The atmosphere is great, the service is quick, the cocktail menu is to die for, but the food could be better. Annabel Lee Tavern is somewhere my girlfriend has been wanting to try for a while, so I booked us a surprise reservation for a Friday night - unsure about wait times and such as I have heard good things about the place. We arrive a little past our reservation time (street parking - you know how that goes), and were still promptly seated. Our waitress seemed to be on her toes, maybe a bit overwhelmed, but still made sure to grab our waters almost immediately after we sat down. She also made sure to give us the specials and give us the breakdown of what was / wasn't available. She took our cocktail orders promptly. Food was brought out straight from the kitchen. For cocktails, my partner got the "Masque of the Red Death" and I went with the "Annabel Lee." Strong flavor, well made. As far as food, we started with the famous duck fat fries. They were delicious (the picture is of the appetizer sized portion). I think it was perfect for 2-3 people to split. However they did only give us one ketchup and we didn't really have a chance to ask for more (I do think it was just a busy night). As far as food, I went with the "Annapolis," noted to be a grilled chicken sandwich topped with crab dip. For my side I substituted the sweet potatoe fries for the honey glazed brussells- for $4 extra. I don't think this was worth the money. The sandwich was overall just a regular toasted sub roll, the grilled chicken could've used a lot more seasoning, and the brussells were over cooked past the point of char-grilled. As far as my partner, she got the special of Turkey meatballs with linguini. She enjoyed her meal, though I also thought this was a dish that could've just used more spice. The redeeming quality of this place is absolutely the atmosphere. Plus, I saw some dishes pass by that looked fantastic. When I come again, I'll plan a different dish so I can wrap my finger around the quality of food. When you walk in the place, it DOES feel like a tavern. It's an old building, it's kinda cramped and it's full of Knick knacks. If you just want to sit, socialize and drink- this is the place for you. read more

Baltimore has numerous places dedicated to Edgar Allen Poe. This place is one of them. From the outside to the inside, it is themed just that. From phrases of poems, to the decor w/ paintings of him, along w/ food & drink named after his work. We came in here on a friend's recommendation. We were told to get the crab cake and duck fries and to say thank you later. I would highly recommend that you call ahead to make a reservation. This place was jam packed when we arrived. There's a handful of tables and plenty of seating at the bar. Although their staff seems like it would need more to suit the needs of the patrons, it works w/ the amount of staffing they have. All the staff is friendly and attentive. Although we were told to order the crab cakes and duck fries, this place has lots of food options to choose from. Everything sounds amazing. We were busy looking what others had ordered to help us make decisions. So to start and ease our craving, we ordered the Crab Dip flatbread pizza (with Fresh Bruschetta and Cheddar Jack Cheese). The cheese def overpowered the flavor on this pizza. From its appearance, it looked like it wasn't fully cooked. Chunks of chopped tomato topped the flatbread, almost as a last minute addition. Not as flavorful and tasty as we had hoped. That set the tone which made us concerned as to how the rest of our dinner would go. Our server was helpful by providing best options of our top three selections. Jumbo Lump Crab Cake w/ jalapeno fries - all sandwiches come w/ fries, but you can choose to get other options. I paid extra to enjoy some jalapeno fries. The fries come w/ a jalapeno Aioli sauce. The crab cake is a huge portion that you have to smash between the bread in order to take a bit. The fries, well the jalapeno Aioli, is where it is at. The sandwich was good, but I think I had higher taste expectations for it. Crab Cake Platter (with Mashed Potatoes and Kale Sautéed with Applewood Smoked Bacon) - my colleague who is from Boston and has a crab cake or two in her life agreed w/ me on my taste statement. It's good, but not compared to what she's had in Boston. Mango Vegetable Curry (with Broccoli, Carrots, Squash, Bell Peppers, Dried Cranberries, and Red Onions served over Cous Cous) - my other colleague was going bananas for how good this was Duck fat fries - we had to! These are a must! If you've never had them, get them! It's rare to find these on the menu anywhere in all of my travels. These along w/ the jalapeno fries are thick and have a slight crisp to them. Skip the restaurants at the Inner Harbor and get in touch with your inner Poe! Visiting Annabel Lee is an annual tradition when my friend comes to visit from Seattle. We literally make a trip from D.C. to Baltimore just to come here! The food is delicious. Definitely try the Brussels sprouts and macaroni and cheese. They used to have a baked Brie on the menu but it may have been dropped while they are takeout only for COVID. If you see it back on the menu don't skip it! I had the Pearnini sandwich and it was delicious. My friend gets the grilled tuna panini every time and always enjoys it. I've never had a complaint about service. The women working today when we picked up our to-go order were very friendly and we enjoyed making small talk while my friend bought one of the restaurant's T-shirts. read more

I'm completely confused as to why this restaurant got good reviews. My husband and I traveled from harford county to have a date night here and feel like we wasted time and money. The menus were sticky, and the food completely lack luster. Our salads were small and unappealing. My husband got a Caesar salad that literally had one large piece of romaine on it. My wedge salad was small and tasteless. We both had the crab cake platter which was OK. The kale was boring and the mashed potatoes had no flavor. The desserts were the worst part. The chip which cookies are so hard they had to be days stale. The brownie was dry and not warmed at all. It was so bad. You couldn't pay me to eat it. In summary, I'm annoyed I wasted a date night in this place. We have three kids and rarely get out for a date night. We would've been better off going to Burger King. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place. We have been multiple times before (hence photos with plates) but I always forget to review. This time was a little different due to covid precautions and it being to-go orders only but we still had the same amazing dining experience. All the food is superb; we have never had something we didn't care for. This time we went with the Brussel sprouts (a must try), nacho tots and buffalo mushrooms (also amazing))! It is not currently on the menu but their baked Brie is the absolute best. If I could only have one item from there, I would get that every time! The tuna panini is always my go to entree; it is tasty with thick slices of tuna inside. Drink wise The Raven is my preference, sweet but strong. They have many delicious and creative options. We stopped here randomly on our drive back to Philly. We are so happy we stopped here because we were so pleased with our dinner! When you walk in you will see that it's a typical dive bar vibe, but more old fashioned. The service was great. Everyone is very friendly, and the bartenders/waitresses talk with those sitting at the bar. My boyfriend ordered the jumbo lump crab cake sandwich, and devoured it in two seconds. I tasted it and it was pretty good to me, but I'm not a crab person so I can't really judge it in relation to any other crabcake sandwich. He rated it a 9/10 though. He is a HARD rater, so that's sayin somethin! I ordered the mango vegetable curry with cous cous. It was light on the curry flavor, very creamy, and overall a great dish! The mango and the dried cranberries in the dish added a nice sweetness to it. Everything was good! This was a great choice. If we are ever back in Baltimore we will stop by here again. I feel like I had to come back and update this review since it's been so long, and they recently reopened after a scare of closing forever. I was devastated during closing weekend, and overjoyed to hear about their return. Annabel Lee is easily one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I have now ventured into many things from the menu, and every single thing I've had is noteworthy. If they ever have the salmon sliders as a special - get them. The brussel sprouts - best in the game. PLEASE get them. Chicken Chesapeake - yes and yes. Crab flatbread - abso-freakin-lutely. And what bears repeating from my last review, a million times over, if you don't get the duck fat fries, just turn around and go home. Ok, wait, don't go home...there's lots of great stuff here - but the duck fat fries are TO DIE FOR. Kind of literally, like if I died eating them - I would die a happy woman with a huge smile and full belly. But I digress. Just do yourself a favor, and get them. I've taken everyone I love most in my life to this restaurant - so that is saying a lot. And they all always want to go back. Oh, and with my latest visit, I can now review a drink. The Raven. Decided to give this place a go last evening. A very quaint tavern in the city to say the least. The service was outstanding and the beer was cold especially having a bourbon casked beer on tap, nice touch. The food was good but nothing to write home about. I got the Tuna Pannini with Old Bay fries and it was good. On the other hand, my girlfriend ordered the Salad Special and for the money, the portion size was just a smidge larger than a side salad, which was quite disappointing. I had a friend visiting who I knew would want to try a classic Baltimore crab cake, so my local friends insisted that going to the Annabel Lee was the way to go. The place is pretty small, and doesn't take reservations, so be prepared to sit at a table or the bar. Either way you can experience the fun Poe ambiance. For food, I knew I wasn't going to have a lot of vegan options since I was bringing my friend for crab cakes, but they did end up having a mango vegetable curry that I enjoyed (sadly it was over couscous, my least favorite grain, but that can't be helped ) My friend did indeed get his crab cake sandwich, and was very happy! He also noted the fries were some of the best he'd had, so I'm guessing the crab cake put him in a great mood! (They were great fries, but thats a pretty big compliment!) New review since it's been a few years - this place is still SOLID. Amazing ambiance, cocktails, staff and food. We went last night for Edgar Allan Poe's "death party" - which is just like it sounds. Themed drinks and a reading from Poe himself. Last night they did it out on the street which was awesome. We had the crispy Brussels sprouts and they are so delicious, sweetened with maple syrup I think, and crispy and served hot. Could have just been fine with that but decided to have an entree while I was there. My husband had the meatloaf which he loved, and I had the old bay tuna steak, served with cheesy grits. Phenomenal. The cocktails we had were great, I cannot remember the name of the one I tried but it was the ingredients of an old fashioned with bulliet bourbon. Highly recommend coming here. Based on our friend's recommendation (who is a local), we had dinner at Annabel Lee's last week while visiting. It's a little off the beaten path, but definitely worth the Uber ride. Drinks-wise - I started with the Annabel Lee - and I have to say, it wasn't my favorite. I love Cava and enjoy vodka, but just didn't like the combination of the two. My husband got the Edgar (which I got one later, too!). It's a very unique drink - Absinthe, Hot Water and Rock Candy Swizzle Stick. It's a small glass, but so powerful. It tastes like black licorice - which I love. It's more of a sipping drink, and quite strong, but very good. For appetizer - we got the jalapeno fries - which were almost double fried (a positive thing). We loved the fried jalapenos with the dish, but wish there were more of those and the aioli. I got the Crab Cake with mashed potatoes and kale/bacon, and my husband got the Shrimp/Steak stir fry special. The crab cake w/ potatoes and kale was extremely good. Not a lot of breading on the crab cake and I enjoyed the potatoes and bacon/salt with the kale. I didn't try the stir fry dish, but he really enjoyed it, too. For dessert - we got the chipwich. I know - boring dish, but it was delicious! Who doesn't love two chocolate chip cookies, with vanilla ice cream and whip cream...and sides of hot fudge/caramel?? We devoured the dessert. As for atmosphere - it's such a small place but a lot of charm. We got to sit in the Poe table by the fireplace and they had a live violin and accordion playing in the background. We knew it wasn't fancy so I already planned to change up the dress. When I got home from work and my neighbor saw me in my skirt and cute summer top, then asked where we were going to dinner, she told me she " loved it" at Annabelle Lee Tavern but told me I was already overdressed. Ok so were we going, to a burger joint? My god no! Intimate Edgar Allen themed tavern playing jazz music from the 30s and 40s, with the friendliest staff, the chef Howard ( 61 yo Baltimore black man whose passion is actually doing hair) coming to check on us and hanging with us a bit yet who refused to disclose his kitchen secrets, the owner Kurt and lovely waitress Jessica. Adam was super impressed with their cocktail list and declared his first drink " the best cocktail he had ever had". The grilled romaine with blue cheese salad that had a delicious smokiness to it was again " one of the best". The entrees ( lemon pepper scallops with a white wine and lemon risotto and a Porterhouse steak with a grilled tomato and the most delicious cheese redskin mashed potatoes) and deserts did not disappoint. I love when I go somewhere with no expectations, hype or information. It's a true discovery. That was the case with Annabel Lee Tavern. I was truly charmed by this place. We went there for happy hour. The crowd was fairly small, and tame but still very sociable and down-to-earth. The tavern was cozy, clean and smelled fresh! A pleasant surprise for the tavern on the corner. The walls are stained with wine colored paints, and trimmed with verses from Edgar Allen Poe's last complete poem - Annabel Lee. A little cryptic? Eh - surprisingly, not really. I sipped on the tasty Raven Lager (very suitable for Baltimore) as I noted the fake raven hovering over a framed sketch of Edgar Allen Poe. As the sun set, the restaurant only became more cozy...almost romantic with candles lit at every table and on the bar. The daily specials were hand written, xeroxed and placed on each table. Up- tempo music from the 1920s played in the background as we ate our baked brie, deliciously, crispy and flavorful nachos and crab dip flat bread pizza. FINALLY came here last night with a friend after hearing so much about this place. We had a reservation at 6pm and were promptly seated. The place isn't huge, so if you don't want to wait (like we did), make a reservation! Loved the ambience: sweet yet creepy and totally awesome! It took a while for our server to get to us, but he apologized and our orders came pretty quickly. We split the brussell sprouts for an appetizer: warm, perfectly crispy with a hint of sweetness from the honey (I've been inspired to try this at home). I got the crab cake sandwich as my entree which was HUGE thanks to the large crab cake. The crab cake itself was soft, flavorful, and full of chunks of delicious crab meat. Yum. In fact after awkwardly taking a bite and losing a chunk of crab to the ground, I opened up my sandwich, ate half of the crab cake on its own, and then put the sandwich back together, hah. The sandwich comes with blue cheese coleslaw (crunchy, refreshing, but no hint of blue cheese whatsoever), and I substituted for duck fat fries. The seafood didn't taste fresh, small and was over powered by the sauce not worth the $22. I feel if it were plated differently I may have liked it or served with a salad or greens it would have been a full meal. As it stands it was small and unappetizing. The wings were juicy but a tad undercooked for my liking. The cocktails were excellent. Although I liked my boyfriends much better (it had a huge name) I had the Raven and it tasted like jungle juice from college and not in a good way! Parking is tight in Canton but worth the hassle. Make reservations if possible. Edgar Allen Poe spent some time in Baltimore and Annabel Lee Tavern honors his legacy and love. He fell deeply for a younger girl who passed away from seraphim (tuberculosis). Edgar Allen Poe died shortly after, probably from heartbreak. You can read his poem called Annabel Lee in the book they have in the back of the tavern. His poem was published only after he died and it was his last complete piece. The tavern is filled with famous quotes and his distinct personality. This is the perfect venue for delicious food, great ambiance and to appreciate a man who was one of the first to make a living as a writer. You may also be inspired to check out the Edgar Allen Poe house and museum in the city. But you must try one of their specials! I am normally not too fond of meatloaf but this one sounded delicious and I was blown away. Very cool interior. Inside fairly dark. Reservation for 6 people for 7pm yesterday and our table was all ready when we arrived. Drink order within 5 minutes and waters at the table without asking too. Cool specials menu. We started with the wings special (honey jalapeño), 2 orders for $9.50 each. Very surprised to see each order was only SIX WINGS and although they were nice and crisp, they were small and lacking any sort of flavor. Certainly no honey or jalapeño. That was the only disappointment of the meal. Crab cake platter was fantastic, amazing mashed potatoes and greens. Crab cake was all meat and cooked perfect. $22 not a bad price at all. I was shocked by the reviews here . The food was not ... good . So we decided to come here on a cold afternoon because the reviews were so good ! We decided to ditch our regular bar and take a shot . Upon arriving, everyone working there was super friendly . They had a good selection of drinks (beers), a decent wine menu . My fiancé ordered a cocktail ... not so good . Completely watered down and just wasn't very good at all. The bathroom was pretty clean though ! It was a very cute little bar with vibey decor . I decided to order from the special menu and got the Gnocchi . Good golly . It came in a bowl that looked like I could finish it in 5 bites . It was tiny !!! It was 18 dollars and I didn't even get full off of it . Also, that dish was terrible !! My fiancé ordered the wings and they were pretty tasty, but nothing notable . His mom ordered the burger and said it was good, but also just an ordinary burger . Onto the dessert- I ordered the pumpkin cannoli thinking it was going to be so tasty . Oh boy was I wrong . The filling was just straight up cream . It was like a mousse . I don't know .. it was just weird ! That tasted nothing like a cannoli . Anyways - my food experience was pretty bad here and sometimes you really just can't trust Yelp or anybody in Baltimore with food (sorry) . In my opinion, the food scene in Baltimore just lacks . Went for restaurant week pre-covid. Service and ambiance was great, but we were disappointed with the quality of the food. The famous fries were over seasoned and had so much garlic they tasted bitter. I did enjoy my hot cider cocktail very much. Go for drinks at the bar and maybe a few apps, but I'd skip dinner here. read more
