Wow, I'm shocked at the bad reviews. And look, I admit I always go through the drive-thru going from place A to B, so I can't comment on the inside. However the food is great. Great juicy burgers, nice fries/tots/rings and root beer floats/ shakes. This is the perfect place to head after a day on the water or hiking. It can take a little while to get the food, but it's always made to order. They are very accommodating of changes and friendly. This is classic drive-in food. Not pretentious and frankly I found it a good value for the money. Sure if you get sea food it's going to be more expensive, but sea food is always more expensive. read more

Not sure why there are so many low reviews, I found Jim's to be a great option for higher end fast food in Hood River. A great addition to the food scene. Maybe they were there right after Big Jim's opened when they were still getting their process down. Big Jim's is big and spacious inside, with views of Mt. Hood from the window. how many fast food restaurants can claim that? The service was great, even with all the questions I asked as it was only my second time at Jim's, the first being a visit to the original in The Dalles. My cheeseburger with grilled onions and jalapeño hit the spot! As did the onion rings. They are famous for their ice cream, but I didn't get any this visit as I was already struggling to finish my meal. They have a drive through for those who don't want to get out of the car or are ordering to go, plenty of parking and tables and booths for those wanting to eat there. I'm sincerely surprised that the ratings are so low. I had a pretty okay experience. Like, 3.75 stars. I went through the drive through in the early afternoon, and there was no wait. I ordered a mini Jim Dandy burger (bacon and cheddar cheese) and a marionberry sundae. My total came out to about $12. The burger was decent. I can see what others are saying about not much flavor, but the flavor wasn't bad, it was just plain. It was definitely fresh, though. In fact, this was some of the freshest hamburger meat I've seen in a while. The bacon, cheese, and bun were all decent quality. It's not going to be my new favorite burger joint, but it was alright. Honestly comparable to Wendy's, but less salty. The sundae, on the other hand, was phenomenal. While the burger seemed a little overpriced, the sundae actually seemed like a decent value. There was like, half a small carton of marionberries in there. They were real, fresh marionberries, although I couldn't tell whether they were from a local farm or grocery store. They tasted a little commercialized, like the berries you can buy at Walmart. Not sweet, but maybe it's just too early in the season. The shake seriously looked just like the ones in the advertisements. Whipped cream and chopped nuts were overflowing the lid (in a good way). Very Instagrammable. Service was friendly, and the wait was not long. It was easy to find parking since the parking lot is huge. I would want to come back again to try the huckleberry sundae for sure. read more

I was really digging Big Jim's for a while. As an ice cream place, they had Mike's Ice Cream downtown beat...until today. An ice cream industry standard is so serve spilt single scoops since time immortal. Mike's does spilt single scoops. And Big Jim's, up until a month or so ago, also offered a split single scoop. However, when I was here today with my daughter to get her a kids ice cream after her summer program at the pool, they stated the manager told them no more split scoops! Okay. Otherwise, the food is pretty good and the service is above average. Although, the prices are extremely high for what you're getting. It seems like you're paying more for inflated worker salaries than you are for food prices, would be my guess as to why the prices are so high. read more

Big Jim's is a nostalgic drive in that brings back memories of classic burgers and fries. The food is nostalgic as well; offering no nonsense offerings. I would recommend you stay on track with classic offerings like burgers and dogs and not get too creative here. The inside is very cozy and when they get busy, it is quite cluttered. If I could give zero stars I would. Came in today for a scallop basket. 18.95 which i wouldnt mind, except when I open up the box there's 18 tiny bay scallops and fries. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have been going to big Jim's since I was a child but this will be my last visit. I have been getting this basket for years an I swear the price keeps going up which I understand, but the portions keep getting smaller every year. It's sad and very disrespectful to your loyal customers. I recommend people save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Months ago I sent Big Jim's in Hood River a message telling them I wanted them to be successful and that many people were complaining about soggy burgers. We let the long lines from opening day a few weeks ago get more manageable and the staff to get used to the job... and came in today for lunch around 12:30pm. In terms of physical setting, etc: Parking is tight, with a few odd angled spots being especially tricky to exit. Inside it's a HUGE improvement over the former tenant (The Ranch), with bright wood, lots of windows for natural light, mementos from the past history of the site, etc. The flow feels awkward as you order to the left, then have to circle back around and through the line in order to get drinks. For the food .. we both had the 1/3# cheeseburger (no sauce), and fries. It came out to the table in about 8 minutes. Fries were hot, and rated an "OK" rating. The burgers were disappointing - neither of us thought the beef had much flavor at all. It wasn't clear what the standard toppings or extra toppings were ... we asked for "no sauce" and the burgers arrived with the beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a lot of mayo. You can add in pickles or onions, mustard and/or ketchup (also available on the tables), or omit any of those. But even if I'd added my favorite toppings... the star of a burger should be the burger. Personally I like a bit of char/grill, and a beefy flavor. This burger just doesn't live up to other burgers around here - Twin Peaks and El Cuate both come to mind. I'm not sure we'll be back ... we can get great shakes at Mike's, and better burgers elsewhere. None of the other menu items appeal much but they include a variety of chicken sandwiches, fish, misc fried baskets of stuff (chicken pieces, shrimp). Bummer service, actively bad food. Service: took 25 minutes for 2 burgers, fries, and a milkshake that were definitely not made to order on a quiet weekday evening. When I asked the person behind the counter if the burgers were made in house, the reply was "uh, I'm not sure really...". Food: -veggie burgers: sorry excuses for a soy patty served on a costco bun. Like your highschool cafeteria veggie burger but left to marinate in a foil packet with too much sweet relish until today. If you also foolishly wondered if they were made in house, the answer is no. I've never before had a burger so bad that I couldn't finish it. -curly fries: cisco foods special but at a 50 cents a fry upcharge. Absurd. -Huckleberry shake: overly sweet, not well mixed, and definitely not as advertised on the menu pictures (no whipped cream, not even a full glass). More of a generic "berry" flavor. Just wait for Burgerville. They do it better. Pros: building was very clean and new. I guess that made my wait more pleasant. I work in the area and had hear a lot of commotion over this opening. I loved BJ in The Dalles. The Hood River one is super good. The buns don't taste the same to me. If I remember correctly they used to be toasted back in the day. Last time the wait was long. All I can say is regret! I will never get back the $38 I spent on lunch for two!! My son had the burger which looked soggy and greasy, he ate half. I had the 'new' fish and chips. Not sure if there was cod in the two burnt nuggets they served me, but I do believe I recall seeing some white in there. She asked me what kind of fries I wanted. I saw curly fries on the menu and asked for those. She proceeds to upcharge me .50!!! It's fish and chips right?! If there was an upcharge, simply say, 'that will be .50 more, ok?' We ate there for the first time this week. I had my 1.5 year old granddaughter with us. Took her into the bathroom to wash her hands, and it was filthy. The sink was filthy. The floor was filthy. then we grabbed a high chair and I don't think it has ever been wiped down. Totally gross. The napkin dispensers on the tables are equally gross. So disappointed. In one word - AWFUL! I ordered a BLT that cost almost $10 and it came out with the bacon barely cooked. I asked them to remake it and cook the bacon. It came back with bacon cooked but the bread was tore up and the whole thing was a mess. They obviously just cooked the bacon more and threw it together on the soggy bread and wilted lettuce. This was my first time and it will be the last . . . I wish The Ranch was still in this location. I will never go back again . . Big Jim's is a Big Joke . . . and it ain't funny. read more

We waited almost 30 minutes in the drive-through line with only about five cars in front of us. I timed the car in front of us. It took them nine minutes to complete the transaction. Then when we got there, they had no idea what our order was and couldn't tell me whether the hamburger we ordered was already cooked and sitting around for 20 minutes or yet to be cooked. We left without taking the food. Hopefully it's growing pains from a new business. Looks like it should be a nice place. I have been eating at Big Jim's at least once a week since they opened in HR. They have had some growing pains with occasional slow service and not getting orders correct but that happens to all new restaurants. I have kept coming back and the speed of their service and accuracy of the orders has greatly improved! The workers have always been very friendly and helpful since opening. But above all else is the quality of Big Jim's food. Their burgers, fries and ice cream have been consistently the best you can find in HR. read more

Darn! My wife and I were so looking forward to trying this place out. Both of our burgers were cold and grease soaked. Our sweet potato fries were lukewarm and soggy our two dollar and 50 Cent portion of coleslaw could not have exceeded 2 ounces. Big Jim's is a big rip off. We will never go back and recommend that you save your time and money and stay away. Hood River deserves better by the way we have been eating at the one in The Dalles since 1987 and have never been disappointed read more
