Upon arrival I gave my reservation name and was told there was no such reservation after him sifting through a stack of crumpled papers for a while. He further stated he'd been answering the phone all night and did not recall speaking to me which I found somewhat argumentative :/ He found my reservation name but stated he had to release our table as we were running late but then emphasized that they were on a really long wait and we probably wouldn't be seated for an hour..... tables were available 5 minutes later and we were seated in 5 minutes. People who came in after us were all also immediately seated which I found odd in light of the hour wait time disclaimer. We opted for bar seating even though we were also offered table seating, I thought the bar area looked more spacey. Service was slow and the Raven signature cocktail was kind of watered down despite being described to have a number of vodkas in it. Did I mention service was slow??? We enjoyed the steamed mussels appetizer quite a bit while the famous duck fat fries would have likely been better if they had come out hot. My crab cake sandwich was also not hot while tasty nonetheless. The fish tacos were fresh and delicious and honestly the only memorable part of our meal. In Canton, I've heard plenty of good things about Annabel Lee Tavern. It's got a nice Edgar Allen Poe vibe and in the same week I received two recommendations to try it there (in addition to the countless recommendations I've heard in the past.) My friend Laura has also been dying to try Annabel Lee Tavern so we made a plan to grab dinner on a Friday evening. Fortunately we were able to grab a seat at the bar even though the place was packed. Tip, call ahead and make a reservation! After looking over the menu, we decided to split a few things. First was the Duck Fat Fries. We had both heard plenty of good things about them and they did not disappoint. The portion was HUGE and they were spiced/seasoned well. They're also probably one of the most suggested items on the menu. Next, we decided to try an order of the Crispy Brussels Sprouts. The brussels sprouts had a honey herb drizzle and were delicious. They weren't over-fried and greasy, also the honey herb drizzle was nice and light and provided a nice sweetness to the vegetable. Lastly, we decided to share the BBQ Chicken and Applewood Smoked Bacon Nachos. Now this dish was ridiculous and one of the best things I've eaten in a while. For starters, this portion was massive, I took home leftovers and had it for another meal and a half. Second, there was a ton of melty cheese covering all of the chips and the BBQ chicken was well marinated and added a nice flavor. And then how could anyone go wrong with bacon. If you're at Annabel Lee Tavern, do yourself a favor and order the nachos. If you're in the mood for something in Canton, try Annabel Lee Tavern. You won't be disappointed. read more

Annabel Lee Tavern was a great choice for a chill weekend evening with friends! We had heard rave reviews of their duck fat fries and definitely weren't disappointed! The nachos as an appetizer hit the spot and I'd highly recommend them with the BBQ chicken topping. I had their Crispy Dijon special which I thought was cooked perfectly and paired well with chunky mashed potatoes and fresh baby spinach. My friends got the Lenore burger (cheeseburger) and the portobello burger, which were also pretty tasty! The jalapeno fries were a little on the spicy side, so buyer beware! I thought the service was a bit slow, it took a while for our food to get to our table after appetizers. Otherwise, our waiter was very nice and attentive. I don't know why it took me so long living in Canton to actually try this place. I used to run along the water, but since the pandemic, I have been trying to find less crowded places to run and with the new route, I started running by Annabel Lee Tavern. It's on an unassuming corner with some Poe quotes around. Called in my order for pick up and it took about 20 minutes. Greeted by a very friendly woman behind the bar and my take out order had a personalized note! I ordered a seafood burrito special that they were having served with old bay fries and the crispy Brussels sprouts. My husband ordered the meatloaf and duck fat fries. The crispy Brussel sprouts were charred nicely so that it did have a crunch and drizzled in honey so there was a good balance between sweet and salty. The burrito had shrimp and scallops with a spicy mayo sauce - there were big tender pieces of seafood in every bite and the sauce added a nice touch. The fries were really crispy and flavorful. My husband really enjoyed his meatloaf and I have to admit, even though I had fries of my own, I had to steal some of his duck fat fries. Celebrating the bicentennial of poet Edgar Allen Poe I attended this tavern after the funeral of Sir Edgar Allen Poe (a most perfect melancholic event 200 years after the fact). It has everything one can expect from a restaurant inspired by Poe. Dead Roses, black cats, poem inscriptions, and ravens on lampshades. (For the record there were no pits or women buried in the walls..this is a good thing) Welcoming and inviting, the decor and ambiance is charming without being pretentious. You can wax poetic about the literary importance of Poe or how the soprano at his bicentennial event may have missed a few important notes. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Even though I went to the tavern by myself I enjoyed great conversation at the bar. Great selection of wine and spirits (You must try the Raven cocktail) and the menu was affordable. Unfortunately there was no raven pie but I settled for the BLT and duck fries. Obstructing my diet for pork and duck fat was indeed worth it! In addition everyone around me seemed to be very pleased with their selection. Until something better comes along this is my favorite tavern in Baltimore. Food was amazing! We had the Brussel Sprouts and Duck Fat Frites for apps which were both fantastic. Three people in our party got the Sweet Potato Risotto and one got the Vegetable Curry which were wonderful as well. This review would have been four stars if we didn't have to deal with what happened after. We split the bill 4 ways. One paid cash and the other three split the check ($36 each). Someone must have made a mistake at some point charging the cards and the next day we noticed $36 taken on and off of one of our cards, $36 charged twice to a second card and $109 charged to a third card. When someone in our party called to ask why the extra charges and the charges being taken on and off cards she was told 9/10 it resolves itself and to wait a day or two. My friend then asked, "Ok but what about the 1/10 times it doesn't resolve and why was $109 charged to a card when the person who owned the card only authorized $36 being charged to that card?" She was then abruptly told by the manager, "I don't know what else you want me to do for you?" and hung up on. Sorry a business charging unauthorized charges onto a credit card and then when questioned acting like it's your fault. No thanks we won't ever be here again and you shouldn't either. Doesn't matter how good your food is.....shady business is not ok and either is being rude when you are questioned about it. read more

We love this place! Called ahead on a Saturday night and they reserved 4 seats at the bar for us. The place settings were there when we arrived. Turkey chili, meatloaf, and burger were excellent. Wanted to love the vegan curry but it was hot (spicy) . That was the prevalent flavor. Staff was awesome and service was excellent. They even brought a birthday dessert for our daughter. So I decided to celebrate my birthday here upon a rave review from a friend who lives nearby. I'll start with 2 drawbacks: parking is very tough, get here early because you might have to drive around a bit to find a space. Second, the entire restaurant is quite small so you need to make a reservation. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call earlier today confirming reservation. I can't remember last time a place did that. Now, onto the food. Everyone kept raving about them so we tried both the duck fat fries AND jalapeño fries. Finally made it to Annabel Lee after having it on my list of "to try" places for ages. I will be back. Oh yes, I will. This is a perfect corner bar/tavern/restaurant for a cold late November evening. Cozy, warm, small, and full of people, without being obnoxiously loud and annoying. Good bar and bar staff - spotted Woodford bourbon and Hendrick's gin bottles on the back bar, so I can definitely get my drinkies the way I want them. There's golden-era jazz on the sound system, and it's all just... nice. Bar pluses: Resurrection Ale on draft. A person younger than me ordering a Manhattan cocktail. The bartender asking said person what whiskey they wanted that made with - bourbon or rye - and extra points for not only having both available, but knowing enough to ask. Food - pretty damned good. Had braised Brussels sprouts with a tomato/balsamic dressing and field greens, topped with bleu cheese crumbles. I love sprouts, even though most people hate them, and these were very tasty. The missus had veal tortellaci with Marsala wine sauce and a fresh, crisp Caesar salad while I chowed down on chipotle-BBQ'd duck leg/thigh and half Cornish hen piled on top of duck-fat fries. Annabel Lee just misses the five-star mark for the duck, though - it was offered as confit - slow cooked in its own fat - what it was, was not confit. The meat was slightly overcooked and dried out - more roasted and then grilled/broiled with the sauce than slow-cooked. But the Cornish hen was done perfectly and fries are friggin' fantastic. Dessert was two hot, chewy, chocolate chip cookies loaded with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and whipped cream. We split it, so we didn't quite waddle outta the place. Gets busy on Saturday night, but it's service at the bar or at high-boys anyway, so take whatever suits you. Relax - have a cocktail, and then an ale with dinner. Dig that here in B'more, we're not so fancy, but we got some damned good eats. read more

This little joint is very unique with its Edgar Allen Poe decór. I arrived just as Baltimore Restaurant Week started. For $25, I got a lovely three course meal. To start, I chose the butternut squash bisque. It was sweet with Parmesan cheese and sour cream that balanced the sweetness perfectly. Then I chose the garden salad... the hearts of palm and kalamata olives were just so yummy. Finally, I had the petit filet with duck fat fingerling potatoes and sautéed green beans. Wow! The balsamic sauce just made the dish outstanding! The Tell Tale IPA and Resurrection beers couldn't have been any better! Walking into a haunting, brooding dive with 40s music and just a really great energy was fantastic...unfortunately, the food and service was not. WHAT WE ORDERED: Mako shark - nothing special just fine, smaller portions. Bonus points for their eclectic plateware. Steak, medium rare - yuck. So overdone we actually thought it was pork. When we sent it back, the next steak was just as overdone and dry. Very disappointing - especially considered that if anyone should know "bloody," it's Poe! Service - very grudging and offput. Wonderful night in Baltimore being a literary nerd. The Annabel Lee Tavern is such a gem. Amy and Kurt were so kind and took great care of me. They pointed me in the direction of the vegetarian entrées, as well as several delicious Edgar Allan Poe inspired cocktails. The restaurant is decorated with original Poe inspired art work and memorabilia; Kurt, the owner and one of the folks serving, is also the artist of all of the original work. This guy has amazing talent! The night I visited, there was a live music group consisting of a violinist and an accordion. Beautiful music that really set the tone. It's nice and cozy and the atmosphere is great. Get to know the waiters! We both substituted the fries with jalapeno fries and also duck fat fries. SO SO SO GOOD. Even if you just order the fries alone, they are great. Haven't updated my review on Annabel Lee in a while, so I thought a recent experience warranted another affirmation on the awesomeness of this place. This time I brought my family and the in-laws here. I didn't expect Annabel Lee to be an option for reserving a spot for a party of nine on a busy Thursday night. But it happened. I called only two days prior and was graciously accommodated for. As expected, for such a large party, main entrees took a little while to come out, but appetizers and drinks came out promptly. I felt bad because one member of our party fell ill prior to dinner and had to be taken home. So for a good portion of our time at Annabel Lee, we only took up maybe six seats. Regardless, our servers were still very friendly, checked in with us every so often, packed the orders to go for the people missing from the table, and catered to the different needs we had. As previously recommended, the duck fat fries are still deliciously wonderful, but skip the jalapeno fries. The chicken and bacon nachos are also fantastic. If you feel brave, check out the heavy duty mega burger. The crab cake sandwiches are a classic, and the Annapolis chicken sandwich is pretty decent as well. I love the grilled tuna panini, and the crab imperial stuffed shrimp is one of favorites. Also, make sure to ask for the specials menu. Some of the items there are pretty darn good. read more

Bottom Line: Thanks to Yelpers, I chose Annabel Lee, and I was not disappointed. I loved the food and the ambience, and the price of our meal was astoundingly affordable for the quantity, quality, and variety of the food we ordered. Food and Drink: I ordered a Resurrection beer (only $3.50, and it wasn't Happy Hour, although it made me happy), a good suggestion by the staff after I asked about a recommended local beer, and it was great. There's a large selection of bottled beer, tap beer, and Poe-themed cocktails. My friend ordered the Sepulchre, which included pear cider and something that tastes like Mike 'n Ike candy (I'm more of a beer person who doesn't know much about cocktails), and although it was sweet for my taste, it was good, and you get the whole rest of the bottle of pear cider. For an appetizer, we ordered the duck fat fries. YUM-O. They were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and soft, but not too mushy or mealy on the inside. I didn't know duck fat could impart so much flavor (and I suspect a little bit of sugar to carmelize in the outside). I think that the flavor of the "herbes de Provence" could've come through more strongly, but honestly it wasn't a big deal since the fries were so tasty. The $8 per basket might seem like a lot to some people for fries, but it was a LOT of potatoes, and they were darn tasty. (Do you notice a theme here?) For entrees, we ordered the crab cake platter and crab/sweet corn quesadilla. One crab cake is 7 oz, as per the waiter, and it was comprised of crab chunks and minimal filler, but a lot of flavor. I'll be honest and admit that I rarely have the chance to eat crab cakes, so I'm not an expert, but I thought it was quite good. The crab cake platter came with a LOT of golden mashed potatoes, four entire spears of asparagus (usually you only get two wimpy ones, which bums me out since I love veggies), and a small salad. The bit of crab corn quesadilla I ate from my friend's plate was good. For dessert, we shared the rum bread pudding. I liked it because it had good flavor but wasn't too sweet or too strongly flavored by the rum. The whipped cream and caramel on top were good, but it's pretty hard to make those taste bad, too me. The flavor profile could've been more complex with some added spices (cardamom would've been interesting), but it was a solid dessert. Flavor profile, smlavor profile. Service, Ambience, Reservations and Parking: The staff seemed genuinely friendly and attentive without hovering. I loved the Edgar Allan Poe theme. It somehow manages to be charming and not kitschy. Although this place is undoubtedly touristy, it also feels like a place locals go. Considering the staff, vibe, and $3.50 tap beer, I'd come here to drink if I were local. It was pretty crowded, and I called around 4:30pm to make a reservation for 7pm. This is warranted, given the few tables and the cozy space. The bar was full when we arrived, but we didn't have a problem finding parking around 7pm less than a block away, although it was a Tuesday, and the street parking was full when we left around 10pm. read more

You look at this place from the outside and it looks like a hole in the wall. It's tiny inside buy they produce big meals with character and personality. Ive never had a bad meal here - meatloaf, veggie curry, and even the seafood (per my husband) is all well done. They have a big bar menu so u can get wine, IPAs, or delicious mixed drinks. They had cool lanterns on the tables that were lit as soon as the sun went down. Our server was one of the bartenders and he was very patient and knowledgeable. We got there just at the start of the dinner jam and he quickly got busy, but other servers/bartenders jumped in to help him. I liked their teamwork and enthusiasm. 10/5. I tried a few beers and a drink titled "Masque of the Red Death", which was delicious. Prices were a bit high, but not unreasonable. 5/5. I tried the duck fat fries. Yes, they were the best thing that had happened to my mouth in a while. Yes, they deserve all the fame they've received. Well worth the calories. 100/5. I had the chicken Annapolis sandwich. Chicken was tasty, bread toasty, cheese cheesy...but...I felt kinda disappointed. It said it had crab dip on it, maybe it did, but if so it couldn't have been more than half a teaspoon. I would've preferred an aoli over non-existent crab dip, if I'd been given the choice. I get that the dip was meant more as a mayonaise type condiment than a main ingredient, but still - it could've had more. 2/5. I almost left 10 min past my reservation time because it was so blazing hot in the bar area but the gentleman working said, wait why are you leaving here's your table and it's cooler here. He was so genuinely nice we stayed. All three people working kind of make rounds and serve everyone. It's great. They all care and they made us feel so welcome in our new neighborhood. Our drinks were always full and they checked up on us often. The food was also great. We had the duck fat fries as an appetizer. They were so crispy and flavorful, so dangerously delicious! It was a big serving for two people and we can eat a lot! I had the crab cake platter. The mash potatoes were so good. The crab cake was a alright classic MD lump crab cake. The real star tho was the kale served with it. OMG I don't know what was in in, I think applewood bacon, but I could eat a big bowl of that as a meal alone! Yum! Wonderful! My fiancé had the ribeye and he liked it a lot. It was cooked perfect medium rare. We saved room for dessert. Annabel Lee has hearty, tasty pub food and a great Poe-themed decor, as long as you aren't the type to be unsettled by the prospect of eating dinner under the vaguely haunting gaze of a long-dead writer. I found it charming. The service is also excellent. I opted for the Annapolis chicken sandwich, topped with cheddar and crab dip, which was incredibly satisfying (and not just because it came on the tail-end of four beers). The one letdown was that my sweet potato fries, which are normally a favorite of mine, were a little soggy and seemed to have some additional glaze which made them entirely too sweet for my palate. The ambiance was perfect for our Halloween Bride to be. The drinks were all Edgar Allen Poe themed (I personally had the Annabel Lee) everyone complimented the perfect pours; Not too heavy not too light. The food was so fresh tasting and priced fair. The mashed potatoes might be the best I've ever eaten and The duck fat fries were killer! Even the picky eater of our group ate their entire plate of food. My wife and I just left this place. It was nothing short of amazing. We started off with an order of the duck fat fries. They were the best fries I have ever had. And I normally don't eat potatoes. My wife ordered the crabcake, and I had the fish tacos. The flavors, freshness of the ingredients and the presentation was flawless. The place is small (intimate?), but wonderfully and tastefully decorated as a shrine to Edgar A. Poe, and his tragic poem Anabell Lee. The staff is courteous and quick to make suggestions if you are stuck on deciding which meal to try. The service time from kitchen to table is slower than chain restaurants, but you can't rush perfection. It is all worth the wait. This was our first time at Annabel Lee Tavern. Go for the crab cakes, stay for the mashed potatoes!! We came on "Lump Night" when Crab Cakes are cheaper. The crab cake was great, imperial sauce is baked into the cake, so you don't need tartar sauce. As good as the crab cake was though, the mashed potatoes were incredible.
