So I was not ready to spend big money at a hair salon, nor spend all day at a Black salon. You know the ones... I am still traumatized by the 8am appointment that ended at 5pm. Anyway, my anniversary was coming up and I wanted to treat myself. I had been following JBH Studios on the gram for some time and thought I would give it a try. The owner is a proud Haitian woman like me with serious natural hair. I like what she stands for. Loved the pics with her Dad! I found her website was pretty descriptive and I didn't feel like there were going to be any surprises. I was a little scared about the lateness fees and things like that but I am a punctual person so ... When I arrived I was greeted immediately and offered water and tea. My coat was taken and I was given a robe and a name tag. I liked this immediately. I did wait a little bit and was like worried but as soon as I met Lena, my hair stylist, any fears I had went away. Lena is the most disarming person I have ever encountered in a salon. We quickly developed an easy rapport. I was having a wash, silk press and trim. End result? I didn't know how much I needed this in my life! This was a complete #BlackGirlMagic experience. The hair wash put me to sleep! The shampoo had a peppermint feeling on my scalp and Lena was gentle but firm on my messy scalp. The blow out was super gentle with little heat. Then she pressed my hair and I didn't even have to hold my ears. I never felt heat on my scalp like I normally do. Okkkuurrr! But the trim was going to be the most challenging. I didn't want a cut... and that does happen with a less experienced stylist. A trim becomes an inch or two off. Well, Lena gave me a mirror and showed me where the dead ends were and discussed her plan with me. I was in complete agreement. And she TRIMMED it exactly as she had told me. I have never felt so relaxed at a salon before. But what was the best part? Everyone in the salon was talking and being included and we were having a great time - in an upscale professional way. All the ladies there were wonderful to chat with. And when I left, my hair was EVERYTHING. It was like I was in a Breck commercial! My hair was silky and healthy and bounced when I walked down the street. I was snapping my head to look at traffic and my hair would SMACK me in my face! I even got compliments on the elevator from two Black women with natural hair, who were super excited when I told them I just got my hair done on the 4th floor! I gave them the info so they could go themselves. Overall, this was a great experience and I will be including this in my life as a treat yo'self necessity. Keep in mind that 75 minutes is a benchmark, probably but I wasn't waiting at any point except in the beginning. Also, no matter my skills, I cannot get my hair to look like this. The next morning after NOT sleeping in a hair wrap, my hair was remarkably STILL straight.

Well the woman screwed up my very formula and my roots were so much darker! If I wasn't leaving the next day, would have of course gone back. Had to go to another salon when I did get back for a color correction- which is wildly expensive. If you can't follow a simple formula when I literally hand it to you on a piece of paper- not sure what else to say :(

I didn't think much could be done so had nearly resigned myself to a bad hair year. A friend suggested extensions and I went to see Catherine after reading great reviews about her work on Yelp. From the start, she was so warm and encouraging. She found hair that perfectly matched mine in color, density, thickness (blond, thin and fine) and created a beautiful halo that looked natural. I feel like me again! I was a little worried that I'd be able to pull it off (I am relatively low maintenance) but Catherine worked with my patiently to answer all my questions and to make sure I was happy with the way it looked. It had been ten years since I had them last and I was a little bit traumatized by the experience of getting them out, as it had left my hair horribly broken and damaged. That said, they were done with synthetic hair. Real hair makes all the difference with the extent of damage to your own hair. Catherine only uses high quality hair and is an expert with weft extensions (in the past, I had pinch braid style). She works out of Uliana Hair Studio these days, a lovely salon in the East Village (I reviewed it separately). You go in for a consultation and discuss options, which include tape, sew-in or halo (non permanent). I went for sew-in as I wanted something semi permanent. My wedding was several months away and I wanted to get used to this hair thing before then. If you choose this method, you need to go in and get it maintained every 4-6 weeks to keep it looking good. The hair is so seamlessly blended with your own that you will forget that you don't actually have that perfect, thick long hair! It's so natural that you'll get more of the, "wow, your hair has grown so long" types of compliments. When I'd tell people that they were extensions, they couldn't believe it. Man, I wish my hair was this thick and healthy! I've had thin, lousy hair since I was like 11. Years of dying, flat ironing and blow drying hasn't done it any favors either. Prices are extremely fair in comparison to other salons, not only in NYC but across the country. Yes, this is an investment, but you pay for quality. It was worth it. I decided after my wedding that the sew-ins and the necessary maintenance weren't for me anymore. Catherine made my 2 wefts into a halo that I wear occasionally (OK, rarely. I've been digging the easiness of my shoulder length hair, especially in winter when long hair keeps getting caught in coats and scarves). Note that my hair was not really damaged at all after having the extensions in for 7 months. Incredible. Catherine is awesome. I appreciated that she was willing to work with me and what I needed as far as the length and thickness of the extensions (initially they were a bit too "much" for me, so she shaped them up and thinned them out a bit). I enjoyed talking to her and getting to know her on each of my visits. Oh and she is also great when it comes to dying your hair!

The salon interior is lovely and an experience in of itself: a pristine white loft on the fourth floor. It's well-designed, minimalist and sun kissed, making for a bright and lovely experience. The salon staff are efficient and so pleasant making the overall experience a boost to your day. I had a single process (with Tam) and cut (with Chen). Both were done professionally. Tam is such a pleasant and kind coiffure. Chen does an amazing blow dry and is a very talented hairdresser. He does good haircuts too. I cannot recommend both of them enough after the pleasant experience I had, right down to the thoughtfully prepared cappuccino and biscotti for their clients. The one thing that places this salon in my favourites list is the fact that they use Kerastase products which are really so agreeable with my hair type and have been a product that I have used since my 20's at hairdressers around the world. The Kerstase shampoos and conditioners brought back such nice and happy memories ... The prices range from USD 165-200 dollars for a single process. About USD 155- 258 dollars for a cut and USD 67-150 dollars for a blow dry. The only thing I would change or ask more of at this salon would be music, music, MUSIC! It's always great to have some tunes playing in the background as you get pretty or prettier, as the case maybe. Enjoy your time at Salon SCK. It's a dream to have your hair in their good hands.
