Get here now!!!! This food truck is tucked behind the able brewery so you can kill two birds with one stone - beers and bbq. I have read a ton of great press about animales and had to check it out for myself. Based on all the posted photos I knew I wanted to get the Sampler which comes with ribs, pork belly, sausage and a few pickles. We also got a side of the beet salad since we were sharing the platter. Everything was phenomenal and the perfect amount for 2 people. The ribs were my favorite. They fell off the bone, had some crispy skin and so juicy when they hit your lips. My husband liked the pork belly the best. It had a ton of savory flavors but naturally a little more fatty. The sauce they drizzle on top is a nice touch - little sweet but had some kick. The sausage was smokey and had cheese oozing out of the middle but the casing was a little tough to cut through and to chew. This was my least favorite of the sampler but still delicious. Was able to try Animales BBQ on my latest visit to Able Brewery. Two of us shared the sampler platter for $20 + added on a side of the coleslaw. The platter came with ribs, a sausage, pork belly and a few pickled veggies. From all the items on the platter - our favorite was definitely the ribs but everything was super flavorful. Our food was ready in just a few minutes and came out nice and hot. We really liked the coleslaw but it is definitely very peppery - so be aware if pepper is not a flavor your really enjoy. Another couple we were with also got the sampler platter - and the amount of food per plate definitely didn't seem consistent (we had 4 ribs, the others we were with only received 2). Although the flavor was great - I did struggle to find an item on the menu that gave me exactly what I wanted (e.g. the only way to order pork shoulder was on the $50 platter). The few individual entrees (sandwich, tacos) were ~$12/each, there is a $20 (1lb of meat) and $50 platter (3lbs of meat) and the sides are $4-5/each. read more

The parking situation is limited free street parking and there is a paid lot across the street (reasonable pricing). Second, the seating situation is outdoor picnic tables that are dedicated to Animales; but keep in mind you're fighting for seating between ABLE and an ice cream shop. So, be prepared to eat out of your car or on the street. Third, if $12 for 3 tacos ($4/taco) sounds stupid expensive to you, then you shouldn't eat here. However, if you don't put a price on solid food, then keep reading. Tacos (only one kind) - Before you order a ton of these, know the portion of meat will put you to sleep. So, order one set, house them all and see how you feel. Amazing smoked meat, super hot and crispy tortilla with burnt crispy cheese. Just order them. Reg Ribs - Fall.Off.The.Bone. Eat it without the BBQ sauce, then with the BBQ sauce and be sure to eat the pickled veggies too. Again, just order it. Beef Ribs - Good, some would say melt in your mouth good, but I can't get past the price. Pork Belly - OMG, OMFG, just order it. Dip into sauce, put in mouth, done. The ribs were super tender, pulled right off the bone, and had a very peppery flavor. According to their Instagram, they simply salt & pepper them. They are very good and go well with their sauces. Chicken birria fried cheese tacos: YUM. While they're a little pricey for tacos, they are delicious. The homemade tortillas are given a layer of cheese and then fried on the grill. Absolutely genius, I tell you. The chicken is very juicy and flavorful, and they're topped with a garnishing of pickled onion and jalapeño. You wouldn't expect this level of tacos from a BBQ truck but here we are y'all. Pork belly bowl: good, but for $13 could have had more pork and more of... something else? It was really just a few pieces of pork, a bunch of slaw and a hard boiled egg. It was tasty, but I was left wanting more variety a la bowl style and less cabbage slaw. Some kind of starch or some grits could go a long way. Overall, Animales is certainly earning their Best BBQ in the Twin Cities accolade. Take your friends and check it out! read more

I love meats and I cannot lie . But for real, finally some decent BBQ in town. I didn't go in with a high expectation because you know this is not Texas or North Carolina. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised with their meats. Get the sampler if you want a taste of everything. I'm obsessed with their pork belly. Incredibly juicy and tender. Don't worry about the fat, just eat it because that's the best part. The sauce they put on it has some acidity so it helps cutting down the fattiness. Love the seasoning on the ribs. Hot gut is basically a cheese filled brat. I wish I had an hot dog bun to go with it . The star was their weekend special, beef cheek. So so so tender and garlicky. Wanted to go back for round 2 but the line was too long. Get there early because they tend to sell out by 6pm! read more

When people ask me where to go for BBQ in the Twin Cities Animales is one of two places I recommend! Jon and his crew pump out some amazing smoked dishes. My go to choices are their Salt and Pepper Ribs, Pork Belly, and Burgers. Served all summer and when its warm enough in the winter. With an ever rotating menu you can find what their serving and if they are sold out on their Instagram. Be prepared to wait a bit, but its definitely worth it to chow down on one of these plates. TLDR; worth the hype, absolutely delicious! Fast & friendly service I've been waiting to try Animales BBQ for months! Finally convinced my brother to pick some up because I really wanted to try the Birria tacos. The delicious crispy cheese that hold in the juices from the tender meat are chefs kiss* The pork belly and the ribs were so tender and juicy and not too salty. It tore apart easily and paired well with the sauces that were provided: butter-mustard bbq sauce and the house red sauce. The house red sauce was my favorite! My dad is usually pretty picky about his BBQ but loved Animales. I would recommend coming here to try it out at least once. Lived up to my lofty expectations! Reasonably priced and the best bbq I've eaten in MN. The sausage was my favorite with the pork belly a close second. Both incredible. Ribs were great, came right off the bone, but held up texture wise. They weren't sloppy / rubbery like some ribs that fall off the bone. But yet, somehow after all of that, the thing we all raved about the most was the pickled beet salad. Awesome BBQ in NE right out of a food truck. They have a pre order or walk up menu with a variety of options. My favorite is their Pork belly but the last time we were there they had beef cheeks on the menu instead. Those didn't disappoint one bit either. Animales Barbeque's food truck was located that day in an area of Minneapolis that seems to be undergoing some gentrification. The truck was parked between a brewery, and two of MN Nicecream's food trucks. We arrived just in time to order the last two of their cheddar, chive, and brisket biscuits, and boy do I feel lucky that we did! We also ordered a pound of the salt and pepper ribs. The portion size was plenty enough for two people and we really feel like we went in the right direction with our order. The ribs are hands-down the best ribs that I've ever had. I didn't even bother with the barbecue sauce that came with it, because the ribs were cooked to such perfection, that they didn't need any. I struggle with this review and the right words to describe the experience you get by eating Animales Barbeque. But, I will try. First, I had the pork belly and the tacos. I will start with the tacos. For 30 years I thought I didn't like tacos, then I learned I didn't like bad tacos. So for the past 3 years I've been searching for the world's best tacos. It has brought me far and wide but these are right up there with the shrimp tacos I ate at a roadside restaurant in Cactus, TX. To put it succinctly, they are amazing! Like you want to inhale them in 3 bites amazing but then are sad because you didn't take time to properly enjoy them. So full of meat, spice, and the glorious smoked taste that you will find them ridiculously addicting. Now on to the pork belly. This glorious meat melts in your mouth. It is so savory and good you will wonder how you will go back to eating normal meat again. For 32 years I thought I didn't like Barbeque. Then I went to Kansas City and I've been chasing anything as good as the burnt ends I've had there ever since. Now, I haven't had the Animales burnt ends yet, but after eating the divine goodness that is their pork belly, I'm certain their burnt ends will stack up to KC ones. My Twin Cities BBQ adventure takes me to Animales BBQ this week.... And last week.... And the week before that. If that doesn't make it clear, Animales is definitely one of my favorite BBQ spot at this time. Even better than Revival. Is it a hottake? Maybe. Am I being bribed but the delicious smoked beef cheeks? Definitely, I'm not to be trusted because of these sweet cheeks. Anyway. Animales is a BBQ food truck parked by Able Brewery (woah you can get a good beer with this). There's delicious BBQ and yumcious bowl of grits... But I'm here for the BBQ. My favorite, if it's not clear yet, is the beef cheek taco plate that have on the weekend as specials. Beside that, the ribs are divine and the sausage is explosive in flavor. But the beef cheeks... I've had beautiful, haunting dreams about them. They fatty, rich, and just everything you want in a brisket but infinitely better. I had a personal crisis after my first bite and they're now in the running for my last meal. Just. Get. Them. Finally, shout out to the meat tornado sandwich. It's a sammy Ron Swanson would be proud of... Not sure if they're still serviing but if they are... Get it. In closing... Animales... Very good food truck that does BBQ pretty well. Ribs-I'm a bit of rib snob and rarely order ribs out anymore as I prefer ones I smoke at home. While these are a little more tender than I prefer, they're very good. I don't even add the sauce they serve with them, and they just use S&P. Good ribs should stand on their own and these guys have some of the best pork ribs I've had in the metro. Pork Belly-Probably my favorite of sampler I had. Fatty, tender, hint of smoke. Sausage (hot guts)-It was good, not great. I wouldn't turn one down, but if I were to go back, I'd just order either ribs or pork belly, or 1/2 lbs of each. Biscuit-Biscuit of day was brisket and cheddar. Located in Abel's backyard, we were excited to try out some BBQ while enjoying a beer and some much needed sun. We got the sampler. We ordered and they said it would be ready in 3-4 minutes which was pretty accurate. On the one hand, it was nice to not wait but on the other, it was faster than going through a drive thru. The meat must've been sitting out for a while in the truck (hence why it was played so fast) because it was a little dry. Some of the meat was all fat and I had to stop eating it since it was upsetting my stomach. The sausage was decent and the salt and pepper ribs were alright. My favorite part was the little sauce that came with the sampler. I would dip just about any meat in that sauce! We also ordered a side of grits. It's brown sugar and butter. I would eat this stuff for breakfast. It's definitely on the sweeter side. At first I wasn't a big fan but as I worked my way through the bowl, it grew on me. This food truck is going to be a little more speedy than your average food truck since you're paying for meat so keep that in mind. The staff were great though! Very kind, quick, and did a great job at finding their customers to deliver their orders. They do prefer if you wait outside the truck since it's less than a 5 minute wait! read more

This is hands down the best bbq in the Twin Cities. The ribs have the perfect texture not too fall off the bone and just the right mouthfeel. The dry rub and smoke is perfect. They are so juicy my mouth is watering while I write this. Ditto on the pulled pork, brisket and sausage. I also really enjoyed both of the bbq sauce options. One being more tomato vinegar base and one being more on the mustard side of the spectrum. I like the pickles even I generally prefer a more intense vinegar bite to offset the rich fatty meat. Ok, my 2 star review comes because all of there BBQ is obviously cooked on a propane cooker, there was no smoke flavor no smoke ring at all. What they do is heat there BBQ in a smoker to make you think they really cook in a smoker. People who don't know, just don't know... I ordered the ribs, chopped pork, by the way cooked either in water or propane cooker absolutely no flavor at all. The pork belly was the worst I've ever had texture was horrible, gray in color and covered in grease. I've been all over the US for good BBQ and this is not one of them, far from it. I also think the reason they put slaw and pickles on the sandwiches is the meat has ZERO flavor. I'm not sure of the 4.6 star rating and don't care but I wouldn't waste my money again on there food. Quickly grabbed a burger here tonight as they were closing. The employees were nice enough to insist on making us a burger even though they were closing. I got a double burger with everything on it. It was crazy good- like insane. If you like spicy (but also flavorful) food I suggest getting the "spicy" add on, which includes jalapeños and jerk sauce. So I really enjoyed it. My dad is from Mississippi and I spent summers down in the good old Mississippi so I'd like to say that I know good Southern comfort food when I see and taste it. This is not good old southern comfort food but still good. I would say this is southern food with a spin on it. The grits are sweet as compared to my usual savory/cheesy ones I am used it. But still rather tasty. Also, the meat on the ribs was nice soft and tender. I always try the ribs without sauce first and they were nicely seasoned. The sauce/bbq is sweet not spicy at all (also half-African so my tastebuds might be not the usual...in spiciness). Not as good as my Uncle Nate's but good for a restaurant in MN. Also this is not a typical restaurant. This is a food truck that you can eat the food at outdoors (if warm enough) or indoors in Able Brewery which has tasty beer! I ordered the MONSTER sandwich which was labeled to give you the meat sweats! Much it gave me the "meat happiness" not sweats. Hahaha I finished the whole sandwich and ate some of the grits that I shared with my mother. The staff was nice and friendly too. Well, where do I start. First of all, I know BBQ very well, and when you see them taking finished product from the old Hickory smoker, which I considered one of the worst in the industry because it's automation, assisted cooker. They take the meat out of the propane cooker, wrap it in foil and then put it on the offset smokers so you think they've been smoked on a smoker.... Now they may....for an hour or so but they're clearly cooking their meat well ahead of schedule. This can be determined by the way, the gristle and fat is rendered. Anyone that's been doing it for a long time can clearly make that determination. Texture, color, and the lack of smoke is not in any of there meats. I had their BBQ today and I can tell you it's some of worst I've had. The pulled pork was undercooked, and there's an easy way to disguise that by chopping it up and mincing it to hide the toughness and under cooking of the meat. You can see the smoke ring, but there was no smoke flavor. It's clearly being pushed through with a steaming process with propane. Topping this is the pulled pork sandwich covered with a pile of coleslaw, pickles, and whatever else you put on the sandwich. Most people don't eat sandwiches that way unless you're from South Carolina. Let's move on to the BBQ ribs, extremely disappointed, camouflaged with a mediocre style rub with a little bit of heat and a small hint of sweet. Fall off the bone ribs in my opinion, is a form of overcooking and the meat was mushy. It's almost like a pot roast on a stick with horrible flavor. If anyone knows ribs, they should have a little bit of a tug. They wrap them in foil, drizzle them with vinegar or a highly loose sauce this causes them to over cook. Extremely disappointed in the flavor, (no smoke flavor) at all, because again, they're using the propane Assisted old Hickory smoker. We all know that propane has a certain % of moisture or water present which is why you will not get a smoke flavored piece of meat. Last but not least, the pork belly was nothing I've ever experience it was burned, tuff and over cooked and my tray was completely covered in grease. There was about a 1/4 of clear fat, hence propane cooker. They may throw a stick in there from time to time to get that small hint of smoke but 90% of what you're cooking with is propane. Now let me get to the burnt ends these were absolutely disappointing. No seasoning, gray and tasteless. They should be 1 inch cubes with brown sugar and seasoning is typically how these are smoked. I can go on and on, but if anyone knows anything about traditional BBQ, you will be disappointed. I can tell you right now, MINNESOTA IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF GOOD BBQ. When all you eat is in MN you will never know Great BBQ... Thank God they didn't have brisket. I would rather of eaten McDonalds for $40.00. read more

Hard to know what to say here. I am a KCBS certified BBQ judge and backyard bbq-er. I have been wanting to try this place after reading good reviews. (Actually, I don't like competition BBQ all that much, so that was definitely not what I was looking for.) On Thursdays they apparently don't have brisket or pulled pork. Too bad; I got a take-out sampler with a sausage, pork belly, and a couple of ribs. Everything was properly cooked with good "bite" on the ribs and the pork belly having the majority of the fat rendered. The rub on the pork belly was peppery and slightly sweet; a pleasant match for the meat. The rub on the ribs was kind of a non-event, although the smoke level was good. The sausage was, well, a sausage. The little cup of yellow sauce seemed to be just yellow mustard thinned with water. No thanks. Lots of good mustard sauces exist, including several in my fridge. I just about tossed the red sauce, assuming it was the usual boring stuff we get in every grocery store. That would have been a big mistake, as it had a strong spicy flavor (not hot spice, savory spice). I used it sparingly on the sausage. (Usually I am a no-sauce guy.) Best BBQ in town? No. Pretty darn good? Yes, particularly if your standard of comparison is mushy pork falling off the rib bones and drowned in the dreaded red sauce. I would put Animales on the same level as Q-Fanatic and maybe a tiny notch below what I have had at the Firebox Deli. But YMMV on different days and with different cooks. I have read that the Market BBQ is again open, this time on Lowry. Their ribs don't really compete in the same style category as the others mentioned here but they are probably my most favorite of all. I need to get over there. Animales repeat visit? Probably not. Definitely not in 10deg weather like yesterday. read more
