Last year for 2025, Tucson took six coveted spots on Yelp's 100 Best Places to Eat in 2025. This year there is only one spot at #32 and it goes to Tumerico, a vegan place. You bet your ass I am going to check it out on this Taco Tuesday. Okay, the guy that greets you welcomes every customer with wide open arms. I mean, never ever have I ever met someone that awesome!!!! He walked us through the menu that seemed to have a hundred plus items. We were so overwhelmed. He told us his favorite and that is what my son ordered. The guy took the time to ask what we were in the mood for. And as we were leaving he shouted goodbye all across the room. When someone is that happy, it's infectious. Here is what we ordered: - Chocohata (authentic Oaxacan chocolate) - Mesquite Latte - Frida Khalo Tostadas - Chile Relleno - Taco Plate Warning: portions are huge!! TL;DR: If I were blindfolded, I would never have guessed this was vegetarian/vegan. Amazing experience and will absolutely be coming back. For what it's worth, I don't necessarily agree with Yelp's rating that Turmeric is the #1 (!) spot to eat in America. That's a stretch. HAVING SAID THAT, Turmeric is doing everything right and is outstanding in every way. The service the minute you walk in is friendly, patient, and welcoming. The salsa bar is well-stocked and flavorful. Coffee for while you wait, which honestly isn't long even when it's busy. The turnover on tables is fast because the food comes out hot and fresh, you can't stop eating The cuban tacos!!! Wow - really couldn't have told you the difference between these and actual meat tacos. Juicier than most and definitely more flavorful than any other vegetarian option I've ever had. The Freida tacos were alright - a little blander than I had hoped and wasn't trying to be anything other than a veg taco. Personally, get the Cuban tacos. You won't regret it. Promise. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly, and asked if this was our first visit. The employee explained to us that the menu changes daily and everything is vegan or vegetarian. We'd been impressed that Guy Fierri ate here, and the chef is award winning, so we were really excited. Absolutely everything looked amazing, and it was hard to decide what to eat. Then a staffer walked by with food for another table and called out to us which dishes they were! That helped me decide on the Frida Khalo tostadas. My party included two people who haven't eaten at a lot of vegetarian restaurants, and they were very impressed. We all loved our food, it was beautifully presented, and the portions were huge. They have expanded the restaurant since the last time I was there. There's 3 big rooms for dining, a salsa bar, and 2 self serve water stations. There's also desserts, and gifts available. I tried the special coconut curry. It was sautéed vegetables with yellow curry a with a side of beans and rice. It was good and plenty of food. Service was great. Very friendly and quick. Turmerico is such a gem in Tucson's food scene. I haven't been in a while since it's a bit of a schlep for me, but every time I do go, it's fantastic. The food is fresh, truly healthy, plant-based, and the portions are very generous. The staff is always kind and gracious, and the whole place has a relaxed, casual vibe--nothing pretentious. I do miss some of the variety of bowls they used to offer. Since I'm not big on "fake" meat (though the jackfruit is actually really good), I went with the veggie curry bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. Finally made a trip out to Tucson and I have been wanting to try this vegetarian spot ever since it was ranked number 1 restaurant in the USA by Yelp in 2024. They took our order when we walked in and we found lots of seating options even for our large group on a Saturday at 6pm. Yup this place lives up to the hype! I'm a meat eater but would not mind coming back to this restaurant over and over again! Unfortunately, I forgot exactly which tacos I picked they were, but the cashier was nice enough to give me two different ones after I mentioned that I'm not a big fan of spicy food. That was a good choice, because the one with brown meat was my first choice and that was much spicer between the two. The green one, I devoured, loving its mild taste. I was happy that this Latin restaurant had options that sensitive diners like myself could enjoy. I was also gifted with complimentary appetizers, including chips with salsa & guac, along with a bowl of soup. I also tried their Tumerico lemonade that had a little kick of spice than a normal lemonade; I enjoyed it way more than I expected. It's the type of drink that taste better as you consume it, and I was tempted to buy another to take home. The dining area didn't feel cramped at all, and there was a station for more sauces we could put on our food. Of course, I didn't indulge, but the option was nice. There were two gender-neutral bathrooms, which is where I noticed that the walls were covered in paintings for sale. Throughout the restaurant, there were an array of local paintings that guests could pay for; my friends chose one off the wall and all they had to do was pay through Venmo and show the cashier that they were keeping the item before leaving. That's a great way to increase business and support artists in Tucson. I enjoyed my meal (jackfruit tacos), but everything was less flavorful than I thought it would be. Even the rice and beans were boring. The salsas were just ok. Some things were oversalted, but more salt doesn't add flavor or complexity. It's good, not great. If you're vegan it's probably about as good as it gets. We had chorizo with potato plate and I got the Sonoran barbecue plate. The chorizo with potato plate was totally fine, there were not any specific stand out flavors, everything just kinda mushed together. The Sonoran barbecue plate was also fine, beans and rice were totally flavorless but the plant based meat was interesting, nothing was bad however it was all very uniform with no variation to flavor or texture. Well, I'm not sure this place needs another five star Yelp review it's going to get one. When we arrive, the staff was excellent at making recommendations and the food is spectacular. Met a friend here for dinner. It was my first time and it had been a while since my friend had eaten here. The first thing that caught my eye before the giant chalkboard menu was the display case of cakes. So it's a you go in, stand in line and place your order then get a sign with a number that you place on your table kind of place, like Flower Child or Corner Bakery for you California folx. I ordered the al pastor taco place with 2 jackfruit taco and beans and rice. For my drink I chose the turmeric lemonade and, of course, I got me a matcha tres leches cake to go. The flavoring on the first taco was so hot my face was sweating. It was a little uncomfortable because I didn't feel like I was enjoying my food and couldn't concentrate on the conversation I was having. The 2nd taco was less drenched in sauce and I could actually taste some of the sweetness of the jackfruit. If it hadn't been for the lemonade i would have not been happy with the level of spice. And I can take hot. (It's 2 hours later after eating and my tongue is still tingling a little). I did clean my plate. The beans and rice were delicious. The service was good. Our food came out quickly. Not meat Mexican food is not cheap. $32 for everything before tax. I can feed 3 people at my favorite Mexican place for this amount. The parking in this area is atrocious. It's great that this intersection is thriving with business but someone needs to do something about accommodating more vehicles. Would I come here again? Took my Vegan wife for a little Tucson getaway. I myself and Plant-Based. Frankly we've grown weary of the fact that almost all Vegan restaurant option center on Mexican or "comfort food" (which we translate to junk vegan). The high reviews for Tumerico was enough to compel us to give t a try. Right off, we loved the vibe, artsy, clean and un-pretentious. Staff was kind and consultative. We ordered the Mole and a Taco trio special. The salsa bar was immaculate and I especially like spicy so the spicy one was just ridiculous. I practically drank it. The Mole was so rich with deep and nuanced flavors. It was a big serving and I thought we'd take some leftovers but it was just too delicious to not finish. The tacos as well were flavor bombs. The only miss was the dessert, Vanilla cake didn't knock out socks off and we took half home, but something in the food chemistry made it somewhat disintegrate. I really love the way they prepare their jackfruit carnitas here. It seems that they dry the unripe green jackfruit completely from its juices before cooking with it which contributes to a better texture and flavor. My favorite is the al pastor burrito. It's spicy (spice varies day to day a bit) and really flavorful. It has beans and rice (the proportions seem to fluctuate daily) I get it a la carte and it comes with a salad since I don't like the rice here and only like their refried beans (They alternate between refried pinto and black beans and I find the black beans REALLY bland) . The refried are good on days they have those: I really wish they just always had the refried beans as I find their black beans to be surprisingly really bad and flavorless. I also found their pozole soup really lacking. Regardless, when knowing what to order, I think the food is delicious. I love their jackfruit carnitas tamales too and the cuban burrito or taco. The al pastor burrito is hard for me to pass on though! It's counter order casual. Note that their crema is made with cashews. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good.
