Everyone says to support mom and pop restaurants, but outrageous prices and skimpy portions are exactly what drive people away. I've been feeling sick and ordered soup from Angela's, expecting comfort, not disappointment. Paying $18 tax included for a bowl that wasn't even filled to the top is ridiculous. Me and my family were visiting my grandparents in Tucson, Arizona and my grandma recommended this place to us for Mexican food nearby. We checked online and the reviews looked alright, but when I looked on yelp it gave a more honest perspective, so please listen!! Also, FYI, we are from Chicago- a city that has hundreds of really good mexican places- so we expected this place, only an hour away from Mexico, to be pretty good. SPOILER: it wasn't. It started off with average/okay service when taking our orders, a little confusion but overall easy and quick. The total added up to $120 which was unexpected as we thought this was a relatively cheaper place, but regardless we didn't want to assume the worst. We ordered 6 large horchatas for each member of our family, but when they served us they only had enough for 4 large cups and told us the other two would be out soon. This is where everything took a wrong turn; the horchata was extremely grainy and felt like you were drinking sandy water. I have had grainy horchata before but this was nothing like that, and remotely undrinkable. I gave it to my dad and asked to get a different drinks instead of the last two horchatas. The server said sure then unexpectedly instructed me to just grab the drink myself from the fridge behind the counter. This didn't bother me but just felt weird since the restaurant wasn't busy at all and she wasn't the only one working. Then the food was brought out and as much as I wanted to forget everything before and just enjoy my food, I found a hair in my food that was neither the color nor length of my hair. The birria I got was not a conventional birria taco; the tortilla was not dipped, there was no consome on the side, and the meat seemed to be the only thing that was dipped in the consome. After both of these things, I was not thrilled to eat but I went up to the salsa bar, which was closed and hard to find until the server told us where it was. The salsa bar had only 3 spoons and 1 tongs for 8 different toppings and to serve myself I had to wipe off one spoon and dip into another. The salsa verde I poured was very bright green and was extremely spicy that had no flavor but intense spice. Overall, I could tell that this place seemed to be struggling or going through a rough time, but restaurants should still be able to serve average food and this restaurant wasn't even sub-par. I would avoid this place if you are looking for really good, cheap, authentic Mexican food. If you need a quick bite, this will do, but be weary. read more

Thank you Yelp for this travel find. Starving from driving all day down to Tucson, AZ. Looked up Yelp for authentic Mexican and found this basic hole in the wall/strip mall joint with tasty authentic food, hot salsa and fast service. Do ask for the hot sauce (it is not on the salsa bar, it is house made and popping!) We only used half the lil cup and took it with us to enjoy on eggs the next day. Authentic tacos. The meat is fresh and you get a massive quantity on the tacos. I tried the asada, chicken, and beef and potato. All were delicious and had just cabbage, which was just enough to bring out the flavor of the meat and not mask it. The salsa was made in house and while it had a bite, wasn't too spicy to use. Overall just legit tacos in a random shopping center, but worth a stop. Overall great food, giving it 4 because the kitchen staff were not wearing masks (although the person at the register was). read more

WE ARE OUT!! We have eaten here for years. BUT today will be our last. The cashier turned to us and said I am busy. Maybe say ... I'll be right with you!! It took 10 minutes to take our order. (Because she is busy). We waited over 15 minutes for food. Small order. Cashier is very disorganized and more worried about her hair and how she looks. Food is not the same. The carne asade was extremely tough. terrible quality of meat maybe. There were several flys that would not leave us alone. 31.00 for carne plate and bowl of posole. WOW! I can't believe I have lived on the NW side for a decade and didn't know about this little gem. The Angela Burrito is simply delicious. The tacos are street tacos, and they pack a lot of flavor. Speaking of flavor, you won't find any watery hot sauce here (like the green and red containers at Nicos). Their salsa is thick and has just enough kick. The RICE!! It's all about that spicy slow cooked rice. It reminds me of my moms rice. I also have to add that the Angels fries are a must have as well as the Sonoran dog. We grabbed a bunch of food to go and all slit it. It was a great feast, and we will be back again. 5 stars all the way! PS no pictures because it was too delicious! read more

Waited 45 minutes for chicken nachos, instead they to give me chicken taco's. Cashier realized that my order was wrong she didn't look at me or say sorry instead she went into the kitchen & started preparing my order. Very disappointed, nachos are suppose to have gooey melted cheese all over the tortilla chips. In her rush she put tons of tomatoes and a very small amount of cheese not melted. This place is not easy to find on first visit. Located behind Walgreens on Silverbell. YELP said it was open and I was in the area. Went on Thursday and they were closed!? Later found out they closed for "Day W/O Immigrants"??! I don't think that really helped their business. I will not return, ever! read more

The cashier was nice however, the food had no flavor. The rice was just orange steamed rice. No hint of spices on any of any kind in the food. Usually, the meat is marinated prior to cooking but even that could be overlooked if the meat was at least seasoned. The salsa was ok and was the only thing that had any type of flavor. The carne asada didn't even have salt. The tortillas were good but they probably buy them pre-made. As time passed my lunch upset my stomach. Today is the day after and I still feel bad. Filiberto's restaurants are way better in my opinion but even that isn't saying much. I just thought the food should be better if you are selling it and shouldn't make people get sick. My check in indicated my excitement to be going to Angela's...my experience (food related, not service related) deflated my excitement. The service was friendly enough, the inside was as I expected -- a few places for sitting, designed for the quick on the go sit down -- the food was not what I thought it would be, the price was average. I felt I could have gotten more for the same price somewhere else and better. I ordered the cheese enchiladas, they are my kryptonite -- just not from here. There was just something unappealing about them to me (pictures attached). I just did not get the vibe that my food was "fresh" and the taste was not one I am accustomed to. The sauce was sweet and spicy. I just don't think that flavor combination works for this dish. The guacamole was defiantly not fresh either. The whole dish just did not work for me, though I wanted it to so badly. My husband had the Carne Asada quesadilla -- it was large, hot but my husband said it was not anything to go running home about. Overall it was just not the quick yummy experience we wanted, though the establishment was clean and staff was friendly. I love the posole here. It's one of the best I have ever had. It's very spicy so be careful but I prefer it that way. It's only available on the weekends so that's when I come in. The customer service here is bad. No one is ever friendly and it takes a long to be served even if no one else is there. I've had the posole, breakfast burritos, tacos and hot dogs. I would recommend the posole and breakfast burros but that's it. The hot dogs weren't really sonoran style and that's the only way I like it. If anyone has been to a Nico's, or one of the Beto/Berto Mexican fast-food joints, the concept of this restaurant will feel very familiar to you. Although, the food has more personality. After months (maybe even years) of my father talking about how some of his co-workers rave about this place, we finally tried it. It was a Saturday afternoon, and we were on our way back towards Oro Valley, heading south on the freeway. When you exit the freeway at Twin Peaks road, it is located in the master-planned community of Continental Ranch, not far from the freeway. First impression was that it was your typical Mexican fast food joint; it's located in a strip mall, yellow latex painted walls with distinctively Mexican art, you order at the counter, etc... The restroom, however, I found to be a tad on the dingy and dilapidated side; that isn't typically something you see in a Mexican eating establishment. Also, the booths were quite hard. I ordered the adobada torta, and my dad ordered a red chile burro. All of our food looked excellent, but mine looked especially good. It was adobada meat, cabbage, tomato and avocado slapped between Mexican fry bread. This one one of the best meals I've had in a Mexican fast food place. It wasn't the least bit bland. And that bread... If I could buy it in a store, I'd have some in my pantry at all times. It's nice to know now, that when/if I'm on that side of town, I know where to get something good; I'll definitely be back! read more

Had the carne asada fries, AKA, Angleas Fries. It was decent for fast food. Fresh ingredients, plenty of toppings. My husband got the chimmichanga, he liked it, enough meat, not dry. Beans and rice, standard. Two soft tacos with beef was ok, needed a little more seasoning. The Pico de gallo was freshly made, also needed a bit more seasoning, and was mild. I think they are as good as Nicos down the road but much more reasonably priced, and their salsas are far superior to Nicos. read more

Soooo disappointed. I've had food from Angela's before and it was good. Today was stopped by because I was hungry for a hot dog and how can you go wrong with a Sonoran hot dog. Well today Angela's did. I heard famous Chef Ann day, "Brown food tastes good." That might be right unless that food is a dark, very dark brown.
