I am no longer a "Let's go down town to hang out" person. We were on a double date had finished a movie now wanted drinks and something to do. Our friends had heard about Anodyne from a friend, good place for pool which is what we were looking for. I dragged by feet and resisted but glad I joined. So we split up headed down town and had ourselves a great night. Just a note it's actually upstairs lol be sure to have IDs out as they carded all of us To get a table you have to go to the bar far left where there is a board, they write down your name and you wait. It's $6 an hour no matter how long. Good thing about where you put your name for pool, you can also order drinks. I asked for a vodka tonic but their tonic hose was down, the bartender (wish I got her name cause she rocked) volunteered water or sprite. I declined and decided I'd go for the gusto... Tangeray gin martini, straight up with 4 olives. She got it PERFECT!!! She even helped my sister find a beer she'd like. The price for 4 drinks (2 beers and 2 mixed) was super reasonable beyond belief and that excellent service wow. We found a table to hang out by - they have plenty of tables but with no limit it can be a while. We chatted caught up. Probably 20 minutes and we got called. From there it was nothing but fun. It wasn't super loud so me and my sis could chat while the guys played. We do wish there was a food truck around. We were starving!! The bar downstairs had tacos we brought up no problem but maybe advertise as an option or food truck. We easily would have stayed longer if there was more food options. I can't wait to go back honestly. Just the idea of parking yuck. read more

I think if I ever end up in heaven, it will look like this. Which is weird, because...Albuquerque. BUT HEAR ME OUT YELPSTAZ: 1) DOGS. There were between five and ten dogs here the night I stopped by. Which was a Monday. We asked the bartender: "What's the deal with the dogs? Can anyone bring theirs in?" to which he replied, "Yeah, only the cool ones though." Giving credence to his statement was the enormous St. Bernard belly up to the bar. He was a cool dog; in retrospect, I should have bought him a shot. 2) BOOKS. The bar was separated into several really cool nooks, including one with these great retro wrap-around Tony Soprano booths and rows and rows of bookshelves. 3) BOURBON. Ok, I love me some bourbon. My liver...not as much. However, I told him to STFU because there was $6 Woodford Reserve to be had. Of which we had a lot, expertly made into a very good Manhattan. 4) CLIENTELE. Everyone there was super chill and having a great time. We struck up a convo with the lady next to us at the bar and she was super kind and gave my friend and I numerous recommendations to try in Albuquerque. Yay! Bonus points: Free jukebox with lots of music, none of which I was hip enough to know. But if you're a ~cool~ hipster type, you'll probably love it. I would go back to ABQ just for this bar. This place is the spot I have been seeking out. A place that is understated coolness and dark. A place a poet could call their lair. Somewhere you could go all alone to think or write, or with friends to and ramble and dream. Drinks are strong, staff is chill, atmosphere breeds creativity. Just no beers on tap.No food available- artists don't need to eat! No drink menu either. They do however accept credit cards.I was beginning to think that Albuquerque did not have any bars like this- I was wrong. This is the only bar I can get my hipster, I-now-live-in-New-York and punk, I'm-so-ostracized-from-the-world guy friends to visit with me when I'm in town. Given the other options, I'm not terribly surprised, but perhaps these endorsements will be all the encouragement you need to visit Anodyne. Go up the stairs, into a dimly-lit bar filled with pool tables and anticipate a night of hanging out, BS-ing with friends, and maybe playing a few games of pool (there's room at the bar to sit and tables around the room as well if you're more interested in not playing pool). Oh Anodyne, how many blurred memories do I have of your pool tables and stiff drinks? If you are looking for 'The Place' in Albuquerque to mingle and meet up with, well pretty much everyone else in Albuquerque, this is it. Sometimes this place gets so packed that I am afraid that it's going to come crashing down into the first story and crush poor Mickey who is always there to greet you at the bottom of the stairs. Every time I go to Anodyne I end up seeing at least 3 people I know. I love that if you can get a seat near the windows you can watch all the people downtown milling around and (sometimes) getting arrested. This is exactly the place that you want to be if you are not exactly into the booming thump of techno music but you still have a tolerance for decibel levels not recommended by the Surgeon General. read more

Great drink prices and lots of pool tables. The atmosphere is perfect for a chill night with friends. The stairs are extremely steep so please do not attempt to walk up them if you are already under be influence. There is a lot of tables and seats too which is prime for any place especially downtown. Also, came last night with some friends and realized how generous they are with alcohol. LIKE EXTREMELY GENEROUS! There's no way to get around it. This is one of the most original hipster bars in Albuquerque. Yet it's not a fad and there's no sacrifice of character. It is absent of any snobbery and mostly hipster in dress code only. In fact I'll say it's one of the most friendliest bars in the area, if not the outright favorite. It can be a little disorienting on the weekends because it is a great casual bar in a sea of downtown dance clubs and hot spots. The first thing you'll notice is the space. There's plenty of room even with all the pool tables. But you really, really cannot get the full effect of this bar by going at night. It opens late so during the winter months you'll never be able to tell, but go early on a summer evening and it's like a whole new bar. They have a lot of great green foliage hanging from the ceiling. They have a lot of artwork and old gizmos and gadgets. They have star wars action figures embedded in their tables. I've been going for years, but when I went early while the sun was still up it was like a whole new experience. And last but not least, the bartenders won't spare you a weak pour. Not by a long-shot. A very chill bar with the best music playing that I've heard in Albuquerque. They have about ten (good) beers on tap an a great selection of bottles. There are many pool tables that are all of great quality. Don't want to shoot pool? There are plenty of places to lounge while you enjoy the local Marble IPA on tap. As if that wasn't enough, the tables all have cool things like action figures epoxied in them, there are a couple pinball machines, and people seem to like to bring their dogs there. I have a lot of fun just hanging out here and almost always get the $3 beer special of the night. It's fun and makes the choice easier. Their mixed drinks are also very strong and a great value. I enjoy playing pool here a lot and the tables are a bit needing maintenance but decent. It's a very long wait however on a weekend. Is this my favorite bar in Albuquerque.. No. But Anodyne is still good. I agree with other reviewers that it is more of a hipster bar, but the cool thing is that you can bring your well behaved dog. The Distillery across the street has free pool, so I don't tend to want to go to Anodyne as much when I know I can play for free about 50 feet away. The drinks are pretty good though and I've yet to see it too packed, which I like. read more

Pretty cool bar...I'm not much of a pool player, so that holds little appeal for me, but I enjoyed the vibe here, nice decor - especially the hanging plants, huge selection of beer, very spacious with plenty of seating. The bartender was a bit unpleasant (or perhaps I was just put off by the fact that I couldn't surprise my friends with drinks, I had to bring them up to the bar to recite what they wanted themselves), but I had a good time here on a night out in ABQ. It is definitely a casual atmosphere, but still very stylish - probably one of the more hipster locales I have encountered in NM thus far. Full bar. Lots of pool tables. Not divey at all. More of a hipster vibe. I have seen people come in here just to per use the comfy couches and study while knocking back a beer or two. Oh Anodyne, I have I had the best and the worst of times here. I would best describe this place as my real life "MacLaren's" from How I Met Your Mother. I've been coming here for a few years now and it is still one of my favorite bars in ABQ. This is a college aged/hipster mecca type of place. Definitely a bar for twenty somethings. You walk in to see the many pool tables that you pay per hour to use. They also have booths/tables you can sit at and some couches that look like they've been around for 20 years. It's fairly dimly lit and can be very loud. It is a very casual bar; the ONLY dress code rule they have is that white shoes aren't allowed. I would love to give this place a five star rating since it is after all one of my favorite bars, but the drinks just aren't up to par for that. Some drinks can be very good from here, while others are terrible. Some of my favorites are grasshoppers, moscow mules and the baby Jesus (which is an Anodyne creation.) The bad drinks I've had were just too strong. They free hand the amount of alcohol they put into the drinks, which could explain the bad and the inconsistency in the drinks. They do allow dogs here. I see this as a good and bad thing. It's nice for people to be able to bring their dog in when it's not busy, but I've seen some dogs become terrified because of the noise level. Please leave skittish dogs at home because it can get very busy here. read more

Visited here twice during my recent trip out west.... on the recommendation of YELP, which never seems to let me down. First visit was fantastic with an awesome pool tab (yeah to the fiberglass cues, red chalk, and extra bouncy cushions!) and a fabulous glass of Java beer (I think that was the name) on draught....bartender was very nice... a woman... didn't catch her name... Second visit was pretty good, but the beer wasn't as good - different tap, different bartender? And the Hoff saw a cockroach scamper across the bar when he returned the pool balls... but hey it's a dark bar, where I'd never go to eat... we also played some pinball...both of us are far from Tommy-esque in our pinball play. Ah home sweet home, I think I spend more time at this place than my apartment! First off, the entire staff is amazing, everyone from Doug and Jeanette the bartenders to Rob the door guy, is a super neat-o good time. It's dimly lit, has green couches and the drinks are made perfectly, what more could you want from a bar? It is also one of the few places in downtown that you can actually bring your dog and have a pizza delivered to. Also, don't let the stairs mislead you, there is an elevator to make it wheelchair accessible. So stop by, order a Millennium Falcon, and say hi to me sitting at the bar. read more

The atmosphere is very relaxed with beautiful plants & greenery, a bookcase jam-packed with romance novels (although reading them may be a little difficult because the lighting is dimmed), themed tables with trinkets locked inside, and a truly inspired jukebox! Anodyne is really a staple bar in downtown. They have a very interesting environment. There are pool tables, LOTS of them, lots of seating and very interesting decor throughout the bar. It looks like someone who had a lot of nicknacks and hobbies made this place and used their stuff to decorate everything. Not in a bad way, it's really cool and gives the place a cool vibe. Head to Anodyne any night of the week and you'll find a lot of people having a great time. I will admit, however, that sometimes I don't feel like I'm not hipster enough for this place. Anyone can have a good time here, but the bar definitely attracts a more hipster scene than some other bars. Getting a drink can take awhile sometimes, due to the size of the bar. They sometimes have table service, which helps, but otherwise you'll be standing in line for a few min. They have lots of beer, which is awesome. I'll always be thankful to Anodyne for introducing me to my favorite cider, R.K. Scrumpy's, which may by $9 a bottle, but it's totally worth it. read more

From the options walkable from the business district in ABQ, Anodyne is one of the closest bars. It has a laid back vibe with a bunch of couches, tables, book shelves, and plants. The main room boasts decent sized tables for groups and a modest attempt of privacy in some areas. Whilst trying to project a vintage feel, the decor desperately needs an upgrade; one can only guess where the outdated, poorly kept couches came from. They need to burn those and buy new ones ASAP. Despite the grunge, this establishment provided decent entertainment playing pool and drinking with friends. Modest beer selection and fair prices. It took me a while to find it but this is probably the best bar in the downtown area. Once you walk up the stairway to heaven (yes, it takes that long), you'll find a few well kept red felt regulation sized pool tables which you can reserve at the bar for a couple bucks and your drivers license. There is plenty of seating and you can typically find the hip, younger crowd here. The beer selection is the best in town and you can find several locals on tap and an assortment of bottles. I didn't order any mixed beverages but they do have a full selection. The jukebox plays everything from The Roots to AC/DC. If i could change one thing about this place, i would make it mandatory to keep pets at home. I'm sorry but your cat on a leash is not a seeing-eye dog and when did you ever need a seeing-eye dog to drink beer at a bar. Oh yeah, don't shake the greeters mickey mouse hands. read more

A pretty decent bar in Downtown ABQ. Good selection of beers on tap, and they always have the signature beer from my favorite brewery on tap, Arrogant Bastard Ale (Stone Brewing Co.). They also tend to get quite a few rare Stone seasonals on tap, so that is a definite plus. They have a large number of pool tables available, and the atmosphere is generally pleasant. I never knew that this bar even existed, and wouldn't have if it weren't for a close friend. That gives it this exclusive kinda vibe. The place is super dark, but that is definitely appropriate for a bar. There is a diverse crowd, which definitely gives you the option to make conversation with a diverse type of person. I love the fact that there are pool tables. I didn't get the chance to play, partially because I was a little intimidated by the expert players. I am not picky with beer, but this bar had quite the selection. I ordered something simple, but this would definitely be the perfect venue for someone who is looking for the perfect local brew. Another Albuquerque bar I've never been too before. It's up a long staircase above another club in a state that doesn't have too many 2 story buildings (I live in Santa Fe). The drink I had was OK, and not super expensive. This place has an interesting feel to it. It's partially a fern bar, partially a billiards place, and to my happiness have two working pinball games, one of which is the regular version of the Addams Family (Not the gold edition tho, but still one of the best pinball games that was ever released onto the market).
