Their gyros are great. When dining in my husband and I order a gyro platter with an extra pita and it is plenty for both of us. When ordering take out - that's another story. They give you half the amount of meat, so we have to order two gyros. I am only rating it a 4 star because of consistency - other than that, we've always had great gyros! read more

A great place for some quick Greek food. Food tastes good and they give you huge portions! We had plenty of food to take home. The dishes can be a little on the greasy side though. I thought this would be more of a cozy restaurant style place since it had the word "cafe" in it, but it wasn't. The seating area was comfortable and we spent most of our time talking or watching the tv they had on. You order at the counter and pay at the counter. The place is self service so don't expect anyone to wait on you. I actually prefer places like that though. Parking in the area was somewhat easy. read more

I go to Apollo about once a week and absolutely love it! I get the chicken souvlaki plate and it is delicious every time. I have also tried some of their specialty Greek dishes like the moussaka and it is just as great. I purposely savored every bite so that it would last for more than one meal :). Apollo's ambiance is pretty casual, so do not expect fine dining. You order at the counter, they call your order when it is ready, and you pick it up on a tray. It is easy, affordable and amazing! Sent my son in to grab some food and the burger was medium well when he was clear to make it well done, well after the prefer was made and we weren't eating it the cook or manager said I cooked it longer than I should and then stated to my son that he should be more appreciative of what he gets. Oh hi Apollo. You have gyros I will eat when I am sober. You are cute and I like you. I haven't been here in a minute, and I no longer at the ripe old age of 26 eat gyros intoxicated. It's been years, although I won't go so far as to say that it will never ever happen again. Never say never, folks. Flavor explosion in your face. So so good. I always get the lamb. Informal ambiance yet their attention to detail in decor is apparent. Centralized Brady Street location. Fresh ingredients. Yogurt sauce hails straight from Deliciousville. Yumtown. I always get a gyro with a side of hummus. Don't judge me. We're all unique snowflakes, okay? Cucumber yogurt sauce + hummus on a gyro = saucy heaven. It's been tragically long since I wrote my original review of Apollo and felt it deserved a revisit. Ambiance: Bright cheerful interior. Large windows that let in the sunlight. Stone floors. In the summer a nice patio. Beverages: Pretty standard café choices, soft drinks, some bottled beers etc. Food: The shining star. For the record - I am writing this review in between licking my greasy fingers. Bear with me on this. Today I went for the Greek Burger and Greek fries. A difficult choice because I think they have the best gyro in the city. The burger is half lamb half beef. The patty is little too thin for the overwhelming bun. It comes with onions, lettuce, tomatoes and feta cheese. It is perfectly seasoned and has a nice char to it. I do love this burger, my only complaints are the aforementioned bun to burger ratio, and it's a little dry, it could use a sauce, perhaps Tzatziki sauce? Then there are the Greek Fries. Let me holla at you, Fries, Feta Cheese, Oregano and Lemon Juice. Did you see the picture? Do you think you could resist that? The fries are so scrumptiously messy I have to eat them with a fork. Finally today as I was standing and waiting for my food I discovered I was standing next to a gigantic pan of Baklava. I averted my eyes, I turned my back, I hummed a tune to myself and yet nothing could drown out the Siren Song of the Baklava. I went back up to the register and tacked one onto my order. Instead of "What would you do for a Klondike Bar" it should be "What would you do for a Baklava", same amount of syllables and a much better product. For the record, I would beg, barter, borrow, steal, rape, pillage and vote republican for Apollo's Baklava. The portions are generous, and the phyllo dough is baked to a nice golden brown crispy existence. None of that white, undercooked junk that passes at other joints. The filling is finely ground with a heavy dose of spice. Their Baklava's are superb. Staff: The owner is one of the nicest restaurant owners I've ever met. I can't think of a single time I've been in here that I wasn't greeted warmly and enthusiastically by him. He clearly cares about his customers and his kindness is genuine. Drunk Kelly liked Apollo. Somehow she spent almost $40... someone ended up with two meals. Somehow she ended up helping the staff pull down the umbrellas. Apollo is, I think, owned and run by two burly Greek men who seem like they're brothers and are simultaneously incredibly polite and gracious, and mean and surly. Example: "What comes with the veggie mousaka?" "RICE OR POTATO." "OK, I'll get that." "RICE OR POTATO." "Yeah, I heard, thanks." "NO: RICE, OR POTATO?" "Oh, potatos please." "THANK YOU VERY MUCH PLEASE ENJOY YOUR MEAL." Meaning, they say "thanks" and shit like that a lot, and they mean it, but they also don't smile and sound like grumpy trolls. It's fantastic! And their sister must have decorated the place after listening to Enya and drinking too much ouzo, because there are soft, feminine, abstract cloud-like objects floating from the pastel-blue ceiling. Yay for juxtaposition! Anyway, the aforementioned mousaka cost only $7. It came with a huge stack of Greek potatoes, a brick of feta cheese, olives, and two flatbreads. And all the yogurt sauce you can gulp down. I'm very critical of mousaka (for all you San Franciscoans: stay away from Herbivore's vegan mousaka -- WTF were they thinking?) but I entirely approved of this one. It was gooey with cheese and olive oil, and it weighed about 3.5 pounds. read more

Apollo Cafe how I love you so! I have tried just about every other Greek place in all of Milwaukee in search of the restaurant that would prove my theory that much like pizza and bagels, gyros and other greek deliciousness is a bajillion times better in New York. This is the 4th time I've ordered from this place and it has NEVER disappointed. Service: They offer friendlier service than literally every restaurant I've entered in this city, including Carnivore, Ballzac or any other fancy place. Food: Greek salad = typical greek made wonderful with homemade dressing. The small is enough for dinner. Dolmades = I only like veggie ones. I was impressed they even had them, they're wonderful Spanakopita = Personally I like a little more filo and a little less spinach. The flavor is fantastic though. Lamb Gyro = The meat is wonderful. Edible, fresh, juicy...just yum! Order it with an extra pita bread and you have enough for TWO! Environment: It's kind of like a super clean mini diner. I've never actually sat down to eat here, but I think this stuff is best enjoyed at home where I can dive face first into my amazing gyro and not be judged. read more

Apollo Cafe has very good gyros, and is comparable in price and quality to Gyro Palace on S 2nd, but scores extra points for having a little bit nicer atmosphere. You order gyros for here and they come on real plates, not styrofoam. The location is good, as they are on Brady and Arlington which is the heart of the Brady Street neighborhood. Also, if you miss the Green Line later in the evening, you usually have enough time to eat here while you wait for the next one. Finally, they have a nice outdoor seating area. read more

I went there Sunday after finishing and mailing something that had been stressful and weighing on me for a long while. I had a beer and Beef Souvlaki with salad on the side. Everything was fantastic, except the beef, which was a too tough. Other than that, the ingredients were very fresh, the feta to die for, and the veggies very tender. I would definitely go back again. Their side patio is close enough to Brady for good people watching, but set back enough between the two buildings to allow for a relaxing, laid back feel. You know you're in for authentic Greek food when all the people at the counter and on the grills have Greek accents and appear to be related. I have a serious addiction to Apollo Cafe's Chicken Souvlaki. Portions are generous, although sometimes the chicken can be dry which is negated by generous use of cucumber sauce. Great lunch location. I work just off Brady street, and while there is plenty of food to choose from, few places compare to Apollo when it comes to wanting a quick and healthy meal. Sure you have Subway, Jimmy John's, Cousins...BUT if you want a meal that will actually satisfy you and give you some energy, Apollo is where you gotta go. The service is great. The man and woman (husband and wife) that work behind the counter are super friendly and very accommodating and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get my food. I've only ever had the lamb and the chicken, both were delicious. The chicken has been a little dry a couple of times, but the seasoning is good enough to offset that. This is my favorite place for quick Greek food. Their gyros are better than other gyro places I've been to. Almost every time we go out on Brady we end up eating at Apollo Cafe at the end of the night and I always get the falafels - they are my favorite! The tzatziki sauce is fresh and tasty and compliments any menu item. I've had bites of their cheeseburgers too and they are very good. When in the mood for a good cheesy burger and fries i'd get it here. The guys behind the counter are always working very hard and are very nice - always great service. We came to Milwaukee for wedding planning and found yet another downtown gem. Niko was incredibly friendly, gracious for our business, and helped recommend some popular dishes. The avgolemono soup is DYNAMITE! If you like a squeezed lemon on top of your chicken and rice soup, this is ten times better... and yet, no dairy! I also had the regular gyro - no tzatziki sauce for me, which basically makes the dish, but the meat was really flavorful and of course, deliciously warm and soft pitas. My fiance had the lentil soup, which he liked, but the Moussaka was out of this world! Be sure to check out the pics. I swear there's a creamy cheese in those mashed potatoes - they were unbelievably smooth and melt in your mouth. Fast service, fair prices, and incredible. Yum yum YUM. read more

I'm a big fan of Apollo Cafe, and it is one of the reasons I miss living on the East Side of Milwaukee. I'm not quite sure what it is about the gyros served there, but they're just a touch tastier than most every other Greek Restaurant I typically go to. Additionally, when I have time, eating there, as opposed to taking the food to go, is pleasant. I like the big windows which face to the south that allow the sunlight to enter. It's a plus, especially in the wintertime, when all of us Wisconsites are sunlight deprived. But the food is really what counts and I have yet to have anything but an outstanding meal there.
