Our waiter was nice, the shrimp rolls were yummy, but that's about it. The thai iced tea was undrinkable, way too sweet. The tom kha was almost inedible, also way too sweet. My masaman curry had a good broth, but the onions were barely cooked and for some reason the potatoes had been fried before being added to the curry. My bf's pad thai wasn't bad, but again too sweet. We used YELP to find this place on a trip from Detroit to Grand Rapids. Thumbs up to YELP!! The place is nothing special inside, but who cares about that. It was clean....the bathrooms were also very clean. We had lunch on Saturday. I had the pad pak with chicken, my wife ordered the "make your own" dish, which was egg plant in curry sauce with veggies and rice noodles. Both dishes were excellent! Egg plant was cooked just right. We ended up going back the next day for dinner, right before heading back to Detroit. I will post a couple photo's of the dishes we ordered. Wait staff was nice both times. I would strongly recommend this place to locals and people heading to Grand Rapids. You can do lunch for TWO people under $20, dinner is not much more. read more

They put egg in their drunken noodle, and it was devoid of sauce. It only had oil on it. When I called to explain that their online menu was inaccurate they were rude. I called for take-out and they said roughly 20 minutes which is longer than the typical wait time for Thai in my opinion but, not a big deal. A couple of friends and I stopped in for lunch the other day after attending the Top Chef demonstration downtown and had a pretty excellent meal. Service was prompt, our server amiable, and the food delicious. The free hot and sour soup that was brought out for us gave me pause for a moment, because I wasn't crazy about its gelatinous consistency. The spring onions and bamboo, however, tasted extremely fresh and this got me excited or my entree. I ordered the Pattani curry with tofu (spiced "Hot", despite a warning from our waitress) and it was absolutely delicious. A rich, complex array of fresh spices and vegetables that played wonderfully off the slightly sweet creaminess of the coconut milk in the curry. The cashews, which were perfectly roasted were a nice addition to the dish. Also worthy of note was the tofu, which was prepared in a manner with which I wasn't previously familiar; it seemed to be twice fried (just a guess) because it had a really enjoyable crunchiness to it that complemented the dish nicely. My two friends got the Peanut Noodle Curry and, I believe, the Drunken Noodles. The Drunken Noodles in particular were a big hit and were finished by my friend before I had a chance to steal a forkful. The Peanut Curry looked tasty as well, and would probably be a safe bet for anyone unfamiliar with more traditional Thai flavors. I should note that my "hot" dish was definitely deserving of the descriptor. This was a big plus for me as I so frequently try to order my food spicy only to be stifled by an incredulous cook staff. In the past I've done well asking for my food to be prepared as if for a relative, but in this case it was unnecessary. Sweat? Check. Runny nose? Check. Look of slight concern on my friends' faces? Check. These are all signs of a Thai restaurant deserving of my praise. The waitress mentioned that even medium was rather spicy, so for those of you with a low spice tolerance be warned. Other than the (free!) soup, this was really a stellar dining experience and I am happy to finally have a go-to Thai spot in the city. I will definitely be going back soon and look forward to trying more of Angel's heavenly Thai fare. read more

This great little place opened up in December of 2009 and I had a chance to try it out last week. The prices are reasonable, the service was very attentive. They're also open late friday/saturday nights in case anyone wants some spicy thai food to top off a night out at the clubs. Atmosphere: It's a simple, cozy place with booths and tables and some tasteful, bright decor on the walls. It was empty when we were there so it was a nice, quiet dining experience. Food: I can't say that I'm an expert on Thai food but everything we ate was excellent. We started out with some Tom Yum soup (great) and some crispy tofu slices served with a sweet/nutty house sauce to dip in - they were excellent. I had drunken noodles which were delicious; I like spicy food and had the "medium" level of spice (which was plenty spicy so fair warning). When I go back I'd really like to try their curry dishes (one of the other diners was very happy with the one she'd ordered). They apparently have three types of curry sauce for their dishes; red, green and yellow. The entree menu breaks down into four basic areas: "Main Dishes," "Curry Dishes," "Noodle Dishes," and "Fried Rice" dishes. There's a really wide variety so virtually anyone will be able to find something they like. I really wanted to like this place -- my husband and I love Thai food and are always keen to support local businesses. We came to Grand Rapids from NC and tried this place based on the good reviews. I generally don't leave bad reviews, but the food here was just not good. I got the drunken noodles expecting the usual wide rice noodles (it's why I LOVE the dish). Instead, it was served with just regular noodles and it had 0 flavor. Really, it didn't taste like anything. I even asked for it a little spicy, but couldn't taste a bit of any spice. My husband got the Pad Thai, and it wasn't much better. He asked for it 8 out of 10 spicy, and I couldn't taste any spice in it either. I couldn't eat more than a few bites of my dish. : ( I hope they maybe read this review and improve the food, I would love for this place to be successful but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as is. read more

It's a pretty small establishment, but located right in heartside Grand Rapids next to Rosa Parks Circle. My only complaint would be that it is fairly over priced. I haven't had the best of luck the last few times I have been here...got take out, was told 20 min and it was 35 minutes. Someone else came in, placed an order & got their food before I did. Ate in another time and the server treated us like we were an imposition. Pretty much threw our menu's on the table and walked away. Barely said anything to us the entire meal. If the people at the table next to us we wouldn't have gotten straws - she threw our thai iced tea on the table and ran away ignoring me when I tried to ask for straws. I have eaten at many Thai restaurants around the country and a few overseas, and Angel's has already become one of my favorites. It's not flashy like many other well-known restaurants, but it does the core basic dishes right. Everything is fresh and well prepared and seasoned. This place makes me feel like I am a guest in the home kitchen of a really good cook, with a Thai mom or grandmother serving up homemade recipes. I will be back many times. read more

I thought all of my cravings for Thai food in downtown GR could be resolved with a bite from one of Angel Thai's various entrees, and so I ordered the pad prik and thought: "OH MY GOODNESS, THIS IS NOT AUTHENTIC. IT'S JUST AVERAGE, BUT I'LL CONTINUE EATING IT, BECAUSE I PAID FOR IT..." and something about starving kids in Africa, and how I should never waste food. But, aside from that, Angel Thai is a great place to go to in downtown GR. They have great lunch specials and a wide selection of dishes in their menu. They also don't disappoint in the heat factor--something that's much missed from other Asian or Southeast Asian restaurants. The service there is a bit spotty, but given that I'm always there whenever there's a crowd, which is expected--they're forgiven. It's a great restaurant to go to within the area, but if you're looking for something authentic, you won't find it here. Though, thai food is as good as it gets at Angel Thai in GR. read more

Really good thai food. I ordered curry pad thai and crab rangoon; the crab rangoon actually tasted like crab meat, which impressed me. And the curry pad thai was a yellow curry with really tender, savory chicken, noodles, peanuts, onions, ect. All of it was cooked perfectly; nothing mushy going on. There's nothing worse, IMO, than a lump of mushy rice noodles. The service was a tad touch and go. We went during Art Prize, so it was crazy busy. We still got our good within a reasonable period of time, although it wasn't speedy. One complaint, I ordered a 3 on the 1 to 10 spice scale and it was pretty darn spicy. I drank 2.5 glasses of water to get through the meal which was otherwise very tasty. Now, I am a baby about spice, but really a 3 should be pretty mild I would assume. read more

Definitely my go-to place for Thai food. My favorite is their peanut curry noodles, which is well balanced with flavors. Portion size is good, i usually end up with enough leftovers for lunch the next day. They add quite a bit of spice in their dishes, so be sure to order accordingly! They try hard and are pleasant but don't seem completely organized and can lose track of which tables are ready for their checks. Don't let that deter you. They accommodated my special spice request quite nicely. They use a heat scale of 1-10. Start out a little low - we found a 3 to be more than adequate for moderate. The first thing you notice when you walk into Angel's Thai Cafe is how small and narrow it is. There are about 5 booths and 7 tables, all jammed into a standard strip mall space. Despite that, the place does not feel cramped. It is well-lit and the cool blue color scheme plus front windows help it seem more comfortable. We grab a booth toward the back after being told to seat ourselves anywhere we like. There are perhaps 4 other tables/booths occupied. We peruse the menu while water arrives. It is extensive, with signature dishes on the back. My heart leaps with joy because it is all Thai food; none of the double-duty you see from other restaurants who try to incorporate Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai, then do all of which rather poorly. Nope, this is just Thai, focused and specialized. I order a pot of Jasmine Green tea and coconut water then we put in for a couple apps before the entree. Our first appetizer arrives: crispy tofu. Little triangles of lightly breaded tofu with a side of sweet-and-sour sauce. The exterior is crunchy, leathery, and minor discoloration on the edges makes us think it may have been frozen. No matter; once dissected and daubed into sauce, this minor toughness dissolves into spongy goodness. The second app, crispy rolls, comes with a bowl of sauce that looks like sweet-and-sour but has a bite, both vinegar and spice. The rolls are tight bundles filled with minced chicken, veggies and cellophane noodles. Snapped open, dipped into sauce, they become a savory explosion of Asian cuisine. Reluctantly, I let Juliet have the last one. For my entree, I order my new favorite Thai dish: Gang Massaman. A quick check of Wikipedia suggests a different spelling but the elements are the same, including potatoes, coconut milk, peanuts, meat (of your choice), onions and curry paste. I discovered Massaman in Utah during a business trip, after a friend recommended it. I've been in love ever since, though it's difficult to find the same level of quality here in Grand Rapids. A certain other over-rated restaurant up the road delivered a sub-standard version to our house and other places have simply botched it. Without a doubt, this was the finest Massaman I've had since Utah. A heaping plate of steaming chicken seasoned with red pepper flakes, swimming atop the traditional pile of potato curry. I dig in, scooping half the dish onto white rice. Ordinarily I order beef, but this time I tried chicken. Also, Angel's allows you to select the level of spice. I went for medium, having learned my lesson on a previous visit that medium-hot was a bit much, and was very happy. The sweetness of the peanut and coconut milk mediates the heat of the hot curry and red pepper flakes. Although some diners might blanch at the thought of filling out a recipe with potatoes, they soak up the hot-sweet sauce and become addictive distractions from the still-crunchy onions and lean chicken breast. At the end of the night, we are stuffed. Food remains on our plates and even though there's no room in our bellies, our hands continue to ladle just one more bite into our mouths. We have a new favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. read more

I had take out, but after walking in to pick up, I wouldn't hesitate to eat in. Small, sparse, but clean dining area; pretty typical of a quick Asian food joint. The girlfriend and I split a crab Rangoon, and had 2 drunken noodles in chicken and beef, respectively. I would pit the Rangoon at well above average, with really crispy wantons even after the 15 min it took to get them home; highly recommend. I am really picky on my drunken noodle texture, and there was nothing here to really impress. I like a little 'bite' to the noodle, and these were pretty soft. Next time I go here I'll probably get a rice dish. The sauce was fine, though nothing special. I eat HOT food, and was surprised how hot the "hot" was. I will get medium in the future; as it took me three beers to cool the burn. Portions were sufficient and what you'd expect. Oddly, for some reason, the sweet and sour sauce tastes particularly good. At $32 for 2 noodles and a Rangoon, I thought it was a little rich, but I guess that's probably attributed to the central downtown location. Since it's only a few blocks from my girl's place, I'm sure I'll go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Overall, the noodles deserve 2 stars, but the Crab Rangoon gave it the bump up to 3. read more

Ordered the Pad Thai with chicken which says it has sprouts, green onion and egg in it. There were NONE of those in it. Just a bunch of noodles and a couple pieces of chicken. We got our order to go so I didn't realize this until I got home. Very disappointed and will not order from them again. Crab rangoons were good though. read more

My wife gets Tai Iced Tea from every Tai food restaurant we eat at, and the Tai Iced Tea she got from this place had to be sent back and removed from our check. She very seldom sends things back because she hates to waste and she feels bad about complaining. But she wouldn't touch this tea so I insisted we let our server know. Our server was very polite and professional, helping to balance our overall lackluster eating experience. My food was overly salty, and my wife didn't like the chicken in her meal. It tasted gamey to me. For appetizers we ordered chicken wings and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon was good, but the wings weird; they almost tasted like soap. Strange. Perhaps they "wash" their chicken in chemicals. They look a lot better than they taste. Again, we had to abandon them. read more

I am a big fan of Thai food and have been to many Thai restaurants in town. I went to get lunch with a friend and got curry pad thai with tofu. (Last time I came, I got Chicken pad thai, and felt like chicken was not cooked) The vegetable soup that gave us was good (maybe little too much pepper), especially with this weather. Curry pad thai was great, but I only had couple pieces of tofu which was quiet disappointing.
