I came to this place the other day on the recommendation of my sister-in-law! Before I went I asked my brother if it's worth the trip as I live on the north side! He just said ..." just go.. you'll love it!" He recommended the carne asada ( Tampiqueña ) dinner ! I went with my sisters! We we're blown away!!! Visited this spot during lunchtime randomly. When we arrived we were given two salsas, chips, and the spicy pickled carrots and jalapeños. We ordered steak tacos, steak sopes, and barbacoa tacos. The food was very good and the portions were normal. The large horchata is HUGE! After our meal, the waitress said to save room for dessert. I thought she was kidding but she wasn't. They give you arroz con leche (rice pudding) complimentary. For all of that food, we paid $25 before tip. We're glad we stopped at this place to eat. The interior of the restaurant is colorful and has character. They serve alcoholic drinks as well. It's a bit on the smaller side with about 10-12 tables. But it's worth it. Well, I have to say that the 1st couple of months that I was eating the food the tacos were very delicious. But, one (because I gave them one more try & decided to give them another chance) & the second last time I order them there were just not the same anymore. It was like there meat had changed. It wasn't just me my husband felt the same way. I always order al pastor (pork tacos) & I order my son a asada (steak) & my husband a Huarache with carne asada (steak). The meat is just not the same anymore. So, I had to move on from Dona Maria's. It might have other food selection that are good which I haven't tried but the tacos no longer taste good to me. Got the queso mexicana, which turned out to be a plate of rubbery melted cheese with some watery tomatoes & green peppers thrown on it. Cheese huarache: the beans seemed to be canned and the thick tortilla just eh not flavorful. So disappointing after first trying the dish at Los Corrales a few days ago- they nail it. You always get a free little appetizer of a small spicy porkbelly taco and a small free dessert of rice pudding. The service is pretty good when they are not too busy, on the weekends when they are busy service is still good, you just wait a little longer for your food. The food is very spicy so if you order something spicy- eat at your own risk lol! I always tease that the chef is angry lol but the sauce is so good it will leave you wanting more. I have been known to take my left over hot sauce to go! I usually order the Lomo en chile de arbol and ask for sour cream to help cool the heat. I have also tried the Shrimp cocktail and you get a lot of shrimp, and the camarones a la diabla which I will provide a picture. They have a cool veggie fruit juice called a Vampiro that is amazing! You also get a small complementary dessert, usually arroz con leche(Mexican rice pudding) it is good! The food can be on the spicy side but it is flavorful and portions are big. I love the red chilaquiles, their pozole, and the rajas conqueso gorditas. For those that don't know a gordita is a fat tortilla stuffed with your choice of meats or my favorite, is the melted cheese with poblanos pepper, you add a little salsa and yum! The red salsa are spicy but recently they added a new green salsa which I love and it is not too spicy. Awesome Mexican food, great prices, nice portions, and the staff is always friendly. read more

Could be the best pozole I've ever had. I've eaten at A LOT of Mexican restaurants. The pozole has layers of flavors and different kinds of pork including rib meat and to my delight some ham hock. The chips are crispy and not oily. They serve with 3 types of salsas. Try the orangey colored one if you like spicy. Hot enough to make my nose run but not painful. They also give you the spicy carrots and give you a little teaser taco. For dessert, they give you this soupy sweet cinnamon tasting mushy rice concoction. This is an authentic restaurant. Dined in today for the first time and was very disappointed. I ordered the chicken fajitas and when the plate arrived it looked very delicious. I took one bite and had to spit the chicken in my napkin. The chicken had a bad taste to it and was rubbery. The waitress never brought my tortillas, but that was ok because I wasnt going to eat the food anyways. When another server came over and seen my plate was full she asked if I wanted a box. I said no thank you, I really didnt care for it. She looked annoyed and walked away. Never offered me to try something else or even apologized.
