dropped into aperture coffee bar on a sunday afternoon around 4:55 pm, right in the middle of car free day on main from 10th to 30th. the café was buzzing from the energy spilling in off the street, but inside it felt more like a cool hideout than a hectic spot. the space leans effortlessly into its aesthetic. wood floors, a row of seats by the window, and an old motorcycle set right against the radiator make it feel like part coffee bar, part gallery, part garage. details like the mounted deer head, stacks of beans on the shelves, and the clean black and white menu boards hanging overhead add to its eclectic, yet polished vibe. it's the kind of place where you immediately notice personality stitched into every corner. ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk, but it came out tasting a little watered down. the matcha didn't have much depth and left a small layer of powder residue at the bottom of the cup. not unpleasant, but not quite hitting the mark either. still, aperture has cool vibes in spades. it feels like a spot that thrives more on atmosphere and craft coffee than on delicate tea drinks. worth stopping in if you're on main, especially if you're chasing an aesthetic break from the bustle outside. read more

Had a hot almond ginger latte which I don't usually see at cafes. I loved it and would recommend it if you're a fan of ginger. Space was cozy for a rainy fall night. Seating availability was alright, had to ask to share with a couple strangers but wasn't an issue. Didn't check the back side as there was a jazz show going on. Pretty solid vintage hipster style coffee bar near Main and King Edward. I still remember when this place used to be The Grind. Glad to see another coffee shop took over. Parking is available on King Edward. The spots on Main are metered. The place still has that nice chip hipster feel, though it now has a motorcycle theme. The coziest part is the back area, where there's now a bar area as well as some couches, and a corner area selling Les Motards (some running club?) merch. Staff are friendly. No complaints. Coffee is pretty decent. Also no complaints. I'd be back at some point. read more

For some time now I wanted to stop by Aperture and try their coffee. Finally last Sunday I did. Found parking in front, which was awesome since main is so busy. But then, after paying for parking, I walked in and was disappointed. 11am on a Sunday and nothing to eat except for a few day old looking, wrapped in plastic (really not sure what they were). I could put aside my sadness about the snacks, but then I looked around the room and did not get a great vibe. Didn't feel they put much effort into making the guest experience memorable. Possibly a grab and go place? I hate to jump to conclusions, and I have eaten wrapped day old before, but LIFE is too short to spend one minute in a sub par coffee shop when Main Street has so many amazing ones to offer. So sorry, but had to pass on this one. Maybe its awesome and locals love it but I will never know. read more

Visited today during one of the hardest downpours so far this season. I was hesitant based on the reviews but digging further it looks like they were review bombed a few years ago over an unrelated online incident. My experience was in general good with Aperture. Their London Fog and Lattes were decent, and the service was polite, speedy and in general, welcoming. The interior decor is really quite trendy, themed around a motorcycle garage, the artwork and seating was comfortable and chic. Many students were there studying as there is a lot of room to socialize and make yourself at home. The grilled cheese I had was $8, add a single egg for $3. I don't know what I was expecting for $11 but it was certainly more than that. My friend's sandwich looked like a Fyre Fest meal; in short, stick with the baked goods. While looking for a quieter coffee place to spend a few hours studying (and striking out at other packed locations), my boyfriend and I wandered further and further along Main Street until we found this spot. I remember this location used to be a coffee shop by the name of The Grind. A quick glance in told us the place didn't seem very busy, and we decided to try it. For the few hours we were there, it was very quiet, with a steady stream of customers. On further reflection, it looks like a lot of people hunkering down to study chose to do so in the large room in the back, so the front area looked like a sparsely populated coffee shop (a plus for us). Overall, seems like a great place to study for an extended period of time: there are extension cords running from some of the outlets, free WIFI, and large communal tables. Coffee and food prices were reasonable, at most a little pricier. I think it's a good trade-off as nobody raised a fuss of anyone staying there for hours to study. I also appreciated the prices listed on the menus being GST inclusive. This place reminded me of your typical conscientious cafe. You can choose to eat in or take your order to go. The place is well equipped with mugs, spoons, plates, and glasses for water. It always makes me feel like I'm doing something great for the environment (ignoring the fact I did drive there). I chose to round out my coffee with a gluten free cookies. There were 7 choices, and I had a hard time deciding between Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and Shortbread. My biggest appreciation: each jar had a tag that clearly listed out the ingredients for each cookie. Love it! read more

One of my favourite coffee shops in the south mount pleasant/riley park area! Such a cool, refined aesthetic and their drinks are always on point. They have nice front of house area which is nice to meet a friend or do work and a bigger back area that is cozy. I would say that the back area with the lack of windows makes it less appealing in the summer but perfect for the rainy harsh winters! Wonderfully cozy coffee shop! Perfect for lounging, chatting, or getting some work done. They have table seating, couches, bench seating, and outlets for you to plug in. Decor is beautiful, and the entire venue is warm and welcoming. They got a cool biker theme going on around the space, and the items you can check out are pretty interesting and add some nice value to the experience. Staff are generally friendly, and the place is very well maintained and clean. Free Wifi for paying customers, and a single room washroom that's clean and well maintained. Make sure you check out the back area for additional seating. Would recommend their sandwiches. They also have a great selection of pastries and the classic drinks you can find at most coffee shops. Cozy atmosphere. A great place to study and catch up with friends! On the outside of the cafe, it doesn't look like there's much space until you walk to the back, where there's more tables. Another perk is that the shop closes fairly late, which is convenient for a 'hyggeligt' night-in with a warm drink and a book. read more

This is a really nice little location! I happened to be nearby waiting for a friend, so I grabbed a mocha and a cookie, and was not disappointed at all by either. The mocha struck a good balance between cacao and coffee, which is something a lot of places seem to get wrong, and the cookie was chewy and tasty without being too sweet. Simple pleasures, done well. The decor itself is really nice too, with a kind of hipster wooden feel that comes across as cozy and unique; and the staff were kind and prepared things quickly. Aperture Coffee Bar is a wonderful (secretly spacious) coffee shop! It was highly recommended by some friends and so I decided to check it out. I went there early in the morning (9am) for a good study session! I recommend coming here early if you're going to study because it does get quite full and busy (+ a bit loud) later on. Walking in, I can tell this place was cozy. It had a couple of tables and a few window seats. The counter was decked with baked goodies. I ordered a hot chocolate - it tasted great; it was hot and chocolate-y, smooth and rich. They also offer lunches (which I did not get, but looked delicious) Looking around some more..I realized that there was another room in the back! It was spacious with plenty of tables and seats. We took a weekend trip from Seattle up to Vancouver to celebrate the Lunar New Year on a whim. But of course, when you try to do something spontaneous, work always gets in the way. So we had to find a place with some WiFi, log on and punch some keys before we could cut loose. A few minutes on the Yelp App and a quick detour lead us to this chill spot. There were only a few tables inside but we were able to find one where we could both work without fumbling over each other. My Americano looked great, but lacked a little in depth. I noticed they used a lighter roast for their espresso which is different than the richer darker roasts I'm used to in Seattle. It wasn't bad, just different. My pastry, which may or may not have been made in house, was a perfectly flakey and buttery croissant and paired well with my Americano. After a couple of hours of work and a second americano, we left feeling relaxed having work out of the way and caffineated and ready to explore Vancouver's offerings. read more

Guy picks up, speaks almost incomprehensible English, and says they don't have an alcohol license. Came by after dinner on Sunday night, around 9pm for a couple of cocktails with a friend, but the bartender/barista, a tall dark-haired male, that evening was quite unpleasant. We ordered our drinks, then my friend went to go use the bathroom so I decided I'd wait for her by the order desk until we decide where we want to sit. As soon as she came back from the bathroom, she returned to the order desk and while we were discussing where we wanted to sit, the bartender comments something along the lines of "you guys go sit and I'll bring it to you because I can't have anyone standing around here" in a very rude and condescending tone, not to mention in front of other customers whom were already seated. I understand if your shop can't have customers hovering in that area, but I think he could have been told us this in a more polite manner. I would have given this review one star, but the additional star is only because the bartender, despite his attitude, can make a killer ginger lemon martini, plus the aesthetics of the cafe are very cute and cozy. It's a shame because I do think it is deserving of its 5 star reviews for other reasons, but based on this experience, I beg to differ. read more

If you find yourself deciding between this place and literally any other place, go to literally any other place. Short story: Terrible service, no respect for customers - and the quality is awful. Long story: It's Sunday evening, the place is not busy (except for a lot of students on laptops, not ordering anything). We were among the few paying customers. We felt like affogato - in its classic form, this is a small scoop of cold gelato/ice cream "drowned" in hot espresso. Aperture has something called an affogato flight on the menu - basically, three espresso glasses each with a different flavour of ice cream and a different type of hot coffee/tea. I thought it was worth trying, so we ordered a couple of flights. It literally took 27 minutes to get our flights (I know because I had just paid for 30 minutes of parking before ordering). We are talking about a total of six scoops of ice cream and six pours of coffee/tea. On a quiet night. I don't know about you folks, but I think that if a restaurant has an unusually long prep time for a specific item, they should put that fact on the menu and/or tell customers when they order that it's going to take longer than they expect. This is just common sense. If we had been given that courtesy at Aperture, we would have said thank you, walked out and gone on with our evening. But we waited, unfortunately. When the affogatos arrived, they were terrible. What we got was 90% ice cream with a small amount of mystery fluid at the bottom of each glass. The ice cream was almost completely frostbitten; mostly it was ice. The fluids were cold and just wrong (the "lemon" was just a bit of lemon syrup/sugar drizzle). Overall, this was a pretty serious fail. And the server/barista was indifferent. It's safe to say that zero f*cks were given. I sent the folks at Aperture an email about my experience. The decor is very nice, but that's honestly about it. I got the vegan brownie thing that looked really good but it didn't live up to my expectations. The top half was actually really smooth and melt-in-your-mouth, and the chocolate was rich, but the bottom half tasted overwhelmingly of coconut with a shredded coconut texture, and that quickly overpowered any chocolate and hazelnut notes that may have been there. My parents got a hot cappuccino (average) and a cold mocha (subpar). Perhaps the lemonade would be better? read more

I would give this place 0 out of 5 stars for terrible customer service. The barista made a wrong drink and blames the customer for not tasting the difference between cow's milk and soy milk. I left with stomach pains, a bad taste in my mouth and not even a refund from the worst service I've experienced on Main St. I will never be stepping into this place again.
