I ADORE this local bookstore! When I worked on the avenue I would try to stop in at least once a month and now I just try to get in there whenever I can. They have the best variety of books one can ask for and the best part is they even give away free books! They have a section of free books you can choose from when you make a purchase of other books. I try to shop for everyone in this little spot because they have so many trinkets, toys, notecards, journals and much more, basically something for everyone. And if you refuse a bag they donate to local charities - win win! read more

This bookstore has a particular niche with a wonderful selection heavy in feminist literature and LGBT related materials. Although I don't fit into either category, I still come here often to purchase gifts, find great notebooks, browse the book selection (excellent fiction and a bargain rack of books), and super knick knacks. Great for kids too. I often wind up with something for myself here. I'm so glad this bookstore is here and perfectly located on 4th. It's a mainstay for Tucson! read more

I love wandering down 4th Ave to this bookstore on a weekend morning stroll. Their quirky variety of books (my favourites that I came across were Filthy Shakespeare and Goodnight, Keith Moon; I also once found Toilets of the World) always perks up my day. Look, this is a sweet little bookshop with a surprising variety packed cozily into its little corner of 4th Ave., not to mention the terrific collection of eclectic gifts and one-of-a-kind cards. When I need to get a gift, I go here for a book and knick-knack combo topped off with a beautiful card. They even have wrapping paper. read more

Antigone Books is a great, small business. They have so many books and organized into great little sections, as well as a variety of gifts, blank books, CDs, and bumper stickers. I recently wanted some books they didn't have, so they ordered them for me. The books arrived in less than a week. The staff there is always helpful, always sweet, and knowledgeable. When I leave Tucson, I'm going to miss the pants off of Antigone, and when I come back to visit it will be my great pleasure to make it a stop. read more

I love a good, locally owned bookstore. I'm so glad my friend took me here during my visit to Tucson last week. Antigone is in the middle of a bunch of "head shops" and actually sells things of substance. I knew my suitcase was already overcrowded, so I didn't purchase any hardback books. They have a great selection of books and I'm jealous I can't join the book club. Antigone also has a great selection of locally-made items and I picked up some for souvenirs. The soap made with Arizona wild honey is a must! If you're in town, definitely stop in and check out this place! read more

This is the best little shop down fourth! I once had to go for some textbooks and the employees are the friendliest folk ever no matter how busy they are! It's not the hugest selection of books but the have a great selection of new books and journals and other cool Knicknacks! Love this bookstore :) read more

I shopped at Antigone Books when I lived in Tucson 14 years ago. I continued to shop there on visits after I moved away. I won't go back. I bought about $100 worth of books from them just last week on a visit to Tucson. I wanted to return one of the books but they refused to refund my money; the best they would do was a store credit. I explained I didn't live there and visited infrequently but they would not budge. They just said the credit lasted forever. Really. I finally exchanged for another book. Now, they were voted "best bookstore" in Tucson by the Tucson Weekly but I dispute this recommendation. I feel it is bad business to forfeit a customer for $22. If that is how Antigone chooses to do business, they won't have mine anymore - ever. I was very disappointed by their rigid, inflexiblle, customer-unfriendly policy. The Tucson Weekly should better know whom they are recommending in future. I would not recommend this 'bookstore' to anyone. Caveat emptor. read more

I love the spiritual selection here. Motivational to lifestyle books...they have books for most personal tastes in literature as well as knick knacks and cards/stationery. There is a great selection of books, of course, but there's also a wonderful array of eclectic items along with locally crafted or handmade items. Antigone Books is not only one of my favorite places in Tucson, it's one of my favorite places in the world. My heart breaks that my time at the University of Arizona is almost over and I can't take Antigone back with me to Cali. Visiting this bookstore has been the joy of my life in Tucson. The wide variety of books, journals, local items, and even novelty items, are what make this place amazing. I only hope I can squeeze in some time for a few more visits before I move back home. read more

This is the best bookstore ever! I am so in love with this place. I grew up in Tucson, but I live in California now. I went to this bookstore almost everyday after school at Tucson High. They have a great selection of all kinds of books. The have an impressive selection of children's books as well as queer books. They also have journals and trendy gifts. read more

The thing I love most about this place is that they have comfy couches and chairs!! The place offers a variety of books many I expect you would not find in your average Barnes and Nobel, which makes it more fun to go there!! Its even a nice place to just sit and read in peace for an hour or so. Everyone who works there is extreamly kind and friendly. One of my favorite spots on 4th Ave for sure. read more

Quick response to the other review commenting on the "tchotchkes" - first off, some of the gifty items at Antigone's definitely go beyond the implication - and second I appreciate that I can get witty gifts for friends as well as literature (aka novels, mags, children's books, calendars, biographies, etc.). To echo her comment though, the staff is very friendly and usefull - great gift wrapping (free) - and will special order books as well. read more

A great local bookstore with tons of trinkets and cute, unique gifts. Their prices on books are pretty average although they do have a small used book section with books that are about 50% off. They have a small parking lot next to their store for customers of Antigone and 4th Avenue. I definitely recommend this bookstore for unique gifts! read more

I wish they devoted a little more space to books and less to toys and novelty items, but otherwise this is a great store. I especially appreciate the diverse and thoughtful staff recommendations. Costs a little more than Barnes & Noble or Amazon, but well worth it for the much better shopping experience. (And by the way, using a store like Antigone to find what you want to buy and then ordering it from Amazon to save a few bucks? Pathetic!) read more

One of my favorite five bookstores in the country and that's no exaggeration. Really a great crew running the place. They will bend over backwards to find and order you anything. I just completed a long distance purchase of a T-shirt (they have great T-shirts) with Kate and she couldn't have been more fun or more efficient. Asside from their unique and absorbing books, They have the best refrigerator magnets and Darwin fish you can get. I feel great every time I support this place. read more

Fantastic selection of books, cards, and mostly paper goods. I wanted to buy all the books in the store. The only thing is none of the staff asked us if we needed help or anything. Very hands off and it wasn't busy in there. I agree with another yelper that there wasn't a selection of used books. It would have been nice is someone engaged us in a conversation of book choices/suggestions. Otherwise a beautiful book store and nice location. read more

Antigone is a place that I'll go to every once in a while for small gifts or trinkets. Every time I've been there I've left happy with my experience. However today I found myself leaving quite upset and embarrassed. I purchased a small heart ornament and a single bell to decorate my grandma's grave for day of the dead, upon checking out I asked if I could keep the small wire display hook so I'd be able to hang the items on the tree next to her grave. Instead of a simple yes or no answer the clerk very awkwardly said, "I guess you can have it, we don't give them away with the items usually, they're not very pretty but i guess you can have it" and reluctantly handed me the hook. I told her never mind, it obviously seems like a big deal and placed the hook back on the counter. I turned to walk away and the entire time I was leaving she was shouting at me to just take the hook if I really wanted it. The hook was worth pennies at the most, and that isn't even the real issue. After working in customer service for years myself I can say this, you never know what kind of day someone is having. Small courtesies are always appreciated and go a long way. I still think this is a great local shop, but I am very displeased with the service I was given today. read more
