I ordered five pies for my crew and a side of meatballs for myself. I asked for the pizzas to be well done but they were not. The meatballs were supposed to have mozzarella on them with marinara sauce but there was no cheese. Nothing was bad, but nothing was memorable either. If I had a pizza shop in the Bronx, I would want to be known as the best or even very good. Step your game up, your not in middle America, it's NYC. The Lunch Spot This place is.... awesome ! If you work by here and prefer hot foods for lunch, you have hit the goldmine. The meatball hero looks great, and the size is monster. The standard is $5.50 for a hot variety - and parmigiana is always included - it's not even a question . I respect that. And the steam tables have great looking options like fried whiting, fried shrimp, sauteed pastas, chicken francese, meatloaf, and broccoli rabe. You could eat here every day for 3 weeks and never tire of it - or 2x a week for the rest of your employment. But you didn't buy this guide for a listing of lunch specials . The slice is also impressive. The bottom is tough with character. The sauce is zesty with a nice grease quotient. There's only a bit of orange drip, but not enough to make the plate mad. And it's cheesy. It gets sloppy. Sloppy enough to burn your mouth with the mix of cheese and sauce. This is a slice that comes alive. Curiously, there's not much char and nothing exceptionally notable about it overall. They probably don't use San Marzano tomatoes or 00 flour. There aren't even 70-year old pizzaiolos making the pies. But for some reason it's wholly enjoyable to eat their slice. There's no clear reason, but it's excellent. Now, if a paper claimed this #1, it wouldn't be a travesty. Not like it was when La Pentola was named number one years ago. Opened: 2005 Distinction: Probably one of the best lunch spots for American food in the borough. It's a 2-story establishment. The first story is clamoring with orders and a kitchen, and the upstairs is an oasis with around 10 4-seater tables. They do a lot of business, mostly take-out, and they deserve it. read more

The only legitimate establishment near where I work. Everything else is fast food or just straight up terrible. You can get a plate of delicious hot food for $5, a great, fresh hero or wrap for $5.50. Everything that I've had here I have enjoyed thoroughly. All the food is cooked with quality ingredients and packs a serious amount of flavor in an amazingly bland neighborhood. You can take out or sit up stairs and hang. At first glance, Angie's Cafe is just another pizza dive in the Bronx. Really, it's not. It has a very down home where-everybody-known-your-name vibe that I like. The same people are always working there, and if you come in more than twice, they make sure to say hello to you and ask how you are doing. That's not required of a good restaurant, but honestly... it doesn't hurt. They make me feel appreciated and I really like spending money here. A lot of Angie's is just convenience; they are pretty close to my work. It's probably a 2-3 minute walk. It's also very cold in there; I don't think they heat the place. I think the just leave the pizza oven on the whole time and that's the heat through the winter. It kind of makes the upstairs seating area somewhat undesirable, but for me it feels like a great place that a scene from a Tim Burton movie would take place. It's cold and it's dark. I actually generally like that type of enviornment when I'm eating. The food isn't the best Italian you'll ever have; but it is the best I've had out of East Harlem (excluding Patsy's) and definitely out of the southern Bronx. I was ordering a chicken parm sandwich that kept disappointing me, but now I stick with sausage slices on a hero... and it truly saved the day. If you are in Mott Haven, this is a place to check out. The pizza here is very good and definitely several grades above your typical corner shop, but what I really love about Angie's is the restaurant quality Italian dishes they serve fresh daily. I recently ordered the stuffed tilapia w/crab meat and a side of vegetable rice, and was more than satisfied with everything. Their proportions have always been very generous (the dish I was served was large enough for two people) but they even threw in a fairly large complementary loaf of soft garlic bread. And despite my order being literally the last serving of the day (it was past 6pm and they were already prepping for closure) the food tasted amazing for the ridiculously low price I paid. All in all, Angie's small selection of buffet style Italian dishes puts bigger restaurants like Giovanni's to shame by offering equally great food for way less money. read more

Best lunch specials in the area! Had the shrimp parm with mashed potatoes and yummy mozzarella cheese for about 7 bucks (not including drink). One downside is that the delivery can take a while but thankfully it is close enough to my job that I'll opt to take a walk and get it myself. Only other downside is that sometimes all of the seafood options are not available or sometimes they they run out.The order is always ready when I arrive, I've never had to wait (I call it in). All the folks are very nice. There is also a second floor area if you want to sit and enjoy your food which is nice and clean with a public restroom. read more

This small family run restaurant is one of the culinary jewels of the South Bronx. You don't come to Angie's for the decor. (Sparse cafeteria style seating is available upstairs). You come to Angie's for the food. The pizza is very good. What really makes this place special are the hot dishes. The fish or chicken dishes are outstanding. I have eaten here a dozen times. Eat the Grandma Pizza. I came for a burger since the guys at a mechanic's nearby said it was the best in the neighborhood. They were out of hamburgers but I had a slice of the Grandma Pizza. Now, I'm not a native and this isn't a typical New York slice but it is, in recent memory at least, the best pizza experience I've had. It boasts a thick crust with an oily, crispy bottom (usually not my favorite), very fresh and tangy tomato sauce, basil and fresh mozzarella. That's all. And, man, is it good. It's kind of "bright" with its dominant, sprightly tomato taste - but it's still salty and the cheese is creamy. If you like this kind of thing then you'll love this slice. The atmosphere isn't anything special and a lot of the food ranges from run of the mill to bad (vegetable soup, bagels...) Even so, now that I live outside of SoBro I often consider a trek to Angie's, getting a slice of Grandma Pizza and getting back on the train. read more

The one star reviews I just do not understand,but when you see who posts than you know that they do not probably understand Italian cooking as well. Angies makes great food. It is one of the best places in the area. I love their fish dishes, stuffed chicken ,and eggplant parm. They make about 3 different pastas, rice, and vegetables each day. There is only one problem with Angies, they have the WORST delivery service. Apparently they have only one delivery guy. Even when you call ahead, you wait forever.
