upfront from the beginning. Food was mediocre. Not going back. read more

I moved to East Boston several months ago and keep meaning to write a review. This place is fantastic. I go here way too much and no matter when I go the food is fresh and just delicious. Have yet to try a dish I don't like, but my favorites are the guacamole and flautas. Also the burritos. I really appreciate how consistently good the food is; I always have friends & family visiting me and Angela's is such a good way to impress them! The space is very tiny, but this is a neighborhood restaurant on a side street, it's not supposed to be big! Can't fault them for it. read more

Angela's was a nice break from Chipotle and Qdoba. Tried the chicken burrito and steak burrito, both were very authentic tasting and cooked to perfection. Prices on the burritos were good, but prices on entrees seemed a bit high. Only complaint was that there wasn't much room to customize the burritos, as we're used to with places like Chipotle around. For exceptional and traditional Mexican cuisine, you'll want to try Angela's. My daughter, who is a very picky eater ate a very large platter of chicken quesadillas. She said it was the best she's had. Coming from her that is huge. If you don't want the pico da gallo or the guacamole that comes with it, please let them know. They seemed very offended by wasted food. I had the nightly special and it was delicious, as well. The place was very busy for a Wednesday night and very small, but worth the wait. The waitress was very attentive. The wait was a little long to get our food, but the kitchen looked small and the staff were few so I understand why. It was worth the wait. read more

My wife and I decided to celebrate Valentine's day here. We both really wanted to like this place. She is from Mexico so her opinion on the food is important. There were still some open tables when we arrived, so we were pleasantly surprised. The ambiance and service were excellent- as they promptly brought over some chips and two simple salsas. We both ordered red sangria which were okay for the size and price. We ordered the renowned guacamole with jalapenos- it was good but they could have added a little more tomatoes. We waited about 10-12 minutes for the entree. She ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. Presentation was nice- three long enchiladas. It came with very small sides of rice and beans. She thought that it the mole was very authentic but the portion size was small for the price. The chocolate taste of the mole was not overwhelming. I ordered a steak taco- but it was very tiny, also a sopa azteca- small size but it was very tiny and rajas poblanas - a good size portion. But I was still hungry- and I am a skinny guy. We went to a nearby place in Maverick Square for more food. Sorry but we will not be going back. minus two stars for lack of value. I felt like I just came back from a place that was on Hanover Street instead of East Boston. Overrated place. read more

Angela's is a great restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I have been for all three meals and enjoyed their diverse offerings every time. The restaurant is small and there is not a lot of outdoor seating, but generally I have not had too much trouble with getting a seat or having to wait; however, Angela's does offer take-out, which I have also done and had no problems with. read more
