A few years ago I set out on a personal mission to find the best Italian sub within a 50 mile radius of Boston. Anthony's has best Italian sub, by far. I have driven 40 minutes on a motorcycle to get one, then carried it back 40 minutes inside my jacket, where it leaked all over me... It was worth it. Since then I have attached bags to the motorcycle, and would recommend that as a transportation method, though now I will have to purchase two at a time so as not to throw off the balance of the bike. These are BIG subs, enough for two meals. The braided roll is perfection, the meats are high quality and tasty. Other results form my search, an, honorable mention to J Pace's (when they were on Devonshire) which was my staple Italian sub source when working downtown, but sorry guys, Anthony's blows you out of the proverbial Mediterranean water. read more

In my opinion for subs there is no other place but Anthony's, especially for an Italian sub! Great quality imported cold cuts, great prices and the breaded bread roll is my favorite. However, you can choose your bread in the event you feel the braided roll is overpowering. Also the subs are huge! Very satisfying! The one downfall if you even want to call it as such is that their hours are slightly limited. They are closed on Sundays, during the week they are only open until 6PM and on Saturdays until 4:30PM. But it is so worth planning accordingly and making a trip to Anthony's! They have a lot of other goodies as well that I noticed the last time I was there but I have not personally tried such as their Grab-and-Go meals and Sicilian style pizza. I'm not going to lie... I feel misled by the rave reviews on Yelp. After reading all the great things, I decided to try out Anthony's. I ordered my Italian-sandwich-shop go-to: chicken parm. The chicken cutlets are in no way homemade. In fact, they taste exactly like Purdue chicken cutlets. The marinara sauce was off (also unlikely to be homemade) and the whole sandwich was, at-best, lukewarm. I ate less than half of it and threw in the towel. If you want a good chicken parm sandwich, go to Bob's in Medford. Oh, one other thing... On the way out I noticed one of the kids behind the counter licking his fingers (his knuckles to be exact). Best Italian subs ever. I always order the large Italian with everything on a braided roll and its enough for 2 meals. They really pile on the toppings so it gets a bit messy, but its wonderful. I can't say anything bad about this place. NOTHING. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and has a good laugh with you every once in awhile. The food is delicious and inexpensive while still being enough for two lunches. Get the italian sub and load it. Even if you don't 'load' it, it will STILL be loaded. They STUFF the meats in there. And this isn't some American-Italian meat crap either. This is the Citterio, imported Italian meats. The good stuff, the REAL stuff. Every now and again, they'll also have these little contests to see if you could win a free soda/chips with your sandwich. Easy questions, especially if you're even slightly Italian. We came here because of the glowing reviews. I, then, realize I had been here before and had an awful chicken parmesan sub that I could barely stuff into my already small mouth. I remember the chicken being dry with soggy bread. But, whatever! Maybe I was just having a bad day. Today I ordered the meatball sub. It contained giant meatballs, white bread, grated cheese, and tomato sauce. I mean, it was a meatball sub, so you can't go wrong, but it wasn't out of this world that most of the reviews claim. Grabbed a tuna, meatball and Italian last week, all on braided rolls. All were great and easily shareable for a family of 5! Line was a little long, but not surprising for a weekday during the lunch rush. Anything great is worth waiting for! The guys making the sandwiches were all very courteous and accommodating. They engaged in some friendly banter with the regulars, but were just as kind with us newbies. Will definitely be back. read more

I've eaten at Anthony's many, many times and the food is always outstanding. From buffalo chicken cutlet subs to Italian subs to pulled pork or chili, I've never had a bad experience. The food is always top notch and they give very healthy portions. You won't be disappointed in the amount of meat they put in your sandwich, that's for sure. The service is great too. WOW the italian sub here is excellent and HUGE! You could easily stretch this sub to 2 if not 3 meals (although I must admit I often finish it in a single sitting). They had me at Sicilian-style pizza available by the slice, right at eye-level when I got to the counter. Tack on a grape soda and some chocolate-covered pretzels for dessert and I'm one happy lady.
