This review is based on a visit 8/9/20. Went solely for the Beef on Weck sandwich, which is only offered on Sundays. If you're not familiar with this sandwich, you are missing out! It is a regional sandwich which originated in Buffalo, NY and is pretty much a staple throughout NY state and other parts of the Northeast. It is a similar to a French Dip, but served on a round Kimmelweck roll, which is a good hearty roll split and topped with caraway seeds and kosher salt - lots of kosher salt (a very good thing!). The beef is a bit wet, which is why the Kimmelweck roll is so important, because it is sturdy enough to stand up to the luscious juices from the medium rare sliced beef. My bestie and I had the Beef on Weck during our fall road trip from Boston to Ithaca last October, and have been obsessed ever since. When we found out Ann O'Malley's had it on Sundays, we immediately made plans for a Sunday trip from Jacksonville to feast on our obsession. We checked their Yelp and Facebook pages to make sure they were open and doing dine-in before setting a date/time. We found the place easily, a quaint, eclectic little spot which had a mask master at the door ensuring entering patrons were aware of the mask policy before proceeding indoors ("Masks must be worn at all times when not seated at your table.) We were told to have a seat anywhere we liked, then greeted fairly promptly by a server in a mask. Unfortunately, when we tried to place our order for two Beef on Weck sandwiches, we learned they were not serving them at this time. Our server sites the reasons as supply chain issues due to COVID which prevents them from getting the Kimmelweck rolls (which are shipped from a NY state bakery) and the Beef they use (not sure if this also comes from NY state as they didn't say). So very disappointing! When there is a signature item that is ONLY served one day of the week, and this item is temporarily unavailable on the menu with no ETA of its return, I would expect that information to be prominently highlighted on your Facebook and/or Yelp pages somewhere, maybe even an updated picture of the menu with that item marked out with a red x or something. Alas, it was not. We settled for splitting the Marty sandwich and a Hog of a Dog with Chili with a side of cole slaw. When the food arrived, the dog was missing the chili. Our server seemed to have amnesia that we even ordered it with chili, as she repeated back that we had asked for the Hog of a Dog... to which we replied: ".. yes, Hog of A Dog, no onions, no jalapeños, add chili." She brought out a small cup of chili, which was very tasty, even if it had a few chunky veggies in it (my friend didn't mind, but I prefer my chili without chunks of veg). However, it was thinner and sweeter than a hot dog chili is typically, so after a spoonful added over top of the dog, it became a knife & fork kind of experience, and the chili was enjoyed as a soup side with a spoon. The hot dog was plump and beefy. It was served on a potato roll type bun, which was soft and yeasty. The Marty is essentially a Reuben with the sauerkraut swapped out for their homemade slaw, which our server explained is unique as it's made with a raspberry vinegar. We opted for it to be served on the side (sorry, no pic). The hot pastrami was a bit dry, but helped out by the addition of some mustard which we asked for after the first bite. My friend said she might order the Marty again, but for me it would be a pass (mainly since no place will ever touch the hot pastrami on rye from Carnegie Deli in NY). The homemade slaw didn't really scream "raspberry vinegar" - had we not been told, we would not have known it was any different than sla made with white vinegar. I actually thought the vinegar flavor and tang was a bit weak, so asked for a small side of it so that I could add more to the slaw myself. It was also not quite sweet enough, but I fixed that with the stevia drops I carry in my purse for just such occasions. Aside from the hot dog, maybe the best part of our visit were these lovely homemade cookies in varied and uncommon flavors. Our server explained they are baked by a teen with autism who comes up with the flavors and recipes himself, and uses the proceeds to fund his summer camp stay each year. Overall, a solid experience; docking a for not posting on the Facebook or Yelp pages about the Beef on Weck being temporarily unavailable for the time being. This place was not on my extensive St. Augustine list of things to do but we decided to stop in after dinner on St. Patrick's Day. I mean how could you not visit an Irish bar on this day? We walked up and there were many people sitting outside. Hubby grabbed a table outside while I went inside to order beers. There was live music and even large speakers outside. I stood at the bar by the front door for over 5 minutes before being acknowledged. I asked for 2 Innis & Gunn. The bartender looked at me like I had 8 heads. I said you have a banner outside advertising it for St. Patrick's Day. He says oh that was outside and we ran out. Okay. Now I have to go out and get a different request from hubby. I go back to the same spot and wait again. And wait. And wait. Mind you, it was not packed and I was the only one waiting at the bar for a drink. I finally get to order and one of the taps was super slow and spitting mostly foam. Again I wait. He asks if I want to keep an open tab and I said yes so he asks for a credit card. I give it to him and he doesn't come back. Okay now I have to assume they hold on to it. Some places just swipe the card and give it back. Anyway, I sit outside with hubby and drink our beverages while admiring the ambiance. The building looked older than most businesses. The place is rather small but spacious enough for 100 people combined for outside and inside. Now for the finale...it was getting close to midnight and this is when I celebrate my birthday because everyone is hungover on my birthday every year so I started to celebrate at midnight on St. Patrick's Day. I wanted to go somewhere else that we knew would stay open late. Once again, I go in and wait at the same spot at the bar to close out. The bartender saw me and did not acknowledge me. After 5 minutes, he says I'll be right with you sweetie. Um okay. He then proceeds to serve someone a beer, have a 5 minute conversation with someone else at the end of the bar, then actually leave the bar (all at the rate of speed of a slug). Thankfully there was someone else working but i don't think he was as a bartender. He approached me as soon as he was done and I asked to close out. It seriously took him less than 2 minutes. If I ever come here again, if I see that lazy bartender, I definitely will not stay. read more

Do not go here. We ordered our food and started to wait. Sandwiches came out 1 at a time. They were only sandwiches, nothing complicated-made with cold cuts. Server dropped one sandwich basket which was caught by our grandson before it hit his lap. I could have made triple amount of sandwiches in the 40+ mins it took to get them. I would give them a -1 if it was available. Bill was expensive-a small plastic container with 5 pieces of avocado no bigger than 1.5 inches was an additional $1.50. Like an old Irish Pound, there were two sides to my Ann O'Malley's experience. On one side was the food. On the other side, was the experience. The food and general cleanliness: We had high hopes for the food. We like Irish pubs and Irish food. But, like a Scott Norwood field goal that sails just right of the upright in the final seconds, the food was a huge let down. Admittedly our selections of the nachos and the submarine sandwich were probably more like a Vince Ferragamo/Joe Cribbs backfield than Jim Kelley and Thurman Thomas (which from the other reviews appears to be the Reuben and Beef on Weck (but on Sundays only)). Regardless, that doesn't excuse the nearly inedible beef on the nachos and the lack of vegetation on the sub. I'm expecting shredded iceberg, more onion, and thin slices of tomato. When asked about a simple sub sauce, I was given packets of Italian dressing. There was plenty of decent meat on the sub. Overall, the wife said the nachos were reminiscent of something you'd get at a convenience store. She left more than half on the plate. The beer selection was decent, but the beer tasted like it was coming from dirty lines. I switched to the cider, which was fine. The general disorganization, leaking HVAC vent right over a bar stool, and an overall dirty feel to the place, did nothing to dissuade from that sense of a lack of attention to details. The overall experience: Ann O'Malley's is good at providing that "small Irish Pub feel". The small space makes it easy to become fast friends with those around you, and it was that way for us. Like a precision touchdown strike from Jim Kelly to Andre Reed, the service from the staff was nearly flawless. The bartenders were very friendly, very accommodating, and very attentive. Further enhancing the atmosphere and overall experience, I gotta give props to the evening's version of a Whitney Houston rendition of the National Anthem...Miss Gina's Trivia was the real reason we were there, and she didn't disappoint. The summary on Ann O'Malley's is simple. If you're looking for a super-friendly, fairly authentic, small Irish Pub experience (like winning the AFC Championship), you will want to stop in when touring our beautiful St. Augustine. If you're expecting the entire Irish Pub experience (you know, winning that Super Bowl Ring), this isn't the place. My recommendation is that you don't plan to eat here. Based on Yelp reviews, we opted to stop by Ann O`Malley`s instead of our usual, Scarlett O`Hara`s. This turned out to be a big mistake. We ordered our food, and were told the wait time would be 30 minutes (only sandwiches were ordered) We did not get food until 1 hour and 15 minutes later! The waiter appeared to be lost! We ordered more drinks and he forgot to get them, only remembering when he brought appetizers to another table. My grandson (25 years old) ordered the ultimate PB&J and was brought a kids PB&J instead. Four sandwiches were served and we had to ask for the final sandwich, which apparently had also been forgotten. I do realize that help is hard to come by, but its time to do your job with some enthusiasm. No, we won`t be going back when we return to St Augustine- probably go back to Scarlett O. read more

We found a table (which wasn't too hard considering there were only a handful of customers there besides my wife and I. It took some time (probably 10-ish minutes) before the bartender came over to get our drink order. We ordered our drinks, and when we decided that we were not going to order food, the bartender actually belted out a sigh of relief by saying "even better" (as in, he didn't want to have to cook anything). We went for the adult bingo on Sunday night with a group of 11 and had an absolute blast! I would describe it as an more of an interactive comedy show than bingo. Karrissa is hysterical. Stopped here for the first time on Sunday specifically for the Beef on Weck. We have been to other places that claimed to have Beef on Weck that turned out to be dried out chewy roast beef on a hamburger bun, so we did not get our hopes up. It was outstanding! It is tender roast beef server on a real kimmelweck roll with ground horseradish. Even got to wash it down with a Molson Canadian. If you are not from Buffalo you can't appreciate that this is not possible outside of western NY. As a bonus it was Sunday and the Bills were playing. We had some excellent food here yesterday. Sadly, we were all so hungry that i didn't even think to get some pictures until after we had demolished it! The kids both had hotdogs, which they destroyed. Our friends had a Submarine and Chicken salad, respectively, which they both really enjoyed. Hubs had a build your sandwich and I honestly couldn't tell you what was in it but he loved. In my opinion, my meal was the best. I had a half sandwich, which was some sort of pastrami, and the soup was butternut squash. The soup was AMAZING. I also had a delightfully strong Irish Coffee.
