Asahi is a tiny gem. Located in Morris Ave - a short walk from the train station - Asahi is authentic Japanese. Exceptional sushi: fresh, all of your traditional delights as well as innovated ones. The restaurant has limited space but that has never interfered with enjoyment even in its busiest night. The lady who has always served me is remarkable. I feel like it is a cultural learning experience just talking to her. She is the epitome the ideal company representative to welcome and wait on customers. Her bows and smiles are so gracious you just want to go back to see her. Shame on me for not remembering her name. I highly recommend Asahi. Love it. read more

Tried Asahi tonight for the first time. The good news is their fish is amongst the best I've had in NJ, and I'm a sushi snob. The bad news is they lost points due to making us wait almost an hour for a small order -the staff is very nice but they appeared to be filling a ton of Grubhub orders before us and the place was half empty. It would've been nice if they gave us a free soup or something to apologize for the long wait but c'est lavie. Other issue - the main one- is their prices are astronomical for a hole in the wall joint in Morristown. As high as any of the Manhattan glam spots, i.e. Soho, Madison Ave, Columbus Circle, etc. Where else do you pay $13 for a salmon roll? 90% of places charge around $7-8 per, so you're looking at a very steep bill. Again, the fish is great but be prepared to spend hi end prices for a hole in the wall joint. read more

The food and service were excellent (the 3 times prior back in 2025), but our experience on 4/26/2026, Sunday evening was horrible. In a nutshell, they prioritized catering-size take-out orders over seated customers, and tried to pad the bill after we handed our credit card. We had a 6PM reservation for 2 and we were the only people in the restaurant. We had a 7PM business call scheduled, and being the only seated customers, assumed we were good on time. A table of 3 and table of 2 walked in after we were seated and placed our order. We merely ordered 2 rolls, each and 1 order of salmon sashimi. Our meal took more than 1.25 hours to be served, because the restaurant was pumping out To-Go orders. Not small To-Go orders, but large round catering trays of sushi and specialty rolls! Our meal was served in "dribs & drabs," not all at once as we usually experienced here. One order of sashimi, wait 10 minutes, then one roll, wait 15 mins, then one more roll... still waiting for two more rolls. The rolls were loose... not like we were used to. Something changed at Asahi. After waiting another 25 minutes, we told our waitress that we preferred our entire order served all at once. Her reply was "it's out of my control how it comes out," with a shoulder shrug. We asked for the manager, and complained that Asahi is making its seated customers wait over To-Go orders. The manager said sorry & tried to give us free dessert. We didn't eat it and we told her we were now late for a business call, because it took an hour and a half for 4 rolls and an order of salmon sashimi. To make matters worse, they overcharged us. Our bill was approximately $88. and when the waitress took we card and ran it, the waitress added a $20. speciality roll that we didn't order or have, increasing the bill to $113. The manager had to fix that, which delayed us further. The food and service were great 3 times prior back in 2025, but this experience was so bad, we will never be back. read more

Stopped in for really good sushi across the street from my office. A little disappointed they didn't sell alcohol, but I got over it. They've got a huge roll selection, and I settled on the Volcanic roll, Rising sun roll, and Kamikaze roll. All came out fast, they were quite filling and, also very delicious. Service was strong too. Something has changed. We have been coming for many years and have always been greeted by the kind, tall Asian woman who seemed to know everyone's name. During Covid she would include a handwritten note thanking you for your order and even including a small portion of ice cream for my daughter. Today we ordered our usual chirashi bowl. It was disappointing to say the least. It did not include a variety of fish ( see pic) but instead had "fillers" like pickled radish, seaweed salad, some slices of avocado and giant glob of ginger and string radish for $40. I realize that inflation has hit us all but even when I ordered a few mos ago, it did not look like this. My "old" Chirashi order would have Furikake sprinkled over the rice before adding the fish but today it did not. Sadly, this was always our go-to sushi spot but we will be looking elsewhere now. read more

My boyfriend and I went here on our second date two years ago and it was time to return. We were greeted by name by the wonderful owner and were immediately seated at our former table by the window which felt very nostalgic and special. The menu is extensive, varied and obviously carefully crafted. We chose several appetizers to share, a crab and avocado salad which was in incredible pairing; a tuna truffle tartare which, again was a wonderfully clever but subtle pairing; and tofu squares encased in a crispy coating which tasted clean and delicious. The graceful owner was attentive and helpful with our choices and checked in on us to ensure we were happy and had all that we needed. We felt valued and cared for. I really enjoyed the Monkey Monkey Roll. It arrived so perfectly presented and tasted out of this world! It's definitely worth a trip to Morristown to enjoy the whole experience of this hidden gem! This is a very cozy small restaurant right in the heart of Morristown. All the tables were filled when I arrived on a Friday night. Cleary, the sushi must be very good! However, I'm not a big fan of sushi so I went with the only good alternative - chicken teriyaki! I also ordered miso soup and was asked if I wanted white rice and said yes (that was a three dollar additional charge). The chicken teriyaki was very fresh and delicious. There was a minimal amount of fat and I enjoyed it mixed with the rice. My one negative was the price on the website did not match the price I was charged. Sushi is supposed to be a delicacy. It should be flavorful, highlighting the notes of the components - the salmon, the tuna, the avocado, and famously, the rice. As I chew, I look forward to everything melding together awesomely in the mouth. I didn't get any of that from my late Wednesday lunch at Asahi. My California roll and veggie gyoza were just bland. The California roll had barely noticeable avocado or imitation crab, while the veggie gyoza, although crispy, had bland and colorless insides. I'm not even sure what I ate. The spicy salmon roll came the closest to success - it's a deep fried roll, thankfully without cream cheese confusing everything like in a Philadelphia roll. But each roll was too big to eat in one bite, really testing my chopstick skills by having to hold the partially eaten roll together. I did like the special orange and honey tea, which actually was delicate. At $48 before tip for one person, this was relatively expensive for an experience I didn't really enjoy. read more

This place now takes the spot of "my favorite place in Morristown". Really does feel like a cute little spot in Japan. I love how tiny it is and how you kind of need to get lucky if you do a walk in - which is what happened to us. My husband and I walked in on a busy Saturday and we SOMEHOW got a window spot (if you've seen the inside, you know the 2 window spots are prime real estate). So that was already exciting. We tried the orange tea and had it with ice. It comes with a spoon so you can eat the orange in there - HIGHLY recommend. The gyoza soup was very flavorful and a good portion size. My husband got the rice bowl and loved it (needed to take some of it home, it is very filling). The sushi is, to me, the best in Motown. Tuna was bright red and the ingredients blended in perfect harmony. Only thing...this place is veryyy expensive...almost a bit shocking. I'm not sure if they need to do this because they're a small business and it's insanely difficult to stay open in Morristown unfortunately (feels like every day a place gets closed down). I was in the area for work, was looking for takeout and came across Asahi Sushi. It was highly rated, so I decided to take a chance and am so glad I did. The owners are the absolute loveliest people and it's apparent they take pride in their restaurant. Even though I was only there briefly, I felt so welcomed. The food was fresh and delicious. A nice little spot. Five of us came here on a busy Saturday eve. We called ahead and our table was waiting. The server was so nice and helpful. One of our party has a restricted diet and had questions and the server was really patient. We ordered a variety of sushi, apps, soup and tea. And the green tea ice cream ! The only thing not great was the edamame, it seemed chewy. The green tea ice cream was awesome. BYOB is a great option to keep the cost down. This isn't a high end fancy place. My favorite roll (the Spicy Mania I think) was one which was topped with generous chunks of red tuna, fresh lettuce, and spicy korean hot sauce. I've never seen a roll like this before. The spicy sauce reminded me of how sashimi is typically enjoyed in Korea. When complimenting the presentation of our dishes, we were told that the chef had a background in art. The authenticity and the quality are definitely here. They are one of the few places I have visited put wasabi in their nigiri and the fish is so fresh. Their rolls are all very different and unique and their menu offers something for everyone. We ordered the 2002, spicy mania, and flower rolls. I appreciate they didn't bring them all out at the same time but perfectly in succession. Each roll was tasty and unique but flower was probably my favorite. I called to place an order for Delux Sushi platter ($135) and the lady ( I guess she is the owner) told me if I need the catering platter ? She told me there is upcharge for the catering platter. I was bit confused because I thought she was asking me about the separate serving platter. She told me there is $5.00 charge for my sushi platter if I wanted on party platter. I guess if I do not want party platter, they probably put it in zip lock bag or something! I ordered numerous sushi platters from so many restaurants, and this is a first time someone will going to charge for the platter. Visited here for The first time on a Monday evening. Luckily I did call ahead of time about a few hours before hand to make a reservation. When I arrived all the tables had already been reserved and it did not seem like they were taking anyone without a reservation. Parking here is very challenging as it is only street parking however I got very lucky and found a spot right in front and during this holiday season Morristown is not charging any parking fees which made it even better. It appears at the owners and some of the shops are Japanese which makes it very authentic for me as I continually search for authentic Japanese food in the area. Service is very very courteous as it is done by the same lady who serves takes your order answers the phone and I believe is one of the owners. As a party of one I sat in the cutest little corner of the restaurant secluded and enjoyed my meal. I would consider coming back however I am still on the search for super good Japanese food in the area. read more

We visited while in the area and found both the food and service to be outstanding. The sushi was very fresh and there are some inventive rolls on the menu. They have several tea options, one of which is the Flower Tea, a beautifully fragrant mix of organic leaves of jasmine, rose, lavender, chamomile and marigold which my daughter and I found to be soothing and totally hit the spot on a chilly rainy night. I lucked out because apparantely on busy days you need a reservation here, but we only waited about 5 minutes to be seated. The place is small with maybe about 8-10 tables. Extensive sushi menu, with some specials in a board on the wall. I can't exactly remember what I ordered - but it was all delicious. The place is super small. It's a store front so tables are tight. Service was ok. Sushi was good. We ordered a few things that turned me off due to being over priced. A few of the rolls were pricey and were just ok. But 16.99 for an order of 2 Scallop Sushi really turned me off to the place. Maybe the price was in the menu and I missed it - but I've never seen it priced near that level. Most places it's 4.50 or maybe 5.00 per piece. (4.50 at Laku in Morristown) With 2 orders - it took our dinner bill for 2 people up to $140 before tip. If it was the only place in town, I'd go back. Avocado was so fresh, several slices perfectly placed On each roll. My tempura flakes with eel sauce, crabmeat, scallions, masago, was delicious. My first time having it. It's so fresh!! Tl;dr this place is a nice fusion sushi with high quality fish. The hostess is a sweetheart too!! But be aware that it's quite pricey. If you're not sure what to order, checkout the wall cuz their clock says it's sushi o'clock! We started with the 2 of 3 newer appetizers: Truffle Pepper Tuna and an Avocado Bomb. The Avocade Bomb was impressively good, had nice presentation, and was universally favored at our table over the Truffle Pepper Tuna even though that was good too - you can taste the hint of truffle enveloped in black pepper with good quality tuna with a cooked firm edge. Avocado Bomb is worth getting again but the tuna's a good one-time try. We were fortunate enough to get Salmon Toro in our Sashimi Special and it was absolutely phenomenal. All the fish quality was overall quite impressive and it's exactly what you expect. All the special rolls were great except the Asahi roll which got mixed reviews at our table - try it yourself and decide! X-mas roll was fun to Salt-bae the extra crunch onto your roll. The Spicy Mania comes with Korean gochujang sauce so it's a Korean-level type of spice. The roll is great too if you don't like gochujang which is only on the fish in the middle. The Santa Monica had a nice variety of fish throughout the roll, so that was pleasant! The Kamikaze is their most popular roll so like... get it. And My Very Heart is so cute with the presentation and the roll is good (though not as impressive as some of the others mentioned above). This will probably be my new go-to spot for my semi-annual sushi splurge (without going to the city)! This sushi would realistically only really lose to omakaze. read more

In time, we became like family and even when I deployed to far away lands I would return there. They would have tears in their eyes when they saw me. I have not been there since pre covid. Hidden gem of a sushi spot in Morristown! It's on Morris street in a humble spot next to Nom in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of way. What brings this place to a 5 star to me was the service and commitment to a good experience. The owner was very very attentive during our meal. You could tell a lot of work and passion went into the food from the way they acted and treated us. We were seated quickly and the place was very clean. The food itself was very very solid. It also came out very quick! I had the eel bento box, something you don't always see, and it was delicious. The sushi was pretty delicious as well. The owner also said they make their own soy sauce!
