We ordered pineapple fried rice, crab rangoon, a spicy tuna avocado roll, and a California roll while watching the Spurs win the Western Conference -- woo hoo. The spicy tuna roll never even made an appearance, the crab rangoon showed up without the red sauce, and the fried rice was basically mush with about five lonely shrimp. Also, raisins? In pineapple fried rice? That's a crime. It's supposed to have cashews. That said, the sexy mama roll was delicious. And if you're reheating it, skip the microwave and pan-sear it on the stove. Therefore, we decided to order hot food instead of sushi - thank goodness because the sushi chef started coughing several times and all over the food without covering his mouth or walking away - what a turn off. Our hot meals were good - chicken red curry & basil chicken. Sat outside and inside. We ordered red curry, salads, and sushi. Portions were just ok. Food was fresh. Nothing fancy. Wife ordered adamane, was good. Red Lantern was closed for a month due to Covid-19. The takeout order experience was fairly smooth but the food was not good. The spicy sushi roll wasn't exactly spicy, wasn't as presented in menu and tasted like a California roll drenched in Cole slaw. The spring rolls were not as crispy as usual. By far the best Asian food we have eaten since moving to the area. The indoor dining area was a little small but on a good day one can eat outside on a terrace with tables. My family and I went to Red Lantern on a Friday night. We did not have to wait to be seated. The hostess greeted us and soon after our waiter joined us. The waiter explained to us the different prices for portion sizes ( small or large). I ordered the small portion which is more like a lunch, but it was adequate for me. My daughter ordered the Perfect 10: a full box of sushi and sashimi which was on the pricey side but all tasted very good. My husband ordered the Basil Chicken and I ordered the small portion of the Mango Chicken. All entrees were delicious. We will definitely return read more

Listen up: Definitely come for the sushi. Definitely make sure you got some extra dough in the back account too. Fresh n' delicious sushi + excellent presentation = $$$ It's raw fish. Of course you want the freshest and finest ingredients to tickle those taste buds. The hefty prices for their specialty rolls are justified, I promise! Their combination rolls are some of the most unique I've seen. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed with our "Under the Sea" and "Long Valley" rolls. C'mon, seared pepper tuna on top of a roll... ingenious! (And freakin delicious) While I was least impressed with our hot entree, the golden sesame chicken (which was more breading than chicken) I can still say I was continuously impressed with their presentation. If you eat with your eyes first, you're going to love Red Lantern. The detail they put into their presentation can't be missed! The service - impeccable. I'll confess: my brain cells are dwindling and half the time I can't even remember what rolls I've ordered. Our server, my saving grace, gave us a complete overview of each dish and roll when it was delivered to our table. I'm talking COMPLETE overview. Like when the contestants on Top Chef present their dishes to the judge. Impeccable I tell ya. Ordered a bunch of sushi and meals from here for Christmas Eve (sue me for not wanting to cook with newborn at home!!) and it was PERFECT! The sushi tasted fresh and flavorful- and the meals were tasty and well. They even threw in a side of French fries because of how much we ordered! My fiancé and I were visiting family in Long Valley and had a free afternoon. So we decided to find a place for a quiet lunch. Her family told us about a new sushi bar that had just opened up right down the road, so we decided to give it a shot. Man were we impressed! We ordered the hot and sour soup to start, which is my lady's all-time favorite. She said it was some of the best she's had! Moved on to the Hamachi Crush (see my pics) something I've never really seen on a menu before. It was very delicate but still so much flavor! They have a lot of specialty sushi that is sold by the piece, but we decided to go a more traditional route, which was also easier on my wallet. We ordered the Philly roll and an eel avocado roll, 6 pieces, both very good! Then, our waitress Chrissy (who was awesome and very attentive) came back with some pieces of sushi compliments of the chef. One of the pieces was a white tuna with sweet Mizo sauce and kiwi (which Chrissy described as "dessert sushi"). Now, the place is small, quiet, quaint and clean. Which was perfect. They have a small wine list (which the owner, James, assured me was getting a little bigger next week) and a very good cold sake selection. This is my go to restaurant for sushi and that includes Nobu in NYC. If you read any reviews that rate this less than 4 stars, those people have no clue what good sushi is supposed to taste like and they should go back to super market and gas station sushi. We've been going here for months. I'd eat here once per week if I had the time. Everything I've eaten has been fresh and awesome. Here's a few of our favorites: Salt and pepper calamari - fresh and prepared just like a salt and pepper dish is supposed to taste like. It's beautifully presented - even the little little pan fried veggies are fun to eat. Hamachi Crunch - This is their take on the classic Nobu appetizer yellow tail and jalapeño. My daughter and I order this every time we are there. Other classics include their garlic amberjack and their tuna pepper saiad which is also their take on Nobu's classic tuna sashimi salad. All of their raw fish dishes and rolls are a delicious spin on your standard sushi. Their specialty rolls are out of this world - our favorites include the million dollar roll, volcano roll, and the long valley. On the sushi side - if they ever have any special fish they are fantastic.I almost always get their sea urchin with monk fish liver. I've tried sea urchin all over the country - usually it's an acquired taste. Not their sea urchin - it's like eating sweet butter. The Japanese red snapper with plum paste jell-o is delicious. I also love their fish roe with a raw quail egg. You can't go wrong with any raw fish dish. If you need to embrace your Thai side - the thai basil beef (or chicken, I just prefer beef with the thai basil) is authentic and delicious. Pretty much any of their Thai dishes are authentic and awesome. The place is small and a little tight but everyone there is having a good delicious time. You will too. Their chef takes the time to make every single dish come out with its own "personality". This was our 5th visit here and each time it has been better than the prior. Update on the below: just received a Facebook message from the owners of this restaurant(I sent them a message on feb 10 about what happened and now 6 weeks later I get a reply) and they told me to go fu*k myself cuz no one else will and that I'm a "nasty bit*h". Please don't spend your money in a place who's owners think it's ever okay to speak to another human being like that. UDE RUDE RUDE!!! They change prices on you and treat you like shit. I have given this place so many chances to redeem themselves. I called and placed an order at 6:40 PM tonight, I was told my order would be ready in 15 to 20 minutes. I arrived at 7pm and was told that my order would be ready in 10 minutes.My order was not ready until 7:22 PM. That is completely unacceptable. The woman behind the counter (not the girl behind the register a brunette American waitress) refused to look at me and told me that next time they would "consider" telling somebody in accurate timing- no apology at all- no "sorry we kept you waiting" . Kind of pathetic that they would make somebody wait so long when the restaurant isn't even full! When I called back and asked to speak to the manager I was told none was available and was hurried off the phone. This place is completely overpriced, overstaffed, and definitely not worth your time. If you want good sushi and good service where they actually respect you and respect the fact you're spending your hard earned money go to Fujiama in Hackettstown. My wife and I tried this place because I wanted to eat somewhere new. I'm really glad we did! Appetizers We had the Garlic Amberjack and the Salt & Pepper Calamari. Both were excellent especially the Garlic Amberjack. I was really blown away by how delicious this dish was. Main Course We each got our share of the special rolls which were all great, but what stuck out for me was the Scallop with Yuzu Truffle Sea Salt under the Contemporary Sushi. It was so good. I wish I had ordered more than one piece. The sushi was very fresh and you get your money's worth. I eat quite a lot and felt very satisfied and full! Dessert We shared a bowl of chocolate ice cream and a plate of Mango Sticky Rice. GET THIS DISH. We both had a great time and will definitely be back! read more

I've been here several times since they have opened. Its been very difficult to find a good Japanese restaurant in this area. The Red lantern has a very modern decor and I think that they have done a fantastic job in taking a small place and creating a great dining experience. From the hostess being very friendly and cordial to the very attentive staff. Who are constantly there to remove the empty plates so you can make room for the next. Their dumplings were tasty and the very modern Sashimi dishes are all very tasty. You still have to ask the Sushi Chef for non-advertised items. I can't give that away as you'll probably order my items( Hamachi K....) is one example. He'll even make special traditional dishes on order. Probably not on a Friday night though. The sake is excellent. You'll be hard pressed to find the variety they offer at any liquor store in our area. It will be my Sushi place now... I'll be at the sushi bar :-) read more

Definitely the best sushi place in the area. In terms of quality, I don't know of anywhere comparable that isn't at least an hour away. The service is also great, but I care much more about the quality of fish at a sushi restaurant and, let me tell you, this place is up to standard. I'm a salmon fanatic and they have King Salmon which has been fresh and flavorful every time I've been. I always order a mix of sushi and sashimi. I have also tried the yellow tail and tuna, both are excellent. Their 'contemporary sushi' is something to try as well. The yellowtail sashimi is my staple, but we know we can easily order other things on the menu with confidence, including the RL Fried Rice as well as the Ramen not to mention all sushi on the menu. 4/13/16 update: we were able to try the Garlic Amberjack appetizer AND got to test a mango amberjack one that's currently not on the menu. A bit expensive, above average japanese cuisine, and the best place around the area. I'm a quarter jap myself and I've been to countless japanese restaurants, even at japan where I lived 4 out of my 36 years of my existence. Forgive me but at first I was like, oh sh*t, my wife and I are the only minorities here, and I was worried that the ratings were bogus. Well, I was wrong and I apologize for judging, this place was good. It's definitley unique, got an american country meets far east vibe to it. The place was a bit small inside but there were more seats outside. The staff here was excellent, they were welcoming, accommodating, and very attentive. We were seated right away, though the problem was that the table and seats were unusually high where we sat. My wife was a little uncomfortable being 3 feet above everyone and in the middle we kind of felt like we were drawing too much attention from the crowd. We decided to move outside, it was cold but at least there were heat laterns that would keep us warm. I really do appreciate the service here, I can tell the servers were cold whenever they came out to check on us. Btw, my glass was never empty and I've downed at least 6 glasses. I want to rank this place better than half of the japanese restaurants I've been to, and the best non-buffet japanese restaurant within 10-15 mile radius. I would certainly recommend this place to people in the mood for japanese food. Miso Soup: 10/10 PROS - Tasted how miso soup should taste, comes in a larger bowl than what I ecpected. I like the bowl design, it stands out from other places I've been to. CONS - None Hawaiian Tartar: 10/10 PROS - Other than it's delicious, the presentaion of the dish was very appealing. The portion size was good for 1 person, although my wife and I shared it. CONS - None Sushi/Sashimi Duet: 9/10 PROS - Presentation was outstanding, almost mouth watering to eat. The wasabi that looked like a leaf was a nice touch. The taste was not a disappointment, very delicious. CONS - It's expensive, but what japanese dish isn't. The fish wasn't as chilled as I would like them to be, it made me think it was exposed to the fresh air for a bit. FYI* In japanese culture, the reason why sashimi are so expensive is not so much due to the fish are so expensive, is because the master chef goes to the fish market every morning to hand pick these fish fresh, it's part of their expertise to choose the right fish for their customers. So, the labor along with the preperation and serving customers all account for the cost of the meal. Now, do these chefs here go to the market every morning or are their fish delivered? Only the freshest ingredients are served, with the finest dedication to the culinary arts. The presentation for each dish was as lovely as it was delicious. The owner/head chef, Jimmy, takes his passion and turns it into a fine dining experience for each guest. In my most recent experience, we had the spicy edamame, RL Gua Bao (in braised pork and the soft shell crab version by recommendation), Garlic Amberjack, Tuna Wow, Hamachi Crush, RL Green Curry w/ chicken, Chicken pineapple fried rice, some pieces of contemporary sushi (B/E Tuna, New Zealand King Salmon, Sea Bass, and White Tuna), and a few other off-menu dishes recommended by Jimmy. EVERYTHING WAS PHENOMENAL. Although I must add that their seating is limited, I will also say it's worth the wait. Jimmy personally checked in multiple times to make sure we were enjoying our meal. The feel of this sleek and very welcoming restaurant says enough for this review. Starting with some perfectly made sushi, was a great first impression. Then onto the mango chicken with a cornucopia of very tasty vegetables and some sliced chicken. Not to mention the mango sauce was immaculately made. To finish I had the fried ice cream. Contrary to the name of the dessert it was very good with just the right amount of ice cream.
