I haven't actively looked for a lot of new sushi spots over the past few years after I discovered Kenko Sushi in Lincoln Park (which has gotten a little tedious with its ordering process/app that hasn't adjusted to the post-COVID world, though that's a story for another day), but this is a reminder not to rest on your laurels. This was a very pleasant surprise and has the potential to be a regular spot going forward. I came here with my chum last Saturday night for dinner. I'm not that familiar with the downtown Madison area but it was very easy to locate street parking within a block of the entrance. Interestingly, this building obviously housed a ye olde bank back in the day, but once inside, there was nothing left in the interior to suggest that past - a little disappointing they weren't able to preserve some of that history but I obviously know nothing about the back story there so grain of salt. In what ended up being a tremendous miscalculation, we ended up ordering four signature rolls to split and didn't come close to finishing them - we likely left close to half of the pieces on the plate (don't worry, they found a new home and became a secondary meal later on), which is definitely not a ding on them. Despite having hundreds of rolls in my life, calculating how quickly they'll fill me up remains a tedious work in progress. Anyway. Hopefully I remember all of these, but I believe the four rolls were the Bronx Bomber, Roe Roe Roe Your Boat (couldn't figure out if this one was a subtle political statement or not but I doubt it), Luck of the Irish and Paradise Cove. The Bronx Bomber was our favorite, and for me probably an all-time top three or so, which is saying something. It's deep fried, which I'm usually ambivalent about (sometimes by definition it's too heavy for me and takes away from the other flavors in the roll), and I was a little leery initially about the cilantro which I don't think I've encountered before in this world. Delicious and not overly fried. I brought it home thinking, oh, I can easily eat this tomorrow for lunch, and then I accidentally ate it all an hour later. Huge recommend. The other one I really loved was Paradise Cove, which had a ton of interesting vibes going on there - the diced salmon sounded a little odd but didn't end up being different from just normal salmon (I think I assumed it would be seared or something, which it definitely wasn't). There's multiple mayos, multiple fish and it's just very unique; that type of combo with so many ingredients risks being overwhelming and it was a perfect balance. The Luck of the Irish was just okay for me; my chum advocated for that one I think in honor of a certain recent holiday, and it includes cucumber, which is my least favorite sushi ingredient. Easy to get out (and I did push the pieces out before eating) but it a little bland. The Roe was my least favorite, and that was just a personal palate issue - for me, there was too much fish roe (I think I just figured out why it's called Roe Roe Roe Your Boat) on top which made it extra salty. But that's on me. Everything was fresh and plentiful, and that to me is the ultimate standard. It's rare that I'm over the moon about service when it took over half an hour to get the rolls - sushi places overall tend to have a quick turnaround time by definition, but Blue Wazabi was SLAMMED with to-go orders while we were there (the entire time, there were multiple customers waiting for their pickups). And also to be fair, we did not get mundane, normal rolls. While we waited, the staff literally filled up my water glass five times (I'd been hiking earlier in the day and was still trying to catch up) and never let the level get below 25%. I actually started paying attention to that, and I'm honestly not sure if I've ever been somewhere where they were that vigilant about it, especially given that they were very busy. Huge points though - if you don't have the ability to get the rolls over in a few minutes, intense hydration is a pleasant plan B. I might just fill up on Bronx Bombers next time, which as a Mets fan makes me a little uncomfortable but it is what it is. read more

Let me start by saying the menu is robust, there's sushi, hot appetizers, rice and noodle dishes...there's something for everyone on there. Rock shrimp tempura appetizer: Delicious. Perfectly crispy with a great citrus spicy mayo sauce to dip the shrimp in. Sushi lunch (2 rolls w/ choice of soup or salad): Got the miso soup which hit the spot on a cold day. Went with the Salmon avocado roll and spicy tuna rolls that I enjoyed. They were pretty sizable rolls, too. Special roll: We really liked this roll but not entirely sure what it was called. Ok so I do work in town and have eaten here quite a bit. I usually get the same thing but I have been meeting a friend there on Mondays and we have decided to try everything on the menu hahaha! I am a bit behind on this so here's what we had so far! Apps: Scalloped Brussel Sprouts, Duck Roll, Black Cod Orange Miso, Calamari I'll just say real quick, there's nothing special about the calamari. Just basic calamari with thai chili sauce. It was good but nothing to holla about. The SAUCE on the scalloped brussel sprouts was soooo goood. That whole little dish was really amazing. Duck roll was interesting but it was really good as well. Ok.... please do not miss the Black Cod Orange Miso... melts in your mouth and again... the sauce! They are pretty great at making sauces. Rolls: Tropicalogy, Racoon and Renaissance These rolls were so delicious, Great presentation and the colors are beautiful. Very fresh in taste. I want to reorder them but we have a lot more to try haha. Definitely try that Renaissance roll! Today is Monday, so going there now to try more! Ok so I just went. We got: Cheese Wontons, they were really good BUT it was served with Thai chili sauce which isn't horrible but it's so much better with the red sweet and sour sauce which is the typical sauce. Still a great app! We also got the Volcano Eruption which was delightful. Food was not that good, Got a shrimp tempura udon and the broth was flavorless except for the taste of broccoli. The Kiss my Bass roll was also not that great. The fish was definitely cooked then frozen because water was coming out of it and caused everything to be kind of wet. The service was fine, waitress kept checking on us and asking if we were good and needed anything else. The food is all fresh-tasting and great. - Agedashi Tofu : Crunchy outside, soft inside, nice light sauce. I personally would prefer some more shaved bonito on it (that's my jam.) But if you like Agedashi Tofu, this is good. - Tricolor TarTar : This had salmon, tuna, and white tuna with avocado and a creamy sauce with some roe. It was good. Fish was super fresh, Avo also fresh, but the sauce was missing some oomph. Next time I will try the Tuna Tar Tar instead. - Shrimp & Mango Summer Rolls : Holy cow these are good! Located on Waverly Place in the heart of Madison's historic downtown business district, Blue Wazabi offers a reliably consistent, if uninspiring, option for fresh and tasty sushi and other Japanese cuisine in a very casual atmosphere. Blue Wazabi came highly recommended by a friend of mine, who declared it his local 'go to' for sushi, and I was excited by some of the innovative combinations in the signature rolls on the menu. Unfortunately, after a recent dinner with my dining companion, we walked away with an opinion of 'good, but not great' about it compared to other Japanese restaurants a short drive down the road in Morristown. Occupying a space in a historic former bank building, I felt like they could have done a lot more with the decor than a handful of Maneki-neko Lucky Cat figurines throughout the restaurant by incorporating the history of the space -- but I'd definitely overlook that if the food was something special. I opted for one of the signature rolls ($15-20) and one of the traditional rolls ($6-9); my dining companion ordered her favorite sashimi platter ($27). It's saying something about the experience that I have no recollection about what I ordered for dinner (even after looking at the menu online) and it's only been a a few weeks since we were there. My meal definitely wasn't bad -- the service was acceptable, the sushi was tasty, and no one got sick - but it wasn't memorable enough of an experience to make a distinct impression on me. We'd go back to Blue Wazabi if we were in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip just for it. Pro Tip: Blue Wazabi doesn't have a private parking lot, but plenty of parking is available in the 'hidden' parking lot across Waverly Place that's accessible from the entrance on Green Village Road next to the Chatham Bookseller. read more

Wifey and I were in Madison this week and I was in a sushi mood. As usual we checked Yelp and Blue Wazabi was the easy choice. We actually drove past the place before realizing where it was, but we found a parking spot right in front of the place. First thing we noticed was the place is pretty small, but it was pretty full for a Monday evening. Unfortunately, after being seated we noticed there was only one waiter working (plus a guy working the phone/takeout and a woman bussing tables). Luckily, in the end it worked out great because we weren't rushed and the food came out nicely spaced so we didn't have plates piled up. So, the food... We started with an order of edamame and we each got the Pork dumpling soup. Nicely salted and warm edamame, but the soup was the home run of the appetizers. REALLY flavorful and seasoned perfectly with three delicious and light pork dumplings. If I come back here I'd like to try their noodle soup of it has his same broth. For our entrees we ordered three specialty rolls and I ordered an eel cucumber hand roll. Wifey wanted to try the American Standard Roll-Shrimp tempura inside, topped with spicy tuna layered with sliced yellow tail, tuna and salmon sashimi. Our compromise roll was the Deep Blue Sea Roll-Spicy blue crab, avocado topped with sliced tuna and white tuna, wasabi mayo. And since Wifey doesn't like eel, my roll was the Carpe Diem Roll-King crab, shrimp tempura, mango, topped with eel, avocado and red tobiko, eel sauce. The three specialty rolls were all excellent. Really fresh tasting fish and the rolls weren't skimpy (also not filled with 'filler' like extra rice or giant chunks of avocado). I didn't have a favorite as they were all different enough and great tasting that I couldn't choose one over he others. I almost always get an eel cucumber hand roll as it's one of my favorite items, but this one was a little different as the cucumber was pickled and gave this such a great flavor it's going to be a go-to item if I go back. We had a great evening here at Blue Wazabi. It was clean, it's BYOB, the staff was friendly, we weren't rushed, the food was great and the prices weren't bad either. It's worth the trip! read more

This place is everything that you want in a "Americanized" sushi restaurant. Small enough where you feel you are part of the action. Food is fresh and on point. Fish just melts in your mouth. I had a tuna roll, sushi and variety of sashimi. Tasted great. My son had a chicken teriyaki and my wife had a steak teriyaki. Both large portions, very flavorful, and cooked properly. The waitresses were both very attentive even though it was a busy night. The ambiance is nothing special but I would rather have amazing sushi than fancy furniture. I only wish they had a sake menu. It is BYOB but there are a couple of liquor stores within a short walking distance. This is the best sushi place that we have tried in this and the surrounding areas. Easy to find location. Modern, dim lit, romantic vibed restaurant. Their service was friendly, quick, and efficient. Everything was very clean. I got the beauty and the beast roll with miso soup. The miso soup was good! It wasn't overly salty and a good amount of tofu and seaweed in it. I always get like 2 pieces so it's never enough, but I'm glad they piled it in. The sushi roll had eel, eel sauce, salmon, avocado, crunchy flakes and some other ingredients. The roll is nicely made, sometimes I have issues with them falling apart and it's not because of my chopstick skills. The flavors were great, for some reason I felt like this roll should have been a bit colder and not as warm as it was served. The ingredients were fresh though. We decided to give this place a try on a regular Wednesday night. We found parking very easily right out front but it was a little more tricky to find the restaurant flag. Once we found the concealed restaurant we were pleasantly surprised to see a small crowd of people (a good sign) enjoying a sushi dinner out. The names of the rolls were very cute and we ended up sharing a Roe Roe Roe Your Boat roll before our ramen came out. I really enjoyed the roll, the fish tasted very fresh and it was prepared very promptly. Soon after we finished our ramen came out. While the portion size was very generous and they checked off all the toppings on the ramen list it was really just ok. I was disappointed to find that they only gave us each half an egg and some could argue that the egg in ramen is the best part - they were already selling themselves short by chopping that literally in half. Blue Wazabi had very friendly wait staff, the sushi chef came out to check on us and I always enjoy a BYOB place but next time I'll just be sticking with the sushi. read more

I have never been to this restaurant. This review is based purely off of delivery - which I get frequently. They always deliver in less than an hour, sushi is fresh, and edamame still hot.
