My partner & I ordered chai tea & avocado shake, I love how it's not extremely sweet & overpowering, it came out quickly as well. As an appetizer we had crab Rangoon & it was packed with filling, which I love cream cheese & chunks of crab, their sweet & sour seemed homemade & very bright & watery but a good flavor to them. I love this place! I've been working on a house in the area and this is my go to spot for lunch. I go once a week! I have always gotten the bun, which is the vermicelli noodles with fresh toppings like cilantro, cucumber, bean sprouts, peanuts and my go to meat choice, lemongrass pork and egg roll. Prices are also better than at Vietnam Kitchen. Much more affordable and bang for your buck. Portions are reasonable. You'll end up taking some home! Everyone enjoyed their food. The staff did a good job accommodating for all of us. My only complaint was that some of us who ordered before others got their food last... I'd love to see them do a better job with this, but I understand that there were a lot of us. It's a large space though. It's a long room with tons of tables and booths. I have been coming here for several years and has never failed me! When I am sick it is not very often or it's extremely cold and snowy I like to get the chicken pho to go. They package the broth and the chicken in one separate container and the noodles bean sprouts different herbs slices of jalapeño and a lime wedge in a container so you can mix when you get home. I like to put everything in the bowl that she adds in the container the smell is amazing! Her herbs are very fresh and her chicken is perfection! I heard her say one time ...she starts cooking at 5 AM so that's the way you know that chicken does not sit around that broth is not greasy it's very thin and light I cannot say enough for this! Annie's Cafe is a small local restaurant and though I live nearby, I never had the chance to check it out, which I can say I definitely regret. The restaurant showcases simple delicious food in a comfortable environment. I got the Vegetable Pho which I was super excited to try. Most places that sell Pho don't have a fully vegetarian version - but Annie's even included a vegetarian broth. The soup was heavy on the lemongrass and the tofu was melt in your mouth soft. We've only gone a handful of times but the service was slow despite no one else being in the restaurant and they acted annoyed when taking our order. Hmm...3 stars for now but I'm hoping to up the rating on my next visit. For my first visit I had to try the crab rangoons but I was pretty disappointed in them. They were huge but had very little surimi and were mostly comprised of a black pepper/cream cheese mix. It was odd and definitely not my favorite. For my entree, I tried the Mi Xao Gion, stir fried egg noodles with shrimp and veggies. The shrimp was cooked well but the dish was overall pretty flavorless. This is near my home so I'll be back. Was at the restaurant yesterday had the salt and pepper shrimp and they were excellent but than we had the pho and it had a cinnamon broth that was not enjoyable and couldn't finish which is a first for me as really enjoy it at other restaurants. Living in South Louisville, I have see Annie Cafe for quite some time but had never ventured in. Last week I finally did, and I was very happy with the results. On this Saturday evening, there were only a few tables occupied, so we were able to be seated immediately. The restaurant itself was larger than I expected. (It's by no means "large"--but from driving by I had imagined it to be smaller.) I haven't eaten Vietnamese food too many times before, but I tried what sounded good to me on that day, a clay pot entree--Coconut Curry Chicken (which came with a side of steamed white rice). I was very happy with the dish and definitely full from it. The service was good. I was drinking water, and they kept my glass full. The fortune cookie at the end was a nice bonus. The restaurant is casual and by no means fancy, but it exceeded my average expectations, so I give it four stars. I do not plan on waiting so long to go back. In fact, I may have to go again in the next week or so. (By the way: I parked on the street in front, but I do believe there is a lot behind and a back door you can enter.) read more

My husband and I went to Annie's Cafe when Vietnam Kitchen had a long wait. It was fine and satisfied our Pho craving but wasn't anything to write home about. We got summer rolls but the rice but the rice paper was strangely gelatinous in some places and hard in others. I think maybe they'd been made a couple days before and not been stored properly. My husband got Pho and it was okay. They only brought cilantro if you specifically requested it, which was a bit strange but maybe they were running low on it. I forgot what I ordered (largely because it was very forgettable). This place is an option if VK is closed or packed but I'd probably not make the choice to just go out to Annie's Cafe. read more

It had been many years since I had been to Annie's and I have to admit upfront that I'm a long-time Vietnam Kitchen fan. A friend and I were headed to a concert at Iroquois Amphitheater on Thurs and wanted a filling dinner beforehand. Alas, Vietnam Kitchen was closed so, I suggested going to Annie's. Entering from the back parking lot, you walk right past the kitchen and station with dirty dishes. As with most restaurants, I don't want to ruin the magic so I walk fast. We sat at one of the worn, but comfortable booths that line the sides of the room and ordered limeades to hydrate while making our selections. The menu is a bit smaller than some other local, Vietnamese restaurants, but has all the favorites - spring rolls, clay pots, pho, vermicelli bowls, banh mi. We started with shrimp spring rolls and crab Rangoon. The pair of spring rolls ($3.50) served with satay or peanut sauce were large and fresh. Maybe too large for the amount of shrimp inside? Crab Rangoon (also $3.50) was crispy, cheesy, fried goodness. I knew this morning that I'd be getting Bun Tom Nuong ($8.50). Eight, grilled shrimp with lemongrass and sesame oil in a vermicelli bowl. The regular ingredients - lettuce, bean sprouts, cucumber, cilantro, noodles - were all there. The sauce is at Annie's is slightly different than I'm used to but still good. The shrimp were large and grilled perfectly. They could've use a stronger marinade however. The veggies and herbs in the bowl weren't chopped small enough in my opinion. I also missed the peanuts (there were only a few) and mint/ basil found elsewhere. My friend loved everything about her ginger garlic beef in a clay pot ($9) served with white rice. While I'm not a convert, I do think the friendly folks at Annie's Cafe offer a solid array of affordable and tasty food from Vietnam and China. read more

Nom! Every time I come here I am rewarded within an amazing dinner. The flavors are clean and well balanced. Spice is a flavor here, not a punishment. Here's what I love: Vegetarian/vegan options are clearly labeled and expertly executed. You won't experience flavorless food! The spring rolls are fantastic with the savory peanut sauce. It's in a sweet little area. The service is great! And the flip side: My compatriot in flavor exploration said that the fried rice was salty. I tasted and agreed. I also noted that it was dry. The coconut curry (a personal favorite) could have a bit more sour and salt (according to another taster). MRS says ... food is good enough to satisfy any craving but i think need to improve on the portions. quality of food is acceptable. we enjoyed the skewered beef even though its small in size. i still prefer vietnam kitchen's avocado shake because they have pearls. no doubt Annie Cafe offers heart warming soup ~ they do have good pho broth. i opted to have the vermicelli which pleases my hunger though would have loved to have a much loaded bowl. i wasn't disappointed with the fried tofu with mixed veggies. i enjoyed it as a side dish to fill my stomach after being short on the bowl of vermicelli. given a choice, i'll drive a little down the street to vietnam kitchen. they have a lot more variety and generous portions than Annie Cafe... but i would definitely miss out on the skewered beef which is really good! read more

Went with a friend the other day on his recommendation. The owner (or Im assuming she was) was very sweet and relatable; she explained to us why her resutraunt doesnt stay open late... she's human,too, and wants to go hole after working all morning! However... she was a little pushy about me trying the crab Rangoon my friend ordered; I don't like crab, at all. I understand encouragement, especially if its something youre proud of... but after the first "No" the topic should be dropped. I had the coconut curry, which was good, but not amazing? A bit more watery and sweeter than i was used to. Pricing was fine. I thought portion sizes were good and a nice change from overly large American sizes, while still being filling. The establishment could use a little tidying up. Some of the booth chairs had large rips im them, and the floor tiles seem a bit old.
