We go to Applebee's often but I wanted to do a review to acknowledge the server at this location. Her name was Ajai and she was amazing. My son had a really bad day at school (bullies) so we went to his favorite place Applebee's. We usually go to Sanford Maine location. But we had things to do in Newington. Going to this place cuz my son is so in love with mozzarella sticks and the happy hour, we have always had good service here. Today though it was far beyond great service! We had a new waiter named David and he did an amazing job! He makes me want to go there more because there have been a few that have taken a bit of time to get to me and my son. David was on point! I had a very ample and delicious meal here, starting with hostess Kristin (sp?) seating me and continuing on with service from Adrianna. She was very patient with answering questions I had about the menu, and when she didn't know she went and found people who did. My Perfect Emerald Margarita was delicious, the shaker left on the table, providing an ample amount to drink. The double crunch bone-in wings with traditional buffalo sauce and blue cheese was both an ample serving and delicious, my only wish being that it would've been even crunchier. Stopped for late lunch but thought we would go light and ordered the classic combo appetizer and new waffle fries. We got pretzel sticks and extra wings which we had changed sauce on the wings in the combo. Pointed it out after a few minutes waiting on 3 of the staff playing on their phones. He took away the pretzels and tried to take away the buffalo wings but didn't have a good way to get to them so left them with us. Just after Labor Day everything closes an hour or two earlier. We spent over an hour and a half driving all the way from Maine, before we finally found this Applebees Grill open. We stopped in for lunch and sat at the bar. The bartender gave us silverware wrapped in a napkin. When we opened the silverware it was not clean so we asked for more but the same was true for the replacements. When we commented to the bartender he told told us "we don't polish the silverware ". Visited last night for dinner. Tent cards on the table showed half price apps, happy hour beer, Long Island ice tea, Bahama mamas 4th side shows 2 perfect margaritas. Asked the waitress if that only pertained to the two that were showing or any margaritas. She said any. Proceeded to order our drinks apps and dinner. Bill came and drinks were $11.00 and $11.50. Asked the waitress about happy hour and was told they were not part of it. She agreed with me that it should not show on the tent card with happy hour promotions. The staff is attentive and helpful. We were here on a Friday night around 7 and it was crowded but we got right in We are trying to eat healthy and there were a few good choices. Which has buffalo (or bbq) nuggets, Mozzarella Sticks, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, and Cheese Quesadilla Grande. Then we have whatever we feel like for meals. I normally go with one of the pick a few. So the 2 for $20.00 or the pick three. I got sliders, steak quesadilla towers, and some parmesan encrusted chicken fingers last time. It was fantastic. They have these dessert shooters now which are PERFECT for little ones. Even management consistently talks to the patrons. Their menu changes from time to time, which is good and bad. Only bad when your favorite dish is no longer available, but you find other favorites. Today, I had a meal that exceeded expectations. The BBQ Brisket Tacos are phenomenal! Loved that they also toasted the tortilla. The variety of tastes was intriguing. You get a little kick, but not enough to realize there was a kick and then sweetness followed by a flavorful contraption of perfection. I now have a new favorite dish. AND, it's just as delicious as a leftover heated up by the microwave at home. I also recommend the french onion soup. I had the cole slaw for the first time today and I was pleased at how it was made. Not too much mayo, perfectly spiced and not bland. It's very easy for a restaurant to mess up cole slaw. This place does it right! The burgers are always good! The Chicken Wonton appetizer is really good as well. Ironically, I have a very particular palate. That should tell you something about the items I named. Don't let the negative reviews by people who have 2 reviews keep you from dining here. My daughters and I ordered spinach artichoke dip, the chips were super stale, chewy and inedible. Once our meals came out, they were cold and bland. I love the reviewer that gave this restaurant five stars on the "Applebee's curve"! Unfortunately even grading on a curve I cannot be that generous based on my last visit which in all fairness was not representative of most of my visits there. We're all human, and I think on this particular day our server must of been preoccupied with a personal matter - and I understand that, I really do. For that reason I'm not going to blast her, we all have our good days and bad. The food is nothing if not consistent. The mozzarella sticks I think must float in some kind of time space continuum because they always look and taste the same and I mean exactly the same. My personal favorite is the spinach artichoke dip, there's just something about it that is pleasing to me. All right, I'll tell you what it is; it's the false sense that I'm eating some form of healthy vegetable. I am one of those people who can find something on about every menu except Ethiopian and Afghanistan so I am more than happy to part my butt at Applebee's. If there's a game on however I would go to either Mojo's Barbecue or The Shanty - I like their sports vibe and they have better viewing TV wise. read more
