We've Found a New Favorite! Sabina Mezcaleria - Back Bay What a wonderful find! Sabina Mezcaleria is a cute, cozy restaurant with impeccable, genuinely warm service and absolutely incredible food. We always prefer eating at the bar--it feels more personal and less transactional, and we've met so many wonderful strangers that way. Last night reminded us exactly why we love it. Luis, our El Cantinero, took us on a spectacular journey through the world of mezcal and tequila. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about what he does. We learned so much from him about tequila and mezcal, and he made the whole experience feel like an adventure rather than simply ordering drinks. And then came the food! I had the Enchilada Mole, and the mole was beautiful--deep, complex, rich, and perfectly balanced, without that powdery quality you sometimes find in lesser versions. The Chicharrones were enormous, thick, and cooked perfectly--almost melting in your mouth while absolutely exploding with flavor. Then came my favorite: the Empanada de Maíz. We had the one with chicharrones, beans, and mozzarella, and I almost cried. Seriously. SO flavorful, with this delicate little crispy coating on the outside that made it extraordinary. From Luis and the bar experience to every plate that came out of the kitchen, this was just an exceptional evening. Warm, intimate, delicious, and memorable. We came up from Providence by train, and Sabina alone is worth the trip. We've found a new Back Bay favorite--and we will absolutely be back! read more

Last night we went to Sabina Mezcaleria to watch the Mexico vs South Korea World Cup game. It was great World Cup atmosphere. I must admit that based on some other Yelp reviews I was expecting the food to be ok but I was so very pleased because everything we ate was absolutely fantastic!!! I didn't take any photos but will say that the following were FABULOUSLY delicious and very much worth ordering. Esquite Tostada Cuadrito de Lechón Mini RibEye Tacos Guacamole with RibEye Chicharron You will need 4-5 of their small plate sized apps for 2 of you to share. BTW I always try to have a Michelada at Mexican restaurants. I ordered at Sabina with a Modelo and theirs was fantastic. This is my favourite place on Newbury street. I actually found this place on Instagram, hidden away in one of the "bottom" restaurants. Now a lot of the places off Newbury are tourist traps, but this one? Definitely a local favourite! Pro tip: always make reservations. This place books up fast! I actually had to call in when I didn't see any online and they were happy to accommodate. The place inside is tight as they try to fit as many people as they can. The service is very nice and fast, always checking in on you. Love it. Now the food. Everything is shareable tapas style. Don't be uncultured and get your own, order to share. Patatas bravas is the elite tapas. A classic, so always order it. The steak tacos with the different salsa is another superb option. Not pictured is the bone marrow tacos I got, so delicious I forgot to take a photo. Grilled octopus was also very savoury. We threw in a beet carpaccio to have some vegetables to balance the protein. One thing I do love about this place is it's not overly crowded that you can get a seat even at peek hours! Service is great and drinks are tasty. A bit on the sweeter side, but you can ask to adjust to taste. When it comes to the food, it was all very tasty, the inly feedback is the meat is overcooked, but that could just be how they cook it. I think their dishes when it comes to the meat is meant to be friend, but it leads to very chewy tough meat. I will need to go back for a third time to try other dishes. My wife, daughter, and I went here for dinner and had an excellent time. The location is in the basement of a building on Newbury Street. The interior is well decorated and very comfortable. It is cool and dark, which adds to the atmosphere. We arrived a little early but were seated right away. It was largely empty at 6:30, which worried us a bit. However, by 7:15, it was full. Our server was OK. She was in and out in terms of providing opinions and being available when needed. However, her helper, who brought most of the food, was amazing. He offered great advice and was very attentive. The cocktails were excellent. We actually settled on their Old Fashioned, and it was GREAT. The innovative ingredients provided an extremely satisfying cocktail. The food was great. We loved the tapas format as it allowed us to try a variety of plates. We had the brisket, the rib-eye steak, and the rock shrimp (SPICY and my favorite). We even had some ice cream for dessert that was great. Look at the included photos for the complete rundown. Sigh. I wanted to like it here, I really did. I chose it because of the plentiful mezcal cocktails on the menu and the food options spanned a few of my favorites from my time living in Mexico. The restaurant was very cute. I liked the decor. Yes it was on the dark side, but I prefer people not to see me in the light of day anyway. Even though the restaurant was completely empty, it took a little too long for the server to come over initially. I drank the spicy chipotle cocktail and that was definitely the highlight of the evening. It was delicious. In fact, I made the assumption that we were off to a strong start, especially since they also brought free bean tacos. Now for the food...even my favorite dish of the night was mid (as the kids say. Actually I hope I'm using this word right. It was as ok). My favorite was the huitlacoche empanada. It wasn't special. The esquites tostadas confused me...to be fair I did order them but why are esquites on a tostada? That felt odd. Plus they were maybe the worst esquites I've ever tasted and if I were served these on a street corner in Oaxaca I would have asked the vendor if he was feeling ok. The sorriest dish of the night was the ceviche. Again, my fault for ordering raw fish in an empty restaurant midweek, but the fish tasted old and it lacked acid. We came here for dinner on a rainy, Thursday night. The Good: -Great vibes, small intimate space. Pretty bar. -Very attentive, polite staff -Beautiful Plating -The complimentary bean quesadilla in the beginning is yum! The Not-so-good: -The food was pretty bland. BF said his chicken mole enchilada ($10) was dry, and the sopes ($16 for 3) were nice but the beef one was super watery and not flavorful at all. First came here for Tasting Collective in 2024 and it was FANTASTIC. I love the food here, it's so flavorful and tastes fresh while still being unique around Boston. The drinks are EVEN BETTER. Personal fave is the coconut mezcalita. The servers are nice, attentive, and have good recommendations. My only gripe is that the place is dark, loud, and a little cramped, which can be an issue when everybody's 3 mezcalitas in. Also only one single stall bathroom. Staff is friendly and drinks are great! The nights in Oaxaca is not super smoky and has a nice sweet/tartness to it. The dos con panocha is a lot smokier- loved it. The bartender warned us the food is tapas size, which is nice of him. The smoked fish quesadilla is pretty small but filling, the grasshoppers have a slight kick to them and come in an espresso sized mug. Not sure I'd get them again as the seasoning was a bit overpowering but I'm glad I tried something new! I was most impressed by the mini rib eye tacos- they were legitimate entree size, had a generous amount of meat and the tortilla seemed handmade (they crumbled and fell apart very easily unfortunately). The space is small but slightly stark. I wish the seating in the dining area was a bit cozier but the bar was perfectly adequate. I'd come back to make my way through the menu! read more

Let me preface this review with I have eaten at an insane amount of Mexican restaurants. This is the BEST one in Boston hands down! I promise you this place will not disappoint you. Lets start with seating, this place sits around 50 or so along with a vibrant bar. Its a dark vibe inside, they also have a patio (like most on Newbury st). The service was generally as if they forgot about you being there with long waits in between. Although, I will say it didnt matter once the food came (service part to be continued). They start you with complimentary bean tacos. I'll be honest I didnt think much at this point but there isnt much to this. We ordered the tamale, it was absolutely out of this world. I have been to Mexico (not Cancun I actually went to where locals go) this tamale was as if I was sitting in Mexico and ordered it. The display was also top notch. It was so good we ordered a second one out of gluttony. Next we moved to the Mole, which once again was amazing. I am an avid mole eater and this was insane. 5/5. Last but certainly not least was the steak tacos. This was an absolute home run. The steak was perfect in every way from seasoning to the actual temperature. Not to mention the handmade tortilla. As I was waiting for the desert menu I chatted it up with the manager Pancho who was an absolute pleasure. As we decided upon getting the dulce de leche flan.. Panch shows up with the flan on the house!!! This guy read our minds! At this point we were blown away. Pancho went above and beyond and we will absolutely be returning. This is a must try!!!! We only planned to be here for an hour to try their drinks, but ended up here for three hours and even tried some of their dishes! I'd say that says a lot about how much we enjoyed this spot! First off, they didn't seem too busy on a Saturday night, with almost all their tables filled, but plenty of bar seating available. Our server was amazingly helpful and cheery, promptly grabbing our orders and wasting no time in getting our drinks back to us! I really felt like the service here was so efficient. Regarding their drinks, they were delicious!! We tried three drinks each, and felt that they were all unique and definitely something we'd order again. Came here with reservations on a Saturday evening for an early dinner and we were seated quite quickly. The place wasn't particularly busy when we came so it was pretty quiet which led to a nice ambiance overall. The tables were clean but also tightly packed together; the hightop we were at was pushed against a wall which led to feeling a bit cramped. The menu had a good mix of foods, all pretty expensively priced honestly. The portions were a on the smaller size given the price point, but being on Newbury, that's to be expected. The food itself all tasted very solid - I enjoyed the guac and tacos as well as the ceviche which all came with more filling/substance than expected, however things were disproportionate in terms of chips to topping ratio. There was a surprising amount of guac left as well as ceviche compared to the carb source provided. Nonetheless, they were all pretty small and we were left feeling a bit hungry after ordering everything. Overall, I probably wouldn't opt to return on my own accord, but I would be fine coming if it were someone else's choice. Everything was delicious, as we had a great time talking with one of the owners Pancho, who give us some detailed information regarding the history of the restaurant and how everything is made from scratch. 4.5-5 - I will be coming back! Very welcomed addition to Newbury/Back bay. Chapulines (grasshoppers) - light crunchy well seasoned snack. Guacamole- needs more lime/salt for my taste but otherwise was good. I'll probably get the cotija cheese one next time. Camarones/Shrimp - SO good! Has a nice kick. Octopus - never had it prepared this way. I usually have it grilled. It was hard to tell it was octopus, but the sauce was good. Squash blossom soup - YES! Delicious!! Mini sopes - YUM YUM YUM Soft shell crab taco - never had soft shell crab so don't have a good reference for this. It was decent but somewhat underwhelming. I am so impressed and happy that this restaurant has opened. It's easily one the best places to eat on Newbury Street. For example, I usually don't like the smoky, lingering taste of mezcal but even I couldn't stop drinking the Nights in Oaxaca cocktail. Equally as tantalizing were the foods. The mezcal drink I got was super sweet and another drink my mother got was as well, so our server graciously traded it for a glass of wine (thank you). We popped in for a quick drink before a dinner reservation, so this review is for the bar and cocktails only. We ordered the Nights in Oaxaca and Dos con Panocha, both of which had great presentation and were delicious. While they didn't exactly disguise the mezcal flavor, I would say both drinks were relatively approachable for someone who is less familiar with or thinks they don't like mezcal. I thought the Dos con Panocha was particularly interesting, if you slowed down and really tasted it was very complex. Stumbled upon this restaurant on a Friday night walking around Newbury Street. There was a bit of a crowd but luckily they had a table available for us within 10 minutes. The vibe of this place was very cool and trendy, definitely somewhere I would have grabbed drinks before a fun night out in my 20s. The food overall was pretty good, mostly bite sized sharable dishes. We ordered the corn tamal, soft shell crab taco, pork, octopus, and mini rib eye tacos. What a treat! We had been wanting to come here for a while, as it's T accessible and right on Newbury St. We made a reservation for a Tuesday evening a few days in advance. When you walk in, the restaurant is small and nicely decorated. A full service bar and about 10-12 tables for seating. Our waiter was great, gave us recommendations for drinks (especially the Mezcal, which is what they're known for) and the sharable tapas. Everything tasted delicious, from the tacos to the sopes! Mezcal....do tell?? First off, 10/10 vibes. Beautifully nestled below street level it truly feels like an escape from Boston. Mezcalitas will transport you to Mexico with one sip. The picture is what they bring to the table as you sit down. Nothing like tasteless, stale, passive agression to start a meal. We ordered cocktails first. The Spicy mezcalita was so bad, we decided not to order anything beyond the first round of drinks. Couldn't taste anything other than salt. It was objectively , to everyone at my table who tried it, garbage. And the waiter managed to spill it down my leg as he was serving it. They are lucky I tipped on principal. This place isn't an award winning mezcal bar, it's a comedy club. Because what they serve is an overpriced joke. It's also so dark you will trip down the stairs coming in from a sunny day. I ordered a blood orange martini, which was decent, but I tried my friend's tamarind mezcal drink, which was really good (coming from a person that doesn't normally like mezcal at all). The Lechon was our favorite dish of the night. They also gave us something as service that night [Dec 1], not sure what it was, but was extremely delicious. Flan was also amazing and a must-have!
