Walked in last night with a reservation. Sat down at a table for 4. Hostess/manager came over and said "That table is reserved." There was no sign on the table to that effect. The place was almost empty. I told the hostess that we HAD a reservation and that I was sitting there. She said "Would you like to sit by the window?" I said, "No. I'm sitting here." She stormed away. It was not a good way to start a meal. One appetizer never came and then the waitress said the chef messed it up and it came with the entrees. One appetizer was cold noodles with sesame sauce. My daughter found a piece of aluminum foil in it. The waitress came by and we showed it to her. She said, "That's a scallion." It wasn't. The Chicken Teriyaki Box was pretty decent and freshly prepared. The Bad and Ugly. The Assorted Tempura Appetizer I ordered was really outright terrible. My order of tempura was old, cold and not fit to be consumed. The shrimp inside was hard and totally dried out. The vegetable tempura was soggy and not even warm on the inside. It is a shame that this restaurant owner / manager would allow such practice to warm and serve recycled old food... this is no joke, this was an insult to me as a paying customer. Great food adore the starters every one of them from the soups,egg rolls, the boneless spareribs, the dumplings all of it. The shrimp with salt and pepper are crispy and large. I am so glad to have this place back! The restaurant was closed for almost a year due to a fire in the shopping center, but recently returned. As the local Chinese / Japanese restaurant, we order from here quite a bit. While the prices reflect it to some degree, the food quality is a large step above a typical Chinese restaurant. You can really taste it in the meat - both the chicken and the beef. Our go to dishes are the Beef with Peanuts (really excellent sauce), chicken with broccoli and the moo shu pork. And we will always add an order of the House Special Soup for 2 (or as the kids call it, Family Soup). Great broth and mix of shrimp, chicken, beef, and vegetables. The sushi is also very good quality. Have had more luck sticking to the traditional rolls (salmon avocado, spicy salmon, yellowtail scallion) than venturing into the larger, more unique rolls - have found those very hit or miss and a bit overpriced. Also, have to mention how friendly the staff is here. They are so nice to the kids when we dine in and will always ask about them when I get take out. All in all, a great operation that is an essential part of the Mendham dining scene as one of the only non- Italian options. read more

I went for lunch Sunday 3/12/2023 and ordered the special and Thai iced tea. The food was bland. The restaurant was empty except for 1 couple with a very noisy kid. I thought the kid would calm down when his food arrived, but He did not. I grew up in Mendham in 1964 and stayed until 1990. I was here before and the food was fairly reasonable. The staff are very nice and try to be accommodating. I am therefore reluctant to give a negative review. However, I found the quality of the food to be sorely lacking. My first salad had brown lettuce. It was replaced. I've never had an udon soup I didn't like until today. The noodles were gluey, hardly any vegetables and the broth had a smoky flavor that was reminiscent of the scent of a fireplace that needed cleaning. I'm surprised nobody has reviewed this place yet since it was pretty packed when we came in for lunch on Black Friday. Very tasteful interior with a 6-8 person room sectioned off towards the back. Our party of four had the sashimi boat for two, a baked ika (squid), and the black sea bass done in Chinese style with julienned green onions and ginger. Their fish is really good - thick cuts of sashimi and plenty of variety on the boat. Try the butter fish. It literally melts in your mouth. I HIGHLY recommend the ika for an appetizer. Our squid was imported from Japan and was of the smaller variety. Super tender and drizzled with a teriyaki sauce topped with ground black pepper. The black sea bass didn't really go with the rest of our Japanese meal, but as a stand-alone dish, it was solid. You can tell this place really focuses on delivering quality fish. read more

They've got all the staples, prepared very well, rice is perfectly prepared. The portions are a little on the larger side than some other places, sushi menu is updated nightly. The Aoyama roll is HUGE and included salmon, yellowtail, and tuna in rice paper. They also have some unique rolls that feature ingredients like banana, pineapple, and cashew powder. Moved to Mendham during Covid so haven't eating in yet. We have been taking out quite a bit, Chinese cuisine, and have been very happy with the service and the food. Ordered take out from this restaurant last night. Pretty disappointing to be quite honest. Have lived in the area my entire life, and one thing Mendham lacks is quality restaurants. That will probably never change. Anyway, I digress. Ordered the Pan fried dumplings, which as the menu reflects, comes with 6 dumplings. Well, I received 5. NOT a huge mistake, but it would have been, had the dumplings been amazing. They weren't. No real flavor. Also ordered the General Tso's Chicken which was also bland. While we're on the subject, when I use whatever random fork is put before me to consume an appetizer, TAKE THE FORK and bring me a fresh utensil to use. Especially in light of the fact that this is a Japanese/Chinese situation... Why is my capitalist inspired technologically advanced makers-of-the-efficient-hybrid-car appetizer mixing with what is destined to be a communist, under-cutting themed entree?? Not cool. I shouldn't have to ask for water. Just sayin'. That being said; I believe in you, Aoyama. I remember when you were a stodgy Chinese restaurant serving only stodgy customers in Mendham. I remember feeling as though I was in the cast of "A Christmas Story" as you served Sesame Chicken in a white shirt and bow tie with table cloths. I remember hearing stories of how cats would disappear in the dubious alley behind you. I never believed that, by the way. You, Aoyama, represent a new, hip alternative for the people of this region that must also become new and hip or it will die. The food is so fresh and so delicious and the presentation is absolutely beautiful. Service couldn't be better. I am so glad that this wonderful restaurant is back in business after being closed for about a year due to a fire, since my wife and I love Chinese food. This cuisine is unavailable where we live in Wisconsin, so we take full advantage of patronizing this restaurant when we are visiting our children in Chester. My wife said the Egg Drop soup was the best that she has ever had, and she also love the boiled pork dumplings. I loved both the egg rolls and the spring rolls, and the sesame shrimp was to die for. Our son loved the chicken with cashew nuts and our daughter-in-law enjoyed the steamed chicken with broccoli, a dish which I felt looked rather bland. The food here is very good. I get the chicken lo-mien, teriyaki, or sushi. No matter what I get, I enjoy it very much. I must admit, I am a bit picky about their teriyaki, especially the beef and chicken teriyakis. The Chicken Lo-Mien is good, and the sushi is good as well! The atmosphere of the restaurant is great, and the place is very nice. It is right next to the coffee shop, and it is a very nice place. First was that I ordered a chicken dish and the chicken was so tough and overcooked that I only ate about 1/4 of the meal. I did have it wrapped though, because the sauce was delicious. Second, the waitress tried to upsell us on appetizers, which I found annoying. She was a bit pushy about this appetizer special they were having, which we simply didn't want, as we had just told her what our appetizer choice was, but she was borderline insistent. Just kind of annoying. And third - the music. Loud and clubby, and then it was someone's birthday... which was celebrated by a recording blasted over the speakers. I felt like I was on a cruise ship for some reason. Weird. We frequently order takeout from Aoyama. The food is great and although it is on the expensive side, I think it is well worth it. The Mexican roll is hands-down the best sushi I've ever eaten. It's just that good. Another reason I like ordering from this place is because some members of my family do not like sushi. They get great standard Chinese food, and I get great sushi.
