My quest for good vegetarian pho continues and I ended up at this place by chance and ordered a vegetarian pho to-go. First impressions: very clean facility, very warm and welcoming owner (Trieck was his name) and his adorable daughter doing homework by the cash register. He very kindly explained how he understands that vegetarian pho does not have meat And that he has the Buddhist version of the pho that his mom eats. I ordered to go because I wanted to run next door to their grocery section. I love me a good Vietnamese grocery store and products from all over the world. Pho is typically eaten at the establishment to make sure that the fix-ins and the method of consumption is 10 on 10 aka it does not hold very well when transported. I was happy to find that they had done such a great job packaging all the fixings and the soup. Very generous portions. I proceeded with the taste test. I have learned from my Vietnamese friends that you never add condiments to your soup right off the bat. You must savor the soup the way it is the first couple times to truly get all the flavors in before you start adding stuff . This was excellently seasoned broth base. The base was just perfect to me. After creating the whole experience at home, I can say I truly did enjoy eating pho from here. Good vegetarian phos are hard to come by and I will definitely return to try their other delicacies. If I had a couple words of wisdom, I think the soup could use a few more pieces of vegetables and tofu. But overall, I throughly enjoyed my meal and will return. read more

This place is legit. It was so exciting walking in and seeing the grocery store that it shares the space with. When I saw a little old lady walking out with a broom they were selling at the grocery, I knew I was in the right place. I stayed pretty safe with my order, just getting a vermicelli noodle bowl with beef. It really was delicious, and I'm kind of wishing I ventured out a little more and tried something more unfamiliar. Been wanting to try this spot for bun Bo hue and Bo tai chanh. I always crave this Hue dish but good BBH is so hard to find in Louisville. The BBH here is okay, portions are a bit small though. After a lot of bad eating and drinking, this was much needed. We found Thad they were opened on a Sunday, and both wanted pho. The broth was tasty and flavorful. The prices were also pretty decent. I really enjoyed this place. The prices are very reasonable and fair. I had the lemon grass and peanut chicken pho. I had never seen that combination before and it was really fresh tasting and delicious. There was a nice portion of the side vegetables. My friend had the pad Thai, and it was very flavorful without being too sweet, and the tofu was crispy, but not overcooked. The portion was on the somewhat smaller side. The dining room was very clean. However, I'm deducting one star because the door to the kitchen was crazy dirty which makes me a little nervous about what's on the other side. I would happily return and recommend this place to anyone who likes fresh good Vietnamese food. read more

Great little place for a quick no fuss phó and Bahn mi . Not many choices for the Bahn mi sandwiches but they are good for under 7 bucks. Phó is about 13 bucks for beef slices or chicken (gá). Had lunch with my two boys and they enjoyed also. We got the fried egg rolls which were good and I we got the summer rolls also and next time will pass on those and double up on the egg rolls. Will return often and they have a Vietnamese store next door to get some random stuff. read more

Delicious! Green curry dish was missing green beans and red peppers, but did not care as the dish was delish with perfect heat and well prepared rice. The chicken fried rice was equally good. Fried ragoons as an appetizer. The restaurant is not fancy, just serving up authentic meals. Very clean interior and surprisingly not packed, but we did see a lot of to go business. Vietnamese food in Louisville has been a mostly disappointing experience since moving to the city. This cuisine is my absolute favorite, so extra disappointing for this gal. And then enters A Chau. Bless bless bless your heart, A Chau! I've been here twice and was equally impressed both visits. During my most recent experience, I tried Bun Rieu (Crab & Tomato Noodle soup). I've had this dish before and did not recall so many different cuts of meat in it, which was exciting to see in this steaming bowl of goodness. It was chock full of crab balls, pork, blood cakes, tofu, tomatoes, and rice noodles. And really brought "the funk" with fermented shrimp paste flavoring the broth. My last meal here was Bun Bo Hue which was just as impressive! It ranks up there with some of the best I've had! No ambience to speak of, but is that really why we go to Vietnamese restaurants anyway? This place is not to be missed! read more

They would have been a 4 star review but our group had one person who was not served his meal till most had nearly finished eating and they were not that busy. The dinning area is modiste but clean. Plenty of menu choices I chose the Bun Bo Hue soup tradition style witch included beef shank , blood sausage and pork patties. The broth was very flavorful because this was my first time trying blood sausage having nothing to compare it with I found it good but not sure I would have it again. If they were closer to me I would definitely be back to try many other menu items. Any time I'm near I'll give them a chance to do better and show they can improve the poor service. read more

I consider myself pretty worldly; I've been all over (the world) and have tried multitudes of different foods but I honestly do not know if I've had Vietnamese food before.  The good news in this sad state (what do they call this..."first world problems) of affairs is I had in on Feb 13 and it was delicious.  I guess I've had Thai many times, but I never ordered the 'right' things - I always ordered things that I couldn't eat because the spice was too great for my taste buds and ended up going home with others as their takeout. Unlucky for me. Vietnamese is like a lighter fare - the vegetables are fresh; the meat is thinly sliced but not fatty or processed and the noodles are good. The sauce isn't syrupy nor sweet. It has a good flavor but isn't overbearing rather adds something to bring the dish together. The restaurant is quaint and cozy with chairs and tables.  The large windows shine a wonderful natural light into the restaurant space.  There is one person waiting on tables, serving food and checking all the customers - one person. So if you're expecting a quick bite; this is not the place.  But if you have an hour; treat yourself to this Vietnamese treat. read more

Delightful experience. We went on a Saturday night around 7:00 and it was pretty quiet. In fact we were the only people who ate in the place while we were there (however there were some carryout customers). We came out on a late Wednesday night and the vibes were so calm and sweet when no one else is around I felt like I was just eating in my house. There wasn't a lot of meat in the pho but for only $8 I think it was completely fair. I would not get the banh mi again and overall I've had better viet/thai foods before but it's so affordable and the people working there are so kind. One of the workers crochets and sells keychains at the front and we left with matching squid game keychains that are too cute!! read more

No frills, all food and friendly service. This is exactly what I wanted. Louisville has quite a few Vietnamese restaurants. I have been to them all. But they have all been good at one thing but lacking in another. A-Chau has finally filled that void for me. A Chau has the best version of exotic bun rieu: the big bowl of crab broth flavored with tomatoes and filled with rice noodles. The smell was so homey as it sat in front of me. Their version also comes with sliced pork belly, meatballs, fried tofu and...drumroll...blood cakes! These are tender as can be. I know blood cubes can sound sanguineous, terrifying to the uninitiated. But they have more bark than bite when compared to say, the small dollop of purplish shrimp paste on top of the pile of goodness. This is the powerful stuff, like anchovy paste x 10! Mix it in if you dare. It really makes a tasty difference! I also had to try their cha gio as I do at every Vietnamese restaurant. I have finally found my favorite version here. It is filled with pork, shrimp and noodles. There are no filler cabbage or bean sprouts. An order is 2 for $3 only! The service here is so friendly and warm, too! *I'm looking at you, Thuy Van.* The gentleman that waited on me did not speak the same language as I do, but we made do with pointing and smiling. I felt at home despite only being able to say thank you to him. I can't wait to come back to try their Bun Bo Hue, too. And did I mention the price? Everything is at least $2-$3 cheaper than Vietnam Kitchen. But the quantity does not suffer. read more

Solid thai/viet food in Louisville. Been craving asian food so came here with my parents. Fairly big space and there is a viet market next door, seems to be owned by the same company/people maybe? Food: Spring rolls - can't really mess those up they were nice and crispy great appetizer. Usually a go to anytime i go to a viet place Pho - not as much meats given as NY super or special bowls but sufficient. Broth was flavorful and comes witth the usual fix ins of bean sprouts, basil, lime. Add in some siracha youre golden! Basil fried rice - another go to for me sooo yum! Just the right amount of oil since i know ppl tend to worry about this with asian food. Pad see mao - this is like a version of chow fun because it is the fat noodles. They were too sticky/stuck together so it made the dish less flavorful as not all the noodles were covered in sauce or spices. And didn't really taste as good as I have had it at other restaurants. This was the only dish i didn't like as much. Needed a little extra or something. I had to add a good amt of hot sauce. Combination rice dish - substantial amount of food with an egg, rice, veggies and pork chop. Pork chop was cooked well my dad enjoyed this. What can I say about A Chau that the other reviews haven't already said? This place is wonderful! It's a no frills establishment in a little strip mall attached to a Vietnamese grocery. Full disclosure: Be prepared to wait for your food. There are only a few people working both back and front of house as it's family run. The wait, however, is worth it. My husband and I shared the Vietnamese Egg Rolls. They were cooked perfectly, were right out of the oil, and had a ton of flavor. I 100% would order these again. My husband chose the Pho Special (beef, brisket, tripe) and he devoured it. He had a bit of cold and this was the perfect dish to perk him right up. I chose the Pan Fried Pho Noodles with shrimp. Yummmm...so flavorful and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Side note: The Thai iced tea was so, so refreshing. A lighter version of green tea. We'll DEFINITELY be back! read more

How many times have I driven past this place before I realized that A Chau is MORE than a grocery store? About 11 years worth. Anyways, I went on a week long Pho bender because I was suffering from a cold, and Pho is just healing. When you first walk in the floor plan is totally open, but you don't see the kitchen at all. You hear people working in the kitchen, but you don't see the kitchen. I ordered the spring rolls, which I gotta say, the sauce was killer! So complex, thick, and delicious. The roll itself was good, but was HEAVY on a basil of some sort that tasted like it flowered too long (strong, black licorice taste). Once I removed some of that, I enjoyed the roll more. The pho was heavier on noodles than broth - I prefer more broth but I know we all have our preferences. I feel like there could've been a bit more meat, but flavor wise it was tasty. The price was better than the other places in town, but the portion is slightly smaller. I want to try the other items on the menu, but for a sick day lunch, this just about hits the spot! read more

Definitely a hole in the wall that you don't want to miss. Ordered take out and I got the Vermicelli bowl with grilled shrimp and two orders of shrimp spring roll. The portions were good, there could have been more veggies in the vermicelli bowl but that wasn't a big deal to me. I gave them a 5 star because the spring roll sauce was hoisin and peanut sauce mixed with nuoc Cham which I haven't had before and it was wonderful.
