I was searching for some local sushi take-out near my house. I always pass by AO Sushi but never checked it out. I was very very pleased. I ordered through the AO Sushi website and it was easy to navigate through. I ordered the Chicago Fire Roll, Scallop Handroll, and picked up a Salmon Avocado Roll at the store. The two I ordered online was very delicious and fresh. The roll I picked up at the store was good, but didn't taste as good. The rice tasted a day old and a bit hard. The man who worked at the front was very friendly and really helpful. There are a few tables to eat at and is very clean. I love the whole layout of the store and the selection of different sushi rolls. I didn't know that they were owned by the same owners of Sea Ranch, which I love so much. Check this place out! It was my second time at AO sushi. The first time, I was there 10 years ago. I really loved it then but I had not been able to go as this place is out of my way. This time around I ordered food to go and although it was not bad, I am not sure that it was great either. We called and placed an order for pick up and they said that it would be ready in one hour. ONE HOUR? Were they going fishing? What takes so long? Anyway, we got several of their specialty rolls. We got the Hana, caterpillar, dragon and godzilla roll. We also ordered their basic ones such as spicy tuna and shrimp tempura roll. The specialty rolls were good but but the basic ones were some of the worst rolls I have ever eaten. They were so stale and so fishy tasting, I was surprised. I have to say, it should take 1 hour to make stale rolls. They do have DIY rolls and I need to venture out to that as it has to be a fun cooking experience with the family. If I am ever in the area, I will definitely return for the specialty rolls. Once was a great quick place to get a bento of sushi. However in the years that I've been away from Chicago they must've decided to cut some serious corners. The deluxe sushi combo was laughable. The nigiri pieces were some of the thinnest slices of fish on top of giant mounds of rice.... you might as well just be paying for rice... I've been shopping here before they changed their name to AO. I enjoy all their fresh cuts of fish, especially when they have pre-cut sections of yellow-tail collar (hamachi kama) which I take home and sear to perfection. They have pre-made fresh sushi that I just grab if I am in a hurry or have time to spare, I just wait for custom ordered rolls. Definitely the best place for fresh sushi or sashimi in that area. Sushi without the fuss. AO provides great sushi for home consumption. Your best bet is to order ahead and pick it up. I really like the selection of rolls and the quality has always been quite good. It seems to be busy enough to keep the fish moving, so I've never had any reservations about it not being fresh. They offer a reward system with stamp cards, but honestly, it is almost comical how many stamps you need to get something like a $5 discount. I've eaten sushi from here two nights in a row. It's that good, and that affordable. Their spicy scallop hand rolls, $5 each, are enough to get me out of my fleece and into my car. Spicy scallop hand rolls are my sushi benchmark, I'm very particular about how they're made. They can't be too saucy, and I expect to have some scallop in every bite, all the way down to the bottom of the cone. These guys nailed it! Best I've had in Chicago! Oh, and the Illinois roll, with escolar, avocado, cucumber and spicy sauce? Such a simple combination, but perfectly executed. Both texture and flavor were fantastic. The rice is perfect, not grainy, not chewy, not mushy, really wonderful. Everything is so fresh, service is wonderful, prices are fantastic. It's a takeout joint, so don't go expecting the fancy Zen-like atmosphere and softly running waterfalls...but definitely check out the turf covered mantle housing the TV in the dining area. Fresh. Quick. Cheap. I can eat it in the comfort of my own home. Sushi heaven. My parents found this place when we were teenagers. Mom would grab some slabs of salmon... pick out some rolls... and it would be sushi heaven for dinner. As an adult Ive come to appreciate it more. This is my go-to local sushi spot. The fish is fresh and it's far more affordable than most of the local sushi restaurants. The staff is always really nice and really my only complaint is the bizarre hours. I wish they had longer hours, as we are always rushing to get the prior to closing. My favorite dinner is the Sushi Deluxe, which is about 7 pieces of nigiri and a couple half rolls. It's a great deal for $12. We have been ordering sushi from AO for years. The fish was always fresh and good quality, especially for the price point. They also offer low carb options, which Inhave enjoyed. However, it seems as though within the last year, the quality of the fish isn't what it used to be. In particular, I am finding the fish has become fatty, to the point where I cannot eat a piece or two (or three recently) of a maki that I ordered, which is very disappointing because 1/4 or 1/3 of the roll is not edible. We have been to AO Sushi dozens of times and it is our go to place for sushi. Coming from NY it was hard to find a place that we liked, but we are glad we found this one. The staff and service are great and we really enjoy the sushi. The staff went above and beyond tonight. My son asked for a lollipop and they were all gone, which was fine. As we were leaving one of the young ladies came over to the car with a brand new bag of lollipops for my son to chose from. Totally unexpected and we were both blown away. This is my favorite sushi place! I never go anywhere else. It's more of a pick up place than anything else. It's also part market where they have some premade items and a table against the window with maybe 5 to 6 chairs. What really made it exceptional today was they take the last order at 7:30 because they close at 8 PM on Saturday. I accidentally didn't hit the final order button when I was driving from Plainfield to pick up my order which is an hour drive(I was coming from a party). I got there and they were closing in 10 minutes and when I realized that I was devastated. I've been looking forward to their sushi all week. I talk to the girl upfront and let her know what happened and she talk to the chef and they were able to help me out and make me my rolls. I want to give them props for going out of their way to help me out. This is my spot, it's the only sushi spot I pick up from and I probably spend around $100 a month there.
