Who doesn't like Greek Food!? I can't get enough of the flaming cheese, that is a must have if you haven't had it before. I love the fries coming with feta cheese to put on them. I can't get enough of that as well. I usually go with a kabob of some sort and every now and then get a Gyro yet still have bad flashbacks of drunken college days eating gyros. The food is amazing. Hands down the best place to eat on Brady street. Not run by money hungry aging hipsters who fire their staff and close their businesses like petulant children, not flyby nighters looking to make a quick buck with cheap food sold at extortionist prices.. But run by real down to earth people dedicated to making their restaurant the best on the east side. Like chopstix, I've been eating there since they opened- and unlike them their quality has never faltered. Greek classics are solid. Combo plates never leave anything to be desired. Their mint lemonade is..well just have some and tell me that ain't the word for Christalmighty gimme more. I joked a little on my Google review about them not having fried eggplant but with their selection and top quality food who really cares? Was craving for a gyro sandwich and I work a couple of blocks away from Apollo's. I have a very short lunch time so I called ahead to ensure that My food would be ready to be picked up and come back to eat at my desk. I ordered by 12:08, told it would take 10 mins to be ready. I arrived to pick up my sandwich at 12:20, got back to my desk by 12:30. I couldn't wait to dig in and was extremely disappointed with what I got. This is my first time ordering fromApollo's and will be my last. The sandwich was jammed packed with meat which I could have made 2 more sandwiches with. Not complaining about the amount of meat I got but the quality of the meat. It was as if someone had taken all of the burnt hardened meat shavings and used it for my sandwich. The meat shavings had an obvious darker harder crust on one side while the other side had a very thin layer of moist tender meat. I was so disappointed and hungry that all I really ate was the pita bread, slice of tomato and onions. I picked through what I could of the crusty meat but ended up throwing it away. It's a complete disappointment and it wasn't like it was extremely busy when I arrived to pick up my order. There was only 1 patron having lunch and two workers behind the counter. With so few customers they really should have taken the time to check the quality of their meat before making my sandwich and while making my sandwich. So very disappointed...Stopped in for carry out and got a gyro platter with fries. The fries were stale and they tasted like they had been fried then re-fried to heat up. The cucumber sauce was watery and pretty tasteless. The pita bread was soggy. Overall, not a good meal. Was it all bad? Not really, which is why I gave them more than 1 star. We ordered and the food was ready in minutes (but a little wait time isn't bad if the food comes out freshly made). They also gave us plenty of cucumber sauce it's just a shame the sauce wasn't very good. I really wanted to like it because it's close to me, but unfortunately, it was just not a good food experience. The friend I went with shared my disappointment and he swore the food is usually better than what we had. Maybe we went on an off night, but I'm not sure I'll come back to figure that out. read more

Um, no. Just no. I'm from Chicagoland, so I've had good Greek food and great Greek food. The gyros at this place looked authentic, but I didn't try it so I can't speak to that. However, the Chicken Souvlaki was just a gigantic disappointment. I had read the reviews on here that mentioned the chicken was a little dry. No. This chicken must have been cooked the night before and stored in the desert. It was bone dry. But, worse than that, the chicken was completely flavorless. I could not detect any seasoning at all -- not even salt! The pita that my Chicken Souvlaki sandwich was served on had been grilled, but probably an hour or more before I ordered it. It had none of the crispy goodness you get from a well-seasoned oily grill. It looked ok, but again, had no taste. The Greek Fries were good, but not great. They need to be served in a different receptacle so they can all soak up the seasoning. This was my first (and certainly only) time visiting the Apollo Cafe. I hope some of the other menu items are better. The staff was very nice, and we didn't have much of a wait. Other than that, the overall impression I got was that the food had been cooked previously and was sitting around for awhile. Don't go here if you know the first thing about Greek food and how it should taste. Unless all you want is a gyros. Then, you might be ok. read more

I like this place. They have a Greek Platter which includes gryro, spankopita, mousaka and stuffed grape leaves. It is good, and it seems pretty healthy. I think the overall price was may $11? I would go back. You have to be careful with the Greek places, but this one is OK. My friend ordered the chicken kebob, and I have one question. Could someone please explain what the yellow, runny demi-glaze stuff is on your chicken? All Greek restaurants use it and it looks like like post-nasal drip with the consistency of egg drop soup. We ordered a bunch of food, and it was overall fairly disappointing. The moussaka was below average, and the stuffed pepper was down-right bad. The gyro meat was a little dry, but it may be hard to separate this from the relatively slow delivery. Each dish tended to be too salty and greasy. I was left with the taste in my mouth until the next morning. At the end of the day, the most memorable dish was the hummus. It had a good home-made texture, and excellent garlic flavor. Was in search of some Mediterranean/Greek food on the near east-side of Milwaukee aside from the obvious Oakland Gyros choice. I no longer eat gyros and was happy to see falafel on the menu at Apollo Cafe and decided to give it a try. The food was honestly just okay. Maybe I am a falafel snob but it really wasn't anything special- they lacked flavor, I prefer a more herb-y falafel. I also got the sides of olives, feta, and Greek fries. The Greek fries were definitely the star of the show here, they were topped with feta cheese, oregano/herbs, and I think lemon juice. Their feta was delicious! My friends got gyros and both seemed to think they were really delicious however I think they would still choose Oakland over Apollo. I will say Apollo gets extra points for having vegan/vegetarian options though! I wish they gave you the option to choose your protein (gyro, chicken, falafel, etc) and then you can choose a plate or sandwich. I had to order 4 pieces of the falafel because the only other option was a sandwich. I would have liked to try a plate with their rice pilaf and other vegetarian options. Apollo Cafe is situated on a cute street with far more things to see and do. The staff when we went seemed like they had a million places they would rather be and weren't too friendly. The food was very inexpensive and for $8 you can have a good size meal. My lamb was very good and nicely seasoned, however the sides were something more to be desired. Fries come with the gyros, and they seemed like just regular frozen fries you can buy at the grocery store. My dish came with rice, which also seemed like I could buy Uncle Bens at the store and make at home. The hummus was gritty and not terribly smooth, and was a bit too oily. I liked how they gave the table and entire bottle of the cucumber sauce to put on whatever you like. I was tempted to use too much of it to give flavor the rest of my bland dish. Overall, we didn't pay much, so I'm not too disappointed. But quality wise, I've had better Greek food. read more

If you're in and around Brady Street and Cempazuchi and Mima's are closed or too expensive and you're not digg'n a fancy pizza, the Apollo Cafe is good in a pinch. For something a two year will gobble up try a side of Rice Pilaf. It's got a super secret sauce that tantalizes the taste buds. Half of it will be all over the floor, the two year old and you but the other half will be exactly where it should. The gyro plate with fries was as expected and the fries were perfect. The gyro was ok and the tzatziki sauce lacked a certain something. I tried adding fries to the sandwich (Jersey style) but it didn't help much. Great Zeus Almighty! This place is great! I tried the half chicken with a side of potatoes. She tried the vegetarian plate including spanikopita, stuffed grape leaves, and a big salad. We both had a Lagunitas IPA. It wasn't especially cheap, but it was all really good. Nice people too. The only downside to Brady Street is the parking. But you can always ride the bus. read more

It's exactly what you'd expect with no notable let downs. Gyro meat is good, chicken souvlaki is also good and their Apollo burger is a tough to beat burger on Brady Street. Even with long lines they maneuver through orders swiftly. Also it seems to be a family owned business with lots of familiar faces. Very friendly and great service. Look at the picture of the Apollo burger and know that it is a mix of lamb and beef that make this patty. Even better is that it has a good char broil taste. This was an unusual burger when I looked at the menu and I knew even though everyone raves about the gyro this would be my first tast of the Apollo. This was a pretty good burger on its own but next time I will tweak it and ask for olive and extra fetta cheese. I love lamb burgers and have to make them at home because you just don't see them on a menu even though it's a mix of lamb and beef I will give it two thumbs up. Every thing was fresh and the patty seemed very lean because it was not greasy and over all not a greasy/mess at all. I will try the gyro after another Apollo burger. The place was clean and neat. The guy at the counter was friendly and focused on the customer. There is a metered parking lot in the back so don't let no street parking keep you away. The whole area seems very happening and buisy so this lot is pretty cool so you can enjoy the area. It's my first time in this area and there is most likely a lot of cool places here. read more

I can't even count the number of times I have passed this place and thought, "I should try that place". I just never have. I don't know why. Now I have a reason to go and try their food. As I was strolling past the restaurant I noticed they were selling Greek Pastries outside. I bought some Koulourakia and an order of Baklava. The Koulourakia are little twisted butter cookies that tasted great dunked in my coffee this morning! The Baklava looks great and will be my dessert tonight. The young woman and little old lady that sold me my stuff were friendly and obviously proud of their product. They did a great job of explaining the items to me and answering my questions. Overall, I would rather go to Dog Hous across the street for the same value and order different dogs or an Italian beef sandwich. The dude behind the counter looked like someone had crossed him years ago and he had never let go. Walk up to the counter and order your food. Pick up your food, and sit down. That being said, service was fast, and the food was tasty. I got the Gyro and the Greek Salad. The Greek salad had a great dressing, solid toppings, and crispy lettuce. The gyro was super good, and the squeeze bottle of tzatziki is the best idea I've ever seen. When you're done, leave your tray on the table and they'll buss the table. I lived on Brady Street for a while and frequented this place. After not going there in a while, I convinced my boyfriend to let us go to Apollo. We stood at the counter while the man spoke casually about non-work related things for a good minute or two. We ordered and I asked for extra sauce to go. When we got our take out I peeked in the bag to check and he had an attitude and said it was all in there, funny story is not only did I not have extra sauce, I HAD NO SAUCE!
