Sitting in the corner of a strip mall, Rosa's is easy to miss during the day. But that hasn't stopped this family-owned restaurant from thriving since the early 70's. What I loved: The atmosphere. The sturdy, old tables adorned with decorative tiles makes it feel like you're in someone's home. The salsa is amazing. What I liked: Warm, attentive service. I was surprised that a late lunch here took just a half hour. What needs work: Plenty of patrons love the hard-shell tacos, and they might have been good if not for the bland, dry shredded chicken inside of them. I ordered the chimi, smothered in green salsa. There was zero heat to it and I had to question whether the sauce came out of a can. I still ate everything, and would probably return if someone dragged me back here. It's not that bad. Here comes another first time review. Came in on a Thursday at 5 pm. Pretty empty had a several choices of tables. Typical fiesta type decorations. Music in the background. We started with a green chili cheese crisp. Light, crispy and very cheesy. Much the same as most establishments around town. For the main course I had a chili relleno and shredded beef taco with the standard side of beans and rice. My mother had 2 green corn tamales with beans. The food was delivered extremely hot, which is good, but it had to sit for 5-10 minutes so you didn't burn your eatin' hole. The shredded beef tacos, while tender and juicy lacked seasoning and were very bland however the house salsa saved them. The chili relleno was absolute fire! Delicious, flavorful delightfully fried. The green corn tamales got a favorable review from my mother. She said they were very good. The rice and beans can make or break a Mexican restaurant and I found both to be very edible, better than 90% of other establishments. The service itself was a little lacking. Server never returned to fill drinks or check in on us. So it will get 4 stars on this review. All in all a good meal for a fair price. 9/10 would recommend. read more

A friend's favorite Mexican restaurant and I was excited to try it. The restaurant is large, and very colorfully decorated. The service was very quick and friendly. It felt like a family owned restaurant. I ordered the Tostada salad with chicken and it was fairly average. A flat crisp tortilla, refried beans, lots of iceberg lettuce and good avocado. The chicken was shredded white meat chicken. Not much flavor but a good texture. I used the salsa they served with the chips as a dressing. It was fine but nothing to write home about. My friend had the enchilada style burrito with ground beef, and she seemed to enjoy it. Maybe I should have ordered something covered with sauce or melted cheese. read more

I ended up going back twice more while in town. Both with other people and had completely different experiences. The food was always solid. The shredded beef tacos are the best out of those and the ground beef. But ground beef ones still good. The chili Relleno is super good. In a city with tons of Mexican restaurants, Rosa's is a good choice. The inside is a little outdated and I'm sure looks the same as it did back in 1970 when they first opened. The service wasn't great, for it being a slow night. The chips and salsa to start were delicious. The salsa was some of the best I've had. I ordered Rosita's Specialty-1 chicken enchilada, 1 chicken taco and 1 green corn tamale with beans. I asked for no cheese on the tamale or taco but it came loaded with cheese so I just scraped it off. The chicken taco was SO GOOD. I'll order a plate of those next time. The tamale was just a chunk of masa and the enchilada was good but a little bland. The beans were ok, possibly made from a bag. For Mexican food, everything was very mild. This small hole in the wall Mexican restaurant serves some pretty decent fare. Their chips and salsa stand out as being excellent. The rest of the menu items are the typical Mexican fare and are all solid choices. O especially enjoyed the Chile Relleno dish. Our sever was friendly and the food arrived quickly. First of all, I love Rosa's, have been going there for 30 years plus. The potatoe cheese soup has problems: there is too much cheese and not enough potatoes.,There is a huge lump of cheese at the bottom. Cheese is so much more more expensiive than potatoes, I don't get that their buyer doesnt't get that. I am out here for work training from Las Vegas, being as we have so many restaurants out there I wanted to see what Tucson has to offer. After reading some reviews online and looking at some pictures I decided this was the place. I decided to call ahead and make sure that they were open for dine in and they are, I arrived around a little after 5pm closer to 6pm I was sat down and asked if I wanted anything to drink I chose there michelada and boy was it delicious! Made with just the right amount of spice and flavor. I ordered the chicken tacos with rice and beans. The chips and salsa were delicious the salsa had the right spicy kick to it too. The food arrived hot, fresh and fast! The tacos were very good with a generous amount of chicken. I was satisfied with my first time experience here the food was great and so was the service. I've been going to Rosa's off and on for the last 15 years every time we leave, we get a quart of salsa to go. To be honest the food is just so so but the salsa is fantastic and a little higher priced than normal but today I go in to get a quart of salsa and like a Coke to go, and the guy looks at me and said a quart of salsa is $30. That's highway robbery!!. Is this stuff made of gold? Being a Tucson Native who was raised on local Mexican food, it's not common for me to find a "new to me" Mexican restaurant... but, last night we did exactly that! After some kids-sports-spectating, my beautiful bride said she wanted Mexican for dinner so we started the inevitable and omni-present discussion of "where should we eat?" We turned it into a challenge - we had to find a new-to-us Mexican restaurant that is a locally-owned independent business (always a requirement for us - we're all about local business)! We found Rosa's Mexican Food. *applause* The place is unassuming from the front, located at Ft. Lowell & Campbell in the strip mall. However, when you walk in, you find yourself in an authentic family Mexican eatery and you know you made a good decision. The first thing we noticed, and this thing is EVERYTHING, was that their salsa is absolutely amazing! It's restaurant-style (on the smoother side, which I love) and the flavors punch you in the face in the best way. Just spicy enough, but still at a crowd-pleasing level... and loaded with flavor. Seriously, it seems trivial, but the salsa was absolutely delicious. I will be taking some home with me next time without a doubt. We ordered the shrimp fajita tacos and the shredded beef chimichanga - both were excellent. The flavors were rich and distinct, the tacos weren't oily at all, and the tortillas are all homemade in-house! The enchilada sauce on the chimichanga was also really thick and flavorful. It stayed on my bite as I picked it up from my plate (I can't stand watery sauces that never make it to my mouth). At the end of dinner, my better half proclaimed this was her new favorite Mexican restaurant (that a big compliment). Given the close proximity to where we live, Rosa's will be absolutely be somewhere we frequent in the future. Best carne seca in Tucson! Carne asada is fantastic as well, but it was better and more affordable when it was strip steak. Oh, and did I mention, the best salsa in town hands-down! I haven't been there in years. I and my SO went there for quite a bit. At least once a week for years. We loved talking to the cashier who was the daughter of the owner because we had the same SUV but hers had a rose on it. Everything was fine until her brother started waiting tables. Extra charges on our bill every time he was our waiter which she would take off and then one time we asked for guacamole. He came to our table with an avocado the size of a very small peach and cut it in half. He acted like he was some gourmet chef only leaving half the avocado smashed but with no seasoning or anything and charged $7 It was good for like 5 chips. I told his sister on the way out that I would pay for it but would not be back. Funny how back then I spent over a hundred dollars a month in the place but still will not go back.
