They either don't know what they're doing or they knowingly overcharge anyone who "looks" naïve or vulnerable. Read - seniors or women unaccompanied by their husbands or fathers. The reason is because no-one is as honest, humble or as kind as Jay is. You can drop off your car which is very convenient. Jay diagnosed mine and explained everything in plain English without being patronizing. He's very responsive to messages, gave an honest assessment and didn't try to overcharge or upsell me. It is not noticeable from the street and doesn't look like much but Jay does everything front and back by himself -- a feat in itself. What a great sense of humor he has! Several weeks ago I came in for an oil change and knew their was a problem with my exhaust system. I can see why the reviews have glowing recommendations for this place! The guy (I didn't get his name, but I suppose it's Jay according to other reviews) was truly genuine, pleasant, and funny. The back story that made me shop for a second opinion. Skip the below part because it's mostly about me ranting and too afraid to fully disclose the full details of what made me go here: --- So I went to get my oil changed at Meineke in Lawrenceville (yeah I name-dropped the specific location), and they made me wait 1 1/2 hours when I had an appointment. Then they later proceeded to recommend four services that totaled about ~$1300. One of their recommendations was to change the spark plugs which totaled $368. Um. Yeah. I'm a girl, but some of my family members are mechanics so you're swindling the wrong gal. Plus, I'm not one to say yes unless my car had apparent issues before coming to them (which there were none--noise, smoke, fire, etc.) or is not operating. I know you've been open for only two weeks, but geez for trying to milk me. Plus, I think my interior compartments were rummaged thru since I am particular about my things. Yeah. To top all things off. --- Anyway, I wanted a second opinion. And so to Apna Garage I went. He spent about 15 mins looking at my car, spending time visually looking at the undercarriage and under the hood. He was so honest and straightforward when I mentioned the 'problem' areas. He lifted my car up and showed me the parts he was looking at. He didn't make me feel inferior. You know. Being a girl and not knowing much about cars. I can change the freon and tires so that doesn't make me that girly. All in all. I was just semi-worried that my car actually had some unseen problem(s), but I left feeling really grateful for the honest opinion and laughter. He truly is a great guy! My car chose the perfect week for its windshield wiper motor to stop working, when it was raining and storming. If you read my previous post you know that there was a scammer that put in a fake number for this yelp page. Jay was able to resolve that. Jay is an awesome mechanic. I have a 2006 Honda Accord. He is honest, reliable and skilled. He didn't charge me any diagnostic fees after spending over two hours diagnosing the problem with my car's windshield wipers. He could've charged me more for the hassle of ordering parts for my car, identifying the bad fuse, and installing the new wiper motor, and even attaching my grill to the front of the car, but he charged a very fair amount. Jay is the best mechanic in the world. Of course he's an expert at what he does but he's a genius and brilliant mind. What makes him truly remarkable is he's just a good human. He truly cares about serving others so even if he owned a deli shop, Fortune 500 company, or a fitness gym, they would all succeed because he's honest, fair, and provides great service. I took my car here (at the last minute by the way) after an oil change place told me I had an oil leak. Every time I come to Jay he lifts the car and shows/explains everything in detail with a flashlight. I NEVER feel that icky 'am I being screwed over' feeling with Jay, EVER. Jay is the man! Second time going to him last weekend (first time I went for an oil change) when my brakes started squeaking suddenly. He took me in a very timely manner - considering he operates completely alone with tons of customers - and showed me everything. He's amazing at that; he always looks at the areas of concern right with me standing there, shows me the issues and educates me a bit on what to look out for. Ended up needing new rear brake pads & rotors needed to be resurfaced, extremely fair price (I've paid way more for way less), and he even fixed another issue for no charge..just a easy fix he said. Jay is the best! I've been coming here for the last few years for my oil changes. He's quick, hilarious, super-knowledgable and no-nonsense. He doesn't do reservations, but if you time things right, you can get in and out in under 15 minutes. The most I've waited was probably a little over 30 minutes, but it goes by fast. You definitely can tell a ton of his customers are regulars. I've also called him for car advice, and he's never steered (haha) me wrong. Most recently I asked him about how to best get a quote for body work since he doesn't do that service, and a few other things. Definitely recommend Jay for getting your auto needs! I love Jay- I've taken our old Mazda5 and Prius (while we had both of those cars) to his garage for oil changes for many years. He's always friendly, and is always upfront regarding pricing, especially when prices need to be raised (due to landlord costs). He'll answer just about any car question you have- and take a quick look at your brakes to give you a rough estimate as to whether you'd need to change the pads soon- without charging you extra.
