We ate at this sandwich shop on a visit to Chattanooga. It seemed like a local restaurant due to fact that there was always someone coming in to eat or to get take out. I have a grilled chicken salad that was fresh and cold. My husband had an impossible burger that he said was good. Staff were friendly and there were tables to eat in the restaurant. read more

We visited this place on a trip 4 years ago and loved it. Revisited today and still love it. Sometimes you remember something and you're like that was amazing but when you go back you're left unsatisfied because it didn't live up to the memory you had. This is not that place. I had a limited amount of time for lunch and have always wanted to try Ankar's, so today was the perfect day to try it out. Around lunch time, places downtown can get pretty busy so I was hesitant when I walked in and it was close to full already. I had such a great lunchtime experience and I was extremely surprised by the speedy and friendly service. They have a pretty wide variety on their menu, but still keep it simple with burgers and popular sandwiches and reasonable prices. I was anxious to try the falafel so and it was so perfect! Very crispy, deliciously seasoned falafel in a pita bread with fresh lettuce, onion and special sauce. It was very filling and really hit the spot. Next time I'll have to listen to everyone's recommendation and try out the onion rings and their desserts were tempting and pretty cheap as well. Definitely worth a stop while downtown and don't be intimidated by the lunchtime crowd, they have great service! read more

It's not an Atlantan's beloved Al's gyro, but it's darn tasty! I'd eyeballed the menu on one of the many occasions I strolled past on a jaunt down Broad and spotted the gyro among their (many) hot sandwich options. Note to self to try, accomplished yesterday! Very simple, clean, friendly little space. Fairly large menu; a basic order-at-the-counter, pick-up-your-food-when-called kind of place. Sides are extra. They have sandwiches (hot and cold) and "plates" (chicken fingers and the like) and a kids menu. Great gyro. To me, unusual that the gyro was an almost sealed (due to the heat) pita, rather than more of a pita bread wrapped around all the goodness; it is actually quite effective this way, keeping 99% of the yummies inside. I went with the traditional (lamb and beef) gyro (they do offer a chicken as well) and with the tomatoes, onions and classic sauce, it was so good. Lots of meat. Lots of sauce - almost too much, but not quite, in a good way, if that makes sense! I ate almost all of it - if you have a really big appetite or really, really dig on gyros (I am thinking of Richard R the time he, Helena W and I went to Agora) then you might want one and a half, or at least eat all your fries or get a second side....the fries were ok - pretty basic, very hot and - this may sound like a "doh!" Homer Simpson kind of remark, but very . . . potato-y tasting . . . That was the main thing that stood out about them, seriously. But that sandwich - I will return for it, for sure. Hours are a bit odd/early closing as someone else mentioned, but for a downtown lunch/early dinner spot, this is a great choice. read more

Here in Chattanooga for the next 9-10 weeks for work and asked the associates in the office I'm in what some good options were for lunch and they suggested Ankar's and told me to get the onion rings. It's a small shop with a family feel and I didn't realize it was a chain until I looked up the location on Yelp to do a review! I got the special, which had ham (I got it without...), salami, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo. You get your choice of a wrap, a hoagie or a pita which they call a sack. The order of onion rings was big enough to share with another person - I didn't finish mine! One of my coworkers got the greek salad with grilled chicken on it and couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was! Great customer service and good food...I'll definitely go back for lunch during the rest of my time there! read more

Such sweet people. We frequent Ankar's when staying downtown. This last time we brought our small son. The owner came out to say hello to him, gave him some free crackers, and then asked his name. When we left, she came back, remembered his name to say bye, and offered to take our trash since we were carrying him. That's only one example of the wonderful service you'll get here! Not to mention the food is absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. No frills on this food, just simple, wholesome, and amazing. Plus they have the best onion rings I've ever eaten in my life! Being a visitor, I started by asking my host "where's the best onion rings? " I hadn't had a decent ring in forever... the rest of the meal could be figured out. Lol I got the chicken shwarma. Finally tried this place the other day after reading rave reviews. I'm a vegetarian, so I tried the falafel sandwich. It was SO good! The sandwich regularly comes with tahini and some other sauce, but neither sounded good to me, so I got the tzatziki sauce instead (which I think is house-made). The falafel was perfect. I can't speak for anything else on the menu, but if you like falafel, you gotta try this place. The only negative thing I can say about it is that they close at 3pm during the week! LAME. They definitely should stay open for dinner M-W. I think they are open for dinner on the weekends, though. read more

I can't vouch for much else but the Steak in a Sack has been a favorite for years. The fried good from fries to mushrooms are great This is great change up form the norm. Vegetarians friends of mine love the Falafel. Give it a try. It isn't fancy but it is better than getting yet another burger. read more

The BEST hoagies I have ever ever ever had. This was my favorite spot as a child and it's still to date my favorite restaurant by far. Family owned and operated, the owners are such amazing people. Whenever I'm in town my dad and I always come here. It's an absolute must. I wish I went to college closer to TN just so I can come here! Filling, delicious, comfort food. Stopped by here for lunch for the first time today and really enjoyed it. The place was clean and service was really fast.
