This shop is just an organized scalper. They recently visited a Bandai store and structured a purchase there to circumvent buy limits and gather a large amount of One Piece product only to put it on their own shelves at a lower quality (Bandai opens all the sealed boxes to discourage this exact practice) and a much higher price. Not only did they perform such a scummy act, but they were laughing about it to customers. This store also effectively forces you to buy a pack just to play in their events and frames it as a free pack even though you pay for it with your entry. On an entirely different but more concerning note, I have personally watched the owner and a female employee be incredibly rude and condescending multiple times to another male employee. read more

I love this place, I wish they had a larger space but with this economy Not just that, but the store area is very far away and like in the middle of nowhere. I am always in the look for family own places and small stores that sell anime and manga as well as any damn good official/inspired items. Last time I got a Demon Slayer Mug and LED light figure. Still works until this day! (Got it a year ago) I know some comments said the older man is rude and stuff but you truly have to be aware of cultural differences. What to some may seem as screaming and shouting in many cultures is the usual voice tone and volume. The younger assistant is definitely more approachable, I won't deny. Anyways, I found a lot of Yaoi/BL manga which I was very surprise about. I know the commonly known books stores are now distribute them too but they sticking to the "trendy" ones. While there isn't a whole section here, you can be sure to find other mangas of your liking such as Haikyuu, Bleach, Blood-C, Naruto and among others. My fav manga store!! They have such a large selection of manga it's overwhelming! So many old and cool finds while brand new and hard to find ones as well! You need to be wary of if the store is attending an anime convention, as they visit major conventions across the country and take almost all of their manga supply with them. I would suggest checking in with the store before going and getting unlucky with all their manga being gone. (It's happened to me before lol) I will say the help isn't the best at times, as they frequently do sorting and rearranging of inventory, but when not busy, all of the staff are very nice and will helpfully explain anything to you!! The location is a little uncomfortable, but it's not too bad and there is a really good restaurant next door! Also need to clarify: they don't only sell manga, they have a large variety of things like anime merchandise, art books, cds and dvds, posters, plushies, and lots of gaming/ trading cards! read more

Whatever money you agree upon will not be honored and when questioned about it the owner will tell you to take what he offers or take nothing and sue him for it. It turns out he also didn't pay ANYTHING as what he handed out in the dark as a check turned out to be a parking receipt instead. If you are looking for manga, this is the place to go - it has everything! All the stories you could ever want are there in rows and rows of books. It does not have a huge selection of other merchandise, such as figurines and plushies - but clearly specializes in hard to find manga. The owner is also really helpful if you have questions and tries to get you what you are seeking. I doubt any other place in the area has this depth of merchandise. read more

Do not shop at or work for this business. For starters, the place has a strange, pungent odor that the owner refuses to do anything about, and the books are either bent or covered in grime and dirt. That's not to mention the owner himself, who constantly has a foul odor emanating from him, to the point of it being a health hazard to the other staffers, as well as showing up to work completely disheveled, with his stomach exposed and wearing clothes with very noticeable tears in them. That's not even to mention his treatment of his employees, which is completely abysmal. In the time I was employed at this shop, I witnessed this man being a fellow employee to tears, then call her a bitch to her face. On top of that, the owner is infamous for abandoning employees at conventions, leaving them hundreds of miles away from home with no method of transportation available to them, which I also witnessed occur during my time employed for this business. This man is so infamous for his poor treatment of his employees that several google drive folders has been made to cataloging his vile, disgusting behavior, and I would give negative stars if possible. In conclusion, do not support the scumbag owner of this business, and please take it to other small businesses within the anime/manga niche that sport ethical business practices, who will not drive their employees to tears. Do not work or purchase from this store, owner mistreats employees. He invited me to work in San Diego. There was a simple miscommunication, and he reacted with yelling at me over the phone. I replied to him "yes sir" in a tone he disliked. After an altercation between us he decided to call me a fat, liar, and a bitch. I don't know who I was speaking with but it was a long haired man with a beard who was a bit heavier set, I've been in 2 times and dealt with this same person and every time I've been in there I felt like he was being extremely condescending and treating me like a criminal. The most recent visit when I went in I was behind one person in line and once that person was done at the register the man took one person before me stating they were ahead of me in line when they werent actually in line waiting like I was, I relented and let them go first but then the person behind the register ignored me and took someone else until I was left. While I was asking questions about different cards and accesories he was just treating me in a condescending way as if I couldnt afford what I was asking about or I didnt know anything about trading cards in general the whole time acting like they had better things to do than to deal with me. So, my 12 year old insists I "Yelp" the store, so here goes! Said 12 year is high functioning level 2 Autistic. He loves, loves his anime - Dragon Ball z in particular and is obsessive about it. It is the one thing that makes him happy at all times. However, very hard to come by. The people at other stores, won't name them here, have not been too kind or patient with his disappointment that they don't always have said Dragon Ball. We happened along this store and the staff, in particular a young lady who is always constant, is always pleases and even remembers him! Though he does come in about once a week. This store is like stopping by a old friends house and he loves it! And I love the way they treat him. He always finds something stopping in and even if he doesn't, he gets a warm smile and knows he will be welcomed back next week! The negative reviews here definitely not warranted! I remember when this store was located in Falls Church. This new location is right off interstate 95. So getting to this location in a timely matter depends on 95 having its usual traffic hiccups or two. The store front is gaudy and cluttered with sun damaged posters and literally random things stacked from the floor that was also using the windows as a support to be upright. As we entered, there was not much of an entrance. You literally stood next to the glass counter (also filled with random trash, cardboard and unorganized merchandise) and to my right was another counter filled with unopened and unsorted collectibles and merchandise. There were tons of clear containers filled with manga and other merchandise, probably still stored after coming back from an anime convention. The wire shelves were stacked with manga and the wall shelves had anime. It was pretty neat to see a completed manga/anime set. But sometimes the quality was hit or miss. Since they do go to anime cons, some of their products are man-handled and it shows. They did have figures and plushies, but again their condition (and exposure to the elements) was a hit or miss. This whole place was extremely small considering the loads of stuff they carry. Too bad I couldn't tolerate being there for more than 20 minutes and the reason why will be explained next. The day we went happened to be a "Yu-gi-oh" tournament day. There were 3 tables dedicated to table-top and card gaming. Already I can smell the neck-beard and the cringe arriving. I'm not trying to shame that culture and group of people. But just from being in the Otaku/anime/weeaboo scene, I know that demographic of people tend to be loud, entitled and cringe. I was right. I couldn't hear myself think or talk to my friends because the clerk working there was talking so loud with his buddies. It was so uncomfortable hearing their conversations about their anime waifus and theorizing about the timeline of an anime. Again, not trying to shame, but it was awkward as hell. This place wouldn't be so bad if they organized their things and had a dedicated/separate space for their "clients" to game. I won't be coming back here. Pulled up and saw some people outside waiting. Which was weird because the store opened at 12. Oh, the owner/manager whoever he is was late that's why. He came up looking very grumpy and unpleasant as if he didn't want to be there or he didn't want customers there either. A young employee named David held the door open and gracefully welcomed us in. Didn't stay very long, store was junky, cluttered, smelled very foul. It was complete chaos. David did check on us and asked if we needed any help. On the way out, the older guy who was late to work (I think David called him Steve) was talking rude as hell to David. Telling him to pick boxes up and get to organizing stuff. I mean he had the ugliest tone ever. I don't think that's any way to be speaking to the one person in there who knows how to deliver customer service. Don't waste your time coming here. This place is an absolute mess, I'm an avid anime fan but this place is worse than a sunday convention hall. I've been inside the store a couple of times and don't recommend going. The store is dirty and smelly it's almost unbearable. There isnt much space so its a small maze just to get to the manga. If you ever wondered why comic book stores were struggling to stay open then swing by Anime Pavilion and you'll have your answer. It suffers from all of the comic store cliches. 1) An apathetic staff that is more interested in hanging out with their friends than helping a customer purchase anything. 2) A claustrophobic store layout which feels more like someone's personal collection in a basement than an actual retail store. 3) A general distrust of anyone coming into the store who doesn't fit the mold of your typical "fan". I love anime and truly wanted to give this place a chance, but just like Compleat Strategist up the road, it failed on so many levels it's no surprise people are buying from the internet instead. read more

So I promised to review this place again after the change in ownership. I don't know why the employee responding to reviews on Yelp insists they're not under new management, because I had multiple store employees telling me they were. The good is that the store is a lot cleaner and better organized. They rearranged some of the seating and bookshelves, put in linoleum floors, and generally cleaned up a lot of the piles of stuff that had been lying around. The store looks a lot better and I found it easier to find things. I feel like maybe this store is getting a bad rap because while I'm sure they do have great stuff for anime and Yu-Gi-Oh, it doesn't seem like anyone that's interested in those things is on Yelp. Basically upon my return visits I still couldn't find a reason to come back to the store. The fact remains that this is basically a hang-out place for a small group of high school kids rather than an actual business. I think it's great that the store gives high schoolers a chance at a job, but I think you should expect a certain degree of professionalism from them. The kids are more interested in hanging out with their friends than running the store. I mean, who can blame them? What were you like at that age? But it doesn't make for a great shopping experience. When I tried to buy some Magic cards, one of the kids hanging out shoved his binder in front of me and started giving me prices for stuff, because apparently some of the friends have the owner's permission to use the store to sell their own cards. It was a good card and he gave me a fair price, but it did nothing to dispel my notion that the place was basically a club for these kids. The first few times I went, the employees were very professional, but unfortunately that wasn't the case upon my return visit. They're all in high school, and they acted like it. I heard more swearing than I have in any other store ever, coupled with a few lewd sex metaphors. It made me feel very uncomfortable, and definitely made me feel like this is someplace I would not want to take a young child. If you need something for manga or anime, then check it out, because it looks like they have a wide selection. Other than that, there's not really any reason to go to this store. read more

I am reviewing this store based on my experience bringing my 12 yr. old son to Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments for the last few years. For beginner tournaments on Sun. mornings this place is A-OK. You get a relatively safe environment for your kid to nerd-out and play with others of similar age and ability. The staff are young and in all honesty the store is sometimes 10-20 min late to open so we have spent time waiting. They do a pretty good job of keeping the older teen/strange-socially awkward-older-player types away from the young gamers which is a plus. They are strict about regulating trading so your young player wont get scammed out of valuable cards. The place is dark, dirty and cluttered. Boxes stacked to the ceilings and wire racks loaded with products that could easily fall over and bury anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time (code violation Im sure). The tournaments are obviously not their mainstay - selling at shows is. This place holds stock, helps employ young staff and is available for some local gaming fun - nothing more, nothing less... read more

Was wanting to get some cases for some basketball cards I've been clearing out from childhood and selling on eBay and also to fill my inner kid nostalgia of seeing what's new with basketball cards these days. This was the closest card shop to my house. I went in and was met by a literal troll of a person. He was rude, unwelcoming, and seemed bothered I was there. Sensing that I just asked if they sold basketball cards. He pointed over to a spot with tons of cards poorly cluttered and displayed. I asked to see a box and he got out of his chair as he was showing me the box he took a personal phone call, on speaker phone no less, while he was 'helping' me. In addition to his other worldly personal phone call and the smell of fast food grease emanating from him(even with a mask on), I put the card box down and left. Went here most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for about 2 months for Yugioh. The place is a little cramped and dirty because it's filled to the brim with anime merchandise, but since I've been going there, they've moved a lot of merchandise to a separate warehouses so it's a little less cluttered. They also stock a ton of Yugioh sealed product, and had the volume to cater to many individual players who were buying at least 1 box each of the latest set the weekend it came out. The place sometimes opens a little late, and most regulars will show up right about when the tournament starts, as opposed to the store opening time on the weekends. The tournaments also start a little late too. Friday night is usually more crowded than Saturday and Sunday afternoon and around 16-32 people show up for the tournament. The atmosphere is more on the competitive side, but you can either sign up for the "intermediate" or "advanced" tournament. Entry is $10, which is twice the usual $5 at most other stores, but you get double the entry packs. You seem to get a little less than double the prizes for topping though, and they do not offer store credit on singles. I've heard bad things about the store owner but he never showed up when I was there. Instead, the most common employee was a woman who has a heart of gold despite not knowing a lot about Yugioh. She's also a big anime nerd :) The current tournament organizer (not the woman) usually plays in the tournaments and has a very good deck, but he's very knowledgeable about the game a very chill person to talk to. There's only a few food places nearby. I especially recommend the Vegetarian Indian Cafe a few stores down. read more

I'd like to rate it higher because of how nice the staff is, but at the moment this is what the store deserves. They moved locations a few months ago, so be prepared for LOTS of boxes and the store itself feeling extremely dingy. That being said, when it comes to merchandise, this place has an extremely well-organized and well-upheld collection of DVD and manga. They also had a corner explicitly for trading cards, as well as a section for card games. One of the best places to go for anime/ccg employees are very nice and knowledgeable and the Owner is very nice. When it comes to anime they have a very wide selection. The employee's at AP give out great suggestions when looking for a new anime to watch/manga to read. AP also has a wide range of trinkets and plushies. When it comes to ccg you cant find a friendlier or safer place then AP. They sell there booster boxes 10 dollars cheaper than most places in the area and the store has a really big yu-gi-oh scene. I have never had to deal with bad service, the employee's are always very helpful and kind. This is one of the greatest stores I have ever been in. You should check it out for yourself. read more

Pretty good card selection if you're into yugioh. My buddy plays pokemon and they didn't have much of that for him tho. They could afford to clean their bathroom more often. Worse than a gas station bathroom. Some items they had were cheaper or the same price as online, while others were overpriced to hell because they had little of them. Employee tried saying this was supply and demand, but that was an excuse to me for overpricing something I can get $35 cheaper online. Just get more if you have low supply and high demand. The employee sitting down was very helpful with what I needed answered, but he often gave me more than I needed with his answers. He was trying to sell my buddy and me on everything. Telling us all the deals we clearly weren't interested in. They did have some awesome sales going on for single packs and other card options. Location was small and dirty looking, something that was very off putting for me. Play space is also small, not sure how they handle the tournaments when a lot of people show up. read more

I was looking over anime pavilion's webite and saw some anime I wanted to buy. Looking over the contact us page, I realized they were only about 30-40 minute drive, so I took note of which anime I wanted and drove there. The place was small but quaint. All staff were busy working on other things but all greeted me and asked if I was being helped. After searching the DVD/Bluray section I only saw two anime available, the others must have either been sold, but when I asked about stock, they said if anything wasn't there it must be due to convention season. That's fine I said. I picked out the anime I wanted and noticed a glaring price difference for one of them (premium edition of Occult Academy bluray) was around $180.00 while on their own website it was $64.00. I asked one of the staff there why that was the case and if I could just buy the anime based on the web price since I just drove 40 minutes to get to their retail location. They were all hesitant to do so. Not sure why. I explained that any retailer, if they are selling things on their own site, that they would try and make sure that prices on their site match what they are charging in their brick & mortar locations. If I didn't go to their store, and just ordered online they would have to honor that price. Abraham, who I was speaking to seemed to agree and gave a reason that the web master was not available for whatever reason. I clearly stated that was not my problem. It is the onus of the business to make sure they have available resources for their online presence. Perhaps instead of having three employees in a small space, dedicate one resource to maintaining the website. Abraham had mentioned that if I ordered on their website it could be shipped out. Ok then, I did just that. I used my smartphone and placed the order on their website for the anime that was sitting right out in front of me at their store. I spoke with Abraham at the time, and being very understanding, I asked if he would be able to ship it out, and he said he would. The online order was placed on 12/31/2013 while I was in their store. Just today, 1/7/2014, I get an email from Steve Lin (The owner apparently based on other reviews), indicating the item was not available and my money was refunded. He said if I wanted to order it again the price is $200 (MORE THAN even the retail price at their store) and I would have to order via e-mail. This is the most blatant form of price gouging/switching and unethical business practice if I've ever seen it. I've spent years working in the government and supporting our U.S. military and am shocked, frustrated, and upset about the ridiculous and unethical business policy they employ. read more
