My Experience at Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic…read more On October 26, 2023, I brought my beloved cat, Higgins, to Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic in Santa Fe for what was supposed to be a routine dental procedure under anesthesia. He was entrusted to the care of Dr. Jonathan Baldys. Later that afternoon, Higgins was released without a consultation from the veterinarian. He appeared to be drooling, which I was told was normal, but he soon began gagging and acting distressed. I also noticed a strange "crunchy" sensation in his back. When we followed up the next day, we were told that Higgins had not received subcutaneous fluids, contradicting what I had suspected. That same day, Higgins was examined again by Dr. Baldys, who diagnosed him with subcutaneous emphysema caused by a torn trachea, apparently due to intubation during the dental procedure. He attempted to relieve the trapped air under Higgins' skin and sent us home with medication. Despite my continued efforts to stabilize Higgins and multiple visits to RoadRunner Veterinary Clinic and Gruda Veterinary Hospital over the following week--including oxygen therapy and emergency interventions--Higgins' condition deteriorated. He died from cardiac arrest on November 5, 2023, just ten days after what should have been a routine dental cleaning. I filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine, in which I alleged that Higgins' death was the result of negligence, incompetence, or malpractice. The Board ultimately dismissed the complaint. I respectfully disagreed with that outcome and remain deeply concerned about the standard of care my cat received. Higgins was a loving, trusting companion, and he suffered immensely in his final days. I remain heartbroken and haunted by the fact that his death may have been preventable. If you're considering Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic, I encourage you to ask detailed questions, seek second opinions, and make the decision that is best for your animal. I will never get Higgins back, but I hope that sharing my experience may spare someone else the pain we've experienced.

He had had a very delicate operation to repair a tricky break in the tibia bone of his back right leg. They had installed a metal brace and screws and wire. Very expensive and extremely important to contain the cat so he would not harm the leg while it is healing. I had an out of state family funeral to attend and was in a panic. I googled something like post-surgery in home care in Santa Fe. Her website plus one other Pet Hospital came up. I reviewed her website, noticed how well it was designed with attention to detail (very important) and that she was licensed via the city of Santa Fe for animal care. I never even felt the need to review the other website. My cat, named Kitty, needed 24/7 care and someone with experience handling medications and delicate post-surgery care. I emailed her of my upcoming needs, as it was late on a Sunday and I needed to leave in 4 or 5 days. We spoke the next day and went over all my concerns. As we spoke it was so obvious that she was very experienced in the post-surgery needs of an animal. Additionally, she demonstrated a deep understanding of relating to the cats and dogs she takes care of. If you want to just have Irina go to your home and feed and water and clean up after your pets while you are away that is of course possible also. Irina sent me wonderful photos and reports everyday of Kitty. I felt completely confident that Kitty got excellent care and attention...complete with a heated rug his first day there to comfort him as he adjusted to this new environment. I could go on and on but don't want to make this any longer. In short, all pet owners in Santa Fe, are lucky to have Irina the Pet Angel of Santa Fe as an option for animal care when the need arises. Thanks, Irina for your love and devotion to my Kitty and all cats and dogs. Mary BB

My first advice... put your dogs on the CareClub plan! Both of my dogs are on the monthly plan…read moresince they were puppies! It's extremely helpful having peace of mind knowing their regular exams (and even most urgent visits) have been covered, as well as their vaccines and fecal tests. Knowing I don't have to come out of pocket every visit is a good feeling. Other than paying for medications and preventative stuff... this CareClub is a lifesaver! As for the hospital and staff... they have always been amazing!! I have a Cane Corso and Olde English Bulldogge... and the staff and docs have always been great to my giant boys. They seem to understand breed specific needs (like the proper age to neutered a cane corso) and knowing that my bulldog shouldn't go under sedation unless absolutely necessary. My corso had his neuter, gastropexy (stomach surger recommended for giant barrel chested breeds), and cherry eye removal all done at VCA. The surgeries were all successful, and recovery time was easy. I attribute this recovery magic to the amazing surgery team's skill and care. My bulldog has had skin issues due to food and environmental allergies (that was fixed with an allergy shot. GET THIS SHOT IF YOUR DOG HAS RANDOM ALLERGIES!) and recently a ruptured cysts. The doctor fully understands what cysts are scary and which are common. I wasn't forced to do some random tests or surgery for removal. I have had bad experiences with Vets in the past. But never at VCA. Pet care is expensive... but VCA has always provided upfront estimates and NEVER has my payment been on the high end of that estimate. I'm always surprised it turns out to be on the low end. Also, they TEXT!! When I send a message about a concern... they respond all the time, and fast!! VCA is great! The docs and staff are great! They know my dogs needs, temperaments and breed specifics!

There has got to be some sort of corporate push on VCA affiliate veterinary clinics to upsell everything, from procedures to products, because I've never experienced anything like it with any other vet practice. Be canny when discussing procedures like canine teeth cleanings (ask the vet if your dog has visible plaque / tartar buildup), and make sure you get the FULL cost estimate ahead of time before you schedule anything. Discuss each thing they want to prescribe and charge you for, as some may not be strictly necessary. If you feel your dog needs the cleaning, get estimates from a couple other vet clinics. Another tip: if getting a heart worm test and a prescription for flea & tick meds (eg, Simparica Trio), before leaving the office be sure to request a written copy of the prescription (they "don't provide digital copies" or via the VCA app) so you can use it at Chewy.com or other online pet pharmacy service for the exact same product at a lower price. I gave 2 stars because the vets are okay, but not super personable. We saw so many different vets over the years with this practice and never felt like we had an actual relationship with any of them. Add to that the weird upselling of unnecessary services and meds... Can you really trust them? And at those prices? No thanks. Our dog & cat deserve better and, honestly, so do we. But don't just take my word -- read the other negative reviews: is there an echo in here?

I have never once felt like one of the cats I fostered was going to anything other than the perfect home for their individual personality. Their care and concern shines through everything they do. As a foster, I appreciate their excellent communication and the way they will line up vet appointments as needed. I have been to their facility many times and it is always sparkling clean and cared for by kind and friendly folks.
