The ER vet told me if she's never turns blue or sounded like she was struggling to breathe she was fine, totally dismissing the reason I was at the ER with her in the first place. I still had to pay for the visit, of course. I had actually already scheduled the surgery through Metairie Small animal Hospital for the next week, but cancelled the next day based on his diagnosis. It's now months later, and my poor girl is still struggling to breathe. She chokes on her water when she tries to drink, overheats during exercise, wakes up multiple times during the night because she stops breathing. Why did he have to make me think I was crazy? He didn't observe her throat under sedation to really know anything. I went to the ER for a serious concern that night, and was turned away and told I was crazy. It really makes you second guess surgery for your pup. But, after much more research and observation, I know she needs the surgery. Problem now is she needs to be evaluated under sedation again, which costs more money, and she may have damaged more parts of her throat that can't be repaired. Why would I want to go back again?

The first thing doctor Connor O'Brien said to me was that we "need to have a quality of life…read morediscussion," as though it was a possibility that we might put my dog down. She was not that ill. Days earlier, she was playing and enjoying long walks. She was only dehydrated more than likely from a bad tooth. I told Dr. O'Brien that she had several times in the past refused to eat and got dehydrated and bounced back after a few days of rest. This time lasted a day longer and she needed fluids. That's all she needed - fluids and perhaps an anti-nausea med to give her the strength to get up and have something to eat or drink. He gave her an opioid sedative which is terrible for dogs, I learned later. But the thought behind the decision to give her a sedative is inherently flawed. How was she supposed to get up to drink or eat while on a sedative? It was sure death and that is what Dr. O'Brien did to my dog. When I brought my dog in she was lifting up her head and responsive to my voice. When we left she was all but brain dead. I was told the opioid would wear off in a few hours, but 12 hours later, and she never regained any meaningful consciousness. She then died, more than likely due to the last 12 hours with nothing to eat or drink, severely dehydrated and with opioids in her system, which was entirely unnecessary. I told Dr. O'Brien that, in the past, a little cortisone usually did the trick and had her eating and drinking and living fully again, but I left the decision up to him. I should not have. From that very first sentence about "quality of life" I should have been wary that Dr. O'Brien wanted to put my dog down. And die she did. A few days earlier she was running and playing, enjoying snack and walks and cuddles. She only needed some hydration. Instead she got a lethal dose of pain medicine that she did not even need. I should have stood my ground and made it *my* choice. People, STAND UP AND ADVOCATE for your loved ones. Some doctors are sh----.

I called first thing the next morning and Donna scheduled me right away. While there Donna was so helpful and the receptionists made sure I was greeted. Our technician, Jennifer was very nice and handled Claudette very well. (Claudette is a scardy dog when it comes to the vet. The moment she realized what was up, she tried to leave!) Dr. Allen was great too and very patient. Within 30 minutes, we were finished! Happily Claudette is fine. She has some medications and her mother is now at ease. However, she may have a new fashion assessory, a cone. The hospital is clean and inviting. Also the exam rooms are very well lit and not intimidating. What I really love is that the exam table is also the scale!!! The scale lifts from the floor! Needless to say, I was very impressed as I had not been there since before Katrina. not even 1 star my cat was given a rabies shot without explaining to us the possible side effects…read morefor her age. and once after receiving the rabies shot she slowly started to decline we had taken her back and they didn't even do a assessment of her ("no examination") they wanted to do blood work and x-rays which would have cost more money than what we had already spent. they suggested euthanasia! we ended up taking her too another veterinarian they did a full examination as well as blood work and x-rays for an extremely affordable amount! they had given us iv fluids as well as an appetite stimulant and told us if we needed more don't hesitate to come back! that was 2 days ago as of right now she's eating drinking and using the bathroom! the name of this veterinarian is harahan veterinarian pets and services to whom i would recommend everyone i know to go to if you love your pets. my cat is 16 years old and doing wonderfully since she received the excellent care from harahan veterinarian hospital. i would like to thank them for their excellent personal care and services. .

One huge bonus that not many people realize: if you're traveling with two pets, they can be listed on one health certificate. That alone saved us time, money, and unnecessary stress. Before finding Chateau, I had reached out to several clinics and felt overwhelmed and unsure. The moment Summer answered my call, I felt confident we were in the right hands--and I was right. We arrived in France with zero issues. One very important tip for anyone traveling internationally with pets: yes, the health certificate must be validated within 10 days of travel, but your vet appointment should be scheduled at least one month before your departure. This allows enough time for the USDA to process, endorse, and mail everything back to you. Summer guided us through this timing perfectly. I also really appreciated that they had us test anti-anxiety medication before travel to ensure the correct dosage. Best advice ever. It made a world of difference knowing exactly what Chester needed--and to be clear, these are not tranquilizers, which are forbidden for international travel. We even had to recheck Chester in Paris for our connecting flight to Nice. He refused additional medication at that point but still did very well. There were no issues--no barking, no complaints from airline staff, and he remained calm throughout the entire process. He was understandably nervous by the time we picked him up in Nice, but he was completely okay. I was nervous about giving him medication in the first place, but testing it ahead of time and following their guidance truly paid off. Another thing worth mentioning: Chester is an anxious dog when it comes to vet visits. He's sweet--not aggressive--just scared. The team handled his exam and vaccinations with patience, calm, and confidence. They clearly know how to work thoughtfully with nervous animals, and that meant a lot to us. I also really appreciated that they offer happy visits, where you can stop in without an appointment just to help your pet feel comfortable with the vet and environment--no exam, no stress, just positive exposure. Beyond all of that, this is simply an outstanding veterinary office. Everyone is incredibly kind, organized, professional, welcoming, and knowledgeable--what more could you ask for? It's clearly a locally owned practice, not a corporate chain, and that shows in every interaction. I don't tolerate incompetence or discourtesy. I had one bad experience here when a new vet misdiagnosed my dog because she failed to pull a blood panel and I ended up taking her to MedVet for intense emergency treatment. That vet is no longer associated with the practice. I've found EVERYONE there, including receptionists, vets, and vet assistants to be entirely professional, courteous, friendly, and above all, very competent and caring for both the animals and their human clients. My current dog, Willy, is 17 and broke his leg. He had surgery to repair the break yesterday and is doing fine but, because of his age, they opted to keep him an additional day. I expect to pick him up this afternoon. That I agreed to have surgery on a 17-year-old dog should indicate my confidence in this practice. I've seen a couple of bad reviews and the only thing I can say is that these reviews are completely opposite to my experiences. As I indicated, I have no problem firing people if I find them rude or incompetent. My having continued to use the clinic for 15 years should speak volumes about my satisfaction.
